"I thought my husband was the monster in my story. I was wrong. The real monster was the man pulling his strings—and he was doing it all for me." For four years, Clara’s life has been a gilded cage. Trapped in a suffocating marriage, she is constantly belittled by her husband, Mark, who makes sure she feels ashamed of her plus-size, post-partum body. She stays for one reason only: to protect her three-year-old son. She thinks she is invisible. She thinks she is unlovable. She has no idea she is being hunted. Julian is a ruthless billionaire CEO, a man who commands empires and destroys his enemies without breaking a sweat. He is also Mark’s boss. But Julian has a dark, deeply guarded secret: for five long years, he has been obsessively stalking Clara from the shadows. To Julian, every curve of her body is sheer perfection. He has watched her endure Mark’s cruelty, waiting for the perfect moment to pull the strings and claim the goddess he worships. When a meticulously plotted setup fails to make Clara file for divorce, Julian realizes he can’t leave anything to chance. If a divorce won't free her, a tragic accident will. Now a widow, Clara finds herself falling into the arms of her late husband's powerful, intoxicating boss. Julian gives her the world, worships the body she was taught to hate, and makes her feel like a queen. But what happens when Clara unlocks his safe and discovers that her savior is actually a sociopath? What happens when she realizes the man who healed her is the exact same man who orchestrated her husband's murder? He killed for her. And he will tear the world apart to drag her back.

Chapter 1

Clara's POV

The mirror in the master bathroom was a liar. It insisted on showing me a woman who looked like a ghost draped in expensive silk, a woman whose face was pale, sunken, and etched with the invisible tally marks of four years of marriage.

I turned away, the movement heavy. My joints ached, a dull, throbbing reminder of the life I’d been living. I looked down at my hands. They were trembling again. I pressed them hard against the cold marble of the vanity, trying to force the shaking to stop. Deep breaths, Clara. Just make it to the gala. Make it through the dinner. Don’t spill the wine. Don’t look at him. Just be a mannequin.

"Clara!"

The voice wasn't just a sound; it was a physical blow to the back of my neck. Mark was downstairs, his voice a sharp, jagged blade cutting through the silence of the house.

"I'm coming," I whispered, though my throat felt like it was filled with broken glass.

I reached for the black cocktail dress hanging on the door. It was a size larger than the clothes I used to wear before the baby, before the years of stress-eating in secret and the soul-crushing weight of his critiques. I pulled it over my head, smoothing the fabric over my hips. My stomach tightened, a familiar, sick dread coiling in my gut. I knew what was coming. I knew the moment I stepped into his line of sight, his eyes would flick to my waistline, to the soft curve of my stomach, to the marks my son had left on my skin.

He didn't see a wife. He saw an investment that was depreciating in value.

I walked down the grand staircase, my heels clicking like a metronome counting down to an execution. Mark was waiting by the front door, checking his watch. He looked immaculate in his tailored suit, a sharp contrast to the way I felt, like I was wearing a costume that didn't fit.

When his gaze finally landed on me, it didn't travel up to my eyes. It started at my shoes and crawled upward, slow and methodical, stopping exactly at my midsection. He didn't say a word. He didn't have to. The way his lip curled, just a fraction of an inch, the way his eyes went flat and hard, like pebbles skipped across a frozen lake told me everything.

"The dress," his voice deceptively smooth, the kind of calm that preceded a hurricane. "It’s tight. Did you think wearing black would hide the fact that you’ve completely let yourself go?"

My heart stuttered. I felt the familiar heat rise in my chest, a desperate, clawing need to defend myself, but I swallowed it down. If I fought back, the evening would end in a closed room, and I would be the one wearing the bruises to the breakfast table tomorrow.

"I thought it was elegant," I murmured, my voice barely audible.

He took a step toward me, closing the space in a heartbeat. He reached out, his hand wrapping around my upper arm. It wasn't a caress; it was a firm, possessive grip that dug into the skin. He leaned in, his expensive cologne, sharp, cold, filling my senses.

"Elegant?" he whispered, his breath hot against my ear. "It’s a disaster. You’re an embarrassment to my name, Clara. Do not speak tonight. Do not try to be clever. You are there to look like a wife, not to act like a person. Do you understand?"

"Answer me," Mark hissed, his fingers tightening until I knew a dark, angry mark would bloom there by morning.

"I understand," I managed to choke out.For the sake of my son I will endure anything, I will shield him from my terrors.

He dropped my arm as if I were something dirty he had been forced to touch. He turned on his heel and walked toward the door, not even checking to see if I was following. I stood there for a heartbeat, staring at the empty space where he had been, feeling the phantom pressure of his fingers on my arm.

The car ride to the gala was an exercise in silence. I stared out the window, watching the city lights blur into streaks of neon gold. I felt like a prisoner being driven to a party. I wasn't there; I was lightyears away, trapped in a cage of my own making, wondering if this was how I would spend the rest of my life, slowly fading until there was nothing left but a shell.

When we pulled up to the venue, the valet opened the door. The flash of cameras and the hum of conversation spilled out into the night air. Mark emerged first, fixing his jacket with that practiced, effortless grace that hid the monster underneath. He offered me his hand, but it was a trap. As I took it, he leaned in, his smile fixed for the cameras, his eyes icy and dead.

"Smile, Clara," he hissed through his teeth. "You look miserable. Fix your face, or you’ll regret it the moment we get back."

I forced the corners of my lips up, a painful, brittle expression that felt nothing like a smile. I stepped onto the red carpet, the blinding light of the paparazzi disorienting me. I looked toward the entrance, my gaze sweeping over the crowd of elite, wealthy, and powerful people.

And then, my eyes locked.

Across the room, standing near a pillar, was a man I hadn't seen in months, the one person who always seemed to be watching, even when he wasn't there. Raymond, Mark's boss. He wasn't smiling. He was staring directly at me, his gaze so heavy, so intense, it felt like he was reaching across the room to pull me toward him.

He didn't look at my dress. He didn't look at my weight. He looked at me, at my eyes, at the terror I was trying so hard to hide, as if he were reading every secret I possessed.

As I watched, Raymond raised his champagne glass, a slow, deliberate salute, his eyes never leaving mine. And just for a second, the rest of the room vanished. The noise stopped. It was just me, the monster by my side, and the man who was looking at me like he was already planning his next move.

Mark suddenly pulled on my arm, dragging me forward, but my eyes remained glued to Raymond. He hadn't just looked at me; he had seen me. And beneath his calm, composed exterior, I saw a flash of something dark, something hungry, and something terrifyingly protective.

The night was about to write its fate which I will pay heavily for either ways. I only knew that as Raymond began to walk toward us, cutting through the crowd like a predator through deep water, my heart didn't just flutter, it stopped completely. A cold shiver went down my spine as I watched him, I felt like the floor beneath my feet was about to crack wide open, which was better than facing such great a man while looking like a country fat pig.
