Chapter 15

Josh's POV

I stood in my driveway for a long moment, staring at the broken glass scattered across the concrete. My hands were still shaking—not from fear, but from the adrenaline crash. The whole encounter had lasted maybe three minutes, but it felt like a lifetime.

The cut on my cheek stung as I finally made my way to the front door, fishing my keys from my pocket with fingers that felt clumsy and foreign. Everything felt surreal, like I was moving through thick water.

Inside, I headed straight to my home office. Thank God I kept a backup phone in my desk drawer—an old habit from my early business days when losing communication could cost thousands. My fingers moved mechanically as I powered it on and started making calls.

"Bank of America? Yes, this is Josh Anderson. Account number 4471..." The process was tedious but necessary. Block the cards, freeze the accounts, change the passwords on anything linked to my stolen phone. Each call felt like building a wall between mys

Chapter 18Zara's POVI stormed into Josh's office without knocking, my fury barely contained. He looked up from his computer, his face immediately shifting from calm to concerned when he saw my expression."Zara? What's wrong?""What's wrong?" I slammed my hands down on his desk. "You gave MY project to Katy. The Nexus project I've been working on for weeks!"Josh's face went pale. "What are you talking about? I didn't—""Don't lie to me, Josh! Henderson & Associates called me yesterday. They said the transfer came directly from your office.""Zara, I swear to you, I never authorized any transfer." He stood up, moving around his desk toward me. "Someone else must have—"The office door burst open behind me. "Josh, I need to talk to you about the Nexus—" Katy stopped mid-sentence when she saw me. "Oh. Zara. I didn't know you were here.""Perfect timing," I said, turning to face her. "I was just asking Josh why he gave you my project."Katy's eyes flickered between Josh and me, and I c

Chapter 16Zara's POVI woke up to the sound of keys jingling at the front door. Josh's arm was wrapped around me, and I realized we were still on the couch, both of us barely dressed. I was in my bra and panties, and Josh had his trousers on but no shirt."Zara!" Green's voice rang out cheerfully as she walked through the door. "I'm home and I brought Chinese—" She stopped dead in her tracks, taking in the scene before her.I felt my face burn with embarrassment as I scrambled to cover myself with Josh's shirt. "Green! I can explain—""Honey, no need to explain anything," Green laughed, setting down her bags. "You're with your man. I get it. Just maybe next time use the bedroom? The couch is where I eat my cereal."Josh was trying not to laugh beside me, which only made me more mortified."I'm just going to my room and pretend I didn't see anything," Green called over her shoulder as she disappeared down the hallway. "But next time, maybe hang a sock on the door or something!""Oh my

Chapter 16Zara's POVMy heart was pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat. "They found him? Actually found the person behind all this?"Josh's face was grim as he held the phone. "Marcus, are you absolutely certain about this?""Positive. The trail leads directly to one person. I'm sending you the address now."When Josh hung up, I grabbed his arm. "Josh, what if this is a trap? What if whoever this is actually wanted us to find them?""What do you mean?""Think about it. Someone smart enough to set up shell companies and coordinate multiple attacks... would they really leave such an obvious trail?" My mind was racing. "What if they wanted your security team to find this information?"Josh was quiet for a moment, considering. "You might be right. But Zara, if we don't try, this cycle never ends. We'll always be looking over our shoulders, waiting for the next attack.""Then I'm coming with you.""Absolutely not." His voice was firm. "You're staying right here in the hospital wh

Chapter 13 Josh's POVI watched Zara stare at her phone, the color draining from her face as she read the threatening message again. Most people would panic, call the police, maybe even leave town. But I wasn't most people."Give me your phone," I said calmly, extending my hand."Josh, maybe we should just ignore it—""Zara." My voice carried the authority I used in boardrooms when million-dollar deals were on the line. "Give me your phone."She handed it over reluctantly. I scrolled to the unknown number, memorizing it, then pulled out my own phone and dialed."Marcus? It's Josh Anderson. I need you to trace a number immediately." I rattled off the digits while Zara watched with wide eyes. "Full background on whoever owns it. I want to know what they had for breakfast this morning.""Josh, who are you calling?" Zara whispered."My security team," I replied, then returned to the call. "Twenty-four hour surveillance on Zara Williams starting now. And Marcus? I want them invisible but

Chapter 13Zara's POVI stared at my adoptive parents, my mind struggling to process their presence in my office. The last time I'd seen them, they'd thrown the truth about my adoption in my face like it meant nothing."What situation?" I asked, though I had a sinking feeling I already knew.My mother's lips pursed in that familiar disapproving way. "Don't play dumb, Zara. We know about your... condition.""My condition?" I repeated, my voice rising. "You mean my pregnancy?""Exactly." My father leaned forward, his expression stern. "Imagine our surprise when we heard through the grapevine that you're expecting a child. After everything we've done for you, you didn't think to inform us?"The audacity of their words hit me like a slap. "After everything you've done for me?" I stood up abruptly, my chair rolling back. "Are you serious right now?""We raised you, Zara," my mother said coldly. "Fed you, clothed you, put a roof over your head for twenty-eight years—""Stop." The word came
