In spite of my best intentions to avoid adhering to my mother, here I was in her fucking car on our way to meeting my “new family.” “You could at least try not to look like a fucking criminal for one day.” My mother’s voice sliced through the car like broken glass. I kept my eyes on the rain dragging itself across the tinted window beside me. Greene’s streets blurred into silver and black while cigarette smoke curled lazily from my lips. “Did you hear me?” she snapped. I took another drag. “Unfortunately.” Mirabelle Knox gripped the steering wheel tighter. Her diamond rings flashed under the streetlights. Everything about her screamed elegance. Well, everything except the way she looked at me. That part was always ugly. “You embarrass me every time you open your mouth, Zephyr.” “Then stop talking to me.” Her laughter was cold. “You think this attitude makes you tough? You’re twenty-one years old and still acting like a self-destructive asshole.” I smirked faintly. “Genetics, maybe.” That hit the nerve I expected. Her head whipped toward me for half a second before she looked back at the road and quietly said, “Don’t you dare compare yourself to him.” There it was. The ghost sitting between us in the car. My father. The drunk, violent bastard. Rotten to the fucking core. The man whose face I apparently inherited. I leaned my head back against the seat. “You already do that enough for both of us.” “You are just a replica of him.” I stayed quiet. “You fight like him.” Another silence. “You make it a point to ruin everything precious around you exactly like—” “For fuck’s sake, Mother,” I muttered. “Do you ever get tired of hearing yourself talk?” The brakes jerked slightly. “Excuse me?” “You heard me, Mother.” Her jaw tightened. “You think moving into this house is easy for me? You think it’s nice to be called the wife of a drunk?” she hissed. “You think I wanted to drag you into my new marriage looking like this? Looking like him?” I laughed under my breath, bitter and tired. “There it is.” “You should be grateful Caspian even agreed to let you stay with us.” “Yeah?” I looked at her finally. “Tell your new husband thanks for adopting the family disappointment.” “Stop acting like a victim.” “Start acting like a mother.” The silence became loud. The kind that made storms feel quiet. Mirabelle’s nails dug into the steering wheel as the mansion gates slowly opened ahead of us. Massive iron gates. Tall stone walls. Warm golden lights glowing through enormous windows. All a replica of our last home. My mother’s type of taste when it came to mansions. New York City royalty type of rich. Caspian Vale definitely had money hidden somewhere beneath that police badge or else— I snapped my head toward my mother. She must’ve bought it for him. My reason for drawing to this conclusion was because I’d researched every fucking thing about my “stepfather.” The summary of my research was none other than the fact that the man was one of the poorest police officers here in the city. “Listen to me carefully,” my mother said coldly as the car rolled into the driveway. “You will not ruin this for me. You will not bring your filthy habits into that house. And you will stay the hell away from Elowen.” My expression darkened slightly. “Elowen?” “My stepdaughter.” I frowned. Something about the name felt familiar. I didn’t try to think deeper. I had lots of girls falling at my feet every day, screaming their fucking names in my ears. Maybe that’s where I heard Elowen from. The car stopped. Rain hammered against the roof. Mirabelle stepped out first without another word. Good. I was done hearing her voice. The second my boots hit the wet driveway, I slammed the car door hard enough to shake the entire vehicle. Thunder cracked somewhere above us. I reached into my jacket, pulled out the half-empty cigarette pack, and lit one immediately. The smoke burned my lungs. Perfect. Just what I wanted. For a few seconds, I just stood there in the rain outside the mansion while movers carried boxes through the front doors. A fresh start. That’s what Mirabelle called this. Bullshit. There was no such thing as a fresh start for people like me. Only different ways to rot. I inhaled deeply before crushing the cigarette beneath my boot. Then I headed inside. The house smelled warm. The faint scent of vanilla filled the air. Voices echoed somewhere deeper in the mansion. I walked toward them to see my supposed stepfather laughing. “Zephyr’s here!” he called out warmly. I nearly rolled my eyes. I caught sight of a girl who appeared at the top of the staircase. And my entire body went still. She was dressed in a soft blue sweater, short skirts that did nothing to cover her great shape, long hair falling over one shoulder. She glanced below at each of us, one after another, before her eyes rested on me. They went wide immediately. No fucking way. Her lips parted slightly as she stared at me from upstairs. I knew that face. Knew those eyes. Knew the sound she made when I pinned her to the bed nine months ago at that graduation party before I stopped everything. Elowen. The shy girl who saw me jerking off some steam. The girl I never expected to see again. Fate is a bastard. I swept my eyes across her body again. Her face lost all colour. Mine probably did too. Beside me, Caspian smiled proudly. “Zephyr,” he said. “Meet my daughter.” He turned to the girl. “Elowen, meet your new stepbrother.” The cigarette taste turned bitter in my mouth. Elowen Vale looked at me like she had just seen a ghost, and judging from the horror in her eyes— she remembered me too. I smirked. This was going to be a fucking fun summer.Elowen I woke up to a series of sharp, metallic bangs echoing down the corridor. Rubbing my eyes with the back of my hand, I tried to decipher where on earth the commotion was coming from. I turned my head, squinting through the dim morning light at the digital clock resting on my nightstand. 6:02 AM. Oh, God. I groaned, sinking my face straight back into my pillow. I usually didn't wake up until seven. Couldn't Zephyr let me have just one single hour of peace? My eyes snapped open again as my ears caught the lack of giggling, high heels, or muffled music. This wasn't his usual loud routine when he dragged girls back from a bar. The noise was coming directly from the kitchen. What is that guy up to? I wondered, my chest tightening. I didn't want to care. After the explosive slap I handed him last night and the fierce, bitter kiss that preceded it, I was still completely furious with him. But a few seconds later, a strong, acrid aroma of burnt food wafted beneath my bed
Divina"Not yet," I replied, my hands trembling slightly as I gripped the edge of the sofa. "Why are you here?" "You didn't sound like you were paying a damn bit of attention to me on the phone," Zephyr growled, dragging a hand through his dark, messy hair. "So I had no choice but to rush back." "If you won't give me a single valid reason why you want me to stay away from Derrick, how do you expect me to listen to a word you say?" I demanded, taking a sharp step toward him. He shoved both hands through his hair in pure, suffocating frustration, letting out a sharp breath. Ding-dong. The chime echoed loudly through the living room. Before I could even move a muscle, Zephyr practically leaped across the hardwood, beating me to the entry and yanking the front door open. Derrick stood on the porch, holding my denim jacket in one hand. The instant his eyes locked onto Zephyr, the color completely drained from his face. "What are you doing here? She explicitly told me you weren't with
Elowen We were back in the apartment, and the familiar quiet of our place felt like a breath of fresh air after the heavy, suffocating air of the Knox family mansion. Thankfully, I had nowhere to go so early that evening, I’d curled up on the living room couch with a paperback book, finally relaxing into the calm. Hearing footsteps on the stairs, I looked up as Zephyr walked downstairs. Instinctively before I could even stop my actions, my spine straightened, and my hands rushed to fix my wrinkled sweater and smooth down my jeans. Before I even turned to face him, the warm scent of his woodsy cologne drifted across the living room—a subtle, hit of cedar, smoke and spice that instantly sent my heart into a nervous rhythm. When I finally peeked at him, my breath hitched in my throat. He wore dark, slim-fitting trousers and a deep maroon button-down shirt with the sleeves carelessly rolled up to his forearms. His dark hair was styled into a messy, effortless look that somehow
Elowen By the time I finally woke up the next morning, the house was eerily silent. Mirabelle and my father had already packed up and left for an overnight trip across the state. I found a short note written in my father's neat handwriting resting on the marble kitchen island: > Mirabelle surprised me early this morning with a last-minute getaway for my birthday. She already had the bags packed before I even woke up! I didn't want to disturb your sleep. We'll be back late Tuesday evening. There's plenty of food in the fridge for you and Zephyr. Call me if you need anything. Love you, baby. > How ridiculously convenient. I was certain Mirabelle had orchestrated the entire sudden trip just to avoid facing the wreckage of what had happened last night. Not that she cared. Irritation flaring inside me, I picked up my phone and immediately typed out a reply: Me: Have a nice trip, but the second you get back, we need to have a real talk about what’s going on between mother and son
ElowenI waited all morning and afternoon for Zephyr, but he never came home. The silence inside the estate stretched long and suffocating. As the hours bled into evening, a heavy, knotting dread settled deep in my stomach, making it impossible to focus on anything. Sleep was a distant, unreachable memory. Finally, right around midnight, the faint sound of heavy, uneven footsteps echoed down the grand corridor. A second later, the brass doorknob to Zephyr’s room clicked and slowly turned. At least he was home. I sighed. Not even a minute passed before I heard his door slam wide open against the wall with a thunderous crash. "What the fuck, Zephyr? You reek of alcohol," Mirabelle’s harsh, sharp voice barked down the hall. My heart shot straight into my throat. I threw my blankets aside, sprang out of bed, and pressed my ear firmly against my room door. "Hey, mama..." Zephyr’s voice slurred heavily, raspy and thick with liquor. "Don't dare call me that! Ha, you just continue t
Elowen What Zephyr had just said threw me into horrendous confusion... The question still remained: what had actually happened back there? And why, all of a sudden, was Zephyr acting all protective? I looked up at his face, searching the harsh, unyielding lines of his profile. He didn't turn to meet my gaze. The heavy muscles in his jaw ticked steadily, his knuckles scraped and stained dark, and his broad chest rose and fell in jagged hitches like he was still in for another round of fights. The violent energy radiating off his body was practically humming in the small space between us. I folded my arms tightly across my chest and shifted away from him, pressing myself against the far passenger door. My gaze left his rigid posture and stared out the window, watching the blur of streetlights streak through the dark glass. The entire way back, we said nothing to each other. The silence inside the cab was deafening, suffocating, and thick with questions I was too terrified—or too p
Elowen"I don't do virgins, blondie." It had been nine solid months since that night, and yet the embarrassment still lingered heavily in my chest whenever I remembered the events that occurred. “I want to hold another party, in celebration of you getting into Whitmore College!” Isa shrieked thr
ElowenI didn’t even have the luxury to react before his hot mouth came down on mine. My eyes widened. How did things get to this point? In the next second, my back was pressed against the cold wall as his tall, muscular frame trapped me.I tried to push him away, but his grip on my neck tightened.
ElowenThe stupid thing was that I could still hear the annoying sound of his laughter five minutes later. In my head.I pushed through a crowd of dancing people and headed straight for the kitchen. My face was still burning. No. Burning wasn’t the right word. I was mortified. I grabbed the first
There are exactly three things a girl expects to find when she accidentally opens the wrong bedroom door at a graduation party. A sleeping drunk. A couple making out. Or a bathroom. What she does not expect to find is a half-dressed stranger staring back at her after she’s interrupted his m
