LOGINEmily shot back, her smile widening into
something truly ugly. She stepped closer, bending down so her face was only inches from mine. "Do you know why? Because you are boring, Lyra. You spent two years baking him bread, washing his shirts, and waiting like a helpless puppy at home. I gave him ambition. I gave him power. I showed him what a true Luna looks like."
"You lied to him," I whispered, tears of anger burning my eyes. "You manipulated him."
"And he believed every word," Emily sneered, straightening up and brushing a speck of dust off her red dress. "Because he wanted to believe it. He was looking for an excuse to dump you anyway. You were just too blind to see it."
I closed my eyes, trying desperately to follow the doctor's orders. Don't get stressed. Think of the baby. Protect the baby.
"Just leave," I said, my voice shaking with rage. "Get out of my room."
"Oh, I'll leave," Emily said smoothly. "I have a big party to plan, after all. Xavier and I are hosting our official engagement feast tonight at the main house. Everyone is coming."
She paused near the door, turning back to look at me with a fake expression of pity that made me want to scream.
"Oh, by the way... Xavier knows you collapsed at the gathering," Emily added, her voice dropping into a cruel whisper. "The guards told him you were bleeding."
My heart skipped a beat. I looked up at her, waiting for the rest.
Emily smirked. "He didn't even ask if you were okay. He just told the doctors to handle it and went back to drinking wine with my father. He didn't care enough to visit you, Lyra. Not even once."
With those final, venomous words, Emily opened the door, stepped out into the hallway, and clicked the door shut.
The silence that followed was suffocating.
He didn't care enough to visit.
Those words crushed the last tiny spark of hope hiding deep inside my soul. Xavier didn't care if I lived or died. If I told him about the baby now, what would he do? He would probably take my child away the moment it was born and let Emily raise it as her own. Or worse, he would call my baby weak, just like he called me.
I couldn't stay here. I couldn't let my child grow up in a pack where its mother was despised and its father was a monster.
I waited until night fell completely.
When the clinic became quiet and the nurses went on their evening rounds, I carefully pulled off the heavy blankets. My legs were shaky, but I forced myself to stand up. I put on my worn-out shoes and grabbed my coat.
I quietly slipped out of the clinic through the back door. The cool night air hit my face, refreshing my lungs. Down in the valley, I could hear loud music and cheerful laughter coming from the main hall. Xavier and Emily were celebrating their engagement. The whole pack was busy drinking and dancing. Nobody was paying attention to the borders.
I hurried to my old house, opened my closet, and packed a small leather bag. I took a few warm clothes, my savings from my small job at the bakery, and a silver necklace our mother had left behind.
I didn't write a letter to Xavier. I didn't write a letter to Emily. They didn't deserve my words.
I walked fast through the dark trees, keeping my hand pressed firmly over my stomach. "We are going to be okay," I whispered to the dark forest. "I will protect you."
After nearly an hour of walking through the cold woods, I reached the thick stone markers that showed the end of the Crescent Moon territory. Beyond this line was neutral land—a dangerous, wild forest where no pack ruled.
I took a deep breath and stepped over the boundary line.
I was free.
Suddenly, a loud snap broke through the quiet night.
I froze instantly.
From the dark shadows of the trees ahead, several pairs of yellow, glowing eyes appeared. Huge, dirty men stepped out into the moonlight, wearing torn clothes and carrying sharp iron daggers.
Rogues.
My blood ran cold as six dangerous men slowly surrounded me, blocking my only way forward.
The morning sun rose cold and pale over the sharp mountain peaks, casting a thin, silver light through the high arched windows of the grand bedroom. Outside, a bitter mountain wind howled against the stone walls, carrying dusting flakes of white snow across the dark pine forest below.I woke up early, long before the palace servants came in to light the fresh tallow candles. I lay completely still under the heavy woolen blankets, staring quietly up at the dark wooden beams of the high ceiling. My heart felt heavy and hollow, like a dry well in the middle of a brutal winter.Every single word Kael had spoken to me last night echoed in my mind with sharp, painful clarity."This is just a business contract between us, and it will remain a business contract."I took a slow, deliberate breath, resting my warm palm gently over my lower stomach. My baby was warm, quiet, and safe inside me, and in the end, that was the only truth that truly mattered in this grand, scary palace. He is right, I
I took off my heavy blanket and put it on a wooden chair.Kael stepped inside behind me and shut the heavy door with a small click.I turned around to speak to him. "Thank you for walking with me, Kael. You must be tired."Kael did not answer me right away. He stood very close to me. His silver eyes looked right at my face.In the warm firelight, my dark hair looked pretty, and my eyes looked big and clear. Kael looked at my soft lips, and his heart started beating fast. His mind tried to stop him: Do not touch her! She is just a contract girl! Stay away! But his body moved on its own. He took a slow step closer to me.My heart started beating super fast, like a little drum inside my chest. Thump, thump, thump!Kael raised his big, warm hand. His long fingers gently touched the side of my face. His thumb rubbed my cheek softly. He was being so gentle and nice."Kael..." I whispered in a very quiet voice. He did not say anything. He slowly raised my chin with his fingers. He bent his h
Xavier bent his head down. He wanted to kiss Emily on her mouth so he could feel better. But Emily turned her face away fast! She put her small hands on his chest and pushed him away with all her power!Xavier stepped back. His eyes went wide. "Emily! Why did you do that?""Do not touch me!" Emily yelled, her voice sounding raspy. She wiped her wet cheeks. "Stay away from me, Xavier!""Why are you yelling at me?!" Xavier shouted back, getting very mad. "I am your husband! I am your Alpha!""You do not love me!" Emily screamed, tears running down her face. "You looked at Lyra the whole night! I saw your eyes, Xavier! When she walked down the big stairs in her blue dress, you stared at her! You did not look at me at all! You still care about my stupid sister! You still want Lyra!"Xavier felt very shocked and angry when she said that. His face turned red.In his mind, Xavier was too proud to say the truth. He could not admit that seeing Lyra look like a rich queen had made his heart bea
The giant kitchen was dark and cold. The floor was made of big grey stones. Outside, the loud wind made a scary noise through the iron windows.Alpha Kael stood in the middle of the room. He was very tall and strong. He wore a dark shirt. His face looked very mad.Six young kitchen maids stood against the cold wall. They wore simple grey dresses and white aprons. Their hands were shaking. Their knees were shaking too. They were very scared of Kael.Captain Freya stood by the big wooden door. She wore black armor. She watched the maids with sharp eyes."I want to know the truth right now," Kael said in a very deep, mad voice. "Who touched the sweet tea before my guards took it to the big room last night?"Nobody answered him. The room was totally quiet. You could only hear the hot fire crackling in the fireplace."Answer him now!" Captain Freya yelled, hitting her heavy boot on the hard floor. An old maid named Martha fell down on her knees. She started crying hard."Please, Alpha!" Ma
"Alpha Xavier," Elder Marcus said coldly, opening a large book of ancient laws lying on his marble stand. "Three days ago, you publicly signed a document of rejection and banishment against Lyra Blackwood in front of your own pack elders. Is that correct?"Xavier blinked, his smirk faltering slightly. "Well... yes, but—""By the ancient laws of the High Continental Council," Elder Marcus interrupted smoothly, "when an Alpha rejects a female and banishes her beyond his borders without a trial, he surrenders all legal rights, claims, and authority over her person and any offspring born after the severance."Xavier’s face completely froze. His brain went totally blank."Furthermore," Elder Marcus continued, turning to face the whole assembly, "last night, thirty council members witnessed the ancient Heart of the Royal Moon artifact glow with pure sapphire-blue light upon touching Lady Lyra’s skin."The old elder turned toward me, bowing his head in deep respect."This council officially
Alpha Xavier sat near the front, his golden eyes cold and arrogant, his broad hands resting on his knees. Beside him sat Emily in her yellow gold dress, her hands clenched tightly together, her face looking pale and nervous. In another corner sat Lord Sterling and Lady Victoria. Victoria was wearing a dark green silk dress today, her long golden hair pulled back neatly, her green eyes fixed on the throne with a sharp, calculating glare. The head castle steward stepped forward, holding a long silver staff, and struck the stone floor three times.BANG! BANG! BANG!"ALL HAIL ALPHA KAEL VIRELL!" the steward boomed out. "AND GRAND LUNA LYRA BLACKWOOD!"Alpha Kael walked down the center carpet with heavy, confident steps. Beside him, I walked with slow, graceful dignity, wearing a simple but magnificent dress of deep blue silk. Captain Freya and six elite guards walked right behind us, their iron swords clicking at their hips.I kept my chin held high. I did not look at Xavier, and I did no
