Chapter 2

Author: Fiona Fenwick
[He saw the pendant! He's finally going to claim her!]

[It's over! Our girl's suffering is finally over!]

[Take your sister home, Dorian! Don't let that impostor steal her place!]

I could not stop my fingers from tightening on the hem of my clothes. Bitterness and a fragile thread of hope churned together in my chest.

Perhaps what my brother said in our past life, about how he should have never brought me home, had only been spoken in anger. Perhaps this time, he would still take me back.

The hope had barely surfaced before it was crushed.

Dorian's gaze swept over Portia's pale face at his side. He tightened his grip on the pendant and struck me hard across the cheek.

Half my face went numb. His voice was freezing.

"You dared to steal something that belongs to my sister?

"If I hadn't caught you today, would you have kept this pendant and used it to cling to us?"

His eyes were razor-sharp, but when he turned and tossed the pendant to Portia, they softened into something warm and indulgent.

"Keep the pendant safe, Portia. I won't have someone with bad intentions stealing it again."

The whiplash between cruelty and tenderness drove through my chest like an ice pick.

The comments exploded.

[Have you lost your mind?! That's your real sister!]

[You fool. You're going to regret this!]

I had not wanted to cry, but the comments’ words of comfort undid me, and the tears spilled faster than I could stop them.

A drop of blood from the corner of my mouth landed on the chilblains across my hand, and the sting traveled through every nerve of my body until my fingertips shook.

They called Dorian a fool. They said he could not recognize his own sister. They said he would live to regret it.

Only I knew the truth. He was no fool. He knew exactly who I was, and he would never regret a thing.

Everything from our past life unfolded before my eyes.

The first time Dorian and Lucian came to the orphanage, I had not known I was the one they were searching for. I had sat among all the girls of the right age, eyes red and stinging, secretly praying that I might be the lost daughter of the General's household.

In the orphanage, every child's deepest wish was the same. We all wanted a family.

In the end, the headmistress had led her favorite forward. She had taken Portia by the hand and presented her to the two men.

The moment Portia, spotless and well-kept, threw herself into Dorian's arms, my eyes had burned with envy. The comments had scrolled in a frenzy, insisting that I was the General's true daughter, and I had found the courage to rush forward and pull out my pendant to expose her.

Once they confirmed it was genuine, Dorian had wiped the dirt from my face with a clean handkerchief. He pushed Portia aside when she tried to explain herself, pulled me into his arms, and looked at me with so much anguish it hurt.

"Let me take you home."

That single sentence had brought tears streaming down my face.

For the three years that followed, I truly had a family, just as the comments had promised. My brother was a general, cold and unyielding by nature since boyhood, yet he was unfailingly gentle with me.

He remembered my favorite pastries without being told and stood up for me whenever I was wronged. Lucian, my fiancé, was even more devoted.

On our wedding day, he had held my hand at the altar and sworn before everyone present that he would take no other wife in this lifetime.

However, that happiness shattered quickly.

The day I nearly died in childbirth, Lucian brought Portia home. He knelt beside my bed and told me he wanted to take her as his second wife.

When Dorian learned of it, he drew his sword and wounded Lucian on the spot. He seized Portia and vowed to send her to an estate so far away she would never set foot in my life again.

Two weeks later, Portia was back. Dorian had changed, too.

He told me Portia deserved pity and that he wanted to take her in as his ward. He even asked me to let Lucian marry her as well.

Portia stood just behind him, her eyes bright with challenge.

I looked at these two people who had once guarded me as though I were something precious, and all I felt was a cold, hollow disbelief.

I dragged my weakened body upright and slapped Portia as hard as I could across the face.

[Third Person’s Point-of-View.]The snow had started again without anyone noticing. Icy flakes struck Dorian and Lucian’s faces as they stood on the stone steps outside the gates, looking around with nothing left to see.Regret swallowed them like a rising tide. They wanted to force their way back in, but they knew it would change nothing. The girl they had thrown away was never going to turn around. Then, without warning, lines of unfamiliar writing shimmered into the air before them.It was the same kind of text that had appeared around Liora, the scrolling comments. They sensed the story was over and knew they would vanish soon, but before they faded, they drifted deliberately into the two men's line of sight and left words that cut like needles.[You fools!][Portia died in your past life because Duke Helford withheld the antidote when she failed to deliver the intelligence he wanted. He let the poison kill her on purpose.][Liora had nothing to do with it!][And what did y

Lucian reached for my cheek as he spoke. I turned my face away, and the warmth drained from behind his eyes. He forced a pained smile and kept going."In our past life, I never should have shut myself away in a monastery over guilt that was never real. I never should have left you to spend the rest of your life alone."This time, I won't make the same mistake. For the rest of my days, I'll stay by your side. I'll watch our children grow up with you. Please, Lia."Dorian watched me, and I could see the moment he remembered. The way I had looked just before I died in our past life, gaunt and frail, aged far beyond my years.Only now did it seem to hurt him.His voice had gone rough. "I'm the one who failed you, Lia. I was blind. I let Portia poison everything I believed."I will never take her side again. I will never let you suffer again. Please, come home with us."They spoke one after another, offering repentance and promises that had arrived far too late, trying to pull me out

At that moment, Dorian and Lucian could no longer lie to themselves. The cold that flooded through them was like ice water poured straight through their chests. Even breathing hurt."She really was using us."Dorian murmured the words to himself. The documents in his hand were crumpled nearly to shreds. Lucian stood beside him, his face drained of color. The evidence from this life and the memories of the last combined until denial was no longer possible. The guilt they had carried across two lifetimes, the desperate need to make amends, had been nothing from start to finish but a carefully orchestrated lie. While both men sat drowning in regret, a servant hurried in with a gold-lettered invitation, his voice tight with alarm."General, Chancellor, the Duke's estate has sent word. Duke Prescott says he has found the love of his life and intends to hold the wedding today. You are both invited to attend.""Today?"Dorian's head snapped up. His stomach dropped. The image of me lea

In this life, they had poured everything into making amends with Portia and had never thought to assign the shadow guards to me. That was precisely why the guards had been free to conduct a thorough investigation and uncover what had been hiding in plain sight. They knew their shadow guards were meticulous. Anything they reported could be trusted without question. However, that stubborn thread of attachment to what they believed Portia had meant to them in their past life made the truth almost impossible to swallow.Dorian waved a hand, his voice heavy. "Investigate further. Verify every detail. I want no room for doubt."Lucian said nothing, but the slight dip of his head signaled agreement. His fingers traced the edge of the desk without thought, and the weight pressing down on him felt like stone. After the shadow guard withdrew, Portia sent a servant to invite them for an outing in the city. On any other day, they would have agreed without hesitation. Tonight, with the shadow

After the scandal, the late King had issued a decree in his fury. Every member of the peerage, regardless of sex, was to be marked on the arm at birth as proof of their virtue.Duke Prescott had spent years living as a well-known wastrel and libertine. How could his mark still be there? He seemed to read the question on my face. A hint of self-consciousness crept into his expression, but his voice was low and steady."The Crown Princess's household used to hold enormous power. While my uncle was alive, he saw my mother's family as a threat. If I hadn't put on the act of a useless rake, they would have treated me as a target. I might not have survived."He raised his eyes to mine, and there was nothing in them but sincerity."I've been in love with you since the moment I saw you at that banquet in our past life."I'm showing you this because I don't want you to misunderstand me. I don't want you to think I brought you along on a whim."The new King has taken the throne. I stand w

Dorian and Lucian both froze where they stood. Their lips moved as though they still had something to say, but Duke Prescott's warm voice reached me first."Liora."I turned at once and walked quickly toward his outstretched hand. The moment his fingers closed firmly around mine, the warmth of his palm chased the cold from my fingertips. It chased away the last trace of longing I had carried for anything behind me.I did not look back. I climbed into the carriage, stepped over the piled snow on the running board, and let the curtain fall. The two figures standing frozen in the snow disappeared from sight. The carriage rolled over the snow and left Dorian and Lucian far behind.Dorian clenched his fists. His body was rigid beneath his dark cloak. Lucian took a step forward on instinct, ready to follow, but Dorian seized his wrist and pulled him back."If she won't accept our goodwill, let her go."His voice was ice, but something unsteady flickered behind his eyes, a disquiet he
