MAVERICK

“I feel miserable.” I flex my arms as I walk past my pack members, watching them part ways for me. No one wants to risk setting me off; they all know it won’t end well for them.

Then I hear someone call my name. I turn, ready to see who’s daring enough to wake a sleeping wolf. And of course, it’s her—my mother.

I walk up to her and stop right in front of her without saying a word. She doesn’t speak either, not for a whole five minutes. I have no idea why she called me.

“Mama, why did you call me?” I finally ask, doing my best not to sound rude. I might be the Alpha, but my mama wouldn’t hesitate to quote “discipline me.”

“Why are you trying to scare everyone, Mr. Big Bad Wolf?” she asks, smiling that smile I know isn’t a smile at all, but a warning.

“Mama, how am I scaring everyone?” I respond after a few seconds.

“Mr Big Bad Wolf, why are you in such a terrible mood?” she asks as she touch my arms and pulls me into her arms.

“Mama! Stop calling me that and don’t hug me, I’m no longer a baby!” I said, pulling out of her reach. She put her hands on her hips, and she give me a lovely smile.

"How about you answer my question?" she said, still wearing a smile on her face.

Before I could answer, I heard a gasp of shock from multiple people behind me, and I knew the reason behind the gasp cause I played a major role in the cause of shock.

"Now what did this person do this time around to warrant this level of violence?" Mama questioned.

The person in question, being the spokesperson of the head of the werewolf council, was carried out of the council gathering after I beat him up for questioning me and trying to order me around.

"Mama, he spoke on the forbidden subject." I give my mother my only answer and walk away, as I'm not in the mood to listen to her leadership lectures.

I know you are curious about what the forbidden subject is, and I'll tell you. The council head spoke of taking another mate, as it's been over three years since I lost my mate during childbirth, and I need to move on and choose one of the pack women to be my luna so I can give the pack an heir. Everyone in the park is aware that the subject is forbidden cause everything someone brings up the subject, they end up at the pack hospital, and they spend weeks healing, even though wolves heal faster because of the level of wounds I inflict on them, and it was the council head's turn today.

My mum did not stop me because she knew how sensitive the subject was to me; the pain of losing a mate is for life, but now I'm still going to get a lecture later. I'm glad she is giving me alone time to reflect on my behavior.

JASMINE

I lay facedown on my bed, deep in thought as my mother move around my room doing nothing in particular, she's just trying to get my attention, but I'm not in the mood to listen to her new gossip about someone whom I can't remember as my brain has been foggy since that day, and I dread leaving my room.

I dread not just leaving my room, the curtains of my room are drawn shut, so no sunlight can penetrate into my room, and the door to my room is currently open because my mum refuses to sit in a dark room. I can't wait for her to leave so I can have my quiet room back to myself.

I tried to reach my wolf, but she's not responding. Since that dreadful day, my wolf has been quiet and not even speaking when I talk to her. I know she is still somewhere in me, but she's not responding, and I know the reason. The loss of our mate made her weak, and I know that soon enough, I will lose myself too.

"Roseline, leave her alone. When she's ready, she will heal and move on, but she can't do that if you keep hovering around her without letting her sort out herself and her feelings". I heard someone say from the door, the voice sounded muscular and familiar, but I am unable to put a face to the name, even though I've heard that voice multiple times.

I'm still lying face down on my bed, but I can hear my mum and the newcomer exchanging words silently, but I pay them zero attention as I drift off into a restless sleep.

  • SECOND MARK SECOND SOUL   CHAPTER NINE

JASMINE I don’t know when I fall asleep again. All I know is that when I do, my body feels too heavy—like I’m being held down by something I can’t see. My chest tightens, and I breathe in sharply, my lungs burning as if I’ve been running for miles. The first thing I notice is the feeling. A pull. Not painful. Not gentle either. Just… there. It wraps around my chest and settles deep in my bones, like my body recognizes something my mind refuses to accept. My heart starts racing, and panic crawls up my throat. No, I think desperately. Not again. Then I hear it. Mate. The voice is soft but firm, echoing inside my head. I freeze, my fingers curling into the bedsheets. “That’s not possible,” I whisper hoarsely. But the voice doesn’t disappear. I have always been here. The room fades. Suddenly, I’m no longer in the hospital. I’m standing under a silver sky, the ground glowing faintly beneath my feet. The air feels alive—thick with power, ancient and wild. I turn slowly, my

  • SECOND MARK SECOND SOUL   CHAPTER EIGHT

MAVERICK The room feels too small for the thoughts crowding my head. I stand near the window of the hospital room, arms crossed tightly over my chest, forcing myself not to pace. The steady beep of the machines is the only thing grounding me, reminding me that she’s alive. Breathing. Safe. Barely. My wolf is restless, pacing inside me like a caged beast. She’s our mate, Jax keeps repeating, like saying it enough times will make it make sense. I drag a hand down my face and close my eyes—and the memory hits me hard. Flashback The door had exploded off its hinges. Roseline. She stood there half-shifted, wolf ears sharp, fangs bared, claws out, rage rolling off her in suffocating waves. I barely had time to react before she launched herself at me. “WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY DAUGHTER?!” Her voice shook the walls. Before she could reach me, Beta Corey grabbed her mid-air, holding her suspended until she stopped thrashing. Her eyes—so much like Jasmine’s—burned into me with pure ha

  • SECOND MARK SECOND SOUL   CHAPTER SEVEN

JASMINEAt first there is nothing. No sound. No light. Just a deep, hollow, darkness that wraps around me, heavy and unnaturally still. It feels wrong–too quiet, like even my wolf has gone silent. That’s what frightens me the most. A faint ache pulse through my skull, slow and rhythmic, like a distant drum. My head feels too heavy to lift, my limbs weighted down as if i’ve been drugged. I try to reach for my wolf, for that familiar presence that is always there–Nothing answers.Panic stirs, sharp, and instinctive.I inhale suddenly, the scent of earth and pine flooding my senses before i’m fully awake. The smell is too strong, too vivid. My wolf stirs weakly in response, a low whimper curling in the back of my mind. “I’m alive” she murmurs faintly. Relief washes through me, trembling and fragile. My body feels wrong–drained, overextended, like i shifted without meaning to and paid the price. A dull burn lingers beneath my skin, especially along my spine and shoulders, the famil

  • SECOND MARK SECOND SOUL   CHAPTER SIX

MAVERICK“Mate,” I hear my wolf call out.I freeze.Mate? What mate?“Jax, go back to sleep,” I mutter. Our mate is dead. Even after all these years, my wolf and I are still grieving. But today is not about us.Then my nose catches that scent again, and Jax starts howling happily inside my head. I can feel how badly he wants out. My senses sharpen instantly—my vision becomes clearer, my hearing more acute, my nose picking up scents faster than normal. I know I could shift at any moment.“Jax, stop!” I say, struggling to restrain both myself and my wolf, which is never an easy task.I scan my surroundings quickly, trying to locate the source of the scent. It’s close—too close—and whatever it is has my wolf on edge.“Mate, mate, mate, mate,” Jax sings in my head, and a pounding headache follows.I look around furiously, and then I see her.Standing at the entrance of the Mate Meeting Arena is a beautiful woman dressed in purple. Her long curly hair cascades down her back, and she seems

  • SECOND MARK SECOND SOUL   CHAPTER FIVE

JASMINEIt's Mate meeting day, and Daisy, Eva, and I are in my room getting dressed. Daisy bought a maroon-colored Mermaid dress, Eva bought a blue-colored dress, and I bought a short purple halter-neck bodycon dress with a slit at the front. I look at myself in the mirror; my complexion looks better, my round face looks pretty, my pouty lips are shiny, and my full curly hair hangs down my back. “I look beautiful,” I mutter to myself, “I can’t believe this is me.” “Well, that’s you, and you indeed look fabulous, cute, and sexy,” says Eva as she hugs me from behind. “I’m sure a lot of eyes will be on you,” Daisy says with a wink.I’m sure too, now that my mate passed, a lot of men who have not gotten their mate will try to ask for my hand. I don’t think I’m ready for that. I just want to live for myself. For years, I’ve waited and kept myself for my mate so I can experience the never-ending love that comes with the Mate bond like my parents and other mated members in the pack. Now

  • SECOND MARK SECOND SOUL   CHAPTER FOUR

MAVERICKI did not have to chase them out of my house cause they left after two hours. After they left, I stood in a silent house full of memories. I met my mate Alice at the last Mate meeting, gathering my pack held. FLASHBACK…I stood at the entrance of the pack, welcoming people from other packs, when my nose picked up a very sweet cinnamon mixed with a strawberry smell. My wolf was jumping inside of me and howling happily, and I just knew that my mate was around, but I could not see her. I was not worried because I knew we would still meet inside during the gathering. After I was done welcoming people into the pack, the gathering began, and all without mates lined up, male on one side, female on the side. Instantly, people started finding their mate. I picked up that same sweet smell towards my right and walked towards the right trying to pinpoint where that smell was coming from, and I laid my eyes on her. It felt like I was in heaven. She ran into my arms, and it felt electr
