LUCAS POV

The day had started quietly enough.

For once, there were no pack disputes, no council letters, and no Chris hovering around my desk making a mess of my paperwork.

I was halfway through signing off a supply order when there was a light knock on the door. One of my guards stepped in, his head bowed respectfully.

“Alpha,” he said quietly, glancing around as though afraid to be overheard.

I looked up, my pen still in hand. “What is it?”

He hesitated. “It’s about the girl, Emily.”

Immediately, I set my pen down. A sharp tension cut through the air. “What about her?”

The guard leaned closer, lowering his voice. “There was… an incident, sir. One of the outer patrols said she was seen near the garden earlier today—with Joe.”

That name alone was enough to make my blood run cold.

I stood from my chair so fast the pen rolled off the desk and clattered to the floor. “Joe?” I repeated slowly. “Are you sure?”
