Clara's POV

I couldn't draw oxygen into my lungs.

The air in the fourth-floor corridor had suddenly grown thick, toxic, and utterly devoid of life. Black spots danced aggressively at the outer edges of my vision, vibrating like swarm insects. I slammed my right hand flat over my mouth to muffle the raw, hideous sob that was tearing its way up from the dark depths of my throat, starving for release.

I stumbled backward out of the alcove, my heels catching on the heavy plush carpet, my hands clawing at the silk-covered walls to keep from collapsing onto the floor right outside Room 412.

I didn't wait for the golden elevator doors to chime. I couldn't stand the thought of standing in that quiet, carpeted lobby waiting for a carriage to take me down while my husband was inside that room, stripping the red dress off a woman who looked like everything I was not. I threw my weight against the heavy steel push-bar of the fire exit stairwell.

The heavy metal door gave way with a dull, echoing clack, and I shoved myself through, tumbling into the raw, unpainted concrete stairwell.

I didn't walk down the steps; I practically threw myself down them. My vision was swimming with tears, blinded by the image of Mark’s hands digging into that woman’s narrow waist. Halfway down the second flight, my left heel caught on the rough nose of a concrete step. I went down hard, my knee slamming into the concrete edge with a sharp, sickening crack that sent a lightning bolt of white-hot agony straight up my thigh.

I didn't stop. I didn't even pause to rub the skin tearing through my dark tights. I scrambled back to my feet, dragging my limping leg, and kept running down. I just needed air. I needed to get out of the heavy, linen-scented tomb where my four-year marriage had just been executed.

I hit the ground floor landing, threw my entire body weight against the red metal panic bar, and burst out into the cold daylight.

The heavy door slammed shut behind me, dumping me into a narrow, filthy service alleyway behind the hotel. The damp air hit my face, thick with the stench of rotting food, damp brick, and diesel exhaust.

My legs gave out completely.

I collapsed against the side of a rusted green dumpster, my knees slamming into the wet, oil-stained asphalt. The dampness soaked through my tights instantly, chilling my skin to the bone, but I couldn't move. I curled into a tight, pathetic ball, wrapping my arms around my stomach, clutching my heavy curves as a full-blown, violent panic attack seized my chest.

I hyperventilated, pulling shallow, ragged gasps of dirty alley air into my lungs.

I was nothing. I was discarded trash. I was a fat, ugly, naive joke of a woman who had actually believed that if she tried hard enough, if she made herself quiet enough, her husband might one day look at her without disgust. Mark had stood in our kitchen and called me crazy, and I had almost believed him. But he wasn't lying because he was confused; he was lying because I meant less than zero to him.

Tears streamed down my cheeks, hot and bitter, mixing with the grime on my face. I sobbed so violently my abdominal muscles cramped, tears blinding me as I rocked back and forth on the wet pavement.

Then, two bright beams of white light cut through the dingy gloom of the alley.

I flinched, throwing a bruised, dirty hand up to shield my eyes from the glare. A sleek, midnight-black Maybach glided silently over the wet asphalt, its engine humming like a purring predator, stopping precisely three feet in front of where I sat crumpled in the mud.

The heavy rear passenger door swung open smoothly.

A pair of immaculate, custom Italian leather shoes stepped directly into a dirty puddle on the pavement. I pushed my wet hair out of my eyes, peering up through a blur of hot tears, my breath hitching in my raw throat.

Julian Thorne stood towering over me in the narrow, filthy alleyway.

He didn't look shocked to find me sitting in the garbage. His dark, unreadable eyes swept over my tear-streaked face, my scraped, bleeding knee through my torn tights, my shaking, mud-caked hands. A muscle in his sharp jaw clenched so hard I could hear his teeth grind from where I sat.

Without saying a single word, the billionaire CEO dropped to his knees, ruining his tailored dark trousers on the wet pavement, a

Clara's POV The silence inside Julian’s penthouse didn't feel peaceful it felt heavy, dense, and almost suffocating.Downstairs in the secondary wing, Leo was sound asleep in his nursery, completely unaware of the terrifying near-miss at the park only hours ago. He was safe, tucked beneath a soft blanket with his favorite stuffed bear pressed against his cheek. But for me, the terror hadn't subsided. It had merely settled deep into my bones, leaving behind an icy, constant tremor in my hands that no amount of physical warmth could ease.I sat perched on the edge of the plush leather sofa in the center of the vast living room, staring blindly down at the steam rising from the mug of chamomile tea Julian had placed on the table in front of me. I wrapped my fingers around the ceramic cup, but the heat barely registered against my numb skin. My mind kept looping the same terrifying reel: Mark’s bloodshot eyes, the contorted rage on his face, and his thick hand lunging forward to grab my

Julian's POV The black bulletproof Maybach hadn't even come to a complete stop against the park curb before I shoved the rear door open.Every muscle in my body was coiled impossibly tight, humming with a lethal frequency that threatened to tear me apart from the inside out. The moment my boots hit the damp gravel path, the ambient noise of the afternoon seemed to vanish, replaced by the heavy, suffocating pressure of my own unbridled fury.I saw Clara first. She was standing near the green bench, her face as drained of color as a sheet of winter snow. She was clutching Leo so tightly to her chest it was a miracle the boy could draw breath, her fingers dug deep into his small coat. Her eyes were wide, dilated, drowning in a mixture of deep shock and lingering trauma. And then my gaze shifted downward.Mark. Pinned flat against the dirt like a filthy parasite, writhing helplessly beneath the heavy boot of my lead operative, Miller. The mere sight of him anywhere near Clara anywhere ne

Clara's POV "Don't touch him!"The scream tore raw and bleeding from the deepest part of my soul, a sound so violent it scraped my throat raw. Leo shrieked in terror, instantly picking up on the primal panic flooding the space between us. He scrambled backward against the fabric of his seat, crying out as he tried to pull his little arm away from the reaching hand."Come here, you little" Mark grunted, his fingers snapping shut. But before those thick fingers could make contact with my baby's soft skin, the park exploded. They didn't run from the entrance; they seemed to materialize out of thin air. Three men in nondescript dark coats men I had vaguely noticed sitting on distant benches or strolling along the perimeter moments earlier converged on our location with mechanical, terrifying speed. There was no shouted warning, no hesitation, no wasted breath. It was an execution of absolute, ruthless efficiency. One second Mark was leaning over the stroller, his face twisted in maliciou

  • SHATTERRED VOWS, STOLEN SHADOWS   Chapter 52

Clara's POV The autumn wind carried a sharp, biting chill that cut straight through the weave of my wool coat, but the frost settling deep in my chest had nothing to do with October. For the past three blocks, a heavy, suffocating sensation had clung to my spine. Every time the heel of my boot struck the pavement, an electric current of warning skittered across my skin. I kept glancing over my shoulder, but the sidewalk behind us was just a mundane tapestry of commuters buried in scarves, turning pages of newspapers, or rushing home to dinner. The street looked ordinary. Safe.Yet the phantom weight remained.I tightened my grip on the handle of the stroller, my knuckles turning stark white against the dark rubber. Up ahead, three-year-old Leo remained blissfully oblivious to the quiet panic clawing at my throat. He babbled softly in his own toddler language, kick-kicking his small, boot-clad feet in rhythm with the wheels as he reached out to snatch at a stray golden leaf skittering

Clara's POV Three days later, the air inside the federal family court annex felt charged with electricity.I sat at the mahogany counsel table beside Julian and his lead litigator, Evelyn Reed a terrifyingly sharp, impeccably dressed corporate and family law attorney whose reputation for destroying opposing counsel was legendary in the city. Across the aisle, sitting at the plaintiff's table, was Mark.He looked confident, almost smug. He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his posture rigid, leaning over to whisper something to his smirking attorney. He thought he had outsmarted us. He thought his emergency petition backed by falsified medical affidavits and corrupted family court judges would secure an immediate ex parte order stripping me of custody before I even had a chance to defend myself.Judge Harrison, an older, stern-faced magistrate with decades on the bench, adjusted his glasses and looked down from his elevated podium."We are here today on an emergency ex parte petition fil

  • SHATTERRED VOWS, STOLEN SHADOWS   Chapter 50

Clara's POV The papers slipped from my numb fingers, scattering across the hardwood floor like fallen leaves. My vision blurred, the walls of the hallway seeming to warp and close in around me as the oxygen disappeared from the room. My chest tightened until every breath felt like inhaling crushed glass.I stumbled backward, my back slamming against the hallway wall, and slid down until I was sitting on the floor with my knees pulled up to my chest. Sobs jagged, chest-heaving, breathless sobs tore out of my throat before I could even try to stop them."Mommy! Mommy, what's wrong?" Leo cried out, dropping his wooden blocks and running over to me. His small hands grabbed anxiously at my sleeves, his face twisting with infantile terror at the sight of me breaking down. "Mommy, don't cry! Please don't cry!""Leo... baby..." I gasped, unable to form complete sentences, my fingers clawing at my own collar as I choked for air. The panic attack was absolute, total, and paralyzing. My brain w
