SHAWNA

“Please come over to my-"

Her panicked voice went off just as it came, it's almost like the phone was snatched from her or something. I tried to call the number back immediately but it was switched off.

There's something wrong with this, something is fishy. She sounded like she wanted to tell me something before the call ended.

“What's wrong? Who was that? Are you okay?" Liam asked me after I dropped the phone. I looked at him with a frown etched into my face.

"I don't know, a woman called just now saying she's the lawyer's wife. She was panicky and all and she said she needed my help with something before the call ended abruptly.” I told him.

"The lawyer who just died?” He asked and I nodded.

"This is serious, and the call ended abruptly? That sounds suspicious.” He frowned.

"Exactly, it sounded like the phone was yanked away from her before the call disconnected. Now she's unreachable.” I felt restless. Anything could be going on with her right now, or is this some kind of p

RICHARDThe cold stone slab had long lost its chill, but a different kind of cold settled in my bones as the last footsteps faded. I waited, just to be sure. Silence. Finally, I pushed myself up, my muscles stiff but my purpose clear. This was it. The final act.I walked towards the front of the prison, no more waiting, no more planning in the shadows. Just execution. Two officers were there, leaning against a desk, looking bored. They straightened up when they saw me."Richard, right?" one of them, a burly man with a thick mustache, asked. He had a slight tremor in his voice, a hint of nervousness he tried to hide."That's me," I said, my voice calm, almost too calm. "You received the… package?"The other officer, younger, with shifty eyes, nodded quickly. "Yes, sir. Just as you instructed. All accounted for." He gestured vaguely towards a large, nondescript bag on the floor. "More than enough, actually."I smiled, a genuine smile, though it probably looked unsettling. "Good. Excelle

PHOEBEThe police station felt colder than usual. The lights buzzed overhead, sterile and too bright, making everything feel more real than I wanted it to. Ramon stood beside me, his arms folded tightly across his chest, jaw clenched. Neither of us said a word as we waited. When the officer finally returned and led us down the hallway, the silence grew heavier."You don't have to see this if you don't want to," the officer said gently.Ramon didn’t even look at him. He just nodded, his steps steady. We entered the small room. The air smelled faintly of bleach and something else, distant and metallic. There, on the cold metal table, lay Richard. His skin was pale, almost grey. His face looked peaceful, too peaceful, and it sent a chill down my spine. The red splotches around his neck were stark and angry. His clothes, now torn, had been used to hang himself.I held my breath.Ramon didn’t speak. He just stared.I watched him carefully. His shoulders were stiff, but his eyes, they were

PHOEBEI opened the door to the hospital room and froze. There she was, Winnie, taller, thinner, but unmistakably alive. Her eyes widened, and a huge, broken smile spread across her face.“Winnie!” I whispered, my voice cracking. She stepped forward and dropped her bag at her feet. “Phoebe!” Her arms wrapped around me so tight I felt like I’d never breathe again.I clung to her like I was afraid she’d vanish. “You’re here. You’re really here.”She pulled back, her hands on my shoulders, tears streaming down her cheeks. “I am. I’m alive.”I stared at her face, worn, a little thinner, but it was Winnie. My Winnie. “I thought… I thought I had lost you forever.”“It wasn’t your fault,” she whispered, her voice gentle, grounding. “And I know you blamed yourself. But I’m here.”I stepped back slightly and searched her face. “Winnie… I’m so sorry I didn’t listen. I should’ve fought harder. I should’ve believed in you.”She shook her head. “You did what you could. You trusted me once. That wa

WINNIEI and Stephen sat on the boat’s deck, the wind tugging at my damp hair and the sea rocking gently below. Moonlight shimmered across the water. I’d waited for this moment for what felt like forever, and now that it was here... my heart pounded in my chest like a drum solo I couldn’t stop.“Nearly there,” the boat captain said, leaning over. “We hit the mainland in about an hour.”I nodded, my voice gone. I’d survived an accident that killed many. I’d been on a remote island for weeks. Seasickness nearly took me again. But now… home was close.“Dad,” I whispered to the waves. Tears stung my eyes. “I’m coming home.”And then there was Phoebe. I pictured her face when she saw me, still pale from being shot. Saw her expression, relief giving way to shock. Felt the ache in her arm. I hoped she was okay.My thoughts crashed into one another. It got dark. The sky became a blank canvas of navy. The boat slowed at a dock.“We’re here,” the captain announced.Stephen held my hands and we

PHOEBEI blinked up at the ceiling, wincing a little as pain shot through my shoulder.“Phoebe?” a soft voice said.I turned my head. Mom. Dad. Great Grandpa. All standing there, hovering, eyes wide with relief and exhaustion.“Hey,” I whispered. My voice sounded like sandpaper.“Oh my God,” Mom breathed and came to my side. “You’re awake. Thank God.”I tried to sit up, but she gently pressed my good shoulder down. “Don’t rush it.”“How long?” I asked.“Two days,” Dad said, stepping closer. “You gave us all a scare.”“I got shot, didn’t I?” I managed a weak smile.Dad nodded, face hard. “In the arm. Missed anything vital. You were lucky.”“Where’s… where’s Ramon?” I asked, eyes scanning the room. There was a pause. Then Ramon stepped out from behind Dad, eyes soft, a faint bruise under his jaw.“I’m here,” he said, voice low. “I didn’t leave. I wasn’t going to.”I felt my heart skip. “What happened?”“We got them,” he said. “The police came in time. The men who attacked us…they’re in

RAMONI had just pulled Phoebe behind me when she went still in my arms.“Phoebe!” I whispered, panic gripping my throat. Her weight sagged against me like a thread cut loose.I dropped to one knee, cradling her, my heart pounding like war drums. Her head lolled against my shoulder, her skin too pale, her lips trembling.“Stay with me…please,” I choked out, brushing the hair from her face. Her eyes fluttered once… then closed. And that was when I saw it, the blood soaking through the thin fabric of her sleeve. It spread quickly, dark and terrifying.“Medic!” I shouted, my voice echoing through the chaos. “She’s been hit!”Damien’s voice boomed from somewhere across the room. “Call an ambulance! Get help now!”The sound of sirens tore through the tension in the air. Red and blue lights danced across the walls, flashing through shattered glass and bullet holes. Doors burst open. Police poured into the room like a tide, uniformed, shouting, guns drawn.“Everyone get down! Drop your weapo
