Pearl

“Why the fuck are you calling me?” I hissed into the phone, not bothering with pleasantries.

Just the thought of being pleasant to my cunning step sister made my skin crawl. Just the sight of her name flashing across my screen made me so mad.

“Hello sister,” Moana called out to me in a tone that was falsely sweet. I knew better than to think her capable of anything other than deceit and lies.

If I was to take a guess, I would say she was calling to rub it in my face, the fact that she’d managed to steal my mate away from me.

Thinking of Brian put a sour taste in my mouth.

“You have two seconds to stare the reason why you’re calling me, else I’m hanging up,” I threatened, sounding impatient.

“So impatient,” Moana tsked. “Is that any way to talk to your sister?”

“You’re not my sister,” I retorted, gripping my phone tightly. “If you were, you never would have hurt me as badly as you did.”

“Of course,” Moana scoffed. “This is just like you to play the victim at any given chance.”

PearlThe drive to the restaurant took an hour. It was close to the border. But that didn’t deduct from the resplendence of the lighting on the patio.I totally understood why Harold would choose a place far away from the pack house. Out here, it was less likely for pack members to run into us both. The outer ambience of the restaurant was warm and inviting.Harold got the car door for me. He looped my arm around his and led us inside. At the door, the chef was already waiting to receive us. He seemed like he’d been waiting on standby for quite some time now. His face lit up with a smile at our entrance. “Welcome to Lenny’s restaurant,” he greeted us. “We’re glad to have you wine and dine with us tonight.”“Thanks Lenny,” Harold returned his smile. He snaked an arm around my waist and pulled me closer to his side. “Allow me to introduce you to my date. This is Pearl. Pearl, this is Lenny. He’s one of the most talented chefs you’ll ever meet.”“Pleasure to meet you,” I smiled at Lenny

PearlI tried on several dresses. Apart from the dress that Harold had bought me that one time, everything else in my wardrobe looked basic. There was nothing in there that screamed ‘elegance.’In the end, I had to raid Patricia’s closet. She had some nice things in her clothes rack. I finally saw the perfect dress, hanging at the far end of the rack. It was a red number. It had a heart-shaped neckline and a figure-hugging cut. I could pair this dress up with the heels Harold bought me. I could curl my hair and leave it down in shiny ringlets.Smiling, I pulled the dress off the rack and shut the closet door.My phone began to ring just then. I checked who the caller is. It was Patricia.I panicked at the sight of her name flashing on my screen. Lightning quick, I exited her room and returned to mine. I hid the dress in my wardrobe before I swiped my screen. It was set to video call. Patricia’s sun kissed features appeared a moment later.“Hey,” I called out to her. I sounded shrill,

PearlLunch was tense. Harold and I sat across from each other. The sound of our forks scraping against our plates was loud and filled the room. With each bite I took, I had to chew twice as hard. Most of my appetite was gone. All I could think of was the conversation that was going to come after lunch. Whatever it was, deep down, I knew it had something to do with us— our relationship. The suspense was killing me. “I’m done!” I dropped my fork with a light bang. Harold looked up from his food. His eyebrows were raised. “Don’t look at me like that. You can’t just drop an ‘we need to talk’ on me and expect me to be right as rain.”“Relax Pearl,” he heaved a breath. “It’s nothing bad. Far from it.”“Regardless,” I stressed. “I’m nervous. I can’t wait to hear what you wanna say to me. It’s all I can think about. I don’t think I can eat another bite until I hear it.”“Give me a minute then… I’ll clear our plates.” He rose up to his feet and got both our plates. He took them to the sink

PearlPatricia left for archery camp the next day. The pack house felt empty without her.How the hell was I supposed to stay here without her for one full month? As things stood, I would be the only she-wolf in the house. And then, there was Brian and Harold. And the occasional cook.Brian was cool. He was nice and would stop to chat with me for a bit, but that was it. These days, he was busy working at the construction site and taking care of pack business on the alpha’s behalf.Speaking about the alpha, he was spending more time at the site than at the pack house. The morning of Patricia’s departure, Brian offered to drive her to camp. I wanted to come along, but Brian had errands to run after he dropped Patty of. The best I could do was say goodbye to her at the front door.“I’ll call you the minute I get to camp,” Patricia hugged me tightly. “Keep your phone on you always.”“Yes sergeant,” I joked. It was better than whining on her shoulder and begging her not to go. Archery was

PearlHarold came to get us the next day. He showed up at noon and drove Patricia and I back to the pack house.Vicki was already at the house, awaiting our arrival. When she saw me, she rushed across the room and flung her arms around my neck. Her grip was tight and stiffling. I wanted nothing more than to shrink away from her, but I forced myself to bear her hug.It was over before I knew it.“Oh Pearl. It’s good to see you looking all recovered,” she pulled away to stare at me. “I’ve been worried.”“I’m fine,” I told her. My smile felt way too tight for my face. “The hive you dropped accidentally, I heard they were killer bees.”“Oh yeah,” she scoffed. “Harold told me. I had no clue. I’d found the hive on the site and wanted to get rid of it. If I had know they were killer bees, I never would have touched the hive. Hell, I put myself at risk without even realizing it.”“But you didn’t get stung… how lucky for you.” I stepped away from her hold, putting some distance between us.“Pe

PearlPatricia looked at me, saw the tears on my face and shot a scowl at her dad.“What the hell is going on? Did you make her cry? What did you say to her dad?”“What? No. Patty. Please. Calm down. It’s not like that,” I shook my hands in the air, alarmed at her accusations. “If anything, Harold was trying to console me.”“Oh,” Patricia blinked. She pulled her shoulders backwards, relaxing her stance.Harold snorted and shook his head at his daughter. “Your ability to rush to conclusions about me sometimes knows no bounds Patty.”“But if my dad didn’t make you cry, why the fuck are you crying? Is it the bee sting? Or the meds?”“I know Patty,” Harold interrupted. “About everything. The real reason why Pearl is here.”“Oh,” Patricia’s mouth formed an O of surprise. She shot me an apologetic look. “I swear, I didn’t tell him.”“I know,” I gave my best friend a reassuring smile.“I found out on my own,” Harold informed her. “And contrary to what you and Pearl think, I have no intention
