Need Your Help

Rhett

“I don’t need your help,” I spit at him coldly, averting my gaze. The last thing I wanted was Cassian or anyone helping me because they felt pity for me. Seeing me in this state was bad enough.

“Kinda looks like you do,” he smirks, snatching the tube out of my hand. He sinks onto the bed beside me and presses the ointment into his palm, then moves it over the wound. His hands travel to other spots, delicately applying it, and it takes every ounce of restraint left in my body to stop my wolf from losing it.

I sit there wishing I could just be like him—unaffected by touching me.

My heart does a little squeeze as I realize he doesn’t even feel an ounce of what I feel.

There’s a difference in how his touch feels now. He’s no longer applying the ointment; instead, his finger is tracing a bruise and he lets out a shaky breath.

“Thanks,” I snap, shifting away from his touch.

“Should you even be going for training?”

“Why do you care?” I snap, even though I know he is right. It has only been twenty-four hours, and despite the advantage of being a werewolf with speedy recovery, the number my father did on me will take at least a week to heal. I should be in bed, resting and taking meds, but just lying there would make me lose my mind.

“I don’t,” replies Cassian with a roll of his eyes. “I’m just tired of hearing you groan every second. Putting your body under more stress means you’ll be doing that every millisecond.”

“Fuck off,” I roll my eyes, grabbing my duffel bag as I walk out of the dorm. I take in a breath, preparing myself for a day filled with pretense. I had to be tough, and I have to make sure that no matter the circumstances, no one can know I’m in pain.

I’m not sure how I want to do that.

I just have to.

By the time I put on my skates in the locker room, sweat is already stinging my eyes. Just bending over to tie the laces feels like someone is twisting a knife into my side.

“You look terrible, Rhett,” Matt says, leaning against the lockers. His eyes narrow as he watches me stand up slowly. “Why was your dad mad, by the way?”

“I’m fine, Matt. Just drop it,” I growl, my voice getting deeper to warn him off.

He holds up his hands in mock surrender. “Also, just to warn you, they’re considering kicking you off captain. Depends on your performance this week.”

“What?” I ask, my voice rising in annoyance.

“You don’t know about the petition amongst students?”

“What petition?”

“Man, after the last game, they think you’re fucked. Everyone wants you off… this week will be your evaluation. If I were you, I’d tell Coach you got injured so he puts that into consideration.”

“How come I’ve never heard of it?” I say through gritted teeth, putting on my helmet. The plastic scrapes against the bruise on my jaw, making my vision blur for a second.

Matt only shrugs. “By the way, Jacob wants to be captain so bad, so better watch it with him.”

“Thanks.”

When I step onto the ice, the cold air usually wakes me up. This time, the coldness makes everything ache.

We start a five-on-five full-contact practice drill.

Just my luck.

For the first fifteen minutes, I play it safe, passing the puck early to avoid getting hit. I can feel my wolf, Rook, getting anxious inside me, whining at how stupid this is. My pride won’t let me sit on the bench or admit I am too injured to play. With whatever petition this is, I’m definitely not going to sit it out. Only God knows if they’ll start another one about me giving excuses. More reason to just endure.

The puck goes into the corner loosely just then. My instinct takes over, so I skate fast to get it, turn, and the sudden twist hurts my back.

“Fucking hell,” I gasp through gritted teeth as my knees buckle a bit.

Before I can get my balance, a dark jersey flashes in my vision.

It’s Jacob.

He’s skating fast with hunched shoulders, and I realize just then that he’s not even playing the puck; he’s just trying to take me down.

I prepare for the hit, closing my eyes and waiting for the pain that will show everyone I’m weak.

But it never happens.

Instead, a loud crack echoes through the rink.

I open my eyes, and a figure hits Jacob, taking the hit instead of me. Jacob flies backward, crashes into the ice, and slides into the boards.

Standing in his place, wearing sneakers and a hoodie, is Cassian.

Rhett I needed to get away from Blackridge.Between feeling suffocated by my father paying me surprise visits, the rumors spreading around the hockey team, and Cassian constantly finding new ways to drive me insane in that dorm room, I just needed to breathe. So, I packed a bag and decided to take Savannah to my late mother’s cottage for the weekend. It was a small, secluded place deep in the woods, about an hour away from the campus. I hadn’t been here in about three years because every single time, I remembered that she had died and how she died, making me angry and bitter all the same. But now, I had come here to confront my worst fears. The plan we had was simple: clean up the dust and make dinner together. Savannah had been really excited about it, but I really was not. It just felt like a relief to be out of the city.“It’s really beautiful here, Rhett,” Savannah said softly, placing a box of groceries on the wooden kitchen counter. She smiled at me, looking around at the dusty

  • Rooming With The Enemy: The Alpha’s Forbidden Mate   14. Lying To Myself

Cassian Three bubbles appear on the screen as soon as I send the text, dancing for a few seconds as Jacob starts to type a response, and then they suddenly disappear. I wait for a few more minutes for a response, hoping it’s because of a bad Wi-Fi connection on his end or mine, but there is nothing. A cold sweat breaks out across the back of my neck. I tuck my phone deep into my pocket, look once at the closed bathroom door where the water is still running, and step out of the room without thinking. My legs are moving before my brain can even formulate a rational excuse for what I’m doing. I keep telling myself I’m only doing this because I want to destroy Rhett my way, but the panic I feel is telling a completely different story. I am only lying to myself about what I truly want. The hallway is freezing cold, and I am not even sure if Jacob us in my block or not. There is no reason why Rhett should be going out again this night, so it can’t be tonight he has whatever gang pl

CassianRhett walks into the room just as I am putting away my laundry I have just received from the dry cleaners. He sighs when he sees me and rolls his eyes, dropping his helmet on his bed. “So, what’s this about, huh?”“What?” I ask, blinking innocently at him. I cross my arms over my chest as I take a few steps toward him.“Jacob? Savannah?” He scoffs and shakes his head, sucking his teeth. “Yeah, you’re up to something that’s not good.”I tilt my head at him and lift my brows. “You sound paranoid. I hear therapy works for constant paranoia… that it might be PTSD from something traumatic. Or maybe you’re scared of karma. Did you do something bad, Rhettie?”He lets out a laugh of disbelief, and this time, he is the one that takes a step forward, until there’s almost no space between us. “Wow, Cassian. Who knew you had so much evil in you… you mentioned therapy to Savannah, didn’t you?”“She agrees you need it,” I smile graciously. “We got to talking, and she admits there’s somethin

  • Rooming With The Enemy: The Alpha’s Forbidden Mate   12. Cassian… He’s A Gem

RhettCassian is up to something, and I need to know what.First, he had been playing nice with Savannah by the bleachers, and as soon as practice was over, she had come to tell me that my roommate was nice and cared about me. Now, I am walking into the locker room to see Jacob sitting and talking with Cassian fucking Storm. I just can’t prove it yet, but I am sure as fuck my gut feeling isn’t wrong.“What the hell is this about, Storm?” I ask in a cold tone, walking up to him until I’m completely in his space.“I don’t know, Reed. What do you want it to be about?”“Stay the fuck away from this arena or space, Cassian,” I warn him.The door opens behind me, the rest of my teammates pouring in. I take a step back, give a tight smile, and then walk off.Savannah is waiting for me outside, a hoodie on her arms. “You look angry, babe.”I say nothing in response to her and keep walking while she follows behind me.“You’re walking to the dorm? And you didn’t even change…” she comments.I st

CassianFrom where I am sitting on the bleachers, I can see the exact moment the rug is pulled from under Rhett’s feet.He is standing on the ice, looking completely paralyzed as the coach yells at the entire team. His mouth is slightly open, his eyes blinking in absolute confusion as Jacob gets chewed out and kicked off the team for a petition he obviously knows nothing about. I can’t help the slow smirk that spreads across my lips. It’s beautiful.Rhett thought he had me cornered this morning with his little stack of evidence. He really thought being the son of the owner of Blackridge meant he could just boss me around and force me into submission. But he forgot that I know how to play dirty, too; even though I admit I was very careless about getting him to be my roommate. At least I have learned my lesson from it.He wanted a public apology on the university forum, so I gave him one—and I just made sure to route the digital signature through Jacob’s student portal before I hit uplo

RhettCassian doesn’t move for a very long time.He just sits there on the bed, staring up at me with a murderous expression that could literally kill someone if looks were capable of that. His eyes are locked into mine, anger evident in them as he tries to process that I actually have him cornered and he doesn’t have much of a choice here.“You’re a real piece of work, Reed,” he spits, reaching out to grab his laptop. His eyes still don’t move away from mine even as he opens it.When it comes on, the bright light illuminates his face, making my heart flutter just a little. I swallow, trying to push away the feelings my wolf is throwing at me.Cassian’s fingers hit the keyboard with so much force I’m surprised the keys don’t pop out or stop working. He clicks a few times, and I can literally hear his jaw grinding so hard. After a final, aggressive tap, he turns the laptop around and looks up at me.“There,” Cassian snaps, glaring at me. “It’s gone. Completely wiped. Happy now?”“No,”

RhettI am so fucking tired of this.I stand there, the blood rushing so loudly in my ears. Cassian is staring up at me with a smug smirk etched onto his face. • Rooming With The Enemy: The Alpha’s Forbidden Mate   Chapter Six

Rhett I have always known my father to be a brutal beast. Brutal doesn’t even cut it. Merriam-Webster needs to invent a couple more words, because there are not enough of them in the English language to describe how much of a monster he is. My body aches and stings all over, breathing is a nig

Cassian’s POVSince last night, Rhett hasn’t spared me a glance. He had just pushed me off with so much force and gone to the bathroom, then after several hours he went to bed but didn’t sleep. He spent the night tossing and turning—so did I, thinking of the look in his eyes when I hovered above
