Chapter 4

Author: Twilight Green
I went to the hospital with the pregnancy test to confront Rose. When I walked past the gynaecology department, I saw her sitting in the consultation room, looking pale while clutching a medical report.

There was a small gap at the door, and I could hear the doctor say, "You're six weeks pregnant. The pregnancy is progressing well, and all the test results look normal. Are you sure you want an abortion?"

All I could hear was ringing in my ears as I froze. She was six weeks pregnant, which meant that the baby was mine!

Rose and I had always loved children, and we could never stop talking about having them one day. Not only did we decide the names of our future children, but we even made sure to buy a house in a good school district.

I had imagined countless times just how happy I would be if Rose got pregnant, but she would rather secretly give birth to Alan's baby overseas than have a baby with me.

The consultation room was silent for several seconds before the doctor tried talking her out of an abortion again. "The baby is very healthy. Maybe you should reconsider the abortion if there is no reason to have it."

Rose was silent for a long time before I heard her answer calmly, "I don't need to reconsider. I already have a baby, and this one wasn't planned."

Her words were enough to hurt me. It was painful, and I wanted to dash into the room to confront her. Why? Why did she refuse to have this baby?

However, I stopped myself because I realized I did not have the courage to hear her answer. I was in a daze, and before I realized it, I was outside little Jay's hospital room. The door was not fully closed, and I could see Alan sitting by Jay's bed through the gap in the door, carrying Jay in his arms.

Not long after, Rose walked toward the room from the other end of the corridor and sat next to Alan as if nothing had happened. They sat together alone without any awkwardness, and they interacted like they had been married for years.

Alan kept playing with Jay with a toy, and when Jay laughed, Rose's expression softened.

"Thank you, Alan. Thank you for taking such good care of Jay."

Alan's eyes filled with tears as he gently hugged her around the shoulders.

Rose suddenly looked up and met my eyes through the gap in the door. The gentle look on her face melted away and was replaced with a look of caution. However, her voice was still gentle when she turned to Alan. "Stay here with Jay. I need to take a call outside."

She walked out of the room quickly and grabbed my wrist, pulling me into the fire escape. "What are you doing here?"

It hurt to see her look at me so warily. "Am I a malicious man who would hurt an innocent baby in your eyes, Rose?"

Rose was taken aback, and a pained look flashed in her eyes. "That's not what I mean. I was just worried you couldn't take the truth that Alan and I have registered our marriage, and you might get into a fight with him.

"Alan cares about you a lot, and he feels really guilty about everything that has happened. I don't want things to end badly between both of you."

Rose kept calling out Alan's name with tenderness and focused her concern on him. It never occurred to her to wonder what I was doing at the hospital, and all my suppressed emotions burst to the surface.

My eyes were filled with tears, and everything I wanted to yell at Rose got stuck in my throat. I wanted to confront her about choosing to abort our baby. I wanted to question her about her decision to keep Jay but refuse to give our baby a chance to be born.

Why would she do that when she loved children?

However, I suddenly felt exhausted when I saw the distant look in Rose's eyes. What was there to confront her about? Was I supposed to question her about why a night with Alan resulting in her accidental pregnancy became more important than six years of our relationship?

Should I question her about what the unborn baby in her belly meant to her? Was the answer important?

Rose's husband now was Alan, and I lowered my head to hide my tears from her. "You should get back to Alan and the baby."

She was hesitant. "But you…"

"I won't disturb them."

Rose was relieved by my promise. "All right. You should head home early."

She turned to leave after that, leaving me behind to lean against the cold wall. I stayed that way for a long time without moving, and it was only when Rose completely vanished from my sight that I looked up.

The next patient was called into the gynaecologist's consultation room, and I continued standing where I was, staring in the direction Rose had left while slowly clenching my fists.

That afternoon, I sat at the hospital for a long time. By the time I realized it, the sky had turned dark, and I still had not received any texts from Rose. All I received was a notification from the airline about my flight ticket being issued.

I had been on standby for the earliest flight available, and a ticket was finally available for me in five days to fly to Lunshire.

Three days later, Alan and Rose returned home together and got a divorce. Alan had custody of Jay while Rose paid them child support. He also left Rose's company and joined a startup. With Alan's work capabilities, he probably would have a hard time at work, but I did not bother to find out more about his situation because I was too busy.My new project at work had just started, and the headquarters had included the west district deputy director on the list of promotions. My life consisted of meetings or traveling to client offices for discussions. Two weeks later, the front desk suddenly called me on the office phone. "Mr. Scott, Ms. Sinclair is here again.""Handle this according to our blacklist."Rose had tried to stop me numerous times at the door, and the company ended up blacklisting her due to the harassment. Not long after, I saw the security guards escort her out of the building through the window. She struggled to be released from their grips and waved her hands about

In the second week after the contract was terminated, I received news from my colleagues back home. They told me that Alan had been suspended. The projects he was in charge of kept having problems, and the company initiated an internal investigation into them. As Rose was not in the country, no one was around to cover for him anymore. The finance department requested that he explain the incorrect quotations, while the legal department investigated the issue with the different contract versions in his hands. The project team placed every record of the project delay in front of him.Alan called Rose every day, but she would only pick up one out of ten calls. "Rose, the company wants to suspend me.""I know.""When are you coming back?"Rose was silent for a while before replying, "I still have work over here."Alan choked back a sob. "Are you there because of Walden?"Rose did not answer, but hung up quietly. After that, Alan only received a few texts from Rose.[Cooperate with

Rose did not return home. The next day, Charlie helped her rent an apartment near my company for three months. It was as if she never planned to return alone from the very start. Next, our company was informed that Alan had been removed as the team lead for the project we were working on. Rose took over the project and requested that I be the one to follow up on the project with her company. At the end of her email, she even added: [As this involves core information, I would like to only communicate with Mr. Scott about this project.]I knew what she was planning, but I could not reject any work based on personal issues. The first time we met up to discuss the project, she invited me to a restaurant we visited the first time we traveled to Lunshire. She was wearing the dress from our first date six years ago, and even the bracelet on her wrist was a present I bought for her with the first bonus I earned when I just started working. It was not particularly valuable, and it proba

Rose froze as she stared at the scars on my arm, unable to believe her eyes. "Was this caused by the fire that day?"I pulled down my sleeve. "Yes.""Why didn't you do a skin graft? Why didn't you tell me that you were injured?" Her voice was trembling, and her breathing became erratic. I looked up at her. "What would've happened if I did tell you? Would you have spared a moment to come see me after leaving Alan's side? Or would you have waited until he was done crying before you remembered that I had been admitted into the hospital too?"Rose turned pale. "I had no idea your wound was so serious. I… I thought it was just a minor injury that you could handle by yourself."This again. It was because I could handle it myself that I should admit myself to the hospital, and she could walk past me without hesitation during the fire.Raindrops fell from the umbrella as I looked at her, and I suddenly decided there was no point in hiding certain truths. "I know you aborted our baby, Ro

It was drizzling in Lunshire when I was going home from work.Becca and I were the last group to leave the office. She swung her car keys in her hand and said, "Now that we've saved this project, would you like to have a celebration meal with me?""Doesn't the late-night snack we had yesterday count as a celebration meal?""That was to reward everyone for working overtime."Becca opened the car door for me and said in a businesslike tone, "Today is the real celebration."I was about to get into the car when I heard a hoarse voice calling out behind me, "Walden."It made me stop in my tracks. Even though it had been a month, and I was in another country, I could still recognize Rose's voice. When I turned back to look, she was standing under a street light in front of my office building.Rose must have waited for me a long time because her black coat was wet from the rain, and there were dark rings under her eyes. When she saw me, her eyes lit up, but she was taken aback when she

When I got to work the next day, Becca placed an urgent risk alert on my desk. "A project back home has come up with some issues. The client is demanding that the Lunshire team complete the overseas implementation plan within three days, or they will terminate the contract."I flipped through the document, and my fingers quivered slightly when I saw the client's team lead. It was Alan. This was the project Rose had handed over to him and forcefully had me replaced a month ago.Now that the project had progressed to its overseas implementation, it was a shock to see that the submitted documents were a mess. Ten minutes later, everyone gathered in the meeting room. The project manager projected several emails on the big screen."The client confirmed version A, but three days later, claimed that it was never agreed on. After that, the budget was exceeded by ten times the original amount, and we were given three different deadlines. Three days ago, the client requested that we impleme
