Kehlani

It's been two weeks since that bastard left me. Yet, my heart still aches like it was just yesterday. I cried all through fourteen days. Beyond bruised and almost depressed. Now t

As I trudged down the school's hallway like a depressed capybara, flashback triggers. My jaw fell, seeing Elliot kissing Maddie openly. I swallowed bitterly and I felt completely angry. It was as though a sword pierced through my flesh, digging into my bones.

“Hey, Kehlani.”

I blinked and Olive jogged towards me, slanting her arms over my shoulders. “What's up?”

I didn't say anything. Her eyes read the direction of mine and when she observed it, she hissed.

“Oh, no. Girl.” She pushed me so we walked further. “Avert your eyes. Don't look at him. He's a loser and he lost a beautiful girl like you.”

I chuckled nervously. “I know.” A soft sigh escaped my lips.

“So, how are you?”

I forced a smile. “Totally fine. Absolutely fine. I was ditched in front of everyone and secondly, I still haven't submitted my application for the scholarship program.”

“Oh, tell me you're being sarcastic.” She rolled her eyes. “Hold on, hope you know the deadline for that is today.”

She pointed to the notice board and I gasped, clutching my chest. “Oh gracious god! When?”

“I thought you said–”

“Fuck.” I cursed and opened my locker to get my document. “I need to rush to the boardroom immediately.” I panicked and my heart raced as I breathed rapidly. How could I forget about this? “See you later, olive.”

“Okay!” She yelled back.

Two weeks ago, I'd already written and set the application documents for the 4th LensArt photography scholarship program. It was a full ride scholarship to a top art program, cash and gift prize and a feature in a prominent art magazine sponsored by the casper family for students of Samara Hills High. I promised myself I'd try to win this year but since the humiliation. I lost myself and forgot about it. Even when the document had been in my school locker. Photography is my passion that's why I was in the school's shutter club. Plus, I got the chance to stay on the rink to snap Elliot adding up to the school's magazine.

“Oh my…” I breathe in capital letters as I ascend the stairs of the admin building. Passed the rows of faculty offices, walked to the boardroom and knocked. Yup, the assigned place to submit it.

“Come in.”

I heard a faint voice and I pushed the door open, catching my breath. At the extreme end of the board table, sat a guy there. No staff.

I squinted my eyes till I realized it was Trevor Casper.

“How may I help you?” He raised a brow, taking his headphones off.

“Uhh…” I walked closer. Why's he even here? Oh I forgot. Trevor is the school's god of hockey….or should I say Elliot's number one competitor, rival team too. His bloody rich parents are the sponsors behind the scholarship that's why he was almost untouchable.

“Speak up?” He tilted his head, waiting for my response.

“Of course.” My hands are clammy and I'm nervous now. I tripped when I met his eyes again.

“Sorry.” I don't know why I'm apologizing. The document falls from my shaky hands. Get your shit together Kehlani. I scolded myself.

“Actually, I'm here to submit my application form for the LensArt pro–”

“Closed.”

He shuts me off, gripping a cigarette between his fingers and puffs.

“What?” I froze.

Smoke curls from his lips and I'm forced to feel annoyed. He smirks. “You're late, Kehlani.”

He knows my name? Of course. He's literally your classmate.

“What do you mean?” My heart cuts for a second and I'm blinking in disbelief, hysterically.

His sleepy eyes casted a spell for me to drown in them. I don't know why, but Trevor was effortlessly charming. The gum he chewed slowly accentuated his sharp jawline.

“What I'm saying is, I can't take that because the deadline was this morning.”

My lips trembled. “That's not a problem. The deadline's today which means I still have a chance to give you.”

“I'm sorry sweetheart. The deadline was an hour ago.”

I scoffed. “I'm not your sweetheart.”

“Okay, Bitter heart.” He shrugged, acting so non chalant. How dare he?

“Well, aren't there any teachers I can lay this complaint to?” I crossed my arm, tapping my foot.

He laughed. “I'm in charge here. Rules are rules. Teachers ain't got nothing on me.”

Tears had gathered around my eyes. “But this isn't fair. Why can't you just take this. After all, you're a student like me. Can't you be considerate?” I pleaded. Is it natural for hockey players to always be harsh?

The proud asshole wasn't even listening. He sprawled his hands over the chairs, watching me like I entertained him.

“Sorry.” He says flatly.

I felt a lump in my throat. It burned but I swallowed and rubbed my hands. Trevor is so full of himself, the way he talks, the smoke he revealed says it all. No wonder his reputation in school is negative despite his parents' relationship with the school. He's the goalie with a criminal record. Everyone knows. I slumped my shoulders in resignation and walked away. This time, tears had blurred my vision and I almost fell, cascading the stairs. I ran to the restroom in the class building and screamed.

“I hate this stupid world!” My fingers dug into the scalp of my hair and I sobbed.

I'm always unlucky. Now my chance of getting those special benefits and spotlight is gone again. The bathroom door swung open and I wiped my tears immediately, preparing to leave but my stomach clenched when Maddie strolled in. Her make-up was intact plus she was clutching a hockey stick and pad.

“If it isn't the…disgraced photographer.” She smiles sweetly but I didn't let her words get to me.

“What do you want?”

“Why? Is it bad to talk to you?” She covers her mouth, suppressing a laugh and then begins to wash her hands.

“You know what, Kehlani?” She turned off the faucet. “I deserve Elliot big time.” Her hands are swinging in an attempt to dry her wet hands but purposely rain water on my face..

“Oops. Sorry.” She smirked, thrusting her chest. “You should have seen Elliot on Ice today. “ She holds the stick like she wants to strike. “He was amazing. Totally crushing it.”

“Enough Maddie.” My teeth grit as I stare at her in sheer irritability. “You're just Elliot's leech.”

“Oh, shut up. At least I'm not crying and depressed over a guy.

I sighed and walked away immediately, but she trailed behind me. I walked fast. She increased her pace.

“What is it you want from me?” I stopped abruptly and she did.

“Talented fool.” She whispers and I feel a surge of anger run through my veins.. I gripped her neck tight and slammed her into the locker.

“Hey!”

I turned to see Elliot, scurrying with rage.

“What the fuck?!” His eyes were full of rage and his veins popped out. Wow, he must really care for his new girlfriend.

“Oww.” Maddie's fake wails burst through the hallway and suddenly, Elliot pushed me violently to the floor, I stood up and he raised his hand to ... .hit me?

But his hands got caught in the air.

“Don't–you–dare–hit–her.”

I shuddered while I realized who saved me. Trevor. He's standing face to face with Elliot, gripping his hands with pressure, jaws clenched and brows furrowed.

“Stay out of this, Trevor.” He warned.

Trevor's eyes didn't leave Elliot.

“Back….off…”

Trevor the criminal outlaw goalie and Elliot, Ace player.

Two rivals locked horns.

Kehlani “Oh.” I chuckled nervously. A man appeared from the clothing rack. Young and handsome. Messy blonde hair and on a white sleeves with flared jeans. Damn. He's so cute. His anger vanished from his face as if someone had flipped a switch, then he looked between mason and I. “Whoa, whoa, whoa. Who do we have here? A model?” He asked in surprise. Mason sighed. “There it is. Theo being Theo.”“Oh, please.” Theo ignored him completely and turned to me. “Hi.” I said so it wouldn't be awkward. His gaze remained fixed on me and he placed his hands over his chest. “She's beautiful. She looks like art herself.”I looked away to stop blushing. Mason sighed. “For the love of—” Theo finally turned to him. “Mason, the great man himself.”They both shook hands. “How's business?” Mason asked.“Fantastic, chaotic, expensive and stressful.” He smiled. “But Theo Dave gets it handled all the time.” He smiled proud of himself. “Who have you brought here? Is she modeling?” He asked again. “Th

  • Rules We Break   The list

Kehlani I woke up happy tonight. Today's going to go well. Day two out of three weeks and I think I might be getting what I want on time. I said a few prayers and used the bathroom. When I was done, I ate cereal and dressed up. No classes today. What a big damn relief. Just meeting with Mason. I packed my hair into a tight ponytail, then wore a tank top and shorts, with a jacket. Now it's a few minutes past ten. Let's go. I drove for about twenty minutes before my navigation finally announced I'd arrived. I pulled up in the visitor parking lot. My mouth fell open when I looked up. “Wow.” The building is big. Towered over everything around it. Modern architecture with sleek steel and glass. In fact, the entire building looked like what a billionaire would own. This is Mason Reed's office? Or he just rented a studio space here? Well, whatever it is, I know he'd get me a collaborator in less than a second. Jeez. The large digital screen covered part of the exterior, displaying adverti

Kehlani “No, Anthony. I can't sleep with you. Why would you want that?”“Because you want something from me.” He shrugged. I covered my lips with my hands still reeling from shock. At this point, I don't have an appetite for my meal anymore. “We are both benefiting, and you're asking for sex?” I gritted my teeth. He reached out for my hands and I pulled away. “Stop.” “Stop? No, you stop. This is our tenth date. You don't want to be my girlfriend, so, how about we just keep fucking each other.”“No. I'm not doing that either.”“I like you.”“I'm turning down what you asked for. This is bullshit. It's not even worth it.” I scoffed. “Fine. Then let's just sex normally.”“Huh?”“Forget about the condition since you think it's not worth it. Then do it out of your own free mind.” He stared, still smiling like the fool he is. I just looked at him with a disgusted face. He adjusted his glasses. All along I thought he was a nerd and a cute guy with knowledge of science and all but turns o

Kehlani I rolled my eyes as he walked in. Flowers on his hands. The moment he sighted me, he waved and started heading towards me. A smile spread across his lips as he dragged the empty chair backwards. “There she is….as pretty as dandelions. No, rose.” He chuckled. “You're late.” I smiled politely. “Just ten minutes. You're as pretty as a rose flower.”“Is that so?” I raised a brow. “Yes. Well, no.” He handed the flowers to me. “Not rose, because it reminds me of the rose girls use on their vagina.” He burst into laughter and I couldn't help but contort my face, finding him very silly. Anthony is a weirdo. “Whatever.” I grabbed the flowers. “They smell nice.” I dropped it on the floor. “Um, what would you like to eat? Although I see you have a milkshake.” He dragged his hands through his dyed red hair which suited him very well. He's wearing fashionable glasses, black coat and white shirt with dark pants and converse. Not bad. “Oh. The milkshake. Actually, I'm not drinking it

  • Rules We Break   Day in my life

KehlaniThe next professor had stepped into class. He was busy talking to some brilliant kids that always stayed in the front seat. Not me, I preferred the middle. At least this course is better than the last one. I loved photography courses. They were interesting and fun to do. Half the class was murmuring. I had gotten into that second one. I adjusted the strap of my camera bag and sank lower into my seat. The lecture room smelt like coffee, colors, chemicals and paint. Around me, some students were editing videos, scrolling through social media while waiting for the professor to talk. I sighed, waiting. “So.” Professor Nathan began. “Good morning class.”“Good morning professor.” We said in unison and conversations died down. Just Silence. “I bet you all are wondering what this is about. You know this course deals with practical and outside work rather than writing objectives or theory. Your test would begin, followed by exams which are for the rest of the semesters.”The Project

  • Rules We Break   Work and all

Kehlani 3 years later. My alarm rang like ten times. Each alarm was a disturbance to my ears. I dismissed the first one till it got to the tenth one. I'm still having my beauty sleep and I'm so fucking tired to get up but something made me jolt up immediately. “I'm late for classes!” I groaned and yawned, checked the time and it's past 9. Oh, hell no. My apartment was messy with papers all over. That was me yesterday trying to work on a project. Universities and project work. Damn. I got up and walked to the bathroom, brushed and showered. I wore a short dress and grabbed a few school materials in my little hand bag. I didn't bother to stay in the school environment. Simply because I didn't want a roommate. So I'm just staying at an apartment. It's very nice. I walked out of my room and got down. “My car keys.” I fumbled through my bag. “Oh shit.” I forgot it up there. I kicked in frustration and went back up again. Thank goodness there's no traffic today. Sometimes I had to tak

Kehlani Trevor had parked at his mansion. The huge black gates fled open and he glided in. I try not to act surprised but goddamn, his home was a masterpiece out of a movie. KehlaniI arranged every piece of clothes in my wardrobe. In fact some couldn't contain so I got rid of the old ones which were worn off. I smiled, admiring the change. Olive would be surprised.
