The online wildfire has finally begun to die down.
After the PR job I did with the hospital team, the criticism from people has gradually been suppressed.
Still, I am determined to prove my innocence and exonerate my name from the nasty scandal.
I owe myself that much.
I've worked my ass off to get to this point in my career, and I won't let anyone ruin my efforts.
I have just gotten back from my morning shift when my phone rings. It is from one of the receptionists at the hospital’s front desk.
“Doctor W-Whi-White,” she stammers, “Can you come to the hospital? The patient’s family is here, and they are making a scene demanding that the Alpha give them an explanation as to why their son was humiliated by the hospital staff, and nothing has been done about it.”
Goddess!
At this point, I don't even blame the patient’s family. I expected Alpha Dominic to hold a meeting with the patient's family and at least assure them that he is looking into the matter.
As the Alpha of this Pack, it is his duty. The hospital is under his rule, and just simple kind words from him would have been enough to calm the storm.
“I’ll reach out to the Alpha. Also, I’m on my way,” I say to the caller.
After hanging up, I dial Dominic. He answers on the fourth ring.
“Jess?”
“Alpha Dominic, there’s a situation at the hospital,” I tell him. “The patient from the media scandal, his family, is demanding an explanation from you. I just got home, but I'll be heading back to the hospital now. Please, come handle it with me. The patient’s family will be grateful to see you, and just a few words from you will be enough to calm them down.”
He is quiet for a second, so I ask him, “Are you far away?”
“No, I'm at the guesthouse in Bluview.”
Great, that means he can get to the hospital in less than five minutes. He should have been there even before me.
“So, you coming?” I ask him.
Another silence, then I hear a voice in the background that unmistakably belongs to Rosie just before he says, “Alright. I’ll be there.”
A shove of angry voices greets me once I arrive at the little office where the patient's relatives have been left to wait for the Alpha.
“That's the Omega trash.” I overhear one of the people in the room murmur as I walk into the room.
Acting like I hear nothing, I greet them all, and I take a seat opposite them, proceeding to explain to them that the hospital management is already looking into the case, and very soon, the culprit will be discovered.
“I assure you all, we are on top of this and in a little while, the culprit will be apprehended,” I tell them.
“So, you’re an Omega?” A woman who introduced herself as the patient's mother asks with a sneer, and I nod in reply.
“No wonder this hospital is falling apart.” She snaps. “Who lets an Omega work in medicine? Listen to me, an Omega has no right to be a doctor. This whole scandal is a result of letting wretched things as you work in a field that they don’t deserve.”
Careful not to draw attention to my cellphone, I type out a message to Dominic: “Where are you?” before turning my full attention back to the people in the same room with me.
The patient’s mother looks me up and down like I am some insect that needs to be squashed.
Her words are a slap to my face. Still, I bow slightly in respect.
“Ma’am, let’s calm down. I can assure you-”
“You can't assure me anything!” The patient’s mother yells at me. “You don’t even deserve to sit in the same room with us. I’m curious to know who let you touch my child? In fact, all of this will soon come to an end. At least you'll be replaced by the Beta heir pretty soon. I don’t know who sold you the illusion that you deserve to work in the Pack’s hospital, but I’m telling you for free that Miss Rosie is the only one qualified to be our healer. Not some riff-raff like you.”
I am shocked that she already knows about Rosie being my replacement, even though I haven't shared the news with anyone yet.
So, I ask immediately, “How did you know Rosie Aster would be taking my position?”
Her eyes show her shock as she realizes she has exposed herself.
“Someone must have said it somewhere.” Another relative rushes in.
“Yes,” the patient’s mother agrees. “I overheard someone say it.”
“Who?” I persist, but she shrugs her shoulders.
“I can't remember.”
She doesn't want to answer.
I look around the room. Dominic isn't still here yet. Why isn't he here? He said he is at Bluview, and the distance from the guesthouse to the hospital is barely five minutes.
I tap on my phone, but he hasn't replied to the message I sent to him.
I tap on his name and put a call through to him.
It rings with no answer.
Another call, still no answer.
A third, still the same.
My stomach tightens with dread. I am here all alone with agitated patients’ relatives, and the hospital’s admin isn't even here.
“Does the Alpha not find us worthy of his presence that he sent a lowly Omega to speak to us?” Another relative suddenly asks.
My goddess, why is Dominic not here? I told him how much his presence would help in calming the situation. Yet he doesn't bother to show up?
I clear my throat, “Uhm, the Alpha is-”
“I wasn’t speaking to you, filthy swine!” The relative snaps at me.
A man from amongst them jumps out of his seat, looking agitated. Out of reflex, I quickly stand and assume a protective stance.
I take a quick glance around the room, and everyone seems to be staring at me like they want me dead, there and then.
I need to get out of here, at least until the admin member or the Alpha comes. If I stay here much longer, these people might form a mob against me.
My palms begin to sweat as I manage to utter, “Please, let’s sit down and talk this-”
“No!” the man shouts. “My brother was humiliated! And you,” he jabs a finger at me, “…are trying to cover it up!”
Before I can respond, he grabs a forceps from a sterilized instrument tray placed on a nearby cart.
Fear instantly grips me as I scan the room frantically for an escape route.
The rest of the relatives stand up from their seats, and some of them intentionally block the entrance door.
“Please put that down!” I scream at the man.
But he rushes at me, and the forceps come down faster than I can react, slashing through my wrist, injuring me. Hot pain slashes across my arm.
I cry out and stumble backward, clutching the wound as blood trickles down my sleeve.
Nobody in the room makes a move to help me. A woman among them raises her phone up and starts to record me.
“Perfect,” the woman with the phone says with vicious delight, “You look as pathetic as I wanted.”
The patient’s mother steps forward and lifts her hand to slap me.
Already outnumbered and afraid, I shut my eyes, helplessly bracing myself for the blow.
But it never comes. Instead, the room suddenly goes silent.
My eyes snap open.
A tall figure is standing between the woman and me, gripping her wrist mid-air, stopping her strike effortlessly.
His presence devours the room, his aura so dominant that everyone instinctively bows their heads.
“Allister?” I whisper.
I am shocked to see him in Westwood Pack; most of all, I am shocked to see him here, at my place of work.
It seems like the patient's mother is also shocked by the scene as she stays momentarily frozen and forgets to continue her actions.
His gaze is on me, so soft and concerned. But then it turns lethal when he turns to the woman who was about to slap me earlier.
She drops to her knees, shaking in fear.
From the crowd, someone gasps:
“Th-the Lycan King?!”
A trembling voice echoes from the crowd: “Why is the Lycan king here… in our Pack?”
“Does the Lycan King know her?” Another asks.
“No way, she's just a low-ranked Omega.”
Allister draws me close to him, making me lean on his chest as he calls a man I discover to be his assistant, “Leo.”
A tall man in a black suit steps forward, bowing his head in respect.
Allister’s voice drops into command, “Ensure that no information from this scene leaves this room.”
“Yes, President Blackwaters.” The assistant replies and gets to work as he surfs through people's cellphones, starting from the woman who was making a video of me.
I casually move my arm, triggering my pain receptors as pain shoots through me, causing me to groan.
Allister hears it and instantly turns his attention fully on me.
“Jess.” His voice softens, and concern spreads across his face. He mutters and holds my frame gently. “I’m getting you out of here.”
I let him lift me in his arms and for the first time in a very long while… I feel safe.
As Allister carries me toward the VIP ward, a hurried figure appears around the corner.
It is Dominic.
He freezes the moment he sees us, and sees my head resting against another man's chest.
~Dominic~After a very stressful day, I sit across the sofa in my sitting room, thinking of the possible ways to sort out the health crises that are gradually threatening to engulf me.I’m halfway through a glass of whiskey when my assistant’s message flashes across my phone screen. We located her last flight record. She booked a one-way ticket to Silver Valley.I pour the remaining whiskey into my mouth and stare frustratingly at the text message. Silver Valley is the Lycan King’s Pack…My mind goes to a time when Jess mentioned that she once lived at the Lycan King’s Pack.I’d forgotten that.“Send me her previous home address,” I send a reply. There’s a pause. “Yes sir,” Gideon replies and hangs up.A few seconds later, my phone notification pings. He has shared a location pin with me. It’s an old neighborhood on the outskirts of Silver Valley Pack territory. I tap on the attached images of the house. It’s a small, single apartment located in a narrow yard. The area seem
~Jess~The whole encounter with Allister’s grandmother made me feel uneasy. But Allister was beside me throughout, silently shielding me from the older woman’s venom.Rhea, on the other hand, had initially acted nicely, but it didn’t take too long to know that her actions were just camouflage. So, when she offered me an invitation to the royal family’s charity gala that would be held later that evening, I hesitated. Not because I just arrived and didn’t plan on attending any event while still under Allister‘s protection, but because the few minutes I already spent with her told me the kind of person she might be.So the invitation came wrapped in too much warmth that I suspected there was more to it.“You should come,” Rhea says with a smile that doesn’t quite reach her eyes. “What better way to introduce you to the members of this Pack than having you appear at a gathering hosted by our family?”Well, she does have a point. Still, I’m skeptical and wary about her open arms.“
~Rhea~The familiar hum of Allister’s car and the excited screams that follows has me rushing out of the Pack mansion to see him. Thus time, he was away longer than necessary. And that probsbly triggered the excitement from the Pack servants outside.Rushing down the stairs, I take a brief pause, waiting for a few extra sevonds to collect myself before walking majestically into the big entrance living room hall to wait for him. When the mighty entrance doors open up and Allister steps in, a big smile spreads across my face and I waltz across the room to hug him but my step freezes the instant she pops up from behind him.Jess, the ugly annoying ant I want to crush so bad.Standing beside Allister, she looks smaller than I imagined, But there’s something about the way she carries herself, like she already belongs. And that irritates my spirit more than anything.Forcing my legs to continue moving in the initially planned direction, I stop just a few steps away from them and force a pra
~Jess~ Over the last couple of days, I completed my resignation process at the Park hospital and got handed my approval letter. Today, I stepped back into the hospital to grab the last of my stuff from my tiny office. Every remaining responsibility I owe to the Pack hospital has been fulfilled; patient handovers, case notes, and ethical reports… Even a few unfinished health-related research summaries I once thought I’d return to someday, I had to conclude and gather everything, leaving nothing behind that can be questioned, twisted, or used against Me. Stepping out of the hospital building, I head towards the parking lot, carrying a small box that contains a few of my personal belongings: my badge and other little possessions I left in my office the last time I visited. Allister is waiting by the car, wearing a white T-shirt and jeans, paired with a sunshade. He looks perfect. The moment he sees me, he flashes a warm smile. “Done?” he asks, taking the box from me. “Y
I turn back to Nox, who is eyeing me like he understands my dilemma, and he shrugs.A suffocating feeling starts to crowd me.I have been thinking of calling Jess and convincing her to see me so that we can discuss my health and that of my mother. But getting blocked everywhere by her is going to make that completely impossible. At the thought of my health, my stomach twists violently, pain flaring sharp enough to make me bend slightly at the waist.I press a hand to my abdomen, breathing through the pain.I have to find a way to get to Jess. I seriously need her. I have to either have her be my side piece and continue like nothing is different, or get her to give the housekeeper a rundown of my meds, meal plan, and recipes.Same as my mother's health. And it's either she accepts the options willingly, or I force them on her. With my current stomach flares, I’m in too much pain to give a fuck about how she would feel about my decision.Everyone is staring at me, silently hoping for an
~Dominic~I’m halfway through a drink when Nox leans in, lowering his voice like he’s about to share a secret he doesn’t want the others to hear.“Alpha,” he whispers, “I think your little Omega is cheating on you with some high-end dude.”He means Jess is cheating on me?She's seeing someone else in this pack? That’s not even possible?“What do you mean?” I ask.Our Mate bond is indeed broken, and Jess has moved out of the Manor, but I haven’t told her that it's over between us. I never said our relationship has ended.I never did.So, if she's truly seeing another man, then she's indeed cheating on me.“I ran into her earlier today,” Nox tells me.I grab my glass of bourbon and empty its contents in a gulp. Twisting the empty glass between my fingers, I tell him, “Spill.”Nox studies my face, then grins in that upsetting way he usually does. “She was with another man, a fancy-looking man. And if my eyes served me well, he was wearing a very expensive Rolex. Top grade stuff. Not kids
