Chapter 1

“You were the one who went overboard with matchmaking two months ago. The baby was never meant to come into the world in the first place.”

The moment Dominic Fletcher finished, Sabine Mercer slapped him hard across the face.

“If you dare say anything of that sort in front of Elaine, I’ll never forgive you for as long as I live!

“Her mother died in childbirth, and her father met death to save your life. Elaine loves children. I only wanted her to be happy…”

The boulder must’ve left a nasty cut on my back.

Now it throbbed with a searing pain that spread to my chest.

I gritted my teeth as tears quickly spilled over.

In the seven years I had been with Dominic, he had never once touched me.

Not until two months ago, when he staggered home drenched in alcohol.

That was the first time he had ever looked at me with such passionate, intoxicating desire.

Only because he had mistaken me for Sabine.

When I learned I was pregnant, I had been so overwhelmed with joy that I spent the whole night awake.

But the truth was ruthless.

I was the only parent looking forward to the arrival of our child.

“I don’t wanna keep sneaking around behind Elaine’s back. I’m just so exhausted…”

The moment Sabine finished her sentence, Dominic pulled her into a tight, frantic embrace, his voice trembling uncontrollably.

“Sabine, if you ever dare pull another disappearing act like you did three years ago, I swear I’ll end my life right then and there.”

I froze.

Three years ago, Sabine had gone abroad under the guise of negotiating a business partnership, vanishing for quite some time.

During that exact stretch of time, I noticed Dominic’s eyes were bloodshot every single day.

In the dead of night, he would slip away to hide in the bathroom and weep in secret.

At the time, I foolishly thought he was simply aching with empathy for my own pain.

Looking back now, it was nothing more than my own pathetic self-delusion.

They whispered a few more words with lowered heads until Sabine grew so angry she tried to turn and walk away.

Dominic suddenly cupped the back of her head, pulling her into a fierce, desperate kiss.

As the lovers lost themselves in passion, a violent wave of nausea brought on by betrayal and humiliation battered my mind.

I doubled over, unable to relieve myself.

It felt as if my heart were being torn open.

And yet, I couldn’t bring myself to hate either of them.

The moment they noticed me staring, both Dominic and Sabine froze in shock.

Sabine was the first to react.

With bloodshot eyes, she rushed into the room and grasped my hands tightly.

“Elaine, you’re finally awake…”

Gazing at my flattened belly, a flicker of guilt washed over her face.

“You’re both still young… There’s still plenty of time…”

Dominic stepped into the room with heavy, sluggish footsteps.

Bandages wrapped around his hands, and his face was covered in fresh cuts and bruises.

With awkward precision, he opened the thermal container on the bedside table, carefully ladling out a bowl of warm soup.

He then gently brushed the stray hairs from my forehead, placed a tissue across my chest, and meticulously adjusted the incline of the bed.

He then blew on every spoonful, cooling the soup before offering it to me.

Just as he had done every single day and night over the past seven years.

When it came to taking care of me, his devotion was unmatched as ever.

Despite the fact that the woman he truly loved was pushing him away.

Fresh tears spilled over before the ones I shed earlier could dry, dripping into the soup.

Dominic’s fingers stiffened for a second.

He quickly pulled out a napkin and wiped the tears from my cheeks.

Sabine tapped Dominic on the arm, forcing a tight, awkward smile.

“Look at you making a fool of yourself. It’s embarrassing.

“You two survived a near-death ordeal. Only good fortune from now on.

“Take good care of my bestie. If she sheds another tear, I will make your life a living hell for as long as I live.”

Dominic glanced at her from the corner of his eye, his face cold and silent.

Watching them try so hard to put on a show, exchanging anxious glances as they did, I felt as though a bucket of ice water had been dumped over me.

It was only now that I realized just how terrible their acting really was.

I had been the biggest fool on earth, never once noticed the burning passion in their eyes.

A week later, Dominic set about arranging my funeral. On the day of the funeral, Sabine hardly took a step outside the memorial hall. She kept gazing at my portrait, whispering non-stop apologies.“Elaine, are you doing well over there? Does your back still hurt? Are you cold?“I’m so sorry. Your death is on me.”Few relatives and friends came to offer their condolences, leaving the vast memorial hall mostly silent and desolate.Time trickled slowly away.Another week passed.Word came from the police that the suspect who had robbed and murdered me had been successfully apprehended and brought to justice. The moment Sabine learned the news, her body shook violently.Throwing caution to the wind, she rushed out the front door, desperately eager to confront the criminal in person, to demand justice for me, and to fight him with her very life.Dominic couldn’t stop her.Distraught and unseeing, she bolted into the middle of the road.A speeding driver was unable to swerve in time. The scr

The officers looked understanding.“Our condolences. If you could follow us back to the precinct for the identification.”Sabine bit her lower lip until it was raw, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. All through the drive to the precinct, the interior of the car remained silent as death.Sitting in the back seat, Sabine trembled uncontrollably from head to toe, muttering continuously under her breath.“It’s just a dream.“A bad dream, that’s all.“When I wake up, Elaine will be waiting safely at home.”When they reached the precinct, the heavy door of the mortuary loomed directly ahead.A frigid chill seeped out through the narrow gap in the doorway.Sabine’s feet seemed pinned to the floor, unable to lead her another step forward.“I’m not going in.”Her voice quivered. “Elaine’s not in there. She’s definitely back at home waiting for us.”The officer gently pushed the door open.A plain white sheet covered my body. The sheet was slowly pulled back and Sabine caught sight of my face

Time trickled away bit by bit.Dominic helped Sabine over to the sofa, sitting her down before pouring her a glass of warm water.According to the law, a missing person’s report required twenty-four hours to pass before it could be filed. From the moment of yesterday night’s phone call, not enough time had elapsed. The waiting hours were pure, excruciating agony in every single minute and second.Sabine was on edge, unable to settle down for even a moment. She picked up her phone repeatedly, dialing my number over and over again.Yet through the earpiece came only that same frozen, mechanical prompt announcing the phone was turned off. With every repetition of that prompt, the color drained a fraction more from her face. She kept muttering under her breath:“She has an unhealed wound on her back… what if the infection flares up…”She clutched her phone tightly with both hands, her knuckles turning white.“Why do we have to wait twenty-four hours just to file a police report? For every

Sabine immediately hurried toward Dominic, her eyes instinctively scanning the space behind him.It was empty, with no trace of me.Sabine’s heart sank in her chest.“Dominic, where’s Elaine?”She reached out and grabbed his arm, her fingers trembling uncontrollably.“I’ve searched everywhere in the apartment, but she’s nowhere to be found.“What did you say to her yesterday? Did you drive her away?”Dominic’s temples throbbed with a sharp pain.He lowered his eyes, avoiding her frantic and anxious gaze, his Adam’s apple bobbing heavily.“I didn’t say anything.”His throat was dry and raspy, a consequence of staying up the entire night.“I was at the hospital accompanying you through your tests all night.”“Then where could she possibly have gone?”Sabine’s eyes turned crimson in an instant, large tears splashing onto his arm.“How could a living person simply vanish into thin air…“The wound on her back hasn’t healed properly. It’s so cold outside at night, and she didn’t pack—where c

As I ate, out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of Dominic’s shadow. His body remained hidden around the corner, but I could see his hand gripping the doorframe, knuckles white and strained.Sabine reached out, about to tuck the blanket around me, but suddenly gasped in pain. She doubled over, her face draining of color in an instant.Dominic burst into the room at once.“What’s wrong?”“My belly… it hurts so bad…”He instantly gathered Sabine into his arms, turning to rush out the door.My hands trembled out of control, and the bowl of soup slipped, shattering on the floor.Dominic’s footsteps halted. It was as though he had just summoned every ounce of mental resolve within himself, his posture rigid.“I’m sorry.“I gave you my word, but I simply cannot stand by and watch her suffer.“This is the last time.”Without another word, Dominic carried Sabine away.Sabine’s hand lifted slightly in the air before falling back down, empty of strength.I opened my mouth, but my throa
