{Ryanna’s POV}

White linen blanketed the field like a second snowfall.

Some bodies were whole. Others had been gathered together with whatever dignity trembling hands could manage. All of them were still. Quiet. Blood soaked through the cloth in too many places to count.

At some point, the white cloth was an equal part red as it was white.

I didn’t cry.

There were no tears left in me.

Not after the number of cubs I counted amongst the dead. Especially one whose linen the wind blew aside when I passed. The boy’s face was frozen in something that looked too much like confusion to be fear.

I tore my eyes away, covering the cloth again.

His face would forever be burned into my mind… “Or would it?” I wondered.

I could already see myself losing touch with my ability to feel after seeing so much death.

I wondered about the cubs that had to grow up in such environments. The parents who lost their sons and daughters… the children who lost their mothers and fathers. Their siblings. All for a w

    {Ryanna’s POV}The howl that marked our return didn’t rise.Too many throats were hoarse from mourning.Nyra and I approached the pack slowly on horseback. What was once a quiet expanse of land had transformed, rows of tents stretched out like markings across the white of snow. Fires crackled low in shielded circles. Wolves moved in silence, some limping, others bandaged, all watching for shadows that hadn’t yet come but could strike at any moment.The air of death was especially thick due to the cold winds.For some reason, no one ever saw the snow fall during the war, yet the soil was always densely covered by it.Nyra exhaled through her nose. “There are more than I expected.”I nodded. “Every able-bodied wolf we called has come.”Her brow tightened. “That’s good. But…”“But it means supplies won’t stretch,” I finished for her.She turned toward me, face unreadable. “We’re already sharing cloaks. Half the warriors haven’t eaten in two days. If this lasts more than a couple of battl

  • Rising of a feeble mate   Chapter 88

    {Ryanna’s POV}Nyra and I watched from the front line of the gathered troops, our paws half buried in blood-wet snow.The moon hung like a pale witness above us, useless and silent, casting the battlefield in long lifeless shadows. Just ahead, they crept. Hulking shapes that moved with unnatural speed. Death Wraiths.At least twenty of them, maybe more circled us. Their eyes glowed several colours, no warmth in any of them. Just pure hunger.Nyra sniffed the air beside me. “They’ve surrounded us.”“I counted fifteen near the ridge,” I muttered. “However, many of them are probably within the trees. But these beasts never really attack with direction. Which means…”She huffed. “...means there’s a leader. A commander close by.”I nodded. “Where there are Wraiths this coordinated, there’s always someone guiding them.”Nyra’s lip curled. “And to our benefit, they can't be controlled from too far off.”“Even if they can, they think they don’t have to. They think they can overwhelm us with

  • Rising of a feeble mate   Chapter 87

    {Ryanna’s POV}The atmosphere still lingered with the aroma of fire, long after the last blaze had died.Char and blood. Fur and soot. And beneath it all, something sickly, like burnt bone marrow and scorched bile.I stepped over a collapsed beam, and my boots sank into something that might be the floor of a small dining hall. The walls were gone now. So were the wolves who once laughed inside it.We were too late.A decent number of the pack mates had been slaughtered before we arrived. And the remaining… most wished they hadn’t.I felt my heart tighten as I moved through the wreckage slowly, my jaw clenched, and each breath felt like a weight pressing on my ribs.A pup no older than seven winters lay twirled under his brother’s corpse, tiny arms frozen in place where they clutched him like a doll. The boy’s eyes were shut, but there was no peace in his face. Only fear, sealed in by fire.I snapped my head away. Already recreating the image in my mind.Casper reached him first. He di

    {Ryanna’s POV}They stood around me like pillars. My proud Council. Young, yet old in ways I couldn't describe, due to the kind of life…we have lived.Each of them stared at me like I was the problem that needed solving.“I’m not saying give in,” Basten said, arms crossed, “But we’re not made of steel. We need numbers. These neutral packs have them.”“You mean Ilia and Coren?” I asked. “The ones gave such a brazen ultimatum?”Ophelia didn’t meet my eyes. “We have to decide our stance now.”“That's what we're trying to do,” I muttered.We stood in the Council chamber. Maps spread over the table, small marks showing where Aurelius’s forces were pressing hardest. There were red chips, representing us. And then there were the black ones, far too many of which represented Aurelius, and his allies.“Look. They won’t budge unless you make a concession. Just words. You don’t have to chain anyone up. Say you’ll consider it after they've sent forces to help us.” Basten added.“I won't lie,” I

  • Rising of a feeble mate   Chapter 85

    {Ryanna’s POV}A wolf crashed through the snow with a snarl, only to be met mid-leap by another's claw. He fell lifeless as his blood soaked everything around.To the right, Jade had a rogue pinned beneath his foot, cracking ribs with the pressure of his stomp. A war cry ripped from the throat of one of ours — followed by silence. I turned just in time to see him fall, not dead, but unmoving.Another rogue barreled through three soldiers at once, claws out, breath steaming. We were winning, but barely. And at too steep a cost.Every inch gained came with a limb.The battlefield stank of blood and desperation.The smell twisted in the air thick, bitter, dragging the morning breeze under with ease.All around me, wolves — my wolves — groaned, clung to consciousness, or lay flat on their backs staring at nothing. The snow beneath them was trampled into brown slush, soaked in more pain than water.I watched it unfold from the hill's ridge as the wind tugged lightly at my cloak.I folded m
