KAEL'S POV

Mara drives faster than the road through the quarry land was built for, gravel kicking up behind the tires in a way that would normally worry me more than it does right now.

"How much further?"

"Another mile. Maybe less." She doesn't look at me when she says it, eyes fixed hard on the road ahead, knuckles pale against the wheel.

I let the silence sit between us for a while, watching the trees blur past, turning over everything I already know and everything I'm choosing not to say yet. She lied about the call. I caught that the second it left her mouth. What I haven't figured out is whether the lie is protecting her, or protecting something bigger than her.

"Tell me about the den," I say finally. "How do you know it?"

"I told you. I've been there before."

"When."

She's quiet long enough that the question starts to feel like an answer on its own.

"A long time ago," she says. "Before I was pack. Before any of this."

That's new information, and it lands heavier than I expect it to. I've known Mara my whole life, known her as North Ridge, as loyal, as someone whose history I never thought to question because it never seemed relevant. I'm starting to understand how much of that assumption I never actually tested.

"Before you were pack," I repeat. "Meaning what, exactly."

"Meaning there's a version of my life you don't know anything about, Kael, and today isn't the day I'm going to hand it to you just because you're scared and looking for someone safe to be angry at." Her voice cracks on the last word, thin enough that I catch it even over the engine. "I'm trying to help. Can you let that be enough for now?"

I don't answer. I don't trust myself to answer in a way that doesn't make this worse.

The road narrows, trees pressing in close on both sides, and then it opens suddenly onto a clearing I don't recognize, an old structure half swallowed by vines and rot, windows boarded, the whole place wearing the particular stillness of somewhere nobody's used in years.

Mara cuts the engine. Neither of us moves right away.

"This is it," she says.

It doesn't smell right. That's the first thing I notice, stepping out into air that should carry something, anything, recent enough to matter. Instead there's only old wood, old dust, the stale absence of anyone having been here in a long time. No trace of Ashford. No trace of Lyra. Nothing but silence and rot and a building that hasn't held a living thing in years.

"Mara."

"I know how this looks."

"Then explain it. Now."

She turns to face me, and something in her expression has shifted from careful to raw, the mask she's worn through this entire ordeal finally slipping.

"Do you even know if she loves you?" The question comes out of nowhere, sharp enough that it takes me a second to register she's actually asked it. "Or are you just hurting yourself over a bond you don't fully understand, for a woman who might not feel a fraction of what it's costing you?"

"Don't."

"I'm serious, Kael. Look at what this has already done. You're dying. Dying, because of a promise made before either of you ever met, and you're out here chasing a ghost trail because some part of you is so desperate to believe it was worth it that you can't stop to ask whether it actually is."

"This isn't about her. This is about you lying to me about a location that doesn't exist."

"This is about all of it." Her voice cracks, finally, the thing she's been holding back since the ravine breaking loose all at once. "I've been here for ages, Kael. Years. I've stood beside you through everything, and you've never once looked at me the way you look at her, not for a second, not even by accident. And then she shows up, running from a debt that was never yours to pay, and suddenly you're willing to die for a bond that's barely a week old."

"Mara..."

"I'm not finished." She steps closer, and there's nothing calculating left in her now, just something desperate and exposed. "I'm not asking you to love me. I gave up on that a long time ago. I'm asking you to survive this. Let her go. Let Ashford have what he was always going to take eventually, and let the rest of us keep what we've already built. We were fine before her, Kael. We were a peaceful pack, and now everything is falling apart because she crossed into our land."

Everything that's fallen apart since the Blood Moon started falling apart the second she crossed into our land.

I stare at her, and for a moment I don't recognize the woman standing in front of me at all.

"You lied to me," I say slowly, "to get me alone out here, so you could try to talk me into letting the woman I'm bonded to die for the sake of peace you think we'll get back if she's gone."

"I lied to you because I love this pack more than I've ever let myself say out loud, and I'm terrified of what happens to all of us if you die for someone who ran the first chance she got, same as she's probably doing right now."

"She's not running. She's being held against her will by the man who abused her for years, and every minute we waste standing here arguing about my feelings is a minute she doesn't have."

Something in Mara's face closes off, fast, like a door shutting.

"Then go," she says, quiet now, stripped of whatever courage got her through the last five minutes. "Go find her yourself. I'm done pretending I know where to look."

  • SHE RAN, HE HUNTED    Before My name

KAEL'S POV I don't sleep. Dr. Kim puts me on a cot in the back room with a drip in my good arm and tells me to rest. I lie there listening to the pack's phones ring through the walls until the window goes grey.Mara stays in the chair beside me all night. Twice I open my eyes and find her watching me, and twice she looks away first. I don't ask what she's thinking. I haven't forgotten how her story smelled in Lorenzo's study, and I'm too tired to carry two fights at once.At dawn Dr. Kim presses two fingers along my forearm, and his face does what a doctor's face does when he doesn't want to say a number out loud."Yesterday it was at the scar," he says. "It's past the elbow now.""How long do I have?""I can't tell you that. I can tell you it moved two inches overnight, and that you should be lying down."I sit up anyway. The room tilts and settles. I've started to treat that as the price of standing.Darin comes in a few minutes later with Lorenzo behind him, both of them wearing t

  • SHE RAN, HE HUNTED    The Guest List

LYRA'S POV They move me at dawn. I overheard Ashford tell his man we would leave before moonrise, so he changed the plan, and I think he did it to remind me that he can.The car is long and black and smells like leather and cedar. Nobody blindfolds me. That worries me more than a blindfold would, because it means he isn't afraid of what I'll remember. I watch the road and memorize the turns anyway, out of habit. It doesn't help. I don't know where I would run to.I keep thinking about the video. I said those words to Kael's face, or to the camera that would carry them to him. I told him the bond was a mistake and that he should stop looking for me. Part of me hopes he believes it, because then he might stop and save his strength. The rest of me knows that if he believes it, I did that to him on purpose. He told me he would put me somewhere I couldn't survive if I tried anything again. He hasn't. He has put me somewhere comfortable, which is worse in its own way.The sun is fully up w

  • SHE RAN, HE HUNTED    Thirty-One Seconds

KAEL'S POV I open it before I let myself think too hard about why my hands are shaking. Her face fills the screen, and for a second nothing else exists. Not the medical house, not Dr. Kim's quiet movements across the room, not the ache sitting constant in my chest. Just her, alive, breathing, close enough that I could almost believe the screen was a window instead of a recording.I have to grip the phone with both hands to keep it steady. She's alive. Whatever else this message turns out to be, that single fact lands first and hardest, relief so sharp it nearly doubles me over in the chair. Days of nothing but a pull with no direction, and here she is, her voice about to fill the silence that's been eating me alive since the den. Then I actually hear what she says."I need you to stop looking for me. This was a mistake, all of it, since the night at the gate. I don't want this bond. I never wanted it. Please, just let me go, and let yourself live."The relief curdles into something I

  • SHE RAN, HE HUNTED    The Decay Beneath

KAEL'S POV The medical house sits at the edge of the pack grounds, a squat building that's treated more broken bones and birthing complications over the years than anything resembling what's happening to me now.Mara half-carries me through the door, and Dr. Kim looks up from his desk with the particular alarm of a man who's seen plenty of injuries and recognizes immediately that this isn't one of them."Sit," he says, already crossing the room. "Arm."I give it to him without arguing. He's pack, a wolf himself, old enough to have treated three Alphas before me, and the way his nostrils flare the second he leans over the ritual scar tells me he's already found something he doesn't like."How long has it looked like this?""Looked like what?" I glance down at my own arm. The skin is unbroken, healed clean around the old cut, nothing visibly wrong with it at all.Dr. Kim leans closer, his nostrils flaring slightly. He examines the scar for a moment before pressing two fingers lightly a

  • SHE RAN, HE HUNTED    The Bond Gives No Answers

KAEL'S POV I don't argue with her. There's nothing left to argue about, not with the den sitting empty behind us and whatever answer I came here for still nowhere in reach."We should go," I say instead. She looks at me, surprised, like she expected something harder from me and doesn't know what to do with its absence.I'm not leaving her stranded out here because we're furious with each other. Whatever's happened between us, we came in the same car, and I'm not petty enough to let that fact become one more casualty of this morning. We walk toward the truck in silence, gravel crunching under our boots, the distance between us wider than the actual space allows."You never asked," Mara says eventually, her voice tight. "About the den. What it meant that I'd been there before, long before I was pack. You just moved past it like it didn't matter.""I didn't think it was the time.""It's never the time anymore, Kael. Not for me. Not for anything that isn't her." She stops walking, forcin

  • SHE RAN, HE HUNTED    Some of it wasn't a lie

LYRA'S POV Footsteps sound in the hallway, closer than they should be this soon.I don't put the phone back where I found it. I drop it instead, half-panicked, somewhere near the base of the bed, almost knocking the bed lamp over. The door opens. A guard steps in, eyes already scanning the room."Everything all right in here?""Fine." My voice comes out steadier than I feel."Couldn't sleep." I add.He finds it within seconds, crouching to pick it up off the floor, turning it over once in his hand before his gaze lifts to me, narrow and unconvinced."Didn't you say you couldn't sleep?""I couldn't."His eyes flick briefly to my hands before returning to my face. He doesn't look convinced, but he doesn't press either. He just pockets the phone."I'll let Ashford know."He backs out and pulls the door shut behind him. I count to twenty before I let myself breathe again, certain for one fragile moment that I've actually gotten away with it.Ashford arrives less than ten minutes later, an
