Chapter 4

Author: Maroon Cypress
That blue suit had been personally designed for me by my late grandmother. As an internationally renowned fashion designer, it was her final masterpiece.

In my previous life, I had once pointed at it and told Abigail happily that I wanted to wear it on our wedding day.

I had always kept it carefully stored in the Foster family's villa on the outskirts of Jorvale. I had no idea when Abigail took it, and I certainly didn't know that she gave it to Louis.

"Take it off immediately!" I said coldly.

Panic flickered across Louis' eyes. "Abby bought this especially for me!"

Abigail flew into a rage. "What's wrong with you, Connor? If you want to bully someone, at least consider the occasion. You're screaming like a madman! Someone acting like this has no right to be with me—"

I shouted back, "Abigail, explain yourself clearly! Where did this suit come from?"

"I bought it!" she snapped, raising her voice as well. "Connor, if you keep making a scene, you're going to regret it!"

Louis spoke up. "Please don't argue because of me. Oh—"

In his panic, Louis jerked his arm upward, and I watched helplessly as he ripped the cuff of this one-of-a-kind suit wide open.

My mind reeled, and I hit him across the face.

Louis covered his face, looking utterly aggrieved. "Connor, even if you're jealous of me, you still have to think about Abby."

Abigail's fury nearly burst through the screen. "Connor, apologize to Louie immediately!"

"What are you doing?"

A pleasant scent of gardenia filled my nose as a calm and cool female voice sounded above me. I hadn't expected to see Grace Sutton here.

Louis had no idea who she was. His face twisted as he snapped, "Who do you think you are? Do you know that I'm—"

"I don't know you. I only know that this gentleman is the only heir in the current generation of the Foster family," Grace replied.

She raised her eyes slightly, her gaze icy. "Are you trying to assault the only heir of the Foster family in public?"

At the words "only heir of the Foster family", Louis visibly trembled. Abigail also fell silent.

Grace positioned herself to block Abigail and Louis from view and looked up at me. Her voice held a barely perceptible softness. "Mr. Foster, would you like me to accompany you home?"

On the day of my 20th birthday banquet, Abigail still looked displeased when she entered.

"Mr. Foster Senior wants the four of us to go to his study later. The results will be announced privately first," she said to the other three women.

Then she walked up to me and said, "Connor, if you apologize to Louie now, I might still consider forgiving you."

Her movement was too abrupt, and the champagne in her hand nearly splashed onto me. Someone pulled me back just in time, and I stepped away.

I turned around and heard Grace ask softly, "Are you alright?"

When Abigail saw that it was her, she scoffed disdainfully. "Women from insignificant families always try to ingratiate themselves. Don't think showing up gives you the right to marry into the Foster family. You're only here to make up the numbers."

She said to me, "Connor, this is the last time I'll ask you. Are you apologizing to Louie or not?"

I turned my head away, ignoring her. Grace narrowed her eyes slightly and watched us in silence.

"Connor, don't come crying and begging me for forgiveness later," Abigail said before storming off.

Half an hour before the banquet began, the eldest daughters of each of Jorvale's four major families gathered in Dad's study. What they didn't know was that I was in the adjacent room, watching everything unfold through the surveillance feed.

With Dad's approval, the lawyer solemnly read the document aloud.

"After official notarization, Grace Sutton is hereby designated as the marital partner of Connor Foster, the seventh-generation sole heir of the Foster family. She is granted full authority over the finances and internal affairs of both Foster Group and Sutton Group."

"She seems to be livestreaming too!" someone shouted. The scene instantly descended into chaos. With a grim expression, I opened the livestream and saw a face that was emaciated, consumed by madness. It was Abigail."Get Connor here!" she screamed at the camera. "If I don't see him within ten minutes, I'll kill myself at the headquarters of Foster Group!"Suddenly, my phone was taken from my hand by Grace. She gently smoothed the crease between my brows and said, "Don't worry. Let me take care of something this trivial."I held her hand and shook my head. "This started with me, so I should be the one to end it. Let me handle this."When I appeared before Abigail, her face was soaked with tears, and her eyes were bloodshot."Connor, I have lost everything! This is all because of you!" she shouted. She ripped open her clothes, revealing a row of explosives strapped around her waist. "Make Grace leave you and marry me! Otherwise, I will detonate this right here!"She laughed, her

"You've caused so much trouble for Abby and the Chandler family. We've done everything we could!" Mr. Chandler said.It seemed that Louis' disappearance in my previous life was orchestrated by Mr. Chandler. No matter how Mr. Chandler and Louis argued, Abigail remained completely unmoved. She stared at me relentlessly and shouted, "Connor, I was wrong! Can you give me another—"A piercing police siren cut her off."If you have anything to say, say it to the police. We're in a hurry to get married," Grace said. She glanced at Abigail with utter disdain. "You're the heiress of the Chandler family. Don't you know how to behave with any dignity?"Abigail was forced into the police car, yet her gaze remained stubbornly fixed on me until Grace and I walked away hand in hand.Fortunately, Grace had prepared in advance, and the police arrived just in time to prevent any delay to our wedding. At the estate, where lilies of the valley swayed gently, Grace and I solemnly pledged our lives

Abigail scratched Louis until his face was bloody, and the two of them were finally escorted away after the police arrived. In the middle of the night, Abigail came back again and sat outside the gate until morning. The butler said, "Mr. Foster, there's no need for you to worry. Mr. Foster Senior and the Sutton family both assigned people to keep watch on her. Mr. Foster Senior also said he would cut off all dealings with Chandler Group."I replied without much interest, "Got it."Then I turned my gaze to Grace on the screen. "Why did you inspect the venue by yourself? Were you tired?"Her eyes gleamed with warmth as she smiled. "I was a little tired, but being able to marry you truly made me so happy."My heart skipped a beat, and my fingertips unconsciously traced the outline of her face on the screen. "Grace.""What's wrong?" she asked."I missed you. Wait for me. I'm coming to you," I answered.…Abigail didn't appear again for a long time, likely because that day had brok

That day, I woke up late and was having brunch when the butler said, "Mr. Hayes is outside. He says he's here to visit Mr. Foster Senior."I let out a cold laugh and walked to the entrance, where I saw Louis. He was arguing fiercely with the security guard at the entrance, his face red with anger. "How dare you stop me? Mr. Foster Senior treats me like his own son!"I strolled over unhurriedly. "Who do you think you are? No matter how bad my dad's memory gets, he would never confuse his son with someone he's sponsoring."At the word "sponsoring", Louis' expression shifted repeatedly. He forced a smile. "Connor, is Mr. Foster Senior here? I want to talk to him and see if there is a chance for me to return to Foster Group."I scoffed. "Didn't you resign on your own to become Abigail's assistant?"Hearing that, Louis' face drained of color.I raised an eyebrow. He was the man Abigail had sworn was her true love in my previous life. It had only been a month, and he was already strug

"I won't believe it unless you show me the video as evidence!" Abigail said through clenched teeth.Dad said nothing more. He raised his hand to call the bodyguards, but I stopped him. "Since the Chandler family has made a request, we should at least show them some courtesy."The video was played in front of everyone.Abigail stared at the screen without blinking. When she saw that I answered "Grace Sutton" without hesitation the moment Dad finished speaking, her pupils visibly contracted.Grace froze beside me for a moment, then tightened her grip on my hand."Connor Foster, you'd better stop right now!" Abigail shouted.I looked at her in confusion. Her hair was disheveled, and her makeup smeared. She lunged at me frantically, trying to grab my arm. She said, "Even if you're trying to make me jealous, there should be limits. There's no need to drag marriage into this out of spite. If you keep this up, there will be no turning back!"Grace pulled me behind her, her expressio

Grace lifted her head abruptly, eyes wide with surprise.A deafening crash rang out as something shattered."That's impossible!" Abigail cried out.Dad frowned and asked, "Ms. Chandler, do you have any objections to the decision made by the Foster family?"He exuded overwhelming authority. Abigail lowered her head, yet she continued muttering under her breath. "How could that be? How could Connor not choose me?"Dad's voice had lost all trace of warmth. "Why would he have to choose you? You've trampled on his dignity again and again."Did you really think that I wouldn't notice just because I wasn't there? I didn't intervene only because I knew Connor liked you. Don't be so overconfident, Ms. Chandler."Abigail kept repeating "impossible" in a near-hysterical state.Dad waved his hand and had her dragged out of the room.Once everyone left, Dad called me over. "Connor, have you truly made up your mind? Once this is announced publicly, there will be no turning back."I nodded
