Chapter 108

Stefan Rodriguez waited at the corner table of the dimly lit bar, nursing a drink he didn't want. The place reeked of stale beer and cheap perfume, nothing like the upscale establishments he'd frequented during better days. But that was the point. No one would recognize him here. No reporters lurking in corners, no business associates to witness his fall from grace.

No one except the woman who had helped destroy his life.

The door swung open, letting in a blast of chill evening air. Rose Lewis stood framed in the doorway, scanning the room with narrowed eyes. When she spotted Stefan, her face hardened into the mask he'd grown too familiar with, beautiful and cold as carved ice.

She wore black from head to toe, her outfit probably costing more than most people's monthly rent despite her recent financial troubles. Always keeping up appearances. Always the perfect facade.

Rose threaded her way between tables, ignoring the appreciative glances from men seated at the bar. She s

Rose stood on the rooftop of a building across from the Grand Plaza Hotel, her face lit by the orange glow of flames. The night air carried smoke and screams to her ears, a symphony of destruction that made her heart race. She laughed, the sound bursting from her throat in waves, wild and uncontrolled."Look at it burn," she whispered, then laughed again, louder this time. "Look at it all burn!"From this height, she could see everything, fire trucks with lights flashing, ambulances lined up along the street, police pushing crowds back from danger. The once-beautiful hotel was now a blazing skeleton, its west wing completely collapsed, windows shattered across its face like broken teeth. The ballroom where Camille had stood so proudly just hours before was now a pit of flames and black smoke.Rose's laughter died suddenly, replaced by a strange, hollow silence. She stepped closer to the edge of the roof, her eyes fixed on the destruction below. All those months of planning. All those

Camille crouched beneath a table with three young women in evening gowns, all sobbing in terror. The second explosion had blocked their path to the main exit with burning debris."Listen to me," Camille said firmly, her voice cutting through their panic. "There's another way out. Through the service corridor. But we need to stay low and move fast."The women nodded, their faces streaked with tears and soot."Follow me," Camille ordered. "Stay close. Cover your mouth with your dress if you can."They crawled from under the table into the thickening smoke. Camille led them along the perimeter of the room, away from the worst of the flames. Her eyes burned. Her lungs screamed for clean air. But she pushed forward, guiding the terrified women toward safety. The service door appeared through the smoke, its outline barely visible. Camille reached it first, pulling it open to reveal a relatively clear corridor beyond."Go!" she urged the women. "Straight ahead. You'll reach an exit in thirty

The first explosion hit without warning. One moment, Camille was helping an elderly woman toward the exit, her arm supporting the frail body. The next, a thunderous boom shook the building. The floor beneath them trembled. Crystal chandeliers swayed dangerously overhead. The blast came from the kitchen area, not the main ballroom. But the sound alone was enough to shatter the orderly evacuation into panic.People screamed. Pushed. Ran for the exits. The elderly woman in Camille's arms stumbled and nearly fell."I've got you," Camille promised, tightening her grip. "We're almost there."Thick smoke began pouring from the service corridors, filling the ballroom with a choking gray cloud. Through it, Camille could make out security personnel directing guests toward exits, their flashlights cutting through the haze."This way!" she called to a group of confused guests who had frozen in place. "Follow the security lights!"A second explosion rocked the building, stronger than the first. Pl

Chapter 151Jason moved silently through the service corridor, his flashlight beam sweeping across the walls and floor. Twenty years in private security had taught him to trust his instincts, and right now every nerve in his body screamed danger. When Alexander Pierce had ordered a full sweep of the building, Jason had chosen to check the basement himself."East corridor clear," crackled a voice through his earpiece. "Copy that," Jason replied. "Moving to check the electrical room."The door to the electrical room was unlocked, the first red flag. Hotel policy required all maintenance rooms to be secured at all times. Jason drew his weapon before pushing the door open with his shoulder. The room appeared empty at first glance. Rows of circuit breakers lined the walls. The constant hum of electricity filled the air. Jason moved his flashlight methodically across the space, checking every corner, every shadow. Then he saw it.Attached to the main circuit panel was a black device the si

Chapter 150Rose adjusted the black bow tie of her server's uniform, checking her reflection in the service elevator's mirrored wall. The disguise was perfect, hair tucked under a cap, face subtly altered with makeup to change her bone structure. No one would recognize her as the woman in the green dress who had shown herself to Camille earlier. That had been the distraction. This was the real plan."Two minutes," the man beside her said, his Russian accent thick even in those two words. Anton Bessonov had sent his best, Mikhail, a man whose hands had ended many lives. Tonight, those hands carried a black duffel bag that would end many more.Rose nodded, glancing at her watch. "Security will be focused on the ballroom now. The maintenance corridors should be clear."The elevator stopped at the basement level. When the doors opened, Rose peered out first, confirming the hallway was empty before stepping out. Mikhail followed, his movements fluid despite his large frame."This way," Ros

Chapter 149Spotlights swept across the Grand Plaza Hotel's ballroom, catching on crystal chandeliers that scattered light like diamonds. Underneath them, New York's elite mingled in formal wear that cost more than most people earned in months. Women draped in silk and jewels. Men in perfectly tailored tuxedos. The soft notes of a string quartet floated above the murmur of conversations and tinkling champagne glasses.Camille Kane stood just outside the ballroom doors, watching through a crack. Her blue gown shimmered in the dim light of the hallway, but she had never felt less festive."Security check complete," said Jason, Alexander's head of security, into his earpiece. "Main floor is clear. Balconies and kitchens clear. All entrances covered."Camille nodded, barely hearing him. Her thoughts remained with Victoria, who was gathering her strength in a private room upstairs before making her entrance."Camille." Alexander's voice brought her back to the present. He stood beside her

Chapter 148Camille knocked on Victoria's office door, files clutched under her arm. The security plans for the gala needed one final approval, and despite Victoria's reluctance about the event, Camille knew she would want to review the details. When no answer came, she knocked again.Still silence.Camille turned the handle, expecting to find the office empty. Instead, she found Victoria slumped in her chair, eyes closed, face pale as paper. A small bottle of pills had tipped over on the desk, its contents scattered across important documents."Victoria?" Camille rushed forward, files forgotten, falling to the floor.Victoria's eyes fluttered open. For a moment, confusion clouded her face, then recognition dawned. "Camille. I was just resting my eyes."But Camille wasn't listening. Her gaze had locked on the pill bottle. The label faced upward, the word "OXYCODONE" visible in bold print, along with Victoria's name."What are these?" Camille picked up the bottle, dread pooling in her

Alexander Pierce stood in the ballroom of the Grand Plaza Hotel, watching his security team transform the elegant space into a fortress. Men in black suits installed hidden cameras in crystal chandeliers. Others tested metal detectors disguised as decorative archways. Every entrance, every window, every air vent was being secured."The sniper teams will be positioned here, here, and here," his head of security explained, pointing to locations on the blueprint spread across a table. "Full view of all approaches. No one gets within a hundred yards without being spotted."Alexander nodded, but his mind was elsewhere. Rose Lewis had vanished completely. No sightings. No trails. It was as if she had disappeared into thin air. And that worried him more than if she'd been openly threatening them. The silent threats were always the deadliest. His phone buzzed. Stefan Rodriguez's name flashed on the screen. Alexander stepped away from the security team to take the call."What do you have for m

Chapter 146Pain came first. A deep, burning ache in his chest that seemed to pulse with each heartbeat. Then sounds filtered in, the steady beep of machines, the squeak of rubber-soled shoes on linoleum, hushed voices just beyond his reach.Herod Preston opened his eyes. The hospital room swam into focus slowly. White ceiling. Blue curtains. Clear tubes running into his arms. And a man in a dark suit sitting beside his bed, watching him with tired eyes."Mr. Preston," the man said, leaning forward. "I'm Special Agent Morgan with the FBI. Can you hear me?"Herod tried to speak, but his throat felt like sandpaper. A nurse appeared, holding a small cup of water with a straw. He sipped, the cool liquid both painful and soothing as it went down."Yes," he managed finally, his voice a raspy whisper. "I hear you."Agent Morgan nodded to someone Herod couldn't see. A woman stepped into view, also in a dark suit. "Agent Chen," she introduced herself. "You've been unconscious for four days, Mr
