SAPPHIRE

I expected him to rip out my heart there and then.

Every second that passed as I stood rooted to the floor was excruciating.

Like I was going to die any moment without warning.

As if things could not be worsened, the human lunged herself at him, her aim definite.

He grabbed her by the throat before she could even get close to him.

He looked at her in amusement “For a pathetic human, your audacity is surprising.”

Her face flushed red as she kicked her legs in the air, struggling to release herself from his grip.

If he didn’t let her go soon, she would die.

“P-please m-my lord, s-spare her, please!” My voice trembled as I pleaded on my knees.

He eyed me for a second and let her body drop to the floor.

She began to frantically gasp for air and cough, the boldness she embodied a moment ago had been blanketed by fear.

He immediately grabbed us by the arm and dragged us to the centre of the camp.

“Line up!” He commanded

The captives jerked up from the floor and stood aright.

He pointed at the human beside me “This human was bold enough to attempt to stab me. So let’s test how strong she really is,” He smirked and squatted to her level and whispered “let’s see how long you last”

Her blood shot eyes widened as he signaled three other soldiers in our direction.

“You,” he pointed at me “Rise”

I stood up quickly, my weak frame shaking terribly as tears shamelessly fell from my face.

He stood in front of me and grabbed my face harshly, I winced from the pain.

“If you take your eyes off for even a second, you’ll join her.” He warned.

The three soldiers began to rip her clothes off.

“No,no, NO!!! Get away from me!!!” She protested as they had their way with her in the most gruesome and gut wrenching manner.

Bile rose to my throat, but I could not look away. I could feel his eyes on me, watching me, waiting for me to make the mistake and cower.

And beneath the light of the torches, I finally saw her face.

She was the one whose father was killed by one of the soldiers.

And now, she would meet a more gruesome fate.

Her screams and screeches tore through the air and my heart.

My eyes bled for her and my knees shook beneath me, threatening to give up.

And then there was silence.

It was louder than her cries.

She was not moving. Her eyes had lost their light.

But that did not stop them from feasting till they were full.

They continued to defile her even in death.

“Obey and you won’t end up like her” his whisper caused deadly chills to run up my spine.

He faced the captives, “No one touches her body. If you do, you meet the same fate” He stated firmly and marched back to his tent.

When he was out of sight, I fell to my knees.

Why he didn’t drag me along? I don’t know. But I was grateful to the goddess he didn't.

Everyone acted like there wasn’t a corpse laying in front of us and resumed whatever task they were given beforehand.

But I couldn’t.

She was so foolishly stubborn. She had a drive I had not seen even in some wolves. She was a weak human and yet, she chose to fight, knowing fully well she would die.

Why?

I have not encountered many humans in my life, but I doubt they’re all like this - foolishly brave.

“I’m surprised you were spared. The goddess has favored you tonight” a male voice called out from behind me.

I did not turn to him, my eyes remained fixated on the bare lifeless human before me.

“You should go back to your station, before you end up like her” He spoke again and I paid him no heed.

I closed my eyes and clasped my hands together tightly. “Hail all mighty goddess, I beg you on behalf of this soul, grant her peace in the afterlife”

“Humans don’t belong in our afterlife, your prayer is pointless.” he deadpanned and sat right beside me.

“Out of polite formality, it must be done, “ I paused, eyeing her face intently “I didn’t even know her name.”

“And yet here you are, weeping over someone you barely even knew.” He said.

“That’s what happens when you have a heart.” I snapped

“And having a heart will get you killed. If you want to survive, think of yourself alone.” He retorted

“And Is that how the goddess made us? To be alone? To be so unkind to each other ? Is this how she designed us to be?” I questioned, my voice low.

He sighed “she’s the only one who can give you an answer”

We knelt there in silence, my heart heavy as I stared at her lifeless body.

“And just in case I’m the next to die, I’m bujok.” He said nonchalantly as he stretched out his hand.

“Sapphire.” I answered softly.

He raised his brow “why would they name you after a stone? Did your father work in the mines?”

“No, he said when he found me, he saw something in the sky - a sign from the goddess he would always say,” I chuckled, “Something that reminded him of the stone, sapphire” I said, a small smile grown on my face.

My father would tell me that story over and over again anytime I felt inadequate, incomplete.

He would tell me the greatest and most perfect gift the goddess ever gifted him, was me.

“Well my father was a bastard who took pleasure in tormenting me. He didn’t even think twice before giving me up, not that I expected other wise” He scoffed

“Fear can control us to do things we were not designed to do.” I whisper, turning to the corpse in front of me.

“I - “ He paused and abruptly knelt and bowed his head.

Why was he kneeling?

“Sapphire, kneel!” He urged, his forehead kissing the ground.

I looked around me and everyone else was kneeling.

What was going on? Was someone coming?

Before I knew what was happening, a huge slap threw me to the floor.

The world began to spin, and a scent hit my nose, one I know all too well.

Blood.

“How dare you raise your head when royalty approaches?” The soldier yelled.

Royalty?

Here? In the camp?

“I-I did-n’t know” my voice quivered.

He grabbed my hand violently and dragged me

“Please! Spare me! Please!” My cries reached deaf ears.

I did not attempt to struggle, it would be futile.

Suddenly he came to a stop, another soldier blocking his path “what did she do?”

“Sir! She showed no respect for the royal family.” He said firmly.

“I’ll punish her accordingly.” The soldier responded.

Once the other soldier left me to my fate, he squatted to my level and examined me carefully with his eyes.

Then he… smiled?

“It’s really you, you survived.”

CHAPTER NINE The rest of the day went by in a stressful blur. I never made the mistake of cleaning the west wing again. I should have known. Fewer servants were moving there, just a measly handful. I was beyond lucky that my foolishness hadn’t led me to my death. Who knows the punishment I would have received if I’d been caught by a guard, or worse-A royal. After our working hours every servant was expected to return to the court were we had gathered in the morning, then walk quietly back to the stables. I had learnt from another servant that the court was the slave's quarters, were we could gather without disgusting a royal by leaving our stench in the main hall. It was almost demeaning, but I knew all wolves were sensitive to scent, though my weakness had prevented me from noticing most of it.I couldn’t even imagine how sensitive a royal's nose would be.“You should rest while you can.” Bujok pulled me out of my thoughts as he sat on his pile of hay. He had taken quite some ti

SAPPHIREThe moment I saw him at the door the chains that were wrapped round my legs disappeared. The wolf stood at the door, his crimson eyes gazing intently into mine like a call.I moved before I could think. My feet carried me past Bujok’s side, past all the other sleeping captives. No one even flinched as I walked out of the stable, standing in front of the wolf.He bent his head low for me as I got closer, urging me to climb. I reached out to feel his fur, the mane thick and soft as I climbed, sitting to the side. I felt the muscle underneath me move as he walked off, leading me across the fields and trees of the palace. It was absolutely quiet as he carried me, the full moon high in the sky as the trees parted, and that was when I gasped at the sight of the stream in front of us. The rushing water looked like ink as it flowed, the full moon reflecting on it in scattered circles. It was so beautiful..“I have been waiting for you.” He said softly, gazing into my eyes as the moo

SAPPHIRE The dread in the atmosphere was painfully heavy. We were no better than deer walking into the arms of the hunters. The only difference was that they lived in the bliss of ignorance and we were too unfortunate to be ignorant. All we could do was to plead to the goddess that our deaths would be swift and painless.Four moons had set before we finally arrived to the palace. Once we reached the gates, they came to a halt. The gates before me were like monuments, titan like, and completely gold. The inlays on it had patterns that were too intricate for me to follow or even understand. There were soldiers at the gate, and some were in their wolf form. I lowered my gaze immediately, hearing them walk up to our carriage and speaking lowly to the soldier accompanying us, before calling out to another ahead as they cleared us.Suddenly the gates were opened, the gold catching lines of light from the sky. And I lost my breath at the sight before me. The exterior of the palace was b

SAPPHIRE His lifeless eyes bore into mine as I stood there, frozen in absolute fear. What exactly happened while I was unconscious??“The joy in my heart seeing that bastard’s head on a stake knows no bounds.” Bujok whispered beside me.“W-what did he do?” I asked as I forced my eyes away from his head.“I heard he disrespected the Alpha king.” He said, his eyes still on Hakil’s decapitated head on display.“The king was here??” I asked, my eyes widening. He turned to me, his brow raised, “Didn’t you mention you could sense aura?”“I can, I just couldn’t this time.” I muttered, looking away from him as my mind wandered. The alpha king came to the camp, and I could not even sense his presence. How was that even possible? When I heard Royal blood was approaching the camp, I never thought it would be the Alpha king. What was he doing here? From the stories I had heard, It was unlike the king to be in the presence of lowlifes… unless there was another reason none of us were aware of.

CHAPTER FIVE SAPPHIRE My eyes fluttered open, awakened by a song carried faithfully by the wind. The melody sounded so familiar, yet so strange, like I had only heard it once in passing. Like it was made for the ears of another. It wasn’t cold as I had remembered, the wind. This time it held a warmth I had only felt in the arms of my father. The goddess had blessed us with a full moon tonight. The light from the moon reflected on the surface of the river I stood in, the cool water rushing past my feet. Then I felt a presence behind me, but I was not overcome with fear. Within me, I knew who it was. I turned to face him, his silver fur glowing beneath the moonlight as his crimson eyes gazed at mine. He walked towards me slowly, my heart racing like I had just run a thousand miles. He stopped some steps away from me, and his eyes held a longing I had never seen. No one had ever looked at me that way before. And then his voice reached my ears, “I have searched for you for so

SAPPHIRE It seemed I had begun to hallucinate. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think he didn’t have it in mind to kill me. Or eat me. He reached out to touch my cheek and I flinched away in fear. “You must leave at once, before he gets here.” He said as he lifted me to my feet, his eyes scanning his surroundings. “What? Who?” I asked, my voice woven with confusion.“If he sees you like this, it would be disastrous.” He said, a certain dread lacing his voice. Why was he helping me? Or was he truly helping me? Or just deceitfully leading me to my ruin. He led me to a through the camp, his eyes actively surveying. “Where are you taking me??” I asked, my eyes gazing upon this stranger warily. He paused abruptly. I could have sworn on the moon his eyes turned pitch black. In that moment, his scent changed; he wasn’t a wolf. So what was he?? He turned to me, and his eyes reverted to the norm. I took a step away from him, my eyes refusing to look away from… whatever he was. “
