LYRA'S POV

I wake to the smell of cedar and something colder underneath it, metal maybe, or the particular stillness of a room that's never been lived in.

My wrists aren't bound. That surprises me before anything else does, before the ache in my skull or the stiffness pulling through every muscle I own.

I'm lying on a couch instead of the forest floor, covered by a blanket someone draped over me with more care than I expected.

For one disoriented second, I think Kael found me. I think I'm safe.

Then I hear the voice, and every drop of hope leaves my body at once.

"You gave me quite a scare, running off like that."

I sit up too fast, the room tilting before it settles. He's sitting across from me in a chair that looks expensive and uncomfortable at the same time, legs crossed. He watches me the way he used to, as though he's already decided I belong to him and is simply waiting for me to accept it.

Roman Ashford.

Three months of running, and here he is, close enough to touch, exactly as calm as every memory I've carried of him.

"How?" The word comes out rougher than I mean it to. "How did you find me."

"That's an interesting question." He tilts his head, considering me the way he once considered a signature on a contract. "Would you believe me if I told you I didn't have to look very hard?"

"What does that mean?"

"It means you've been easier to track than you think, Lyra. Easier than you've been for three months, in fact. Something changed." His eyes drop, briefly, to my forearm, to the place where the gold light rose during the rite, and something in his expression shifts into quiet satisfaction. "Something changed the night you let that Alpha touch your blood with his."

My stomach drops. I don't understand what he means, not fully, but understanding isn't required for dread to set in.

"You're lying."

"I rarely bother to lie when the truth works just as well." He leans forward, elbows on his knees, closing some of the distance between us that I desperately want to keep. "You delivered yourself to me this morning without me lifting a finger. Exhausted, starving, alone. You practically delivered yourself."

I think of the mark. The cold spot under the shower water. The shadow passing beneath my skin that I told myself I imagined.

I didn't imagine it.

"What did you do to me?"

"Nothing you haven't already agreed to, in a way." He says it so reasonably, so gently, that it takes a moment for the horror of it to actually land.

"Your father agreed to quite a lot on your behalf, if you'll recall. I simply made sure the agreement held, regardless of how far you ran or who you convinced to stand between us."

"Kael will come for me." I swallow. I don't even realize when I say that.

"I'm counting on it." He doesn't show the faintest flicker of concern, like the idea of Kael Varga hunting him down is mildly entertaining rather than threatening. "Let him come. Let him see exactly how far loyalty gets a man who claimed a bond he couldn't fully explain."

"The bond is real."

"Is it?" His smile doesn't reach his eyes. "Or is it simply the thing you needed to believe, the same way your mother needed to believe your father loved her enough to keep his promises?"

The mention of my mother lands like a slap, precise and deliberate, meant to wound rather than inform.

"Don't talk about her."

"I'll talk about whoever I like, Lyra. You're not in a position to set terms right now." He stands, smoothing nonexistent wrinkles from his jacket, unhurried in a way that makes my skin crawl worse than if he'd shouted. "I left your Alpha chasing an empty promise. He'll spend the next several hours chasing a trail that leads nowhere useful, while you and I have time to discuss what happens next."

"I'm not going anywhere with you."

"You already have." He moves toward the door, pausing just before he reaches it, looking back at me with an expression I recognize even now, even after everything, because I spent months learning to read exactly how dangerous his calm could be. "I'd rest, if I were you. We have a long evening ahead of us, and I find exhausted guests make for such tiresome company."

He leaves the door unlocked behind him. I notice that immediately, and I understand, with a cold certainty settling into my chest, that he's not worried about me running.

He already knows I can't outrun whatever he did to me.

I count to sixty before I move, listening for footsteps that don't come.

The door opens without resistance, just like he said it would. I ease it wider, just enough to catch voices drifting from a room down the hall, Ashford's among them, low and unhurried.

"We move her before moonrise," he's saying. "I don't want her within reach of anyone from that pack a moment longer than necessary."

A second voice, lower, less certain. "And the Alpha?"

"She was promised to me, not to some Alpha who got in the way of a transaction he didn't understand. The mark makes sure nothing changes that. Whoever binds himself to her without my blessing doesn't get to keep the privilege for long."

My whole body goes cold.

"How long," the second voice asks, "before it..."

"That depends on him. On how hard his body fights it. Days, perhaps. A week if he's stubborn." Ashford's tone doesn't change at all, like he's discussing weather instead of a man's life. "Either way, the outcome doesn't change. She's mine. The curse simply reminds everyone else of that."

I stop breathing.

Kael is dying somewhere I can't reach him, all because of a bond he thought would save us both.

  • SHE RAN, HE HUNTED    Before My name

KAEL'S POV I don't sleep. Dr. Kim puts me on a cot in the back room with a drip in my good arm and tells me to rest. I lie there listening to the pack's phones ring through the walls until the window goes grey.Mara stays in the chair beside me all night. Twice I open my eyes and find her watching me, and twice she looks away first. I don't ask what she's thinking. I haven't forgotten how her story smelled in Lorenzo's study, and I'm too tired to carry two fights at once.At dawn Dr. Kim presses two fingers along my forearm, and his face does what a doctor's face does when he doesn't want to say a number out loud."Yesterday it was at the scar," he says. "It's past the elbow now.""How long do I have?""I can't tell you that. I can tell you it moved two inches overnight, and that you should be lying down."I sit up anyway. The room tilts and settles. I've started to treat that as the price of standing.Darin comes in a few minutes later with Lorenzo behind him, both of them wearing t

  • SHE RAN, HE HUNTED    The Guest List

LYRA'S POV They move me at dawn. I overheard Ashford tell his man we would leave before moonrise, so he changed the plan, and I think he did it to remind me that he can.The car is long and black and smells like leather and cedar. Nobody blindfolds me. That worries me more than a blindfold would, because it means he isn't afraid of what I'll remember. I watch the road and memorize the turns anyway, out of habit. It doesn't help. I don't know where I would run to.I keep thinking about the video. I said those words to Kael's face, or to the camera that would carry them to him. I told him the bond was a mistake and that he should stop looking for me. Part of me hopes he believes it, because then he might stop and save his strength. The rest of me knows that if he believes it, I did that to him on purpose. He told me he would put me somewhere I couldn't survive if I tried anything again. He hasn't. He has put me somewhere comfortable, which is worse in its own way.The sun is fully up w

  • SHE RAN, HE HUNTED    Thirty-One Seconds

KAEL'S POV I open it before I let myself think too hard about why my hands are shaking. Her face fills the screen, and for a second nothing else exists. Not the medical house, not Dr. Kim's quiet movements across the room, not the ache sitting constant in my chest. Just her, alive, breathing, close enough that I could almost believe the screen was a window instead of a recording.I have to grip the phone with both hands to keep it steady. She's alive. Whatever else this message turns out to be, that single fact lands first and hardest, relief so sharp it nearly doubles me over in the chair. Days of nothing but a pull with no direction, and here she is, her voice about to fill the silence that's been eating me alive since the den. Then I actually hear what she says."I need you to stop looking for me. This was a mistake, all of it, since the night at the gate. I don't want this bond. I never wanted it. Please, just let me go, and let yourself live."The relief curdles into something I

  • SHE RAN, HE HUNTED    The Decay Beneath

KAEL'S POV The medical house sits at the edge of the pack grounds, a squat building that's treated more broken bones and birthing complications over the years than anything resembling what's happening to me now.Mara half-carries me through the door, and Dr. Kim looks up from his desk with the particular alarm of a man who's seen plenty of injuries and recognizes immediately that this isn't one of them."Sit," he says, already crossing the room. "Arm."I give it to him without arguing. He's pack, a wolf himself, old enough to have treated three Alphas before me, and the way his nostrils flare the second he leans over the ritual scar tells me he's already found something he doesn't like."How long has it looked like this?""Looked like what?" I glance down at my own arm. The skin is unbroken, healed clean around the old cut, nothing visibly wrong with it at all.Dr. Kim leans closer, his nostrils flaring slightly. He examines the scar for a moment before pressing two fingers lightly a

  • SHE RAN, HE HUNTED    The Bond Gives No Answers

KAEL'S POV I don't argue with her. There's nothing left to argue about, not with the den sitting empty behind us and whatever answer I came here for still nowhere in reach."We should go," I say instead. She looks at me, surprised, like she expected something harder from me and doesn't know what to do with its absence.I'm not leaving her stranded out here because we're furious with each other. Whatever's happened between us, we came in the same car, and I'm not petty enough to let that fact become one more casualty of this morning. We walk toward the truck in silence, gravel crunching under our boots, the distance between us wider than the actual space allows."You never asked," Mara says eventually, her voice tight. "About the den. What it meant that I'd been there before, long before I was pack. You just moved past it like it didn't matter.""I didn't think it was the time.""It's never the time anymore, Kael. Not for me. Not for anything that isn't her." She stops walking, forcin

  • SHE RAN, HE HUNTED    Some of it wasn't a lie

LYRA'S POV Footsteps sound in the hallway, closer than they should be this soon.I don't put the phone back where I found it. I drop it instead, half-panicked, somewhere near the base of the bed, almost knocking the bed lamp over. The door opens. A guard steps in, eyes already scanning the room."Everything all right in here?""Fine." My voice comes out steadier than I feel."Couldn't sleep." I add.He finds it within seconds, crouching to pick it up off the floor, turning it over once in his hand before his gaze lifts to me, narrow and unconvinced."Didn't you say you couldn't sleep?""I couldn't."His eyes flick briefly to my hands before returning to my face. He doesn't look convinced, but he doesn't press either. He just pockets the phone."I'll let Ashford know."He backs out and pulls the door shut behind him. I count to twenty before I let myself breathe again, certain for one fragile moment that I've actually gotten away with it.Ashford arrives less than ten minutes later, an
