Zahra's POV
I’m caught just a second off guard. Damn it. No clean break. I get boxed in behind Torin, Daxton, and Cala. FML.
Torin sets the pace early, it's strong and fast, but it’s off my usual rhythm. Were still out on the grass of the field, and I spot my opportunity before we enter the tree line where the trail narrows. I surge forward. Daxton and Cala both flinch as I fly past them. Torin clocks me and responds immediately, matching my pace with those massive strides of his.
Fine.
The path narrows as we dive into the trees. It’s winding, but not tight. The corners are wide enough we don’t need to slow down much. I fall into my comfort zone quickly, Torin matching my pace even though I’m taking almost double the steps.
Our footfalls sync with the rhythm of the wind. His breat
Zahra's POV“Is there a problem here?”A deep voice cuts through the tension like a knife. I already know who it is before I turn. Every cell in my body settles the moment he gets close.Jasper steps between the three bitches and me, his arm slipping around my shoulders like he’s been doing it forever.“You good, Smalls?” he asks, and I nod, relief blooming in my chest.Aiden appears on my other side and wraps me in a solid hug.Astrid’s voice sharpens. “You see? You’re not even trying to hide it. You’re disgusting.”I lean my head against Aiden’s chest and let out a long, exhausted sigh.“What’s up, Zar?” he murmurs, but I’m not looking at him. I glance toward Tobias instead — who now looks like he’s about to burst into flames.
Zahra's POVI devour my lunch, still feeling the weight of a lot of eyes on me for most of it. Towards the end of the meal, Zanthe stretches awake — thank the goddess, or shifting later would’ve been awkward. There’s a lot of banter and chatter at our table. It’s clearly a bit of a reunion for some of them. Nicholas seems to know all the instructors well, and I guess as a graduate of the academy himself, he must know them from alumni events and the like. They all remain sitting and chatting after finishing. I glance at my watch and see I’ve still got another hour and a half before sparring. I think I’m going to lie down — Zanthe can’t do much about exhaustion, and I feel like I’m dragging.'I'm going to rest a bit in my room.' I link Tobias. He looks at me,
Zahra's POVI head straight upstairs and hop into the shower, somehow, I manage to navigate the control panel and I cranking the temperature as high as it’ll go — it hits just right on my sore body. Zanthe is working overtime on repairs. My legs feel brand new already, but my arms are still aching, and she’s clearly getting tired. I need to feed her.I grab a clean set of uniform, leaving the wet, muddy one in the bathroom, and pull on a fresh pair of trainers. With my damp hair braided down my back, I head downstairs as fast as my sore body will let me.Extra tables have been added to the dining room to accommodate all the guests, making the space feel cramped — especially with all the new colours.I grab a tray and load it up: steak, chicken, potatoes, broccoli. Coffee, electrolyte drink, and water. I need fuel — pr
Zahra's POV'Goddess, you are amazing,' Tobias says in my head, and he sounds proud as hell.'No one has ever finished this course on the first assessment.'I sit up, wobbling. I find him in the crowd, smug as ever. He and Nicholas are both grinning like the Cheshire fucking cat. Then Maddox and Vale stride toward me. My gut twists. Maddox looks furious, eyebrows drawn so tight his face could shatter glass.Shit. Am I in trouble? Should I not have laid down? Was that disrespectful?Maddox grabs my shoulders, pulls me upright. His hands are huge and solid and weirdly gentle. He stares at me hard, his dark eyes flicking across my face like he’s looking for something.Vale speaks first. “That, Miss Larkin, was very impressive.”Maddox doesn’t look away. “We get strong applicants all the time. But this morning?” He shakes his head, still holding my gaze. “We thought there had been some sort of error. We doubted—hell, I doubted—a fourteen-year-old could have the stats you had on your appli
Zahra's POVFuck me, I’m next.I step up to the line and take a deep breath, chancing another glance at the crowd before Maddox calls, “Go!”As expected, the beam is slick and steep. I stay low, driving my legs hard to power up it. I make it—barely. I’d hate to do that in the rain though. The balance beam’s a breeze in comparison to the rest of what's to come, and I fly across without thinking twice. The scramble net holes are bigger than I’m used to, but still an easy climb. At the top of the platform, I pause, assessing the top rope. There’s a ripple of laughter from the crowd, and my hackles rise. ‘Yeah? Watch this, fuckers.'I jump up and climb the support post, and grab onto the top rope.Instead of going sideways like I did on the
Zahra's POVInstructor Maddox steps his massive bulk forward alongside Vale. His voice is deep enough to carry across the entire field without him needing to shout. “Cadets. Now that you are all recovered, you will face the obstacle course. This will challenge your physical strength, balance, adaptability, and resourcefulness. You will be marked on the number of zones completed, and in the event of a tie, how fast you completed them. How you complete each zone is up to you—however, your feet are not allowed to touch the ground once you start the green course, until after the plunge pool. If you touch down at any point on the course before then, or if you fall into the catch net, you are immediately finished. Is that clear?” “Yes, sir,” we all respond in unison. He turns without another word and heads off toward the base of the course. The spectators stay put—clearly still with a perfect view from the stands.“The green course is clearly marked,” Maddox calls over his shoulder, gestur
