Helia.

Later…

I fume silently, standing at the window, watching the waves crash against the jagged rocks below. The sky’s clear. The sea’s beautiful. But none of it matters. Because Ashley isn’t back.

10 am and still no sign of her. There's this dull ache in my heart I'm refusing to register.

My phone rings. I grab it from my pocket. Pier.

“What’s up?” I say, forcing energy into my voice. It lands flat.

“Where are you?” he snaps. “We need to talk.”

His tone’s clipped, impatient. Mine stays lazy. “Milan. Why?”

“We need to talk,” he repeats.

Ahh!

I pinch the bridge of my nose. “I’ve got a few minutes.” Honestly, I don’t. And I don’t care. Investment updates can wait.

“What happened between Hulio and Prudence Kateri?”

Alexa’s alias hits me like a sucker punch. My breath catches. What the hell is Pier doing with her name in his mouth? What does Hulio have to do with her?

“What does Hulio have to do with Prudence?” I ask, trying to stay calm while my insides churn.

“You tell me,” Pier reto

Alexa (Prudence)Corte, Corsica, FranceSaturday, 5th July. Four days later…Evening.I’m at Cherie’s Burger, sketching new designs for work. It’s been only four days since I started at Flirt, and I already have real assignments. I’ve been tasked with creating gowns for five celebrities, movie stars, attending a major film award next month. Just a month to design something grand. Something unforgettable.I’m one of the designers now. I have my own team.A smile curves on my lips as I remember the tension in the interview room. The way Marc Jean, Pier’s friend, looked at me. He led the recruitment panel. I still can’t place that expression on his face. Disgust? Maybe. Then he gave me a challenge: design a dress from scratch in three hours.I did. It was back breaking work. Tension exuding through out my entire body. And when I finished, the look on his face shifted. Shock. Then something like respect. He said he had no idea I could pull it off. Thought I was just a girl that seducer h

Pier.Tuesday, 1st July. Next day. Evening. It’s 6 p.m. I’m in my New York apartment, my office, specifically, reviewing projections Helia just sent over. The proposal for the affiliate program looks promising. I’m glad he sees the value in it too. Once the documents are drawn, I’ll be done here. Then I can return to Prudence.I miss her. Terribly.I picked up a few things for her. Chocolates from Barneys, a little taste of the city. Her file says she’s from San Francisco, but there’s little else on her past. Just “Martha” listed under employment. No family. Nothing personal. I need to know more. Maybe tonight, at dinner with the Ripples, I’ll bring her up. Maybe Helia knows something. Two hours later, we’re seated. Helia, Hulio, and me. Helia’s talking about the proposal, about how great it’ll be for Grevelstokes and Blackwood College. I should be listening, but my attention’s on Hulio. He’s glued to his phone, barely present. Every now and then, he catches me watching him. But says

Jace Hayward.Monday, 30th June. Next day. Morning. It’s 11:55 a.m. and a smile stretches across my face as I sit in my office, flipping through approvals for the new ship designs. Eveliina’s face flashes in my mind. The way she looked at me last night. The love in her eyes when we made love. I didn’t know she had fallen for me. Not truly. Somewhere in my heart, I still thought she was hooked on Chris. But now… now we’re a family. A real one. With love blooming between us. Nothing holding us back. The phone on my desk rings. I sigh, irritated at the interruption.“Jace Hayward speaking,” I answer quietly.“Hey, it’s Pier. I’m at Gulp it Down Café, near your office. Come on over, let’s have lunch.”My brows lift in surprise.“Oh? When did you get in?” I ask, already gathering the files and clearing my desk.“Just wrapped a four-hour meeting with your father-in-law, your brother-in-law, and most of the board. I’ll fill you in. I’m famished, and we’ve got a lot to discuss.” He yawns thr

Eveliina Hayward.Sunday. 29th June. Next day.I’m having breakfast with my husband. The quiet between us is broken only by the sweet chatter of our two-year-old daughter, Irene. She babbles about everything. Her toy horse, her cereal, the color of her spoon. And I listen, I smile, but I’m not really here. I'm in the hospital. Grandma. She looks so much like my grandmother. And like her father. Her real father. My throat tightens. The resemblance brings both comfort and ache. Comfort, because she looks like grandma. Ache, because Grandma still lies unconscious in a hospital bed and because Irene is growing more like her real dad. The face. I banish the memory. We’re heading to the hospital after breakfast. I need to eat, focus on that. But right now, the food sits untouched on my plate.“Why aren’t you eating?” Jace asks gently.I look up at him. A small, strained smile forms on my lips. He studies me, his tone even softer when he says, “You know you need to eat… for the baby.” No

Ashley.Evening.I’m lying in Hulio’s bed, his strong arms draped protectively around my bare waist. His warmth wraps around me like a shield. For a moment, I let myself believe this is peace. Yet, I know I can't have peace with him, because he can't give me what I need. Then my phone vibrates on the nightstand again. This time, I turn to it.I shift carefully, trying not to wake him. When I check the screen, my stomach sinks.I slide out from under his arm, grabbing his shirt and slipping it on as I pad downstairs. In the kitchen, I answer the call on the fourth ring.“Hi.”“What the fuck is wrong with you? You had one of my boys kill your grandmother?”The voice on the other end chills my spine. My body trembles. “No…NO. She isn’t dead. She survived…”“You better pray she does. If she dies before naming her successor, everything goes to waste.” His tone is hard. I feel it settle over me like ice. Dripping with menace. He’s right. Grandma hasn’t made her final declarations yet. I let

Jon Grevekstoke.Saturday, 28th June. Next day.Morning. 7 a.m.The hallway is already humming, nurses changing shifts, doors opening, monitors beeping. Life continues, as always. But for us, for Elviira Hills' familythe world has stopped. It’s dimmed, muffled, suspended.Mia Curry, my girlfriend, sits beside me. Her fingers are laced through mine, squeezing gently. Trying to ground me. But I’m hollow.“She’ll be fine, babe. I promise.” Mia’s voice is soft as she leans in and kisses my hair. We’ve been at the hospital since midnight. We left the club immediately after Dad’s call. One minute, I was laughing and dancing with Mia. The next, I was cold.‘What?’ I’d asked, already stepping outside to hear him better.‘Your grandmother… someone rammed into her…’‘Where’s Mum? Is she alright?’‘She’s fine. Just meet us at Central Hospital.’The call ended. I pulled Mia with me. My car ate the road as I tore through traffic, desperate to get here.‘Slow down, babe.’ Mia had tried calming me. B
