POV: Matteo

"Repeat after me," the elder said, and I opened my mouth before my brain caught up with the words.

"I, Matteo Rocha, take this bond—"

My voice came out steadier than I felt. Good. Let it.

The great hall was packed shoulder to shoulder, every pack elder and council member and Callahan cousin twice removed crammed into seats that used to be my brother's to fill. Candlelight everywhere. Too much of it. I could feel the heat of it on my neck, could feel two hundred pairs of eyes doing the math on me — the spare, the understudy, the one who filed the correspondence while his brother learned to be Alpha-consort.

Rhys stood across from me, close enough that I had to tip my head back to hold his eyes.

I hated that I noticed him. Not the marriage. Not the hall, not the elder's droning voice. Him. The way he filled the space he stood in without needing to move. Broad through the shoulders in a way that made the ceremonial robes look like they belonged to him and not the other way around. Still, in the way a held breath is still.

He was devastating to look at, and I resented every second I spent confirming it.

"Rhys Callahan," the elder said, turning to him. "Do you accept this bond?"

"I accept," Rhys said.

Clean. Certain. The kind of voice that had never once had to ask permission for anything in its life.

Then he leaned in — close enough that his mouth was almost against my ear, close enough that anyone watching would call it tender.

"I will never see you as anything but a debt paid," he said. Quiet. Just for me. "Understand that now, so neither of us has to pretend later."

I didn't flinch. I want that on record. I didn't flinch, even though something in my chest folded in on itself like paper.

"Understood," I said back, just as quiet.

Two words. That was all I let myself give him.

The elder didn't hear it — she was already reaching for the ceremonial blade, murmuring the old words about blood and binding, and I watched Rhys's face do absolutely nothing while mine was doing everything.

I felt them then. The elders in the front row. Mira Thornwood, who'd never once in twenty-four years remembered my name at a council dinner, was watching me now like I was something rare.

"Such courage," she'd said to me an hour ago, hand pressed to her chest. "Stepping up like this. Saving both families."

Courage. That's what they were calling it. Nobody in that hall knew I hadn't been saving anyone. Nobody knew that somewhere underneath the grief for my brother, there'd been a second feeling I never said out loud — a hunger, ugly and immediate, for a room to finally look at me like I mattered.

I got my wish. I just hadn't read the fine print.

"Your hand," the elder said to Rhys, and held out the blade.

He took my wrist. His grip was careful — too careful, like he was handling something breakable he didn't particularly want to hold.

"This will only take a moment," he said, and for a second his voice wasn't performing for anyone. It was just talking to me, low, almost human.

"I know how it works," I said. "I've read the ceremony texts. I used to file them, remember?"

The corner of his mouth moved, just barely, before he caught it and flattened it back into nothing. "Right," he said. "Of course you have."

The blade was cold against my skin, and then it wasn't cold at all — it was fire, quick and clean, and I heard myself make a sound I hadn't given permission for.

Rhys's hand trembled.

I felt it before I understood it — a small, involuntary tremor running through the fingers wrapped around my wrist, right as the mark began to seal. I looked up at him fast, but his face had already smoothed back into nothing. Whatever that was, he'd buried it before I could name it.

The mark burned brighter than I expected. Brighter than what I remembered from the texts I used to file — a strange, sharp gold instead of the dull amber the old records described. It pulsed once against my skin like something alive, and I felt it settle somewhere under my sternum, somewhere I didn't have a word for.

Nobody commented on it. Not the elder, not the crowd, not Rhys. Maybe it was nothing. Maybe I was the only one who saw it flare that wrong, too-bright color before it faded into an ordinary mark like it was supposed to be.

I kept turning it over anyway, even as the elder lifted her hands and the whole hall rose to its feet around us.

"By blood and binding," she said, "I declare this bond sealed. Rhys Callahan. Matteo Rocha. Husbands, and Alpha and consort, before pack and council."

The hall erupted — applause, some cheering from the younger cousins, someone near the back letting out a sharp wolf-whistle that made a few elders tut in disapproval. All of it washed over me like noise from very far away.

Rhys's hand was still against mine. Still trembling, faint but there, a small betrayal his body hadn't gotten the memo to stop.

I looked up at him one more time before the elder could pull us apart for the next part of the ceremony — and for exactly one second, something moved behind his eyes that had no business being there.

He looked afraid.

Not annoyed. Not cold, not performing, not any of the careful nothing he'd worn since he first said I accept.

Afraid. Of me.

And then it was gone, tucked back behind that same unreadable stillness, like it had never happened at all.

POV: Matteo"This session is called to order," the elder said, her voice tight with exhaustion, dawn light spilling pale and gray through the chamber windows. "Beta Bane, you requested this hour. I trust you have good reason.""I do," Dave said, standing at the center of the floor, something in his posture different this morning, more deliberate, more final, like a man playing a card he'd been holding for years and had finally decided to spend."Before this council votes on tonight's leadership challenge," he said, "there is something you all deserve to know about the foundation this marriage was built on. Something far larger than Alpha Callahan's concealed memory.""Explain," the elder said.Dave turned toward the chamber doors and raised his hand. The doors opened.I felt the air leave the room before I understood why. A man stepped through the entrance, flanked by two of Dave's own household guard, and the entire chamber went utterly, impossibly silent.I knew that face. I had gri

  • Ruthless Amnesia    What He Meant By Again

‎POV: Rhys"Sit down," I said, closing the study door behind us, my hands unsteady in a way they hadn't been since the hospital bed. "Please. There's nothing left to protect by standing at the door like you're ready to leave."Matteo stood there anyway, arms crossed, exhaustion and fury both written plainly across his face after everything the council had put him through tonight. "Why now, Rhys. Why is it suddenly the moment for honesty, when an hour ago you still wouldn't look me in the eye and admit how long you'd known.""Because it doesn't cost me anything anymore," I said, and watched the words land, sharp and true, exactly as ugly as they sounded. "That's the honest answer. The council already knows. Dave already exposed it. There's nothing left for me to lose by finally telling you the truth, and that timing is its own kind of failure, and I know it."He didn't answer that. He just watched me, waiting, some of the fight draining out of his posture as exhaustion took its place.

  • Ruthless Amnesia    The Truth I Chose

POV: Matteo"Yes," I said. One word, and the entire chamber seemed to hold its breath around it."I knew," I said again, louder this time, steadier, because I'd decided somewhere in the space between the elder's question and my own answer that I wasn't going to soften this, wasn't going to perform the shame everyone in this room was clearly waiting to witness. "I've known for two weeks."Murmurs broke out immediately, sharp whispers rippling through the assembled council, but I kept my eyes fixed on the elder, refusing to look away, refusing to let this become something I endured rather than something I owned."You knew," the elder repeated, her voice carefully neutral, "and you said nothing. Not to this council. Not, it seems, even to your own husband directly.""That's correct.""Why," she asked, simply, the single word carrying the weight of everything the chamber wanted to understand.I felt Rhys go very still beside me, waiting, as uncertain of my answer as everyone else in the r

  • Ruthless Amnesia    The Council Floor

POV: Matteo"This session is called to order," the eldest councilwoman said, her voice carrying easily across the packed chamber, every seat filled, more faces than I'd ever seen crowded into that room at once. "On a matter of Alpha fitness."I sat beside Rhys at the front of the hall, my hands folded tight in my lap, the whole room feeling smaller and more dangerous than it had at our wedding two years ago. Rhys sat rigid beside me, his jaw set, every trace of the searching, gentle man from the hospital bed buried now beneath the same controlled stillness he'd worn the day I married him.Dave stood when the elder gestured for him to speak, calm, composed, his voice carrying the same easy warmth he'd used on me in his study weeks ago."I come before this council with information I wish I didn't have to share," he said, and the practiced regret in his voice made my skin crawl. "Information about our Alpha's recovery that concerns the fitness of his leadership, and the honesty of his ma

  • Ruthless Amnesia    The Council Is Called

POV: Matteo"A messenger's here for you," the household steward said, appearing in the doorway of the sitting room with a folded parchment held out in careful hands. "Marked urgent. Council seal."I set down the correspondence I'd been sorting and took it from him, my stomach already tightening before I'd broken the wax. Council seals didn't arrive urgent for small matters.I read it twice before the words fully landed. An emergency session has been called for tomorrow evening, addressing matters of Alpha fitness following recent medical circumstances. Attendance required of Alpha Callahan and consort."Fitness," I said aloud, my voice tight, the word sitting wrong and dangerous in my mouth. "Medical circumstances.""Is something wrong, my lord," the steward asked, hovering uncertainly."I don't know yet," I said, though a cold, sinking dread was already answering the question for me.I found Rhys in the study minutes later, the parchment still clutched in my hand, and the moment I st

  • Ruthless Amnesia    What Dave Knew

POV: Rhys"Walk me through the ambush again," I said, closing my study door behind Dave before he'd even fully settled into the chair across from my desk. "From the beginning. Every detail you remember.""Why," Dave said, an easy smile settling over his face, though something behind his eyes sharpened slightly at the request. "You've heard it a dozen times already.""Humor me," I said. "I'm still filling gaps. Some nights I remember pieces I didn't have before. I want to see if your account matches what's coming back to me."It wasn't entirely true. Nothing had come back to me from that night, not really, not in any way I could point to with certainty. But I'd been sitting alone in the archive too many nights now, my mother's letter burning a hole through everything I thought I understood about my own family, and somewhere in that quiet reckoning, an older instinct had started stirring, one that predated the gentleness everyone kept telling me was new.Dave settled deeper into the cha
