Chapter 3

Author: Chubby Mushroom
What a sick joke.

My beloved husband vowed to have me jailed.

I swallowed the shooting pain and watched as he returned to his office to speak to his colleagues.

"Where is that woman? I need to settle the score with her."

It seemed like it finally occurred to him to look for me, but that was only because he wanted to avenge Reya.

His colleague seemed taken aback by this and darted shifting glances at the computer.

There was a video playing on the screen. It was footage of my corpse being removed from the scene.

The firefighters present at the scene were doubled over and retching while trying to secure whatever belongings I had that could be recovered.

Although everything else had been burned to ashes, the skeleton of my diamond wedding ring was still clung to my charred fingerbone. Luther was the one who had put it on my finger.

My heart throbbed with pain while I leaned into his ear to remind him, "Look. Look at me. That’s the wedding ring you gave me. Since the moment you put it on, I have never taken it off. I wore it faithfully for five years…"

If I could, I would scoop the ashes in the footage and tell him it contained the only ultrasound picture of his child.

Unfortunately, all he did was swipe a disinterested glance at the screen before asking which hospital I had been admitted to. It seemed to me like I meant nothing to this man whom I had loved for the last decade.

Nothing could describe the immeasurable sadness I felt.

His colleague answered nervously, "Haven’t you heard? We couldn’t save her from that fire. She died on the scene…"

Luther exploded with rage upon hearing this, "She took you out for lunch a few times, didn’t she? How dare you cover for her with these lies? It doesn’t get any more immature than this!"

He became very upset and began to insult me.

"How do you expect me to believe that all the firefighters who showed up couldn’t rescue just one person? I can’t believe she would get my colleagues to make up this pathetic lie to fake her death, it’s disgusting!"

As much as it hurt me, I was not surprised by his reaction. I understood the nature of his work and never requested to take time out of his hectic schedule.

Once, I got into a serious car accident and lost a lot of blood. My father was frantic and told Luther he had to take a day off to visit me at the hospital.

After I was attended to in the hospital, I forced myself to get up despite my weakened state so that I could call Luther.

Since I did not want to get in the way of his work, I made something up. "Sorry, I missed you and was worried you would be seeing someone else behind my back. That’s why I had my dad test you."

Luther was very upset by this and held the incident over my head for a long time after that.

His colleagues were frightened by his sharp reaction and decided to keep their mouths shut.

When he returned to Reya's ward, he angrily relayed the situation to her.

Reya held his hand tenderly and told him what he wanted to hear, "You’re right. There’s no way all those firefighters couldn’t manage to save Amaranth."

Luther was glad to hear this and doubled down. "Amaranth crossed the line this time. I’m going to make sure she pays for this!"

Reya took Luther's arm and advised him, "Maybe she’s just upset because you rescued me first. I think you should talk to her. She only spilled gasoline on the couch to scare me. I’m sure she didn’t set it on fire intentionally, and she didn’t mean to hurt me."

It was a lie. She was the one who injured herself to frame me. She was the one who committed arson.

And yet, there was nothing I could do to prove her wrong.

Luther became distressed and embraced her tightly. "The only reason she can walk all over you is because you are too gentle for the world."

He glowered upon mentioning me. "I know what she’s like. She’s a very jealous person, always suspicious of me and sensitive. I’m sure she has it in her head that you have been trying to seduce me. That’s why she takes it out on you. Just thinking about it makes me angry."

Reya made a show of being benevolent. "I have never blamed her for any of that. I just hope she’s fine."

Luther sneered, "Oh, I’m sure she’s fine. This is only part of her usual antics. One time, she got her dad to lie to me and tell me she suffered from severe blood loss after a car accident. Thankfully, I found out it was nothing but a lie. I almost missed an important drill because of her!"

The sharp spite in his voice made me shiver.

If only he had extended a hand toward me that day, that beam would not have collapsed on me, and my child would not have burned to death with me.

"This is what you did to Amaranth, and now I will make sure you suffer the same death!"Luther spread gasoline everywhere. The moment Reya sniffed the distinctive and sharp smell of gasoline, she wrapped herself tightly around his foot."Luther, are you insane? It’s me, Reya! The girl you love the most!"It was the wrong thing to say because it provoked him even further. His expression turned from blank to a hideous scowl. He glared at her vehemently, then grabbed her hair and roared in her ears."The one I love the most is Amaranth! She is the only one I love! Don’t you dare run your mouth, you disgusting woman! Think about how Amaranth will feel if she hears this! I will not let anyone hurt her feelings!"Reya was too powerless to fight him off. Upon realizing that Luther had gone mad, she began to laugh rabidly as well. "Luther, haven’t you realized nobody has hurt her feelings more than you have? She must hate you even in her last moments. She would never forgive you even if

When I listened to Luther’s agonizing cries, I felt a whirlpool of conflicting emotions inside me.There was a saying that one only learned the value of what they have after they lost. It was true. Now that things had come to this point, I could no longer hug Luther and offer him comfort in this time of crisis.I watched helplessly as his tears soaked the carpet. I sat next to him, knowing there was nothing I could do for him.Luther cried until his eyes became frayed with red and his throat began to lose its voice. That did not stop him from howling in pain.He began to scramble around the house with trembling hands to look for everything I had ever used as well as the clothes I used to wear. Finally, he wrapped his arms tightly around my pillow and fell asleep on my side of the bed. When he woke up the next day, it seemed as if he had lost his senses and barely knew how to walk.He piled up the clothes I used to wear and bundled up all my medical records. He lay on top of them

Before I confronted Reya on that fateful day, I had already learned my lesson from being framed in the past. I made a point of installing a hidden camera in the room in advance. After the fire, the officials did everything in their power to uncover the truth behind the incident.Luther played the video while trembling the entire time. The footage clearly showed Reya shoving me to the ground and issuing threats, "Don't think you’re all that just because you are pregnant with Luther’s baby. Luther is going to choose me in the end. He won’t want some old hag like you."After that, she unscrewed the can of gasoline she brought and splashed it everywhere.I grabbed her in a fit of panic and pleaded with her not to do anything reckless. She stomped on my leg triumphantly. "Who do you think Luther is going to save first when I start a fire? You, or me?"Before I could even react, the madwoman produced a lighter and proceeded to light the edge of the rug on fire. Then, she snatched my p

Luther embraced Reya, whom he thought was being victimized. He started to cry out dramatically, "Ever since you two separated us in the past, I had no choice but to treat Reya as a sister! We are both innocent. Amaranth is evil. She is the one complicating things!"Mrs. Ainge observed the way Reya continued to feign innocence to earn cheap sympathy and could not stand it anymore. She revealed the truth she had kept hidden for ages, "Did you truly think the reason we kept you from being with her was because we did not approve of dating when you were young?"She was trembling with rage when she jabbed a finger at Reya. "You think we wouldn’t be happy for you if you found someone that you liked? I’ll tell you what truly happened!"One day, we were hoping to bring Reya a present and encourage her to date you. That was when we chanced upon her entering a clinic with another man. When she came out again, she looked very frail."Mrs. Ainge felt like she had finally lifted a weight off her

It was as if his feet had been glued to the entrance.A wave of silence descended upon him. He clenched his teeth and slowly retreated backward while yelping, "Is this another one of Amaranth’s tricks? How far is she going to go?"Mrs. Ainge was furious at the sight of Luther trying to back away. She could not hold back anymore and seized him by the ear. "You scum! Have you no shame at all? What will it take for you to apologize for what you’ve done?"Mrs. Ainge forced Luther in front of me.Meanwhile, my father clenched his fists tightly to resist the urge to beat Luther into a pulp. He proceeded to pull away the cloth draped over my dead body.Luther reluctantly looked at the object on the table. He immediately noticed the contorted, mummified figure that reeked of the smell of burnt flesh. It was not what he expected to see. His reaction was a mix of horror and complete astonishment. He stared at the terrifying figure from head to toe with his eyes wide open. Then, he began t

Mr. Ainge roared in a deafening voice.Luther was so shocked that he had his hand over his mouth and looked completely disheveled. After a few seconds, he forced himself to calm down.“Dad, why are you lying to me like Amaranth’s father?”Mr. Ainge glared viciously at Reya before dragging Luther out of the room. He hissed at him, “How dare you even bring up Amaranth's father? You'd better get on your knees and beg him for forgiveness!”Reya hurriedly followed after them upon noting the interaction.Even after they got into the car, she still brazenly pressed her weight against him and assured him, “Luther, don’t panic. You mentioned your parents were very fond of Amaranth. Maybe they were trying to back her up!”Upon hearing the suggestion, he calmed down slightly and agreed, “You’re right. That must be it. Amaranth has crossed the line this time. I can’t believe she would get my parents involved in this just to get my attention."Then, he began muttering to himself, "The fire w
