Eleanor’s eyes locked with mine as Ethan and I stood in the silent hallway of his father’s mansion. She had followed us from the garden and it looked like she didn't plan on leaving either.

“I need to speak to Ethan privately,” I said softly.

"Please."

Ethan glanced between us, sensing the tension that could be felt from a mile away.

“Mom, maybe—” he tried to say but Eleanor interrupted.

“No.” she stepped forward and looped her arm around his. “If there’s something to say, it can be said in front of me. I am your mother, after all.”

I wanted to scream. She knew i was on to her. I could feel it in her eyes and the way she stared at me like a cornered cat. I had to think fast. If I pushed too hard, she'd know I had seen the briefcase. If I hesitated, Ethan might lose interest in whatever I had to say and leave.
