“I hate him.” Jayla’s voice cracked the moment she got to Mia’s apartment. Her carefully constructed composure shattered.

“I hate him so much.”

She dropped her handbag on the couch and covered her face.

Mia shut the door behind her, the look on her face was that of surprise.

“I know, baby.”

Jayla shook her head, tears streaming down her cheeks. “No, you don’t understand.”

Mia walked towards Jayla and guided her to the sofa. She then stepped to the kitchen and mixed two cups of hot chocolate.

The morning of the gala arrived with a strange quietness in the penthouse.Jayla walked down the hallway with one hand holding her phone and the other rubbing her tired eyes. She had barely slept. The questions about the Woodford payments had stayed in her head all night, mixing with thoughts about the gala and everything she still needed to prepare. She turned the corner and almost walked straight into Alexander.“Careful,” he said.Jayla stopped quickly.“Sorry.”Alexander looked at her.For a moment, he said nothing. He had seen Jayla countless times before. He had watched her dress for dinners, sit across from him at breakfast, walk around the house, and spend hours waiting for him to notice her.But something about her this morning made him stop. Her hair was loosely tied behind her head. A few strands had fallen around her face. Her eyes looked tired, and there were faint shadows beneath them.Yet somehow, she still looked beautiful. Not the carefully dressed woman he usually sa

Jayla stepped into the luxury boutique and immediately noticed the rows of designer gowns arranged beneath bright glass lights. The place was quiet, elegant, and expensive, exactly the kind of place Sophia loved.“Good afternoon, ma’am,” one of the attendants greeted Jayla with a smile.“Good afternoon,” Jayla replied as she walked deeper into the boutique. “I’m looking for something for the Woodford gala.”“Of course. We have several new arrivals that came in this week.”The attendant followed her toward the evening section.“Would you prefer something simple or something that will stand out?”Jayla glanced over the dresses.“Something elegant. I don’t need anything too loud.”“I think I have something you’ll like.”The attendant pulled out a deep emerald gown and held it against Jayla.“This just arrived yesterday.”Jayla looked at herself in the mirror. The dress had a fitted waist, a soft neckline, and a long skirt that fell close to the floor. It was elegant without trying too ha

“Jayla, you cannot just sit there and stare at that paper all night.”Mia’s voice pulls her back to the room.Jayla is sitting on the edge of Mia’s sofa, the document still in her hand. She has been staring at the same signature for several minutes.“I don’t understand it,” Jayla says quietly.Mia sits beside her and takes the paper.“You’re sure this isn’t your father’s signature?”“I’ve seen his signature too many times to mistake it.”Mia studies it again.“But the note is in his handwriting?”Jayla nods slowly.“Yes.”Mia’s eyes narrow.“Then your father knew about the payment.”“I think so.”“And he told someone not to let you know?”Jayla looks down.“That is what scares me.”Mia puts the paper on the table.“Why would your father hide something like this from you?”“I don’t know.”“Could it have something to do with the merger?”“The payment happened three years before the merger.”Mia’s expression changes.“Then why was Kensington paying Woodford before there was even a merger

“Who authorized the original Woodford payments?”Jayla’s question hangs in the boardroom. No one answers. She looks from one face to another.Victor sits at the head of the table, his fingers resting against the polished wood. A moment ago, he looked calm. Now his jaw is tight, and his eyes avoid hers.Alex is different. His back is straight against his chair. His face gives almost nothing away, but Jayla notices the small movement of his fingers against the armrest. He is irritated.“Why is everyone suddenly quiet?” Jayla asks.Victor clears his throat.“Jayla, this is an old matter.”“That doesn’t answer my question.”Victor looks at her.“The payments were authorized years ago.”“By whom?”His expression hardens.“Your father.”Jayla blinks.“My father?”Victor nods once.“Yes.”She slowly looks down at the documents in front of her.“My father authorized payments to Woodford before the restructuring agreement?”“Yes.”“Why?”Victor leans back.“That is not something we need to dis

Someone keeps checking the clock.Jake sits near the window, scrolling through his tablet.Victor is at the head of the table. He looks up when Alexander enters.“You’re late.”Alexander glances at his watch.“By three minutes.”Victor’s mouth tightens.“This meeting starts at ten.”“I know.”Alexander pulls out his chair and sits.Jake looks up from his tablet.“You look cheerful.”Alexander gives him a cold look.“Don’t start.”Jake’s lips twitch.“I wasn’t going to.”“You were.”“I was thinking about it.”Alexander ignores him and reaches for the documents in front of him.Victor taps his pen against the table.“We’re waiting for the Kensington representatives.”Alexander doesn’t look up.“They’re not here?”“They’re expected any minute.”He flips through the papers.“Then let’s hope they learned ho

Mia opened the door with a spoon in one hand.“You’re early”Jayla stepped aside.“I didn’t know what else to do.”Mia looked at her face for a moment before moving aside.“That usually means something happened.”Jayla walked in. “Ofcourse it did.”Mia closed the door.“Is it bad?”“I don’t know yet.” That got Mia’s attention. She followed Jayla into the living room.“What happened?”Jayla dropped her handbag on the sofa.“I went to my father’s company.”“I know, you said you were going back.” “Yeah.”“And?”Jayla sat down. Her expression had changed into confusion. “I think something is wrong.”Mia sat opposite her.“What kind of…wrong?”“I can’t figure it out yet.”“Jayla.”“I genuinely don’t know.”She rubbed her palm together.“My father showed me some of the company’s financial records.”“And?”“The numbers don’t make sense.”Mia leaned forward.“How?”Jayla hesitated.” “The company is supposedly struggling. That’s the reason I was married off in the first place. My father ne
