SHAWNA

“Do you think he's still coming?" We've been waiting here for quite a while and it just seems the private investigator we're meant to meet here isn't coming again.

“Let's just wait for five more minutes, after that, we're gone," Liam said. He said this five minutes ago too, but this time around we're leaving if the man doesn't show up.

I sipped the drink before me, it's almost finished now since that's what I've been drinking since we got here.

I kept quiet and kept looking around the lonely cafe, it's one of the most low-key ones right now. It only gets filled up when it's weekend, morning, or evening. But it's at its best at this time of the day.

“He's here." Liam's voice brought me out of my thoughts, I looked in the direction he was looking to see a man dressed in a blue polo shirt and black trousers coming towards our table.

He got to us and sat down on the third chair beside us.

“I'm very sorry for coming late, something held me down outside, it would have been violent if

PHOEBEI had just gotten back to my seat, forcing a calm, practiced smile on my face, when I heard a soft voice behind me."Phoebe. Don’t move."I turned slightly, eyebrows raised. It was Stephen. His tone was so calm, so steady, it almost didn’t match the urgency in his eyes."What?" I whispered, barely moving my lips."There's a gun pointed at you," he said under his breath, gaze sweeping the crowd like he was just scanning for a friend.A chill raced down my spine.I laughed nervously because I knew. "Are you joking?"Stephen didn’t blink. "I'm not. I need you to stay exactly where you are. Don’t turn around. Don’t panic. Just breathe."My hands trembled. I tried to still them as I picked up my phone and opened a new message to Ramon.Stephen knows. He says there's a gun pointed at me. He’s going to neutralize the threat.Stephen leaned closer, his voice barely audible over the soft hum of conversation and music. “In thirty seconds, I’m going to move. Just keep talking to Winnie li

PHOEBEThe music drifted through the backyard like smoke, soft and sweet. My parents’ get-together was in full swing. Fairy lights hung in loops between the trees, casting a golden glow over the patio. People laughed, drank, and danced. For the first time in weeks, maybe months, I felt light again. Safe.I swirled my drink and smiled as Winnie skipped over to me, cheeks flushed."Having fun?" I asked.Winnie laughed, twirling the end of her braid. "Yeah. More than I expected to."I raised an eyebrow. "More than you expected? Why's that?"Her eyes darted across the yard. I followed her gaze and spotted Stephen leaning against the railing, sipping from a bottle of soda and watching the crowd with quiet amusement. I looked back at Winnie, who was now blushing furiously."Oh my god," I grinned. "You're crushing on him.""No, I'm not," she said too quickly."You so are! Your face is pinker than your dress."She groaned and covered her face with her hands. "This is so stupid. I’ve had a cru

RAMONI didn’t expect the rage to hit me so fast."You killed them," I said, my voice shaking, low and bitter. "You killed every single one of them just so you could fake your death?"Richard smiled like he was talking about the weather. Calm. Unbothered. "They helped me. But help only goes so far, nephew. They might get greedy. I couldn’t risk that."I stared at him, sick to my stomach. "You murdered them. Guards. Inmates. Innocent people. Just to stage your little vanishing act?"He tilted his head. "You think they were all innocent? You think the state hires saints to run prisons? Come on. Don’t be naïve."I clenched my fists so hard, I felt my nails pierce my skin. The heat inside me was almost unbearable. "You’re disgusting."He still didn’t flinch. "I did what I had to."I stepped forward. "Then why are you here? You think I’ll just stand here and do nothing? You think I won’t report you?"That was when he pulled the phone from his coat pocket and calmly turned the screen toward

RAMONThe phone call came just after sunrise.I was still in bed, the early light creeping through the curtains. My eyes burned from barely sleeping. The ringtone jolted me upright.“Mr. Ramon? This is Deputy Elkins. I'm calling from the station. There has been an incident at the prison. A fire.”I sat up slowly, my hands gripping the sheets like they were the only thing keeping me upright. The room felt colder somehow. “A fire? What kind of fire?”“An explosion, sir. It spread fast. Most of the facility is gone. All the inmates and guards they’re presumed dead.”I froze. My heart pounded against my ribs like it was trying to get out. I pressed the phone tighter to my ear, struggling to breathe. “You’re saying Richard is… gone?”The deputy hesitated. “We can’t confirm individual bodies, sir. The fire was extensive. But… there were no survivors. We’ll need you to come down and sign his death certificate.”I didn’t respond right away.Gone? My uncle… gone? After everything? The silence

RICHARDThe cold stone slab had long lost its chill, but a different kind of cold settled in my bones as the last footsteps faded. I waited, just to be sure. Silence. Finally, I pushed myself up, my muscles stiff but my purpose clear. This was it. The final act.I walked towards the front of the prison, no more waiting, no more planning in the shadows. Just execution. Two officers were there, leaning against a desk, looking bored. They straightened up when they saw me."Richard, right?" one of them, a burly man with a thick mustache, asked. He had a slight tremor in his voice, a hint of nervousness he tried to hide."That's me," I said, my voice calm, almost too calm. "You received the… package?"The other officer, younger, with shifty eyes, nodded quickly. "Yes, sir. Just as you instructed. All accounted for." He gestured vaguely towards a large, nondescript bag on the floor. "More than enough, actually."I smiled, a genuine smile, though it probably looked unsettling. "Good. Excelle

PHOEBEThe police station felt colder than usual. The lights buzzed overhead, sterile and too bright, making everything feel more real than I wanted it to. Ramon stood beside me, his arms folded tightly across his chest, jaw clenched. Neither of us said a word as we waited. When the officer finally returned and led us down the hallway, the silence grew heavier."You don't have to see this if you don't want to," the officer said gently.Ramon didn’t even look at him. He just nodded, his steps steady. We entered the small room. The air smelled faintly of bleach and something else, distant and metallic. There, on the cold metal table, lay Richard. His skin was pale, almost grey. His face looked peaceful, too peaceful, and it sent a chill down my spine. The red splotches around his neck were stark and angry. His clothes, now torn, had been used to hang himself.I held my breath.Ramon didn’t speak. He just stared.I watched him carefully. His shoulders were stiff, but his eyes, they were
