I felt it in my bones before I saw him.

The moon captured his hair, making it look like a blend of brown and silver. His eyes scorched like two pools of heated steel, drilling holes through me as he moved toward me.

‘What do you want now, Aurelius?’ I thought to myself.

Was this part of his twisted plan? Why go through the stress of hiring me if he was just going to finish her off himself? Was he even here for her… or me?

I stilled my advances on Ryanna. Gauging what he would do next he halted his approach, just beyond the edge of the trees.

His presence swelled, pressing on me with an almost physical force. Slowing not just my body, but my mind as well. Ryanna must have felt it, too.

It was almost ironic really. The hunter became the hunted. With him here, my faith was all but certain. I stopped because I knew his target was… Me.

Pouring what remained of my already drained stamina and screaming muscles I hardened my body as much as I could. Almost passing out from my single minded

{Nox’s POV}Just to taunt Ali even more. Rohan’s tongue dragged slowly across his blood-slicked claws again, eyes fixed on him the whole time.Ali’s body trembled under the weight of the incision torn through his ribs, as he lay ought on the ground. His fur was covered in blood along his side, bubbling with every shallow breath. But he didn’t cower. The bastard screamed.Loud, full-bodied, defiant.‘He's got spirit.’I had to consciously relax my body which had gone tense from watching basically at the edge of my seat, the scent of blood rose fast around me. The fight wasn’t over. If anything, it was just beginning.Ali’s growl cracked from deep in his chest, and with a snarl of pure rage, he lunged, charging like a battering ram, teeth wide and claws ready to drag Rohan to hell with him.He didn’t make it halfway.Rohan took a half step forward and slapped him out of the air with a casual backhand, his paw catching Ali across the face so hard it echoed like a thunderclap.Ali's body

  • Rising of a feeble mate   Chapter 73

{Nox’s POV}I watched intently as they circled each other with primal grace. The trees stood too still. Like they sensed what was about to happen.I stayed low, breathing shallow, watching as just enough moonlight slanted through the branches painting the scene below.“Are you sure you want to do this, Ali?” Rohan growled.Ali.That was his name. The name of the last link. The final wolf left who might’ve known enough to expose the truth behind Casper’s assassination. And standing across from him, fangs bared, claws twitching, was the one person I hoped wouldn't show up for the final cull.Rohan.They were both in wolf form now, pacing in slow, wide arcs. The kind of calculated, pre-kill ritual older wolves are still honored. No words. Just eyes. Breaths. And movement.Ali’s wolf was thickly muscled, broad in the shoulders, and peppered with old scars. He had a grey undercoat with a scruffy black top layer which seemed to point upwards stubbornly.Rohan’s was the opposite, sleek and c

  • Rising of a feeble mate   Chapter 72

{Nox’s POV}Everything sounded distant. Muffled. Like I was underwater but with my skull splitting open. The headache wouldn't stop, nor did the ringing.Pain weighed on my ribs. I didn’t even know which part of me was bleeding anymore, just that it was a lot, and most likely everywhere. The trees above me swayed like they were drunk. Or maybe that was just me.‘Definitely me…’I gritted my teeth and tasted metal. This pitiful state somehow felt nostalgic.Where I lay was scorched. Smoke curled up from shattered earth and splintered roots. I was alive, somehow. Seriously burnt, shaken, probably concussed, but alive.I cursed internally, pressing a palm to the side of my head. My hand came away red.“Damn loyalists!”I forced myself up. My muscles screamed at me, but I had to move. My knees were weak and I almost fell, but I banged my shoulder into the nearest tree to keep upright. There was no time to fall apart.I had a couple more targets. A handful of possible locations or targets

  • Rising of a feeble mate   Chapter 71

{Nox’s POV}“I will make them see you for the monster you are, Aurelius.”It was easy to say. But much harder to work on because I had no real trails to follow. My eyes followed the various faces that filled the streets, maybe I'd see someone with a huge “I did it” sign on their back…‘You've got to be kidding me…’I spotted her again.Same direction. Same look on her face.I watched Kiara move toward the Snow Pack with that damn robe on again, head down. I told her not to go to Ryanna.I was off the wall before I even realized it, boots hitting the dirt with more force than necessary. She hadn’t made it far. One swift lunge, a little pull, and she was off the path and in the alley beside the old smithy. Before she could howl, I placed my palms over her mouth.“Didn’t I tell you not to go to her?” I asked pointedly.Kiara blinked hard, her feet dragging slightly on the gravel as she stumbled to a stop. “I wasn’t—I wasn’t going to Ryanna.”“No?” I arched a brow. “Because it sure look

  • Rising of a feeble mate   Chapter 70

{Nox’s POV}“What are you planning?” She asked me.I thought about it for a long time.Would I tell her what I had planned? How did I go about proving Aurelius's hand in her son's death? No. She didn’t deserve this burden. I need to let her grieve.I didn’t expect my silence to affect her much, but it seemed it did… even so, words would fail. Consoling a grieving mother was not an easy endeavour. There were no right words to say.I turned, facing Casper's bed. He hadn’t moved since this happened. His vitals are flat. His heart failed to beat even once. His breath… absent.Yet, Ryanna still held some hope he was alive. Rigor mortis hadn't set in after all.If the gods were alive, they would bring her son back. No… they wouldn't even let her go through something like this. Like my brother had experienced… having to choose such a terrible path. One with no redemption…‘No, this isn't about me.’ I sighed internally. Casper was wrapped in clean linen like he would wake up any second, but

  • Rising of a feeble mate   Chapter 69

{Ryanna’s POV}It’s been hours… No, it’s been longer than that. I’ve lost track of time.I haven’t looked away from his face — not even once.Casper lay there, in the same position he’s been in since they brought him inside. My palms have brushed his hands a thousand times, maybe more… His skin is still warm, but it doesn’t matter. He’s not breathing. His heart isn’t beating and I can feel it… the absence of life in every breath I take that he doesn’t, in every pulse of my own heart. The only thing that makes me even remotely hopeful is the fact that his body hasn’t gone through rigor mortis. It should have by now, shouldn’t it?I held on to every bit of hope I could.I blinked, as I forced my eyes to stay open. The red rimmed edges stung. But still, no tears came. I wish they would. I wish my body would let me release it all. But no. Nothing. My body didn't allow me this mercy. Not when Casper's blood is still fresh on my hands. Not when the reality I’ve fought so hard to ignore is e
