LOGINLUCAS'S POV
I realized a little too late that my Beta had gone mad. Over the weeks, my best friend and Beta, Chris had come up with a strange theory that the reason for my recent outbursts was the fact that I didn't have sex often. At first, I thought it was a joke but a few weeks ago, he had invited the council of elders for a meeting to discuss the issue, and much to my surprise, he had gone ahead with the plan. "Chris!" I snarled. I stormed down the steps and through the garden until I got to his car. "What the fuck do you think you're doing, man?" I snapped at him. "Getting my best friend a pretty lady to cool his nerves with," He replied and laughed. "For real, you need to relax." "You would take her back to wherever you brought her from at once!" I snapped. He stared at the gold plated watch on his wrist and he frowned. "It's well past noon already, and guess who you sent to far away California, just to sign a peace treaty with Alpha Damon?" I sighed in frustration and he continued. "Yup. That's right. Me!" "But I didn't ask for her," I argued. "Then prove to me that you still have a heart in there and let her stay for the night," He said. I thought about it for a moment, and decided that I didn't really have an option. "Fine," I grunted. "Just for the night." Chris winked at me before speeding off and I muttered a curse as I made my way back to the door. She was still standing at the door, with her head bent low to the ground. "Your name?" I demanded. "Em - em - Emily," She stammered and looked up at me. "Lucas," I grunted in response. "Lucas Sinclair." She nodded glumly and I assessed her for a few seconds before ushering her in. She was young, probably twenty or so, and very beautiful. Her hazel colored eyes were small and almond shaped, and her lips were full and bright red. I noticed the faint glow on her spotless skin and I wondered where my Beta had managed to buy a girl that looked very much like a princess from. I glared hard at the transparent white gown that unsuccessfully covered her silky smooth skin from my sight and I was instantly irritated. Did she think that wearing a see through gown would make me accept her? "Listen up," I grunted. "You'll stay out of my way and out of my sight for the rest of the day. Tomorrow, you'll be gone." I noticed that her mood turned sour instantly, but I didn't care one bit. By morning, she was going to be gone from my life for good. I called my maid and instructed her to show Emily to the guest room, while I went upstairs to my own room to get some rest. After a long and tiring morning of negotiations with the Alpha of a neighboring pack, I was exhausted. I fell face first on my clothes infested bed, and a few minutes later I was already fast asleep. When I eventually woke up, it was late in the evening already. I stood up from my bed and spun around, confused. Right before I slept, my room was a mess, with clothes and files scattered across the drawers. Now, everything except my bed was neatly tucked in place. I picked the intercom, and requested for my maid's presence and a few seconds later, she knocked on the door. "Come in," I grunted. She bowed slightly and I stared at her. "You didn't knock when you came in hours ago," I said. "How come you suddenly have manners?" She returned the stare, confusion written all over her face and I rose to my feet in anger. "I've warned you about entering my room while I am asleep, haven't I?" I snapped. "Yes, my King," She nodded. "I never did it again." "Then how do you explain this?" I pointed at my neatly folded clothes in the wardrobe. From the expression on her face, it was clear that she was confused, and that was when it hit me. It wasn't her. It was that little bitch, Emily! She had entered my room when I was asleep. She had probably gone through my important documents. What if she was a spy from another pack? A hundred thoughts ran through my head all at once, and without thinking further, I bolted out of the room and made my way down the stairs. "Emily!" She appeared from the kitchen immediately. She wore a red apron over her white gown and there was a spoon in her hand. "You were in my room," I snarled. "I - I saw the door half open," She stammered. "And it looked a bit disorganized, so I thought to help you arrange it." I inched closer to her, so close that I could hear the sound of her heart thumping in her chest. "Who do you work for?" "What?" "I said who the fuck do you work for?" I snapped. She broke down in tears at once and I was instantly taken aback. Had I been too harsh on her? "I just wanted to help," She sobbed. "I'm sorry I entered without knocking." I glared hard at her for a while. I hated to admit it but she was telling the truth. She didn't even look like she could hurt a fly. "And what the hell is this?" I asked, as I walked into the kitchen. "I made dinner," She muttered. "Here, you can try it out." She served a portion of broccoli cheddar soup in a silver bowl and placed it on the table before me. "After you," I said and handed the spoon over to her. With shaky hands, she took the spoon and started eating while I watched. "I have maids," I growled. "What is your business here?" "I was just trying to help," She muttered. "Then go to your room and don't come out until morning!" I snapped, banging my fist on the table. "That's how you can help!" Emily rose up from the table and ran upstairs to the guest room in tears. I could hear her sobs as she ran but I didn't care. I had seen many women like her before and I knew what they all wanted - a taste of my wealth. Their tricks never worked on me. I took a spoon and had a taste of the soup. Surprisingly, it tasted really good. With the way she looked so frail, I never expected that she would know how to cook. But I was not going to be carried away with that. Tomorrow, she was going to be gone from my life and gone for good!Lucas POVI stood there for a few seconds longer, still holding Emily in my arms, my eyes fixed on the spot where the shadow had been. Nothing remained. No mark, no trace, nothing to show that something unnatural had just existed there. But I knew better than to trust what I could see. The absence of something dangerous did not mean it was gone. Sometimes it only meant it had moved.Emily’s weight shifted slightly against me, and I looked down at her. Her eyes were still open, but they were heavy now, her strength drained from whatever she had just done. Her breathing was slow, uneven, like her body was trying to catch up with what had just happened.“We need to get you back,” I said quietly. She nodded faintly, but she didn’t speak.I did not wait any longer. I lifted her properly into my arms and turned back down the corridor. The guards moved out of the way immediately, their eyes filled with questions they did not dare ask. I ignored them. Right now, nothing mattered more than get
Clarisse POVI felt it even before anyone came to tell me anything. I felt it deep inside me like a sharp pull that refused to be ignored. It was not pain, not exactly, but it was close enough to make me sit up from where I had been lying. My chest tightened as something heavy pressed against my senses, something familiar yet wrong at the same time. I had felt it once before, long ago, in whispers and fragments, in the stories I was never meant to fully understand. And now it was here again.“They’re moving,” I whispered to myself. My fingers curled slightly against the bed as I tried to focus on the feeling. It was faint, but not gone. Something had just happened, something strong enough to ripple through whatever connection existed between them. The failed ones. The empty ones. The ones that should never have been allowed to exist in the first place.Emily.My jaw tightened at the thought of her name.Of course it was her.Everything always came back to her now.I pushed myself up s
Lucas POV“Emily,” I said softly, brushing my hand against her cheek. Her eyes fluttered, but she did not fully respond.“I’m here,” I added, my voice firmer now, like I needed her to hear it.She blinked slowly, trying to focus.“I didn’t lose anything,” she whispered again.“I know,” I said. But I was not fully convinced. Not because I doubted her.But because I did not understand enough yet to be sure. And right now, not understanding felt like the most dangerous thing in the world.I lifted her carefully into my arms and turned toward the guards who were still standing far at the end of the corridor, watching everything like they had just witnessed something they would never be able to explain.“Clear this area,” I ordered. They snapped back to attention immediately.“Yes, sir.”“And no one comes near this corridor without my permission.”“Yes, sir.”I did not wait for anything else. I carried Emily back toward our room, my steps steady but fast. My mind was already moving ahead,
Lucas POVThe silence after it disappeared did not feel like victory.I stood there for a few seconds, still holding Emily in my arms, my eyes fixed on the exact spot where the shadow had been just moments ago. The corridor looked normal again. Too normal. The cracks in the walls had stopped spreading, the air felt lighter, and the cold presence that had filled the space was gone. But deep inside me, something refused to settle. This was not over. Not even close.Emily’s weight shifted slightly against me, and I looked down at her. Her eyes were still open, but she looked drained, like everything inside her had been pulled thin.“You’re okay,” I said quietly, though I was not fully sure myself. She swallowed and nodded faintly. “It’s gone… but it didn’t feel like the end.”My jaw tightened. “I know.”She leaned her head lightly against my chest, her breathing uneven. I adjusted my grip and lifted her properly, carrying her without another word. She did not protest. That alone told me
Lucas POVFor a moment, I could not move.My body was ready to react, ready to pull her away, ready to do something—anything—but something held me in place. It was not fear. It was something else. Something deeper. The way Emily stood there, completely still, her hand pressed against that dark shape, it did not look like she was being attacked. It looked like she was… connected to it.And that thought terrified me more than anything else.“Emily,” I called again, my voice lower this time, controlled, but tense. She did not answer. The corridor trembled again, harder this time. The walls groaned as thin cracks spread across them like veins. The air felt thick, almost hard to breathe, like something was pressing against my chest. The guards from the other end of the hallway started shouting, but their voices sounded distant, like they were far away even though they were not.My eyes never left her.Her back was straight. Her hand was still raised. And that thing—That shadow—It was no
Lucas POVI stood there for a long time, just watching her sleep. The room was quiet, too quiet, and it made every thought in my head sound louder than it should. Emily’s breathing was steady, soft, almost comforting, but it did nothing to calm the storm building inside me. Clarisse’s words kept repeating in my mind, over and over again, like something I could not escape from. They want what they lost. That line alone was enough to keep sleep far away from me. Because if that was true, then this was no longer just a matter of protecting Emily from danger. It meant she was the center of something much darker, something that had already begun long before we even knew it existed.I ran a hand slowly over my face and exhaled, forcing myself to think clearly. Panic would not help. Fear would not help. I needed control. I had always relied on control, on knowing the next step before anyone else even realized there was a problem. But now… this situation was slipping into something I could no
Emily’s POVI never thought I’d end up sitting in a bar, of all places.I’d passed this street a dozen times back when I came to visit Lucas at the hospital, but I never once looked inside the glowing red doorway that now called to me. I wasn’t raised to drink. Back in school, I was the quiet girl—
EMILY’S POVThe moment the guards dragged me across the hallway, my body scraped against the cold floor. My arms throbbed where they gripped me, their fingers digging deep into my skin. I tried to twist, to pull away, and at least slow them down, but they handled me like a sack of grain.“Please,”
LUCAS’S POVThe day we left the hospital, the world outside looked brighter than I remembered. The sun was high, the air was warm, and birds chirped from the trees.I walked out of those hospital doors knowing something no Alpha should ever have to face: my time was almost up.Emily was ahead, talk
Lucas’s POVShe was gone before I could say anything else. And maybe it was for the best. Maybe if she hated me, it would be easier for her to move on when I wasn’t here anymore. That was what I told myself, anyway. But the ache in my chest said otherwise. When I returned to my ward, Chris and Kare
