Chapter 160

Author: Gathered Light
Terrified by the look on Eugene's face, Penelope quickly blurted, "I lied!"

Gasping for breath, she met his wild eyes and cried out, "Gene, it was a lie! Jackie never called last night."

"Are you sure?" Eugene's rage-filled expression eased slightly.

Finally getting a chance to breathe, Penelope nodded quickly and tried to pry his hands off her shoulders. "Yes!"

Eugene withdrew his hands and warned her, "If Jackie finds out about us… I swear, I won't let you off easy."

She could tell he wasn't bluffing. If this last shred of pretense between him and Jacklyn were torn away, he'd undoubtedly blame her.

Still frightened by how Eugene had behaved earlier, she nodded obediently. "I-I understand. I'll never let Jackie know."

Eugene gave her one last look before walking out of the room.

The moment he closed the door, the meek expression on Penelope's face twisted into a sneer. Scoffing, she murmured, "You're the only one who thinks Jacklyn doesn't know anything."

Jacklyn answered frankly, "Ms. Lopez, like you said, my background is in design. I've never done any antique restoration. I'm afraid I wouldn't be the right person for that."She wasn't keen on taking on projects she wasn't confident about, especially not when it involved someone like Emily. With her, it paid to be careful."If you're just worried about the restoration, don't be. What I need is your eye for design," Emily replied. She lifted her head slowly, her gaze flicking briefly to the side. The woman standing nearby caught the signal right away. Without a word, she turned and retrieved a bright yellow velvet box from the table. With careful hands, she brought out the antique vase.Jacklyn rose from her seat, circled the table, and stopped beside the vase. The woman pointed to a flaw. "Ms. Stinson, the crack is right here."Jacklyn leaned in to examine the spot. It took a moment, but then she saw a hairline crack near the mouth of the vase.At that moment, Emily, who had s

Everyone in the private room knew exactly what was going on between Eugene and Penelope.Wade let out a chuckle. "Don't worry. The private rooms on this cruise ship are tucked away. Unless I drag Jacklyn here, there's no way she'd ever find it."He gave Eugene a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "I got you. Just relax. Jacklyn's never going to know."With that bit of assurance, Eugene finally allowed himself to unwind. Smiling, he didn't push Penelope away. Instead, he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close. The scent of her perfume and the softness of her skin worked like magic, lifting his mood instantly.Penelope took the opportunity to press herself even closer to his chest, clinging to him like a second skin. She lowered her gaze, but the spark of triumph in her eyes was impossible to miss.Once again, victory was hers.…Jacklyn was about to wash up when a crisp knock sounded at the door."Ms. Stinson, are you there?"She glanced at the clock. It was just shy of

Eugene looked ready to explode. He'd already swallowed his pride, but Liam still had to humiliate him right before everyone.Just then, Jacklyn rose, trying to defuse the tension. "Gene, it's okay even if we didn't get the luminous gemstone. There'll be other chances."She genuinely didn't mind losing the bid. Honestly, seeing Liam win it made her just as happy. She reached out, trying to guide Eugene back to his seat. But he flung her hand aside, his eyes locked on Liam.He sneered and taunted, "Mr. Robertson, you kept insisting Jackie was your friend, and yet here you are, doing everything in your power to win the luminous gemstone. You know full well I'm trying to win it for her. And you still call yourself a friend?"No matter what Eugene said, Liam remained as composed and unruffled as ever. It was plain to anyone watching that he hadn't given Eugene's words so much as a second thought. After Eugene's angry outburst, he turned to see Jacklyn standing quietly, her lips presse

Emily held the microphone with a warm smile, eyes sweeping across the crowd. "Thank you, all, for being here tonight. The auction rules are the same as always—the highest bidder wins. "But this time, every penny raised will go directly to Project Hope to help build schools for underprivileged children."The moment Emily appeared, Penelope's presence finally made sense to Jacklyn.Still, Emily's idea wasn't half bad. It was better for the money to go to Project Hope than to line some capitalist's pockets."I'll keep this brief. The auction starts now with an opening bid of one million dollars."As Emily's voice faded, bid paddles began rising across the hall in scattered bursts. Jacklyn reached for hers, but Eugene gently stopped her with a touch."Let me handle this, Jackie. I've been waiting for the right moment to give you something, and now that there's finally something you love, just let me do this."Before she could respond, he raised his paddle without hesitation."Five

As soon as Eugene finished speaking, the chandelier dimmed abruptly, plunging the entire hall into darkness."What's going on?" Jacklyn asked, her voice tight as she instinctively turned to Eugene. He reached for her hand, his fingers brushing over it in comfort. "Don't be afraid."But it wasn't the darkness that unsettled Jacklyn. It was Eugene's touch that made her want to pull away.A moment later, the lights flared back on, and the rich swell of an orchestra filled the hall. Dancers began filing onto the stage in succession. As the music flowed, they started their performance.Jacklyn seized the moment to pull her hand free and lazily propped her chin on her palm."So it's dancing," she said, unimpressed.Eugene leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to a murmur. "The real surprise comes later."She wasn't interested. A dance performance wasn't going to blow her away. With a half-hearted nod, she humored him.But then her eyes drifted across the stage and stopped. Her brow

"Didn't you always love digging through trash? That's your thing?" Jacklyn arched an eyebrow and glanced at the trash can below. "Well, there you go. It's right there. Pick it up."Penelope's face twisted with fury. She jabbed a finger at Jacklyn, her voice stripped of any pretense. "Jacklyn, you're saying Gene's dirty? How dare you? You really think I won't go straight to Lydia with this?"Jacklyn's eyes narrowed into amused slits. Watching Penelope lose it sent a vicious thrill down her spine."Did I actually say that?" she purred. "Or do you have any proof I did?"Penelope was speechless. She opened her mouth, then shut it again, swallowing whatever she'd been about to say. With a glare full of pent-up fury, she spun around and stormed off.The moment she was gone, Jacklyn's appetite vanished. The thought of spending the next two days stuck on the cruise with Penelope made her regret agreeing to come.Just then, Eugene caught sight of her blank, distant expression. He'd been
