Rhett

I have always known my father to be a brutal beast.

Brutal doesn’t even cut it. Merriam-Webster needs to invent a couple more words, because there are not enough of them in the English language to describe how much of a monster he is.

My body aches and stings all over, breathing is a nightmare I can’t escape, and my skin is already turning to a disgusting shade of blue and purple from all the bruises. To make it worse, Savannah is still doting on me despite telling her I needed to be left alone. I wish she didn’t have to be so perfect every time and remind me that I can never be that.

I want to snap at her and tell her to just fuck off, but then I look over at the bed opposite mine.

Cassian is seated there with his headphones plugged in, but I can tell he’s not listening to a damn thing. His fingers are constantly twitching and adjusting them over his head every goddamn second. His jaw is also grinding together so hard, and I’m not sure there’s anyone who will keep listening to music if it makes them that riled up.

I smile to myself.

Savannah being here makes him uncomfortable. I don’t know why, and frankly, I don’t even want to know why.

But I’ll be damned if I didn’t capitalize on his discomfort.

If Cassian wanted to play games that allowed my father to do this to me, then he could as well watch as someone who cared about me treated my wounds.

“Does it hurt right here, Rhett?” Savannah asks as she touches my bottom lip. Her voice is sickeningly sweet that it makes me want to gag, but I just keep my eyes locked on Cassian.

“A little,” I lie softly, letting my head tilt slightly into her hand. “But you’re here now, Savvy. It’s fine.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Cassian’s grip tighten around his phone until his knuckles go white.

He rips his eyes away from me, turning his back to us entirely and staring out the window.

I feel an odd sense of satisfaction despite my pain.

But after another ten minutes, the game loses its flavor.

Cassian completely freezes, ignoring us so thoroughly that he might as well be a statue. The spite keeping me going evaporates, leaving me only with annoyance at my girlfriend I don’t want.

“Savannah,” I say, “just leave.”

She blinks, startled by the sudden change in my attitude. I can’t blame her to be honest. “But Rhett, the swelling—”

“I said leave. Now. I need to sleep.”

She looks hurt, but she gathers her things and slips out the door without another word.

I expect him to show some sort of reaction to her leaving, maybe relief, maybe he changes position, but the asshole doesn’t look back at me.

Groaning, I force myself up from the bed and drag my body into the bathroom. I turn the handle, and the second the water hits my skin, I have to bite down on my tongue to keep from screaming. It stings like a motherfucker.

That shit feels like I am being stabbed by several tiny needles; it’s even worse than when my physiotherapist made me undergo dry needling for constant tense muscles. I wash the dried blood off as quickly as possible, leaning heavily against the tiled wall just to keep my knees from buckling.

When I finally step out with a pair of sweatpants slung low on my hips, I am trembling from the effort it took me to stay upright. Getting dressed is a pain in my ass as I try to pull a loose t-shirt over my head. When I lift my arms, I feel a sharp jolt of pain that makes me freeze halfway, leaving the shirt trapped, a strangled gasp escaping my throat.

Through the thin cotton of the shirt, I can feel his eyes on me.

The unease creeps under my skin as Cassian is watching me struggle, and the humiliation of being this weak in front of him makes my blood boil. I finally manage to wrench the shirt down, panting as I sink heavily into the chair by my desk.

I need the painkillers.

My eyes scan the desk and land on the small orange bottle of pills. It’s right there, just a few inches out of my immediate reach. I lean forward, stretching my hand out, but Goddess, that feels even worse.

I’m so extremely weak that I can barely do anything. My fingers just brush the plastic bottle and knock the bottle farther.

Great. Just fucking great.

I hear a sigh of irritation followed by the rustle of sheets and then footsteps crossing the room. I don’t look up. I can’t.

Cassian rolls his eyes, leaning over my shoulder. He picks up the drug for me, but instead of setting it down, he shoves the bottle harshly into my open palm.

Our hands touch.

Just the feeling of his skin against mine sends something straight down my spine. It’s not pain—I wish it was. It is unfortunately that same feeling from last night as my wolf howls inside me, itching for more while Cassian remains completely oblivious to the fact.

I look up hoping to at least see something in his eyes, but there’s nothing. Cassian simply pulls his hand away as if he’s been burned.

Fuck.

I swallow the pills without water, desperately waiting for the numbness to kick in. But there’s one more problem. I forgot to rub the antiseptic ointment on the deep wounds I have, especially the ones near my shoulder blade.

I pick up the tube of cream, twisting my arm awkwardly behind my back to reach it, but it’s impossible. I am not exactly flexible, and my injuries make me even less so. I end up just smearing the ointment uselessly on my neck, swearing under my breath as tears of frustration prick my eyes.

I can’t let him see me cry.

But it’s too late as a single drop of tear falls from my eye.

I hear a slow, mocking exhale from across the room, so I look up through my messy hair to see Cassian looking amused.

“You know you can just ask for my help, right?” he says as he steps toward me. “I don’t bite.”

Rhett I needed to get away from Blackridge.Between feeling suffocated by my father paying me surprise visits, the rumors spreading around the hockey team, and Cassian constantly finding new ways to drive me insane in that dorm room, I just needed to breathe. So, I packed a bag and decided to take Savannah to my late mother’s cottage for the weekend. It was a small, secluded place deep in the woods, about an hour away from the campus. I hadn’t been here in about three years because every single time, I remembered that she had died and how she died, making me angry and bitter all the same. But now, I had come here to confront my worst fears. The plan we had was simple: clean up the dust and make dinner together. Savannah had been really excited about it, but I really was not. It just felt like a relief to be out of the city.“It’s really beautiful here, Rhett,” Savannah said softly, placing a box of groceries on the wooden kitchen counter. She smiled at me, looking around at the dusty

  • Rooming With The Enemy: The Alpha’s Forbidden Mate   14. Lying To Myself

Cassian Three bubbles appear on the screen as soon as I send the text, dancing for a few seconds as Jacob starts to type a response, and then they suddenly disappear. I wait for a few more minutes for a response, hoping it’s because of a bad Wi-Fi connection on his end or mine, but there is nothing. A cold sweat breaks out across the back of my neck. I tuck my phone deep into my pocket, look once at the closed bathroom door where the water is still running, and step out of the room without thinking. My legs are moving before my brain can even formulate a rational excuse for what I’m doing. I keep telling myself I’m only doing this because I want to destroy Rhett my way, but the panic I feel is telling a completely different story. I am only lying to myself about what I truly want. The hallway is freezing cold, and I am not even sure if Jacob us in my block or not. There is no reason why Rhett should be going out again this night, so it can’t be tonight he has whatever gang pl

CassianRhett walks into the room just as I am putting away my laundry I have just received from the dry cleaners. He sighs when he sees me and rolls his eyes, dropping his helmet on his bed. “So, what’s this about, huh?”“What?” I ask, blinking innocently at him. I cross my arms over my chest as I take a few steps toward him.“Jacob? Savannah?” He scoffs and shakes his head, sucking his teeth. “Yeah, you’re up to something that’s not good.”I tilt my head at him and lift my brows. “You sound paranoid. I hear therapy works for constant paranoia… that it might be PTSD from something traumatic. Or maybe you’re scared of karma. Did you do something bad, Rhettie?”He lets out a laugh of disbelief, and this time, he is the one that takes a step forward, until there’s almost no space between us. “Wow, Cassian. Who knew you had so much evil in you… you mentioned therapy to Savannah, didn’t you?”“She agrees you need it,” I smile graciously. “We got to talking, and she admits there’s somethin

RhettCassian is up to something, and I need to know what.First, he had been playing nice with Savannah by the bleachers, and as soon as practice was over, she had come to tell me that my roommate was nice and cared about me. Now, I am walking into the locker room to see Jacob sitting and talking with Cassian fucking Storm. I just can’t prove it yet, but I am sure as fuck my gut feeling isn’t wrong.“What the hell is this about, Storm?” I ask in a cold tone, walking up to him until I’m completely in his space.“I don’t know, Reed. What do you want it to be about?”“Stay the fuck away from this arena or space, Cassian,” I warn him.The door opens behind me, the rest of my teammates pouring in. I take a step back, give a tight smile, and then walk off.Savannah is waiting for me outside, a hoodie on her arms. “You look angry, babe.”I say nothing in response to her and keep walking while she follows behind me.“You’re walking to the dorm? And you didn’t even change…” she comments.I st

CassianFrom where I am sitting on the bleachers, I can see the exact moment the rug is pulled from under Rhett’s feet.He is standing on the ice, looking completely paralyzed as the coach yells at the entire team. His mouth is slightly open, his eyes blinking in absolute confusion as Jacob gets chewed out and kicked off the team for a petition he obviously knows nothing about. I can’t help the slow smirk that spreads across my lips. It’s beautiful.Rhett thought he had me cornered this morning with his little stack of evidence. He really thought being the son of the owner of Blackridge meant he could just boss me around and force me into submission. But he forgot that I know how to play dirty, too; even though I admit I was very careless about getting him to be my roommate. At least I have learned my lesson from it.He wanted a public apology on the university forum, so I gave him one—and I just made sure to route the digital signature through Jacob’s student portal before I hit uplo

His eyes are locked into mine, anger evident in them as he tries to process that I actually have him cornered and he doesn’t have much of a choice here.“You’re a real piece of work, Reed,” he spits, reaching out to grab his laptop. His eyes still don’t move away from mine even as he opens it.When it comes on, the bright light illuminates his face, making my heart flutter just a little. I swallow, trying to push away the feelings my wolf is throwing at me.Cassian’s fingers hit the keyboard with so much force I’m surprised the keys don’t pop out or stop working. He clicks a few times, and I can literally hear his jaw grinding so hard. After a final, aggressive tap, he turns the laptop around and looks up at me.“There,” Cassian snaps, glaring at me. “It’s gone. Completely wiped. Happy now?”“No,”
