‎By mid-October, Pine Valley was blanketed in a rich tapestry of crimson, burnt amber, and deep gold. The morning air carried a sharp, crisp bite that hinted at the approaching winter, and the town common was buzzing with activity for the annual Autumn Harvest Market.

‎Kat stood at her wooden stall near the center of the common, adjusting a display of freshly jarred apple butter and dark honey harvested from Arthur’s hives. She wore a fitted charcoal knit sweater and dark denim, her dark hair pulled back in a loose braid. She looked effortless, calm, and radiant in the crisp autumn sunlight.

‎"Kat, these honey jars are going to sell out before noon," Marge called out from the neighboring bakery booth, carefully setting down a basket of warm cinnamon rolls. "Arthur always had the sweetest combs in the ridge."

‎"He took good care of the hives, Marge," Kat replied with a warm smile, handing a jar to an elderly town resident. "I’m just keeping up with his routine."

‎Doctor Harlan James strolled through the bustling aisle, dressed in a sharp navy wool coat. He carried two warm cups of spiced cider, his face lighting up the moment his eyes landed on Kat.

‎"Morning, Kat," Harlan said smoothly, stepping up to her stall and offering her one of the steaming cups. "I thought you might need a warm break before the afternoon crowd hits."

‎"Thank you, Harlan. That’s very thoughtful," Kat accepted gently, taking a slow sip. The warm cider cut through the morning chill perfectly.

‎"I was hoping you'd let me walk you through the timber exhibits after lunch," Harlan offered, his hazel eyes fixed on her with clear, warm affection. "Grant set up a demonstration down near the mill staging area."

‎"I'd like that," Kat agreed easily, offering him a sweet, relaxed smile.

‎Across the crowded square, standing near the heavy iron scales of the Vance Timber Mill display, Azriel Vance was hauling a massive oak beam off a flatbed trailer. He wore a dark canvas work jacket with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing corded muscle and dusted wood shavings.

‎Azriel paused, his icy blue eyes cutting across the bustling market square. He watched Harlan leaning in close to Kat’s stall, watched Kat’s easy smile, and felt a familiar, tight pressure lock in his chest. His jaw set in a hard, rigid pulse along his cheekbone. He didn't say a word, nor did he step closer. He simply turned back to his truck, slamming a heavy iron lock-pin into place with a sharp, echoing metallic clang that resonated across the timber yard.

‎By early afternoon, Kat walked down to the timber staging area near the riverbank with Harlan. The sound of rush-water from the mill wheel mingled with the chatter of locals inspecting the heavy timber cuts meant for winter construction.

‎Grant Asher was demonstrating a heavy iron winch system on the wooden pier, surrounded by a small crowd of onlookers.

‎"The trick to securing the river pilings before the freeze," Grant explained to the group, "is ensuring the anchor pins are set deep into the granite bedding." He struggled slightly to align a heavy iron locking bar into a oak beam. "It takes a bit of force to set the angle..."

‎Before Grant could finish, Azriel stepped up to the timber frame. Without a word, he grabbed the heavy iron sledgehammer resting by the workbench.

‎In one fluid, powerful motion, Azriel swung the heavy hammer, driving the iron anchor pin three inches deep into the dense oak and granite setting with a single, deafening CRACK.

‎The crowd let out a quiet murmur of appreciation. Grant laughed, shaking his head. "Alright, or you can just let Azriel handle the heavy muscle."

‎Azriel lowered the sledgehammer, resting the iron head on the timber platform. He was breathing steadily, his broad chest rising under his canvas coat.

‎Kat stood at the edge of the crowd alongside Harlan. As the applause died down, Azriel lifted his head, his dark, intense gaze locking straight onto Kat.

‎There was no polite smile, no casual nod. His icy eyes burned into hers with an unsaid, heavy weight that seemed to draw all the air out of the cold autumn afternoon.

‎Harlan reached out, gently placing a hand on Kat’s shoulder to guide her toward the cider press. "Shall we get another cup, Kat?"

‎Kat felt the subtle, electric pull between her and the silent carpenter standing over the timber frame. Her heart gave a quiet, traitorous thud against her ribs. But her face remained entirely calm, her dark eyes holding Azriel's fierce gaze for two long, suspended beats without yielding a single inch of her composure.

‎"Lead the way, Harlan," Kat said smoothly, offering Harlan a light smile as she turned away, leaving Azriel standing in the shadows of the timber yard, watching her walk away into the bright autumn sun.

  • Seasons of Pine Valley   Prologue

The steering wheel of the rusty pickup truck felt cold and unforgiving under Kat’s calloused fingers. She checked the dashboard clock as the mountain road cut deeper into the dense timberline. The high-rises, paved roads, and frantic pace of her city life were three hundred miles behind her. In their place stood a dark, endless wall of pine trees, their sharp scent bleeding through the cracked window alongside the crisp mountain air.Katrina Selene Rosewood. Her full name was printed on the thick manila envelope sitting on the passenger seat, right above the wax-sealed deed to Rosewood Acreage. It had been six months since her grandfather, Arthur, passed away. Six months of back-and-forth phone calls with lawyers, packing up her apartment, and ignoring everyone back home who called her insane. Her former boss had assumed she was taking a temporary sabbatical to process her grief, but Kat knew the truth: she was never going back. Arthur Rosewood hadn't just left her a patch of land; he

  • Seasons of Pine Valley   Chapter One

Morning broke softly over Pine Valley, casting pale silver light through the dusty windowpane. Kat opened her eyes, feeling an unfamiliar heaviness in her chest as the reality of her new life settled in. She looked around the small bedroom, feeling a deep sense of nostalgia mixed with quiet grief. It was her old room. Whenever she and her parents had visited her grandfather during summer breaks, this was where she slept. The room remained largely untouched by time, preserved like a memory frozen in amber. A simple wooden bed frame held her mattress, and against the far wall stood an antique oak dresser. Beside it rested her heavy luggage and a couple of stacked cardboard boxes she had managed to haul upstairs the night before. On the windowsill, a small potted plant sat completely withered, its brown leaves crisp and lifeless—a silent testament to how long this house had lacked a living touch.Sighing, Kat threw off the blankets, threw on a comfortable pair of jeans and a flannel sh

‎The wind roared in Kat’s ears as the motorcycle carved through the midnight fog, banking hard into the winding mountain curves.‎With no other choice, Kat reached out and wrapped her arms tightly around Azriel’s waist. Through his heavy leather jacket, she could feel the rigid tension in his back and the steady, solid heat radiating from him. He didn't adjust his posture or acknowledge her touch—he simply stared straight at the dark, moonlit road ahead, driving fast, smooth, and aggressive.‎Within ten minutes, the heavy tires crushed over the rusted iron gates of Rosewood Acreage, bringing the bike to a sudden, controlled stop in front of the dark farmhouse.‎The thunderous roar of the engine died, plunging the yard back into dead silence.‎Kat quickly unclasped her arms from his waist and slid off the back of the seat, reaching up to undo the helmet strap. She handed the black helmet back to him, her cheeks flushed from the cold wind—and the sheer adrenaline of the ride.‎"Thank yo

  • Seasons of Pine Valley   Chapter Three

‎The morning air smelled crisp and sharp, carrying the bitter tang of wood shavings and autumn pine. By eight o'clock, Adeline’s heavy-duty red truck was already parked near the sagging barn, its bed loaded with thick timber planks, iron jacks, and leather tool belts.‎"We need to raise the main crossbeam three inches before we can even think about replacing the rotted cedar post," Adeline declared, slapping a dusty hand against the massive, decaying wood pillar inside the dim barn. She adjusted her leather apron, her vibrant red hair pulled up into a tight, messy knot. "If we don't brace it properly first, this entire section comes down on our heads."‎Kat wiped a streak of sweat from her forehead, her work gloves already stained with dark grease. "Tell me what to lift, Adeline. I'm ready."‎Adeline let out a rich, approving laugh, tossing Kat a heavy iron hydraulic jack. "That's what I like to hear, city girl. Grab those cedar blocks from the bed. We're building a cribbing tower."‎

‎The ride to the clinic passed in tense, heavy silence.‎Azriel kept both hands locked on the steering wheel of his truck, his eyes fixed on the winding mountain road. Beside him, Kat pressed the blood-soaked bandana against her arm, keeping her eyes glued to the window as the pine trees blurred past in the fading twilight. Neither of them said a word, but the silence inside the cab felt charged, thick with the unspoken tension from the creek.‎When the truck pulled up outside the small medical clinic, Azriel cut the engine. He didn't rush to open her door, maintaining that deliberate, frustrating distance between them.‎Kat opened her own door, stepping down onto the gravel, and walked up the clinic steps with her head held high. Azriel followed three paces behind her, his heavy work boots thudding softly against the floorboards as he pushed the front door open.‎The small waiting room smelled faintly of rubbing alcohol and fresh lavender. Dr. Harlan stepped out from the back examina

‎‎The morning sun woke Kat with a warm ray of light filtering through her bedroom window. She sat up, stretching her sore muscles, and immediately checked her left forearm. The bandage was clean, and the deep sting from yesterday had subsided into a dull, manageable ache.‎Following Harlan’s strict orders to take it easy, Kat spent the morning on lighter tasks. She swept the dust from the living room floor, wiped down the kitchen counters, and organized the stacks of old hand tools in the porch pantry.‎By noon, the quiet hum of an engine echoed up the driveway.‎Kat walked out to the porch to see Mayor Thomas stepping out of his blue sedan, holding a thermos and a paper bag that smelled faintly of freshly baked cinnamon rolls.‎"Good afternoon, Kat!" Thomas called out, walking up the porch steps with a bright, fatherly smile. "I heard down at the general store that you had a little run-in with an old fence yesterday. Thought I’d drop by and check on our newest farmer."‎"News really
