ADAM
“What devil is that, boy?” He quizzed, sitting up.
“It’s Julie” I told him.
“Julie, Julie, Julie. That name kind of sounds familiar. My old brains have it somewhere, but I can’t seem to say where” He thought hard, while staring into nothing in particular.
Dad used to have the sharpest of memories when we were younger. It made it difficult for me to tell contradicting lies, because he’d always find out, even if it happened ten years later. Seeing him try so hard to remember Julie, brought me to the full realization that he was getting old indeed and there was nothing I could do about it.
“You seriously don’t remember Julie?”
“No, son. Although the name rings a bell”
“That’s my former assistant, dad. The young lady I got pregnant. I could have sworn that you remember her, given the fact that you kinda threatened to kill her” I explained.
“Ohh, yes yes yes! I know Julie. And, point of correction, I never threatened her. I only did what I did to scare her from doing something dangerous to the company name” He defended.
“Well, whatever you did to scare her, did not really work, ‘cause she’s back now”
“Oh wow! I guess she’s got some strong backup or something, because nobody goes back to where her life was threatened”
“I thought same too, dad. I really did”
“So, what do you want me to do? Is she still pestering you?” He questioned, with his eyes shooting wide.
“No, dad. It’s different this time around”
“You know, I could arrange for her arrest, or better still a kidnap with no traces. Just say the word and it’s your call”
“What the fuck, dad?! Why would you even think of doing that? She hasn’t done anything to me. At least, not yet” I frowned.
“Alright alright. I should have known you’re still weak. So, where do I come in in all these?”
I took a deep breath to think of what I was about to do. Telling dad about Julie would warrant him coming around the office once in a while, just for the purpose of checkmating her.
If there was anything I hated the most, it was dad being in the office bossing me around. He always found pleasure in criticizing how I ran things over there. To him, I was being very soft on my staff and his brute was what built the company over the years.
“You know I told you something about taking our fashion franchise to a global scale, right? I decided to open up.
“Yes, you did. What has that got to do with the girl?” His interest heightened.
“The company visited a certain Luxanne in Birmingham. Good stuff they do over there. Been making waves too. So, we reached out to them for a deal where they’d be our fashion consultancy agency and guess who gave their presentation?” I paused, waiting for his reply.
“Don’t tell me it’s the girl” He was curious.
"The same Ol’ Julie, dad!” I affirmed.
“You mean to tell me that she went from being your pathetic assistant to giving presentations in companies?” He asked, with an air of doubt.
“Trust me, dad. This is no prank. Let’s just say the jilting made her go through some hard character development” I laughed.
“You can say that again”
“So, currently, she’s back in the company, our company, as a consultant and partner” I broke the news, waiting to see him go mad with rage.
But none of that happened. He seemed rather quiet about the news, which was awkward.
“Adam, I’d have to be honest with you here. Not just as your father, but as someone that knows a lot about women. No woman would be treated that way and come back better without having ulterior motives. Not a single woman! I’m damn sure this one is here to take revenge on you and if you let her in, sooner than you expected, she’d turn the entire company against you. Never underestimate a woman’s scorn” He advised.
“Well, to be honest, she already started with Samantha on her first day. You know they never got along then”
“You see?! And that’s exactly how they operate. Who knows who would be a victim of her scorn the next? You? Speaking of Samantha, what’s it to you two, Adam?” He inquired.
“I knew you’d definitely ask this. Can’t we just focus on the issue on ground, dad?”
“No, we can’t. You talked about her first, so you answer”
“Samantha and I are just there. Yeah, we had our good times and all that, but I’m too busy for all that now. She’s just not the sort of girl I need in my life right now” I answered, admiring the finesse with which the gardener did the flowers.
“You know, son, I really thought the both of you would end up together. You two would have made a great team” He was visibly disappointed.
“I guess. But we’re still making a great team at the office. Isn’t that what matters? Let’s get back to Julie, please” I cut in, steering the topic to the initial.
“Has she displayed any attitude to you yet?” He queried.
“Just a tiny bit, but I’d definitely clip her wings soon” I assured him.
“Make sure she never forgets her place. If need be, don’t hesitate to send her away again” He gnashed his teeth.
“I’d put that into consideration. Care for some rum?” I got up to get myself another glass of rum.
“Just a little would do. Since you all said an old man can’t have his favorites”
“You know, she also has a son. About five or six years old” I announced on my way back with the glasses.
“She never aborted the so-called baby she claimed you had together?” He said in shock.
“She did. She said she got married and divorced a few years later.
“She must be a whore. Sleeping around with different men. I’m damn certain the kid she tried to pin on you was never yours. She must have fucked around and gotten pregnant by her multiple sex partners, then tried to hold you down with it. Good thing you got rid of her the first time and you should do it again” He took one gulp of the rum, draining the glass of its content.
“Nah, Dad. I don’t think she’s harmful. I don’t blame her for how she acts towards me now, ‘cause I was an arsehole then” I smiled.
“Now you will listen to me, Adam. You did what was best for the family and the company. In no world was I going to stay alive and watch a nobody ruin my blood and sweat. So, you better get rid of that guilt in you” He said with a domineering tone, as he walked back into the house, leaving me to myself.
JULIE“Now, that arsehole, Adam would regret all he ever did to me. I would be his worst nightmare. As for Samantha, I’ll make sure she gives me my respect, even if it means going to war for it” I soliloquized. It’s been about two weeks since I resumed work at the Jones Group of Companies. Things were still very much like they used to be 6 years ago. The only difference was that I was more respected, unlike when I was still Adam’s little bitch whom he used to satisfy his never-ending urges.Whenever I saw the face of Adam Jones, I saw that of a villain. One that promised me the whole world and threw me outside in the cold to die. Some days, I wished I could do more than yell at him; probably beat him up in retaliation for all that he made me pass through with my son.I swore never to let him know Bryan was his. After all, he was nowhere to be found when I was striving in Birmingham, multitasking between work and taking care of the boy. That bastard doesn’t deserve to father my child!
JULIE“Alright. How long would that take you?” He asked.“Let’s say just a few minutes. You already made the job easier for me” I gestured with my fingers.“So, how are you keeping up with him? I mean, your kid” He asked out of nowhere. The question took me aback because it was usually only about my work and how I was coping in the new place. I took a deep breath and replied.“I won’t say it has been easy. Sometimes, it just gets too demanding and I’m the only one available to take care of him” I continued with my work.“How long has it been since the divorce?” He pushed further. All these years, I’ve been trying so hard to keep the fact that Adam is my baby daddy, a secret, and now, Max wants to get it out of me. He didn’t seem to back down. Even if I steered away from the topic, he’d still raise the question some other time.“ Five years, Max. It’s been over five years since we split” I lied. His eyes lit up in shock as he continued,“You mean to tell me he never spent a fucking yea
JULIEBryan was my world, the only reason I kept pushing. He was still a kid, but I could comfortably shed a tear or two whenever I was in my feelings and he would console me without knowing what the issue was. I kept doing my best to ensure he never missed the presence of a father.Birmingham was home to him. He was born and brought up there. All his friends were there and it was never difficult for him to make friends in school there. But it was different in London. He would always come home to complain about other kids not wanting to play with him.To him, the kids in London were different and they didn’t like him.‘Mummy, I don’t like it here. All the kids are being mean to me” He’d usually say.“I’m sure you’ll enjoy it soon enough, sweetie. Just give it time” I’d assure him.I just kept hoping I told him the truth and not something to keep him calm for the moment.I watched him as he bounced in glee towards the car. A happy kid, he was.“Baby, how was school today? Did you make
JULIE“Who could that be?” I thought to myself. The fact that the voice called my name fully made me think deeply. Not a lot of people knew my full name in London. It was always Plain Julie. I had to turn to see who it was.“Look at you, girl!” She continued, and my eyes lit in surprise as I recognized her.“Lisa O’neil?” I was excited.Lisa was no stranger to me. She used to be a staff of Jones Group even before I got hired the first time. Lisa was one of the closest friends I had back then. Unlike the others that treated me like trash because I was a mere assistant, Lisa was different towards me; always defending me whenever Samantha and the rest were being scumbags towards me.She was also aware of the secret relationship between Adam and me; a secret she found out after seeing the both of us in a sexual position on one of those days, and promised never to spill the beans.“Girl, how long has it been? Ages?” She was happy to see me.“Yeah yeah. It’s been only about six years. But l
ADAMMy head was banging; more like a gun battle was going on in it. I knew had the option to stay at home if I wanted to. I could even choose to miss work for the rest of the week. After all, I was the boss and nobody would question my absence. Bad example to my staff, I know. But c’mon, there should be some perks to being a billionaire and I’m simply enjoying one of them. The cause of the headache was nothing else but my overnight partying the previous day. A business partner of mine had his birthday the previous day and decided to throw a party to celebrate it. And boy! Was it some party?I could still vividly remember all that I was involved in at the party. It was one like none other. The expensive drinks, the cigarettes, and the girls. Yes, the girls- the special part of the party. My little flashback was cut short as I was brought back to reality by the sound of my alarm for the umpteenth time. It was time to prepare for work, but I kept snoozing the alarm. I just needed some r
ADAM There was an awkward silence in the room when she walked in. More like a messiah we’d been waiting for. “I’m really sorry for not making it on time. An emergency came up and I had to attend to it” She further explained. “Speak of the devil and she appears” Samantha added, looking around to see if anyone supported her, but was only met with the scorn in Julie’s eyes. I had noticed the friction between Julie and Samantha long ago. They never liked each other. Having the two of them as my partners would mean having to deal with a lot of fights and malice. “Julie, you do realize we have all been waiting for over an hour, right? Every one of us here has something important to handle for the day. I shouldn’t be here, given the fact that I’m not too strong. But I had to make it regardless, ‘cause this an extremely important meeting. What excuse do you have, young lady?” I expected Julie to display her usual mean attitude towards me for the question, but she did the opposite. Probab
ADAMI lacked the luxury of patience to wait for Julie to be done with her stuff. Who knows? She could be intentionally delaying just to piss me off. I had to get started rather than wait for her.“Over forty years ago, My father started this dream, or as he calls it, His empire. Throughout those years, I have watched him clear thousands of hurdles. I saw him make sacrifices. I have seen my father go through different phases trying to make this empire as great as it is today” I paused to see if the rest were paying attention, then continued.“My father wasn’t born with a silver spoon, but today, he has created a factory of silver spoons to last generations to come” I took the last sip of my coffee.“He passed the mantle to me years back and I would be damned if this legacy dies in my hands. Therefore, to ensure this empire stays at the top for a long time, we have to devise new means to constantly be on the tongues of everyone in London and every part of the world. Are you with me?” I
JULIEI got back to my office after the presentation ended. I had no interest in exchanging pleasantries or accepting praises from the others. All I just needed was to lay my head on my office desk and rest, or better still, sleep off.The issue with Bryan denied me of my sleep. I had to be up early enough to attend to him and take him to the hospital. During the presentation, I just wished I could swiftly turn the hands of time to the part where I would be done with it and on my way home.My mind raced back to Samantha and her antics. She had sworn to make my life a living hell. She didn’t relent during the presentation. Everyone present could visibly tell her “Criticisms” of my designs were from a place of jealousy and scorn and not true concern.Samantha was like the Queen Bee of the company. She was the most respected lady around. Though, I would call it fear, because a lot of people didn’t have good things to say about her. The receptionists hated her. The Janitors despised her g
