Kehlani

It's been two weeks since that bastard left me. Yet, my heart still aches like it was just yesterday. I cried all through fourteen days. Beyond bruised and almost depressed. Now t

As I trudged down the school's hallway like a depressed capybara, flashback triggers. My jaw fell, seeing Elliot kissing Maddie openly. I swallowed bitterly and I felt completely angry. It was as though a sword pierced through my flesh, digging into my bones.

“Hey, Kehlani.”

I blinked and Olive jogged towards me, slanting her arms over my shoulders. “What's up?”

I didn't say anything. Her eyes read the direction of mine and when she observed it, she hissed.

“Oh, no. Girl.” She pushed me so we walked further. “Avert your eyes. Don't look at him. He's a loser and he lost a beautiful girl like you.”

I chuckled nervously. “I know.” A soft sigh escaped my lips.

“So, how are you?”

I forced a smile. “Totally fine. Absolutely fine. I was ditched in front of everyone and secondly, I still haven't submitted my application for the scholarship program.”

“Oh, tell me you're being sarcastic.” She rolled her eyes. “Hold on, hope you know the deadline for that is today.”

She pointed to the notice board and I gasped, clutching my chest. “Oh gracious god! When?”

“I thought you said–”

“Fuck.” I cursed and opened my locker to get my document. “I need to rush to the boardroom immediately.” I panicked and my heart raced as I breathed rapidly. How could I forget about this? “See you later, olive.”

“Okay!” She yelled back.

Two weeks ago, I'd already written and set the application documents for the 4th LensArt photography scholarship program. It was a full ride scholarship to a top art program, cash and gift prize and a feature in a prominent art magazine sponsored by the casper family for students of Samara Hills High. I promised myself I'd try to win this year but since the humiliation. I lost myself and forgot about it. Even when the document had been in my school locker. Photography is my passion that's why I was in the school's shutter club. Plus, I got the chance to stay on the rink to snap Elliot adding up to the school's magazine.

“Oh my…” I breathe in capital letters as I ascend the stairs of the admin building. Passed the rows of faculty offices, walked to the boardroom and knocked. Yup, the assigned place to submit it.

“Come in.”

I heard a faint voice and I pushed the door open, catching my breath. At the extreme end of the board table, sat a guy there. No staff.

I squinted my eyes till I realized it was Trevor Casper.

“How may I help you?” He raised a brow, taking his headphones off.

“Uhh…” I walked closer. Why's he even here? Oh I forgot. Trevor is the school's god of hockey….or should I say Elliot's number one competitor, rival team too. His bloody rich parents are the sponsors behind the scholarship that's why he was almost untouchable.

“Speak up?” He tilted his head, waiting for my response.

“Of course.” My hands are clammy and I'm nervous now. I tripped when I met his eyes again.

“Sorry.” I don't know why I'm apologizing. The document falls from my shaky hands. Get your shit together Kehlani. I scolded myself.

“Actually, I'm here to submit my application form for the LensArt pro–”

“Closed.”

He shuts me off, gripping a cigarette between his fingers and puffs.

“What?” I froze.

Smoke curls from his lips and I'm forced to feel annoyed. He smirks. “You're late, Kehlani.”

He knows my name? Of course. He's literally your classmate.

“What do you mean?” My heart cuts for a second and I'm blinking in disbelief, hysterically.

His sleepy eyes casted a spell for me to drown in them. I don't know why, but Trevor was effortlessly charming. The gum he chewed slowly accentuated his sharp jawline.

“What I'm saying is, I can't take that because the deadline was this morning.”

My lips trembled. “That's not a problem. The deadline's today which means I still have a chance to give you.”

“I'm sorry sweetheart. The deadline was an hour ago.”

I scoffed. “I'm not your sweetheart.”

“Okay, Bitter heart.” He shrugged, acting so non chalant. How dare he?

“Well, aren't there any teachers I can lay this complaint to?” I crossed my arm, tapping my foot.

He laughed. “I'm in charge here. Rules are rules. Teachers ain't got nothing on me.”

Tears had gathered around my eyes. “But this isn't fair. Why can't you just take this. After all, you're a student like me. Can't you be considerate?” I pleaded. Is it natural for hockey players to always be harsh?

The proud asshole wasn't even listening. He sprawled his hands over the chairs, watching me like I entertained him.

“Sorry.” He says flatly.

I felt a lump in my throat. It burned but I swallowed and rubbed my hands. Trevor is so full of himself, the way he talks, the smoke he revealed says it all. No wonder his reputation in school is negative despite his parents' relationship with the school. He's the goalie with a criminal record. Everyone knows. I slumped my shoulders in resignation and walked away. This time, tears had blurred my vision and I almost fell, cascading the stairs. I ran to the restroom in the class building and screamed.

“I hate this stupid world!” My fingers dug into the scalp of my hair and I sobbed.

I'm always unlucky. Now my chance of getting those special benefits and spotlight is gone again. The bathroom door swung open and I wiped my tears immediately, preparing to leave but my stomach clenched when Maddie strolled in. Her make-up was intact plus she was clutching a hockey stick and pad.

“If it isn't the…disgraced photographer.” She smiles sweetly but I didn't let her words get to me.

“What do you want?”

“Why? Is it bad to talk to you?” She covers her mouth, suppressing a laugh and then begins to wash her hands.

“You know what, Kehlani?” She turned off the faucet. “I deserve Elliot big time.” Her hands are swinging in an attempt to dry her wet hands but purposely rain water on my face..

“Oops. Sorry.” She smirked, thrusting her chest. “You should have seen Elliot on Ice today. “ She holds the stick like she wants to strike. “He was amazing. Totally crushing it.”

“Enough Maddie.” My teeth grit as I stare at her in sheer irritability. “You're just Elliot's leech.”

“Oh, shut up. At least I'm not crying and depressed over a guy.

I sighed and walked away immediately, but she trailed behind me. I walked fast. She increased her pace.

“What is it you want from me?” I stopped abruptly and she did.

“Talented fool.” She whispers and I feel a surge of anger run through my veins.. I gripped her neck tight and slammed her into the locker.

“Hey!”

I turned to see Elliot, scurrying with rage.

“What the fuck?!” His eyes were full of rage and his veins popped out. Wow, he must really care for his new girlfriend.

“Oww.” Maddie's fake wails burst through the hallway and suddenly, Elliot pushed me violently to the floor, I stood up and he raised his hand to ... .hit me?

But his hands got caught in the air.

“Don't–you–dare–hit–her.”

I shuddered while I realized who saved me. Trevor. He's standing face to face with Elliot, gripping his hands with pressure, jaws clenched and brows furrowed.

“Stay out of this, Trevor.” He warned.

Trevor's eyes didn't leave Elliot.

“Back….off…”

Trevor the criminal outlaw goalie and Elliot, Ace player.

Two rivals locked horns.

  • Rules We Break   I'm the most useless girlfriend ever

KehlaniMusic thumped low from behind his door. His sweatpants hung low with a towel around his neck. His hair is damp, obvious that he just stepped out of the damp. I gulp. Nervous. He's smirking. Thinking I must be falling for him and his athletic build but I didn't. I wasn't. Not anymore. All these were just pretense. My arms cross over my chest. He leaned on the doorframe, eyes scanning me from head to toe. “You're late.” He says. “Whatever.” “Why are you dressed like that?”“Like what?” I looked down. “Next time, wear something sexy.”“Would you let me in already?” I disturbed and he looked at me for a second before stepping back, opening the door wide enough. The room smells nice. Blue lights are on. All the curtains rolled down. The lights from the playstation glowed casting a white and purple light over the room. It's cold here. There's a poster of the vipers team but a bold coloured writing stretched on it saying, losers. Dick heads. Jeez. Elliot was so weird. I'm stand

  • Rules We Break   Brave but stupid

Kehlani My heart raced as I leaned against the cold door. The sound of shoes moving in, oh, jeez. Putting myself in a situation like this because of Elliot is just so stupid. I shouldn't have let him push me in, but it happened so fast. But the voice I heard made my heart thump hard. I'm sure it was. It was Trevor, talking to Elliot. I don't know what they were saying but I heard it. I looked down, bending hard. Trevor's red and white sneakers. Then Elliot's shoes too. I don't know why they were talking, they never get along too well. Breathe. Don't breathe. I'm going to be so dead if he decides to open the door. What if he does? What if he wants to pee or something. If he sees me in here, every piece of this shit would be totally blown off. The fluorescent lights buzzed above me. Beads of sweat formed on my head, dropping to my neck. The only thing I smell is disinfectant and fear. Please leave. Please leave. Please leave. I started praying. But when I bent down to inspect again,

  • Rules We Break   Hiding behind doors

Kehlani The next morning, Trevor had come to pick me from home. His head popped out of the window as he waved at me. I smiled, happy, closing the door. Next thing, he got out of the car, walked closer and kissed me sweetly. I giggled, trying to cover my face. “What?” He laughed, the smell of his cologne was so nice. “Don't look at me that way. I'm shy.” I pout. “Well, don't be. I'm your real boyfriend now. Be free.” He linked my fingers in his and walked me to the car, opening the door and I slid in.“Thank you, gentleman.” “Welcome. My lady.”I'm smiling so hard my cheeks hurt. I never thought we would get here. We didn't just break the rules, we destroyed the rules. The car glided freely across the street, we were getting closer to Brooklyn high. One hand on the steering and the other holding and brushing my knuckles. I smiled again, the first time he's doing this by the way. “You've been grinning so hard.” He muttered. Eyes still on the road. “And you're stealing glances at m

  • Rules We Break   I'm so sorry, Trevor

Kehlani “Well, I hate to burst your bubble, but you can't be here. What if Trevor….”“I know he isn't here.” He dropped the bowl, taking a step closer. Phase two of my plan wasn't supposed to be like this. He keeps on doing unexpected things. I pressed my lips together, lowering my eyebrows. He was making me so mad. Smiling like I was in the middle for his silly game. “Next time, don't do that.” I curled my lips. “Imagine if I fainted from the shock.”His hands dropped on my shoulders and I rolled my eyes. “I'm serious. What if something happened? You're acting like a burglar. It doesn't make sense.”“Why?” He chuckled. “I thought you said you love me. You should be happy and accommodate me whenever you see me, not judge me by my means of entrance.” He frowned, still placing his hands around my waist. “Yes. I know.” I bit my lips, regretting why my plan had to turn this way. “Look, what I'm saying is…I haven't broken up with Trevor. So he doesn't know we're together, yet.”He relea

  • Rules We Break   Trying to pretend

KehlaniHe froze. “You what?” his eyes narrowed, tilting his head to be sure if I just meant what I said. I took a deep breath, looking back again. My nerves crawled. “I know this sounds crazy and all that…but.” my lips start trembling. Then, he looked at his phone, pressed something and focused back at me. “I can't stop thinking about you. I love you. I can't deny my feelings anymore. I still love you.”He steps closer. “You…you're still in love with me?”I nod, trying to be certain and sounding as true as possible. “Yes.”“What about Trevor?”I grabbed his hands. Looking deep into his eyes. “Forget about him. I'm just using him as a placeholder. I know you hurt me then but I thought about what you said, that everyone deserves a second chance and I wanna give that to you. I want us back again. I miss us. Since when Trevor started dating me, I couldn't help but think about you all the time. I didn't stop loving you. Couldn't get you out of my head.”My throat closed. This was hard.

  • Rules We Break   Most crazy to do this

Kehlani Everyone froze. The patio dropped dead silent. Did the words just slip out of Elliot's mouth? Did he just confess? Everyone's mouth is dropped open, looking at Trevor and Elliot. Suddenly, Elliot starts laughing. “You guys…. I'm sorry, that was just a joke.” He held his stomach, trying to cover his smile. “I swear, I'm kidding.”“Dude, don't joke with stuff like that.” A guy says. “That's not funny, Elliot.” Maddie sneered and everyone started pouring insults at him, dropping the matter already. I was mad Trevor didn't do anything. Because it doesn't even seem like a joke at all. Trevor nudges me. “Let's leave.”As we stood up, Elliot did the same. “Hey, I swear, it was a joke. You're not mad are you?” He says, trying to stop Trevor. Trevor gives him a flat stare. “I could have punched you and thrown your body over this patio. But I'm really not in the mood. Enough with expensive jokes, man.” he grabbed my arms and we left. We cascaded the stairs and I had to say somethi

Kehlani I lunged at Maddie. Tackling her to the floor. We rolled to the floor, hitting, slapping and swinging. It had turned into a mind blowing heated fight between us in the midst of the whole girls. Girls were screaming, shouting, pretty sure recording, as well. Her fingers dug painfully into m

KehlaniI arranged every piece of clothes in my wardrobe. In fact some couldn't contain so I got rid of the old ones which were worn off. I smiled, admiring the change. Olive would be surprised. KehlaniIn no time, it was dinner time. I sat close to Trevor, while Darcy, his mom, was opposite. We were having mashed potatoes, shepherd's pie and fried chicken. “So, since when did you two start dating?” She asked eagerly. Trover just ate quietly, not ready for this conversation. “Two weeks a

  • Rules We Break   Hi, Trevor's Mom.

Kehlani Trevor had parked at his mansion. The huge black gates fled open and he glided in. I try not to act surprised but goddamn, his home was a masterpiece out of a movie. The first thing that caught my attention was the water fountain before the pretty surroundings. No wonder he didn't mind pay
