AUGUST

BE HERE BY NOON. BRING YOUR ESSENTIALS.

No congratulations, no emoji, nothing. Just straight to the point. This was very Levi. At least I was getting a thousand dollars a week. I couldn't care less about the strictness. Once I had saved enough, I would leave.

I leaned over, showing it to Ama who was stuffing her face with Cereal while glaring at me. She brought me food yesterday when I almost fainted then she stayed over.

She cleared her throat. “Let me get you straight. You're moving into a stranger's house, a man you barely know all because of money?” she asked flatly.

“Yup,” I said

“I can't talk you out of it can I?” she asked.

“Nope. A thousand dollars weekly is a lot, plus I won’t have your landlord breathing down my neck.” I responded.

“At least send me the address. And if you’re found dead in their house, I’ll hunt every one of them and kill them.”

She threatened.

“Yes ma'am. Plus they're just two.” I said shoving my favorite jeans inside my box. I took four pairs of boots, my favorite jeans, shorts, my tank tops, jock straps, skin care, laptop, and the picture of my parents and Him. Everything else could rot in my apartment for all I care. Or my landlord could throw them, I didn't care.

In the blink of an Eye, I was standing in front of the mansion. The gates opened slowly, like a portal to another world.

Levi's Slate stood at the entrance like he knew I was coming. His suit was sharp and black as always, his shoes were Givenchy, and he wore a Rolex. And I had just noticed he wore earrings. Diamonds to be precise.

He's expression didn't change as he saw me. He cleared his throat.

“You’re early again,” he said.

“It's a habit,” I responded.

He's gaze moved from my box to my fit.

I wore a backless lilac body con top, a low-waist baggy jeans, and my Prada loafers.

“After you,” he said.

I dragged my box with me, heading inside. I could feel his gaze burning my back. When I entered, my jaw almost dropped again. I doubt I'll ever get used to the beauty of this place.

“This would be your room.” I heard Levi say, causing me to turn.

He pushed the double doors open, and the room was unexplainably big. The size of my bed was ridiculous. The view from inside was amazing, the walk-in closet made my room seem like a cartoon doll house.

They should at least have cameras in this kind of house.

“No cameras?” I asked.

“Why would you ask that?” he said raising one brow.

“The last time I was in a place this nice, someone was watching me.” My gaze never left him.

“ I'm very busy and Mr Hale doesn't have the time to watch you on the cameras. What could you possibly do?” he said, straightening his suit.

“Unpack. Dinner is by seven,” he said, his tone flat.

“Dinner?” I asked.

He didn't respond, he just walked out.

Things were formal and scheduled over here.

I unpacked the little things I brought arranging them around and changing the decorations of the room.

It was too plain. By the time I had finished, it was almost seven.

I took my bath and dressed up in black leather pants, a silk backless top. I'd been saving this dress for when I go on a date. I might as well just use it now.

I sprayed my YSL perfume, recoiled my hairand went outside.

Levi stood outside my door. The moment his eyes met mine, his breath hitched.

“I guessed you don't know where the dinner table is,” he said.

“I don't know where anything is,” I responded.

“I’ll take you on a house tour tomorrow,” he said.

“Isn’t this a little too much? He said, gesturing at my outfit.

I looked at him from head to toe, before tilting my head giving him a look that screamed “Really.”

He held out his hands for me and I grabbed them.

“Such I gentle man,” I said.

The dining room looked like it was from a movie. The chandelier that hung over it glowed beautifully. The table was already filled with food, and I wondered when he had the time to do all that.

Levi sat at the other end of the long mahogany table, with a wine in front of him.

“Do you drink?” I ask, sliding into the chair to sit.

“ Yes” “You?” he asked.

“Only when it’s free,” I responded.

He didn't laugh, nor did he smile.

“You’re expected to observe discretion, “ he said, with the wine glass at the edge of his lips.

“Yeah, you've mentioned that before. I am discreet” I said taking a piece of roasted duck.

“You are a lot of things,” he said, his gaze lingering on for too long.

“Really? What I'm I then?” I asked, stuffing a huge chunk of meat in my mouth.

“Talkative, observant, hot,” he said.

The last part made me raise my head.

I leaned back into the chair while smiling. I mean I was Hot.

“Wow,” I said teasing the tip of the glass.

“The East wing is off limits.” He said sitting upright.

How Levi of him.

I scoffed. “So when do I get to see Mr Hale?”

“When he wants to be seen,” he replied.

“ At least tell me what he’s like.” I pleaded.

“He’s a man.” He said wiping his mouth.

“I’ll be in touch, Mr August. Also, breakfast is by eight.”

His tone was professional.

He pulled the chair back and his sleeve rolled up revealing tattoos.

I held myself back from peeling his sleeves off and tracing each tattoo.

“I have tattoos too you know.,” I said standing up.

I turned my back revealing my well-sculpted back with Arabic writings running down.

“Hmm,” that was the only thing he said as he walked towards the door.

“Good night Slate, I’ll be expecting you,” I said.

He spared me one glance before the door clicked shut.

0021AUGUST “Just like that?” I asked him. “Do you want to know or not?” he replied, holding my gaze. “ I want to, it's just- never mind. Let's go.” I smiled as I gripped his wrist, dragging him to the driver's seat. I haven't had alcohol in a while, and I wasn't going to miss on this one. I slid into the passenger's seat, buckling up with a dramatic click that made him glance. The corner of his face twitched, before his eyes went back to the road. The drive felt shorter this time, or maybe I was just thinking too hard to notice the minutes.I kept stealing looks at his side profile: his. Sharp jawline, the faint scar that cut through his left eyebrow, the way his hands gripped the wheel like it owed him money, pressing hard till his knuckles turned white. We pulled into a gravel lot outside a bar that looked like it had given up on life sometime in the nineties. River’s End. Cute.Inside, it smelled like spilled whiskey and regret, the good kind. The bartender—a woman with a lon

  • SEX IN A GLASS HOUSE   JUST THE USUAL LEVI

0020. AUGUST Levi didn't speak to me on that because of what happened yesterday. I tried so hard to sleep, but I couldn't. I turned over my bed. I rolled over multiple times, but I couldn't sleep. My mind kept pondering on the toy and why Levi kept overreacting. It was just a toy. Why did he overreact? I let the thought linger on as sleep dragged me.The next morning, he acted like, I didn't even exist. And somehow this felt worse. More than a cold silence, avoidance. It was clear that he didn't want to be around me anymore. I decided to test it by staying in the kitchen longer than necessary. I went to tease him as usual. I squeezed my face at the first taste of the coffee. "Is the Coffee always thus bitter and bad," I said. "Or did it notice I was here and decide, 'Oh, let's punish August'? " He didn't look up. He kept on cleaning the counter, even though it was more than c

  • SEX IN A GLASS HOUSE   APOLOGIES UPON APOLOGIES

0019 LEVI August was unusually quiet. I knew it was because I snapped at him. I apologized still, but he wasn't having it. Even after he drank the juice, he only mumbled a small thank you and said he was tired and went into his room. I let him go, I didn't bother. No reason. I could only mutter “I'm sorry.” once more, just to ease my conscience at least.Lucien had already warned me to keep it professional, Following him might lead to something I would not want. I cleaned up the kitchen slowly, wiping down the counters as I checked the locks everywhere. He was asleep and we wouldn't want anyone breaking in. By 10:00, the house was dark except for the low lights in the hallways. I did my final sweep with my tablet in my hands, scrolling through the cameras. August's room was empty, his bathroom was empty, and the hallway was empty too. But then I got a motion sensor from the east wing. August was going to be the end of me.The same restricted area I warned him about. The p

  • SEX IN A GLASS HOUSE   SUSPICION

0018 AUGUST Levi refused to speak to me, even his coldness increased. He didn't even spare me a glass all afternoon. Instead, he assigned me chores without saying a word, just issuing simple commands. I polished the glass till my arms ached, but my mind always drifted to the house design, and the text I got that night. “Atticus was alive.” I shook my head, trying to get rid of the thought. Maybe it was Levi playing pranks on me. He obviously heard when I had the nightmare, and maybe, just maybe I had mentioned Atticus’s name. I tried to navigate my thoughts back to the architecture of the house. What kind of house was crafted in such a weird way? Everything seemed off. The reflections doubled back on themself like it was deliberate, like something was hiding in plain sight. After I finished cleaning, I stayed tracing the glass, unsure of what exactly I was looking for. I wanted to stop, but I heard a faint hum behind like a vibration. Electronics. “Fuck.” I staggered

  • SEX IN A GLASS HOUSE   A LITTLE CRACK.

0017LUCIENI sat in my usual chair, staring at the monitors, studying the feeds carefully. I paused at the hallway spot as I saw August in his room, Levi standing by his door, motionless for too long, listening to his cries, pleas and subtle screams. His breathing was audible on the mic. It made my heart ache, my chest tighten. He stood, Levi stood there, conflicted between leaving and staying, but he walked away eventually. But I could see the hesitation in his eyes. Levi had always been reliable, cold, loyal, efficient, trustworthy without question. I hired him some years back when he walked up to my office. A young fragile-looking boy, who chose to run my empire, despite the rules. I told him what it would take. Running my empire simply meant ending his previous life, and becoming a new person. He told me he had no life before now, His eyes were sharp, full of desperation. His attitude was exactly what I needed. He reeked of desperation and hunger. The hunger that fueled hi

  • SEX IN A GLASS HOUSE   IN OMNIA PARATUS

0016 Levi August choking on hot chocolate and blaming it on the wrong pipe was very odd. I knew it was more to that, and that kept on replaying in my head like a bad loop. He was obviously hiding that stupid text in his phone. Immediately the text came, his eyes moved to mine, slowly watching me before he darted them back to his phone. I knew because I had seen the feed from last night when he stripped, touching himself and sending that stupid photo to Nightshade, or to an anonymous person, which is obviously Nightshade. Lucien. He was playing his games and August was just a pawn. I slammed the door so hard, the sound reverberated through the house. I got into my car, driving straight to the company. Lucien was at his desk reviewing documents of his businesses all over the world, and I knew he was just watching the cameras as well. He was always watching, watching every step August made. I coughed, making my presence known to him. "The house tour is done," I s
