Zinnia’s POV

I was packing a small bag when the knock came.

It was hard and fast. Joseph moved to the door at once and looked through the side window. He glanced back at me with a tight face and then opened the door a little.

A man and a woman stood outside. I knew them from the market. They lived near the south edge of town. Their little girl was about June’s age. The woman held the child in her arms. The girl’s face was pale. Her breathing sounded wrong, short and wet.

“Please,” the woman sai

Zinnia’s POVWe stopped for the night under a thick stand of pines.Joseph found a place where the ground was dry and the trees blocked most of the wind. We made a small fire that gave more heat than light. June fell asleep early, worn out from the long walk and the sadness he still carried. His wooden wolf rested under his arm the way it always did.Joseph and I sat a short distance from the fire. The night was cold and clear. Stars showed through the high branches. For a long time neither of us spoke.I was the one who broke the silence.“He still has not said much about Sam or the school,” I said. “The quiet worries me more than the tears did.”Joseph nodded. “He is holding it inside. Children do that when the loss feels too big to name.”“I keep asking myself if I should have stayed one more day. Just to let him say goodbye.”“One more day might have been the day the second stranger knocked on our door,” Joseph said. “You chose the safer path for him. It still costs. Both things a

Zinnia’s POVWe drove until the sky turned gray.Joseph found a hidden track that led into a thick group of trees. He stopped the truck and turned off the engine. The sudden quiet felt loud after the long night of road noise.June woke when the truck stopped. He looked around at the trees and the cold morning light. His face was still full of sleep, but the questions came fast.“Are we going back to the boarding house later?”I took a breath. “No. We cannot go back.”He sat up straight. The wooden wolf fell from his lap onto the seat. “What about school? What about Sam? I told him I would play ball when the snow melts.”The pain in his voice cut me. I reached for his hand. He pulled it back.“I know this hurts,” I said. “I know you liked it there. But the men asking questions made it unsafe. We had to leave.”June’s eyes filled with tears. He did not cry out loud. He turned his face toward the window and watched the trees. His small shoulders shook once.Joseph spoke in a low, careful

  • Second chance luna   Chapter 49

Zinnia’s POVThe world moved faster than we hoped.By mid-morning I could feel the change in the town. People looked at me longer when I stepped outside. Two women near the well stopped talking when I passed. A man from the market nodded at me with a strange mix of thanks and worry. The story of the gold light and the healed child was already traveling from mouth to mouth.Joseph left early to watch the roads. He told me to stay inside with the door locked until he returned. June stayed home from school. We had already decided it was safer that way. He sat at the table with a pencil and paper, but he did not draw much. He kept glancing at the window.“Are people talking about you again?” he asked.“Yes,” I said. I kept my voice calm. “That is why we are being careful today.”He went back to his paper. His small shoulders stayed tight.Near noon a knock sounded at the door. It was not Joseph’s knock. I motioned for June to go into the bedroom. He went at once and closed the door most o

Her voice shook. “We know you stopped. We know you do not want people to talk. But she is getting worse. The clinic could not help. The fever will not break. We have no one else.”Joseph looked at me. I could see the warning in his eyes. We were supposed to stay quiet. We were supposed to leave soon. Any use of the gift could draw the wrong attention.I looked at the child. Her small chest rose and fell too fast. Her lips had a faint blue edge. The gift under my skin woke me at once and pushe

  • Second chance luna   Chapter 47

Zinnia’s POVThe letter came in the afternoon.A boy from the next farm brought it to the boarding house door. He said an old woman on the south road paid him a coin to deliver it to the people in the corner rooms. Then he ran off before I could ask more questions.Joseph took the envelope and checked it carefully. There was no name on the outside. Inside we found a single sheet of paper with short lines written in a tight hand.It was Christiana’s handwriting, I knew it at once.We sat at the table while June was still at school. Joseph read the words out loud in a low voice.“I am alive, I am hunted. The old enemies found my trail after I left you. I lead them in circles for now, do not look for me yet, Baelor is not done yet, he’s been gathering scattered wolves from broken packs. He wants power more than ever, he may move against the weak Alpha, he may also move against you and the boy.Watch both sides and stay free. The room felt colder after the last line.I took the paper and

  • Second chance luna   Chapter 46

Zinnia’s POVI thought June was asleep.Joseph and I had kept our voices low in the common room. We talked about the message and the ten days and the choice to leave. We did not shout. We did not use hard words. Still, some of the talk must have carried through the thin wall.I found him sitting up in bed when I went to check on him. His wooden wolf was pressed tight against his chest. His eyes were wide in the dark.“Mama,” he said in a small voice. “Are the bad people from the old pack coming?”My heart sank. I closed the door softly behind me and sat on the edge of his bed.“Why do you ask that?”“I heard you and Joseph. You said the Frost Pack. You said they watched the school. You said we might have to leave.”I took a slow breath. I did not want to lie to him. I also did not want to fill him with more fear than he already carried.“There are people who still remember us,” I said carefully. “They sent a message. We do not like the message. So we are being very careful. That is al
