Lightning flashed across the sky, lighting up the road for a brief second before thunder followed. Vanya looked out the window before glancing up at the dark clouds. “Etot dozhd' ne prekratitsya yeshche nekotoroye vremya, kogda on nachnetsya,” she said as I drove. {This rain isn't going to stop anytime soon once it starts.} I hummed in response and kept my eyes on the road. We left Kyle's bar just before the rain started to fall. A light drizzle tapped against the windshield as we drove on the road. It was close to midnight. My thoughts drifted straight to Nick. He was probably on his way home in this weather. “Tell me you're not thinking about that kid,” Vanya said. I glanced at her before looking back at the road. “Конечно я.” {Of course, I am.} “What's your relationship with him anyway?” she asked. For a few seconds, I fell silent and the only sound in the car was the rain against the glass. What exactly is he to me? Just my student? I scoffed at my own thoughts as I drove down the road. It bothered me more than I wanted to admit. I remembered the first day we met. Someone had sent a man to kill me at Kyle's bar. Nick had been terrified after witnessing it, yet the very next day, he challenged me and demanded that I pay for what I'd done. I couldn't stop thinking about his bright eyes and his nerdy features. And honestly, I was glad he wasn't hiding those tired, beautiful eyes behind a pair of glasses. Even with everything he's been through, he still kept himself neat and carried himself well. He was intelligent too. But he was my student. A young boy who still had his whole life ahead of him. Getting involved with him would only put him in danger. What if Father found out about him? “Do you realize the way you stare at that boy?” Vanya suddenly asked, pulling me from my thoughts. I lifted my eyes to her. “How do I stare at him?” “S lyubov'yu. {With affection},” she replied, half yelling, and my heart skipped a beat. I pulled up in front of the house, and everything went quiet before she let out a sigh. “I'll assume you know what you're doing,” she said and got out of the car. I followed behind her. The men standing by the large entrance bowed their heads as we walked inside. I rubbed my temple and sighed. “When are you leaving?” I asked as she made her way through the lounge area. “You didn't even ask why I'm here. You're more curious about when I'm leaving?” she asked as she took off her coat. “I don't care why you're here. Just... take your men and leave,” I said and she rolled her eyes. “I'll be staying in the country for a while. I'm here to take you back to Russia,” she said. Then she pulled a cigar from its case, lit it with her lighter, and took a slow drag. I clicked my tongue and scoffed before walking closer to her. “Take the room at the end of the hall and leave first thing tomorrow morning.” I started heading upstairs, but her voice stopped me. “Antonio isportit tvoyu zhizn', yesli ty ne vernesh'sya so mnoy. {Antonio will make your life miserable if you don't come back with me}.” I let out another scoff and turned back to face her. “My life was made miserable long before I escaped that world,” I said as I walked back down the stairs toward her. “He found me here and sent people after me so I could keep staining my hands, doing his dirty work just to stay trapped in his world,” I added. “I've just managed to escape Russia, Vanya, and then he sent you to bring me back...” I was saying when she cut me off. “On ne sdelal. YA prishel syuda sovershenno odin. {He didn't. I came here on my own.}” Her words came out sharp, leaving me speechless. “What?” I asked quietly. “You know what I went through just to leave Russia and build a life here,” I said and she laughed. “Build a life?” she snapped. “You should know that the Kerzhakov life became your life the moment you were born into that family.” I ran a hand through my hair and let out a tired sigh. “Leave my house first thing tomorrow morning,” I said and turned to walk away. “Antonio needs you. He plans to take over Italas City.” she said and I turned back to her instantly. “Что? {What}?” I asked. She pressed her cigarette into the ashtray, putting it out. “He's planning to take full control of Italas' trade routes,” she said. “Tunnels, weapons… everything you can name.” I shook my head hard. “No. That's not possible. He's going to get everyone killed.” She raised her voice. “And that's exactly why he needs you back. Every other organization is fighting for the same city.” “How can the heir of the Kerzhakov family stay out of this war?” she asked and I shook my head again. “Tell him he has the wrong heir,” I said and started up the stairs. “Or maybe you're not reconsidering this because you're already attached to the people here?” she asked, stepping in front of me. I stopped and frowned. “What are you talking about?” I asked, trying to move past her. “I heard you're investigating your mama's death,” she said and I froze for a second. Then I shot her a glare. “Get out of my way,” I snapped. “Or is it the kid? Or the minister's daughter?” she added, and I felt my anger rise. “Uydi s dorogi, Vanya. {Get out of my way, Vanya},” I said. “Tell me,” she yelled back. “What does any of them have to do with what you're talking about?” I shouted. She didn't back off. Instead, she grabbed my hands. “Vernemsya v Rossiyu, Vadim. {Let's go back to Russia, Vadim},” she said softly. “Komu yeshche on sobirayetsya peredat' organizatsiyu, yesli ne vam? {Who else is he going to hand the organization to if not you}?” she asked gently. I stayed quiet for a moment. Then I slowly pulled my hands away from hers. “Goodnight,” I said at last before walking into my room.NICK WALKER ©After my conversation with Mr. Kyle that day, I still couldn't get hold of Enzo for another three days.Mr. Kyle wasn't letting me see him because his men kept stopping me. Even when he left his office, one thing or another always stopped me from getting to him.My head was a mess. Back at home, I had planned a small outing for Mira and Mom without telling either of them. But it turned into a failure, just like I expected.Mira and I had a fight before I left home for work.Enzo still wasn't replying to my messages.I pressed my lips together and stared at the entrance of the bar."What's got you thinking?" Shawn asked as he stood in front of the counter."Ah. Nothing, really," I said with a forced smile.I suddenly spotted Mr. Kyle leaving his office upstairs with his men. I quickly grabbed my phone."Where are you going?" Shawn asked as I left my station.“Uh, the bathroom. Cover for me for a while,” I told him before walking outside. Before I could get to him, his men
NICK WALKER ©The exams were over, and the holiday had finally started. But I hadn't been able to reach Enzo for the past three days.He hadn't come to my house, and I hadn't seen him at work either. He wasn't replying to my texts or answering my calls.I couldn't stop worrying.I just wanted to know if he was okay. Was he sick?“Aren't you going to eat?” Avery asked as we sat down for lunch.I sighed as I stared at the food in front of me.“If you're not going to eat it, give it to me,” Avery said, pulling my plate toward herself.Seriously? Before she could take another bite, Mira smacked the back of Avery's hand with her spoon and pulled the plate back to me.“Ow! That hurt.”“Mira, apologize,” I said quickly as I took Avery's hand to check it.“How did you even choose her as your friend?” Mira asked, shaking her head as she continued eating.“He wasn't eating. You didn't have to be so harsh,” Avery said, rubbing the spot where Mira had hit her.“Well... sorry,” Mira mumbled.Avery
LORENZO GRAYSON \ VADIM KERZHAKOV ©My phone had been ringing nonstop the entire drive home. It was still ringing when I walked through the front door. I tossed it across the spacious living room and headed upstairs.I grabbed a travel bag and opened the drawer to get my passport. Then I looked at my reflection before sliding the mirror aside, revealing the weapons hidden behind it.I picked a few of them and reached for my phone again. I'd already sent Kyle a message, asking him to book me a flight back to Russia.I rushed back downstairs and searched for the phone I'd thrown across the living room.“Where the fuck is it?” I yelled as I searched the lounge and the kitchen connected to it.Just then, I heard a car screech to a stop outside the house. It was Kyle.I grabbed my bag and hurried to his car.“The ticket?” I asked as I walked up to him.“What's going on?” he asked.I ran a hand through my hair and let out a frustrated sigh.“Kyle, I fucking need the ticket.”“Not until you

I could wait.“ She said.“You should go. It'll take a while.“ I said.I clenched my hands on the device in my palm as I headed to the office.I needed to know what was on the drive.I unlocked the door, walked over to my laptop, and plugged it in.I searched through the files and found only one video.I clicked play.“Move it,” someone said from the video. It looked like an underground room, with several men standing around. Then I saw my mother.I furrowed my brows and paused the video. Why was Mom in the video?I pressed play and kept watching as they dragged her by the arms while she tried to break free. Then it hit me.This was connected to the day she died. She was wearing the same clothes she had on when they found her body. They threw her onto the floor, and my breath caught in my thr
LORENZO GRAYSON \ VADIM KERZHAKOV©The moment I realized what had happened at the college last night, my thoughts went straight to my father.Antonio must never find out about this. The college was large and prestigious. If the video leaked, it would spread fast. Thinking about the footage of Nick and I made me wonder if Antonio already knew.Nick had to stay safe.I promised I would protect him, and I had no intention of breaking that promise.Kyle found out about the situation before reaching out to me. Then Professor Douglas, Alina, called me when the video started spreading around the college.I found someone who hacked the college account and got the video taken down, though it took some time.I handled the college board the same way I did when I first came here to work as a professor.Somehow, my thoughts drifted back to Nick once more, and I let out a quiet sigh.If Father had already found out about him, I had to move fast. There was still so much to do, especially finding the
NICK WALKER ©After I got Avery's message, I couldn't think straight. I switched off my phone because the school group chats wouldn't stop flooding my screen.I didn't think Enzo knew about the situation while we were still at the bar.I acted like everything was normal while we talked. He asked what was wrong on the drive home, but I couldn't tell him. This could ruin Enzo's role in College. What would happen if Enzo lost his job because of me?As soon as he stopped in front of my house, his phone rang.I was sure it was someone calling about the situation. This was all my fault.“Do you want me to take you to my place instead?” he asked, ignoring the call.“What will happen to us if everyone finds out?” I asked quietly. He reached over, smoothed my hair, and pressed a soft kiss to my lips.“Does it matter?” he asked.“Huh?“His phone rang again. He switched his phone to airplane mode and looked back at me.“The only thing that matters is you. As long as we're together, nothing else
