Pier.

As I drive back to the private airstrip, tears spill without warning. The dull ache I’ve carried for days has erupted into something worse, something feral, suffocating.

I grab the wheel, pull over to the side of the road, and stumble out of the car. The night air is cold, but my chest still feels too tight. I slam the door so hard the echo ricochets in the dark, then fall to my knees on the gravel. My roar breaks loose, raw and guttural, before dissolving into broken sobs.

I loved her. And she married him.

The thought alone rips through me like a curse. It’s exactly what happened to Grandpa. He loved Alexa’s grandmother, but in the end, he never got her. The same damn history repeats itself, the same cruelty binding me to bloodline and fate. I drag myself to the car and lean back against the door, my wails hollow in the empty night.

When Hulio first invited me to the wedding, I thought it was a twisted joke. But then the digital invitation arr

Alexa. Night. “Helia, you needed to have heard what Erwin said…I couldn’t believe it. But he did. I was scared. I wish I had recorded it.” My hand trembles, water sloshing inside the glass. He steadies my hand without a word. My gaze lifts to his and suddenly my lungs remember how to breathe. His eyes say it all, ‘Calm down. I’m here.’ The storm in me eases, though my skin tingles with sensations I can’t ignore. My body wants to register them, my heart doesn’t. “Thank you…I needed that.” My smile is tentative. I pull my hand back before he melts me into butter. I can’t afford weak emotions. Not now. Not after Hulio. Silence stretches between us, filled by the hum of quiet conversations and clinking glasses around the restaurant. Helia brought me here after I called earlier. Dinner, he promised. He picked me up the moment he was done with his day. Now we sit dressed for the evening, me in a green maxi dress and cashmere coat, him in a black shirt with sleeves rolled at the elb

Ashley. Meanwhile… Tears blur my vision as I drive, my chest thundering with every beat of my heart. I can’t stop replaying everything that has happened since that night, since I was exposed before everyone. Fury had driven me thereafter. So much fury that I went straight to Hulio’s house to wait for him. ‘Hulio…let’s talk about this…I can prove that girl isn’t my sister…’ I had tried to defend myself, clinging to my story. But the empty look in his eyes, the slump of defeat in his gait it unsettled me. Still, I pressed on. And then he spoke words that rooted me where I stood. ‘But can you prove you didn’t say those words she accused you of?’ I stared at him, shocked. Silent. And when I had nothing, when my own silence betrayed me, his voice turned to steel. ‘Get your things and leave my house. I don’t ever want to see you again. If I do, I’ll do something you won’t be happy to discover.’ Shame found me then. Heavy. Merciless. I grabbed my things and left without another word.

Alexa.13th January, Tuesday. Next day…Morning.I march out of the elevator, body aching in places I didn’t know could ache. I’m late, had to stop at the doctor’s this morning.‘Baby is doing fine, Miss Hills. Still tiny, but everything seems normal.’ Doctor Kyle’s words circle in my head. I had nodded, barely hearing him.“Any discomforts when you eat certain foods?” he’d asked.“Yeah. Fries. I burp like crazy, but I can’t stop eating them,” I grumbled, wiping jelly off my belly. He chuckled, handing me tissues. “It’s expected. As long as you can keep food down, no worries.”He’s handsome. But I blinked past that. Handsomeness ruined my life once. Now I step into the office, hoping for a quiet day anything to erase the grief Hulio’s intrusion caused yesterday. I barely ate yesterday, because I was still stewing in anger. Grandma had to remind me that I needed to eat for the baby, before I could eat a bite. “Any calls for me?” I ask my secretary now as I approach my door. Carla sh

Alexa.12th January, Monday. Three days later…Morning.“So, ladies and gentlemen, if everyone cooperates, like we just suggested, everything will go smoothly, and we’ll be out of your hair in no time.” Mr. Price, head of the investigative team, projects his voice across the boardroom. The members of the board shift uncomfortably in their seats, fear etched in their faces, even though Mr Price's repeated for the umpteenth time that they should relax.Their alarm only mirrors half the panic I know Erwin and Ashley will feel once these investigations cut deep. They’re the only two missing from the board today.“Miss Hills, any further questions?” Mr. Price directs to me.I blink, snapping back to the present. “No, Mr. Price. That would be all. I only wanted the board to know I was working with them, not against them. They worried about how the investigations would go, and now they have your assurance it’ll be smooth.”I sweep my gaze across the table, waiting. Tentative nods ripple aro

Hulio. As those words fall from Prudence’s, no, Alexa’s mouth, my cane slips from my grip and hits the marble with a sharp clank. The sound cuts through the silence like a blade. And in the quiet, my mother’s warning from days ago rips through my skull,‘…A heart, which I’m sure would break when the truth comes out about Ashley…’My chest caves. My heart sinks like stone, as mum's words keep playing in my head. Did mum know something about Ashley that I didn't know? Had mum known something about this accusation currently levelled against Ashley? But I can't ask these questions, instead I lunge toward Ashley, spin her around, and hold her in my gaze. My voice quivers, betraying me.“Tell me what she said isn’t true, Ashley.”Her eyes falter, just a flicker, but it’s enough. It guts me. Horror strikes me like a slap, like a blade to the throat. I stumble back.“You… you set your sister up. You almost got her raped that day.”The words taste like acid. My body feels foreign. Ashley freez

Jon. Night. I haven’t left my cousin’s side in hours. Truth is, I was with her all through when the calls wouldn’t stop coming in. We ignored most of them, sitting cross-legged on the floor instead, talking. Catching up on lost years. Alexa is back. My Alexa is back. She never died. She never left me. ‘Why didn’t you tell me you were alive?’ I’d asked at one point, as we tore into the box of Barney’s chocolates I’d ordered to celebrate. Even while I savored the sweetness, bitterness lingered. The pain of mourning her all this while, when she had been breathing somewhere, hidden. ‘I wanted to,” she’d whispered. “So many times. But Helia and Grandma asked me to wait. Especially after that accident on Grandma, we got scared.’ I’d accepted that. The accident still haunts Dad; to this day he mutters about how the culprit hasn’t been caught. Now we’re here, gathered in the Hills mansion. Jace, Eve, their kids upstairs, Grandma, Helia, Mum, Dad, we’re all at dinner. Roast beef, baked
