Chapter 11

Mom said, “Tessa, my dear, you look so beautiful!”

I stood in front of the mirror looking at myself. I had put my hair up just as I did for the Christmas party. I was wearing a long dark blue dress that had white flowers on it. It was tailored to my waist and low cut in the front. I wore small heels and added a baby’s breath arrangement in my hair.

Beth said, “Look at you! I’m so happy for you. Are you ready?”

“Yes,” I smiled. “I’m ready. Girls are we ready?” I asked Maggie and

Chapter 13“I’m nervous,” I said holding Cassy and taking Jason’s hand as we entered the small room I had visited many times with perspective adoption parents. I seen the counselor in her usual chair in the background, I smiled politely. Then my eyes turned to the little redhead sitting at the table coloring. “Hi!” I sat down next to him. Jason went on the floor with Cassy and gathered a few toys to keep her busy. “Hi,” he said and looked over to Cassy. “Who’s she?”“This is Cassy, my daughter. I’m Tessa and this is my husband Jason,” I smiled at him.I got right to the point, he is eight years old afterall. I asked, “Do you know why we are all here?”Jason raised his eyebrow at me, but didn’t dare say a word. We agreed I would take the lead today.Thomas said, “Yes, you are here because somebody has to take care of me.”“Well, that’s true.” I shook my head. “Have you ever thought about being a big brother?”“Would she be my sister?” he said excited. “Yes...she would. I thi

Chapter 12“Jason wake up!” I shouted, running to the bathroom.“What’s wrong?” He jumped up quickly. I shouted from the bathroom, “I think my water just broke!”“Ok!” He threw his clothes on and searched for my bag.“Ooohh! It’s not supposed to start hurting so soon. I think I feel a contraction.”“The lamaze instructor said everyone’s different. You want to call Beth?”“Yes, give me my phone. You call Mom.”“I got her, she’s going to meet us at the hospital. I told her we were leaving now,” he said helping me out of the bathroom.“Beth said we should go now too. It’s happening too fast Jason, Beth spent hours at home before she left for the hospital.”“Look at me! Don’t you dare Tessa, don’t you dare start thinking negative. You and Cassandra are going to be just fine, breath, calm down. I will call the Dr on the way...We are going to meet our daughter today!”“Ok,” I took a deep breath in. “You’re right, I can’t wait to see her,” I panted. “I’m glad it’s a Saturday and everyone’s

They looked absolutely adorable. We walked outside to the gorgeously landscaped garden area. Spot lights were strategically placed to show off the flowers which were now in full bloom, I could smell their sweet scents. It was dusk and the candle lanterns lit up the cobblestone path as I walked towards Jason. I passe

Chapter 10The following morning I was released. Jason had slept next to me on the floor all night long. I couldn’t convince him to leave. When they opened the door, he held me so tight. I didn’t have any tears left to cry. I just held on to him. He told me to go home and to take the day off. But I couldn’t wait. I walked into the office lobby, politely said hello to the reception girls and headed up the elevator. I went to Robert’s office first. He greeted me graciously as usual. I knew the word had already spread about what had happened in court. I explained to Robert the way I felt about working here now. He seemed to understand but did beg me to reconsider. I went over the important files with him and gave him all of my notes. Next, I went to Jason’s office. “Tessa, I thought you were staying home today?”“No, you told me to stay home, but…” I handed him my letter of resignation I had written this morning. “Please forgive me.”He grabbed the paper and tore it up, “I don’t want

Chapter 9 The holidays have come and gone. I hired someone to refurbish my floors and they came out amazing. My condo felt like home now that I had put my finishing touches on it. I continued to be busy at work and preoccupied with the Bateman case. We would be going in front of the judge soon. Jason explained the worst case scenario to the Batemans. I couldn’t do it. I could not imagine any sane person giving this child back to the mother who neglected her, left her to fend for herself emotionally, physically, and socially at less than two years old. The photos in her file showed her being kept in absolute filth. She was malnourished and had a sadness in her eyes. It broke my heart. It was Friday, at the end of the day when I heard a knock at my door. “Come in,” I shouted. Jason quickly closed the door behind him and came over to the desk leaning on it with his big grin. “Did you have any plans this weekend?”“Not really,” I said curious.“How would you like to spend the week

Chapter 8I opened my eyes to see him lying next to me. I took a deep breath in remembering the way he made me feel last night. From his kiss to the way he moved inside of me, every touch made by body and mind long for him. I watched him for a long while, remembering the first time we met on the train. The simple decision to let me sit with him has changed my life. I leaned over and barely kissed his cheek while I whispered, “Good morning.”Without opening his eyes, his arm came across my body. “Mmm…I was afraid last night was all a dream.”“Nope, I’m really here,” I laughed.“I really liked falling asleep with you next to me. The only thing better is waking up to you,” he smiled and kissed my cheek.I whispered, “I really liked it too.” I rubbed his back and kissed his shoulder. “Are you up, for going to see the tree still?”“Sure.”“I need to shower, and stop by my place for clothes.”“I hate the thought of you putting your clothes back on,” he said with that grin of his as
