Chapter 1

Everyone in South Dania was convinced that my coming-of-age would also be my engagement ceremony with Daniel, the crown prince.

Under the moonlight, he laid the Moon Tiara on my head—the symbol of our alliance and betrothal.

The guests were cheering thunderously as they offered their blessing, already seeing visions of the future where the Alpha King and Luna Queen ruled over them.

Only I was aware of the coolness of the tiara as it pressed against my skin, and it had nothing to do with blood.

After all, the golden spark of the mate bond no longer flared between us.

And he never Marked me.

“Susan."

He held my hand, his voice booming in the air. "After my coronation, we shall hold the grandest Marking ceremony in my kingdom, with the Moon Goddess witnessing our eternal mate bond."

That was when Blake, his Beta, arrived and used an ancient wavelength to communicate without words.

"Anna has been waiting for a while. She's getting anxious."

Daniel was just passing me a glass of moonshine, and the air around flickered with adoration and impatience.

He replied to Blake in the same way. "She always knows when I need to unwind. Watch out—don't let Susan notice."

They were convinced they wouldn't get caught, unaware that my wolf soul was special—it heard everything.

Anna.

Relax.

These were simple words that were also icy needles that pierced the balloon of affectionate fantasy he had conjured around me.

As it turned out, Daniel kept delaying our Marking and insisted it would be 'soon' to appease another she-wolf.

My fingers clenched around my glass, but I didn't feel the pain of betrayal, only the cool fury that was spreading throughout my bloodstream.

We weren't bonded as mates, so he could do whatever he liked.

That was when Daniel pressed toward me, his gaze concerned as he breathed into my ear, "What's wrong? Is the hall getting too noisy for you?"

"No." I put down my glass as I avoided his touch. "Just a little cabin fever. I'd like some fresh air."

Even as I turned, I could hear the other nobles nodding and clamoring in approval.

"Susan is the best—she already carries the splendor of a Luna Queen."

"Daniel keeps hovering around her. That's how much he cares about her."

Hovering around me?

Cares about me?

I could laugh right then.

Nonetheless, I strode out to the balcony, letting the evening breeze cool my boiling blood.

It could well be a stroke of luck that I wasn't bound by a Mark—when I left, I wouldn't feel the agony of my own soul being ripped asunder.

If anything, the one who would be hurting wouldn't be me.

I quietly tapped into my mind link with Lulu, my bestie from my old pack.

"Everything's read. In three days, during the new moon, I will wipe out all traces of me and my connections to this place."

"Understood. But be careful—Daniel has been increasing patrols to the east, allegedly to fend off skirmishes by rogues."

"Don't worry about it."

I pulled out of the mind link, snorting.

The only reason Daniel would enforce security to the east was nothing more than a cover story for his trysts.

"Three more days…" I breathed silently to thin air, reinforcing my resolve to end this once and for all.

That was when I heard soft footsteps that stopped at the doorway.

"What are you doing here, spacing out all by yourself?" Daniel asked, his tone mild as ever.

Walking up to my side, he kept a polite distance as 'engaged couples' would.

He clearly heard my whisper but was trying to appear unconcerned.

I turned slightly, smiling faintly, shyly and hopefully as the future queen would. "Just thinking about the prayer to the Moon Goddess in three days."

That was the truth.

New moons were the moment when the Moon Goddess' power would wane, and it would be most suited for a grand farewell and a quiet escape.

Daniel chuckled in turn, turning away and looking up to the distant skies. "The Moon Goddess will protect you, Susan."

He sounded confident as if the Moon Goddess promised as much, never understanding that I was praying for a safe departure from this place.

"It's getting cold out here. Let's get inside," he said, the perfect gentleman as always.

I nodded, following him inside the dazzling banquet hall, filled with endless deception and anticipation.

The shadows behind us made it look like we were together, when there was actually an insurmountable distance between us.

Just like how our Mark would never be complete.

  • Running Under the New Moon   Chapter 10

Daniel went missing. After he was chased out of the Dark Moon Pack's sacred valley, there had been no concrete information on his whereabouts, despite the South Dania royal correspondent stating that the former prince retreated into seclusion due to health reasons. There were plenty of rumors. Some claimed to have spotted him venturing cursed icy plains of the north, seeking the Spring of Lost Memories and never returning.Others claimed he joined the mercenaries, boozing and fighting every day, his golden locks now a dirty yellow… And once he was drunk enough, he'd be howling my name at the moon. There were even some who claimed that he defected to our enemies, intent on rallying their forces and reclaiming the capital, but was stabbed in the back and subsequently ripped into pieces. There was no telling what was true, but one thing was for sure—the former crown prince who had once shone brilliantly was gone, along with his ambition, lies, and regret. As the kingdom eagerly di

  • Running Under the New Moon   Chapter 9

Daniel had really given up on whatever leverage and dignity he had left.He pawned off the jewelry left by his mother, fraternizing with the worst scum out there, and even offered ten years' worth of the northern regions' harvests just to get their hunting packs to help track me down.Like a rogue wolf on the hunt, he was sniffing everywhere, not resting as he tried to find any traces that could lead to me.Meanwhile, in the sacred valley of the Dark Moon Pack, I was at the altar, dressed in a silver gown, my long hair braided and adorned with moonstones.I seemed to sparkle against the sun, while Lyon stood beside me, his figure towering as he held my hand, our matching engagement rings glinting against the sun's glow.Lyon's voice was deep and strong, ringing throughout the valley as he swore, "I, Lyon, take Susan as my beloved Luna. My claws shall be her protection, my domain shall be her safe harbor—all my honor, loyalty and my very being is hers."Our packs cheered thunderou

However, any hope Daniel had left was snuffed when the doctor presented him with Anna's clean bill of health. On top of that, she only got pregnant two months ago—the time when his trysts with Anna grew frequent, while I became increasingly silent around him.He crumpled the paper in his hand and changed straight into Anna's chambers, his voice cold and flat. "Abort it."Anna was just stroking her own belly and her head jerked up in shock, all color draining from her face. "No… Daniel, you can't do this! It's your pup! Our flesh and blood!""Flesh and blood?! More like a culmination of lies!" Daniel bellowed, his eyes flaring with ice-cold disgust as he moved closer to her. "You lied to me, pretended to be poisoned to get my sympathy, and even tricked me into proposing to you! And now you're trying to tie me down with a bastard?!""I wasn't lying! I love you!" Anna burst into tears, lunging at him to grab his arm. "I didn't want to lose you, so I lied… But it's true! Just feel him

There was only a gloomy silence in the chambers aside from Anna's endless sobs, while Daniel stood there, staring at her belly.Pregnant?!He was taken aback, but he remembered that night when Anna cried in despair when the black marks appeared on her wrist—when she said she'd only survive three months. He believed her and was really guilty about it, and so agreed to propose to her, even letting her record a holograph of him doing it."You said… You were poisoned," he said dryly, his eyes studying her closely.Anna stopped crying right then, but averted her eyes and said meekly, "The doctor said… Pregnancy brings miracles…""Miracles?"Daniel's smile did not quite reach his eyes as he suddenly reached out and grabbed Anna's wrist, forcefully pulling up the sleeve.Underneath, her skin was perfectly fair and certainly had no blemishes, let alone black marks or bruising."Wow, what a miracle," Daniel growled coolly even as he released Anna's arm and turned to bark at the doorway

The search remained fruitless on the seventh day of my disappearance, while Daniel's eyes became even more bloodshot.Just then, Anna entered with a bowl of warm soup, gently coaxing him, "You need to rest, Daniel. Maybe Susan just wants to be alone for a while…""For a while?!" Daniel leaped up, wheeling on her as he rasped with a voice as grating as sandpaper. "She returned the ring that's supposed to be a token of our love! And you call that 'for a while'?!"Anna was stunned by the ferocity in his eyes but forced herself to move closer, holding his stiffened arm. "You still have me, and we can—"Daniel knocked her hand away irritably, his fingers inadvertently brushing against the dressing table and knocking into the link crystal I'd left on purpose. As an iota of his wolf soul flowed unwittingly into the link crystal, a projection suddenly sprang to life.It was a holograph of him, down on one knee as he proposed to Anna, the vine ring in that velvet box sparkling brightly.

  • Running Under the New Moon   Chapter 5

As I was no longer in Daniel's chambers in the dawn after, Anna was standing there, smiling sweetly and happily. "Now everyone knows that you proposed to me. That means your engagement with Susan is annulled, right?"Before Daniel could speak, the doors were opened with a bang as Blake rushed in to report, "Your Highness! Lady Susan is gone! All her personal effects are missing from her chambers, aside from a single link crystal by the windowsill!"Daniel's face dropped, and he sprang to his feet, bellowing, "Find her! Seal all exits and send out everyone we have!"At the same time, he charged into my chambers, where the clothes in my wardrobe were arranged neatly and the jewel box was undamaged.Only the casual clothes I brought from my pack were gone, while the link crystal I left sat on the windowsill, glinting coolly against the morning light. My scent and my presence was gone, as if I had disappeared into thin air.-The search went on for three days, but it was fruitless.
