“That’s the problem. I know that everyone kind of expects the worst from me. The whole Liam, the flirt tag has pretty much stuck. As much as it was fun back then, it isn’t now. I feel empty inside. I want to do better. I want to be better. Feels awkward to say it out loud, but sometimes I wonder what it would be like to fall in love with someone. You know, have someone I care about. Someone I want to be faithful to.”

I take his hand in mine, squeezing it lightly. “What’s stopping you?”

“I don’t know.” He confesses in a low voice. He sounds genuinely hurt. So much that it hurts me. “Maybe because I’m scared. Right from when I was a child, I never knew what love felt like or what it felt like to be loved. Mom died when I was still a toddler. I’m not so sure of the details but from what I gathered, she got sick a couple years after I was born. Her health had been a problem due to complications stemming from my birth. She prioritized me over her own wellness. Though my dad never said it o

I grit my teeth. “Yeah. A total blast. Woohoo.” I spin a finger in the air.“Do you think she’s after more money? She could have gotten a lot more out of you than she did when you divorced, and maybe she’s interested in patching things up to get more.”“I didn’t even think of that. You know what my biggest fear is here?” I say. “It’s my mom. What if she tries to push me to patch things up with Amanda?”“You think your mom would do that?”“She was just talking about how she thought I could have tried harder to save our marriage. She’s desperate for a grandkid.” I prod Dash forward, and we fly down the hill to the pasture. There’s a reason this horse used to race. His powerful legs tear into the ground as his hooves pound across the grass.Dragon’s hoof-beats sound behind me, and I slow Dash to a walk. He falls in line beside me. I have a racetrack set up on my property for my racehorses to practice on. Since no one is using it right now, I lead him over to it and enjoy a few laps with

“Go on, silly dog. Get some exercise. It’s good for you.”Stella laughs, and finally Sausage gives up his fight and allows her to lead him toward the road.“That dog has gotten fat,” Ronnie says.I laugh. “Yeah. We’re starting him on a new walking regimen because I’m weak, and I can’t stop letting him have snacks.”“So what did you want to tell me?” Ronnie asks.I walk into the stable toward Dash. “Did you hear that my dad is looking for a new company to merge with? He’s thinking of merging with this big company in Singapore, but they’re being difficult.”“Isn’t that stuff top secret?” Ronnie jokes.“Keep it between us, of course.”“I was only kidding. You know I wouldn’t repeat something like that to the wrong people.”“But if it’s true, I may end up going to Singapore a lot more.”“I thought Ashton was handling the Singapore division.” We stop in front of Dash’s stall.“He is. But there will be a lot more to do over there, and there’s a lot of schmoozing we’ll need to do.”“Didn’t y

LANGSTONI haven’t heard from her in years. Talk about a blast from the past. Why would Amanda be reaching out to me? Once I’m in my car, I read and re-read the text I got from her while I was in the stables talking to Jenni.Amanda: Langston. I haven’t been fully honest with you. Is there a time we could talk in person soon?I put the car into reverse and drive home. What would Amanda possibly have to tell me after all these years? We would have been married ten years by now if she’d decided to stay married. It’s concerning that she wants to talk in person too. Whatever she has to tell me must be huge. When I pull into my garage, I shoot her a text.Langston: I’m in Blue Mountain these days. You’re welcome to come here.I’m trying to think of the best way to meet. It’s not like she can stay with me. Maybe my parents’ house? She’s been to their house many times, but that’s not very private either. Who knows what my mom would think about Amanda showing up on their doorstep? Would she b

“Well, yeah. We aren’t exactly friendly with each other. You plan on decimating my horse in this next race.”“But you know I consider you a friend, right?” I don’t know why this is suddenly so important to me.“You just said that, so yes.” Langston fiddles with his phone again. Is he paying attention? “So about that date…”“You’re asking me on a date. How forward of you.”“We’re not in the 1800s,” I tease. “I think it’s okay. Anyway, there’s nothing romantic about it. Just a little help from a friend.”“I like how you upgraded me now that you need something,” he teases back.I pretend to be offended. “How rude!”“But that being said… I’m willing to help you out.”“Why do I sense there’s a catch here?” What am I getting myself into? I’m not so sure I should trust Langston. The guy plans to decimate my horse in the races, after all. He’s the competition.“No catch. But I want to reserve a favor for later.”I stare at him. Maybe this isn’t such a good idea. Who knows what Langston would

“Sure. It’s just Langston.” I shrug. Nothing will ever come of it. I know that for a fact.My mom squeals. “Just wait until I tell Laurie. Our dream is finally coming true. A Finley and a Keith together at last.”“Whoa, whoa, whoa. Don’t get ahead of yourself. It’s just a date, and he hasn’t even agreed to it yet.”“Oh, he will. I’ll make sure of that.”“Mom. You can’t bully the guy into taking me out.”“But I can win him over with sweets.” She eyes me. “But we’ll leave the cooking to Ruby.”I grin. “Are you saying I’ll just chase him off with my cooking?”She folds her arms and looks at me. “I’m not saying anything.”But I’m no dummy.* * *“What are you doing here?” I ask Langston as he approaches me at my parents’ stable. Valentine has finished with the trainer, who’s just packed up and left. “Coming to spy on the competition?” I tease. “Afraid you can’t win on your own merits?”“No. I was just looking for Ronnie.” Langston is wearing a cowboy hat, plaid shirt, jeans, and cowboy bo

JENNI My cat, Noodle, bats at the tassels on my boots as my mom launches into the reasons why I need a husband. It’s annoying. The speech, not the cat. Noodles is a troublemaker, but I adore him and he can do no wrong in my eyes. “We’re never going to have any grandchildren at this rate,” my mom says for the zillionth time. They’ve been in this competition with the Keiths for years to see who can have the most grandchildren. So far, my parents are losing, since Weston and Callie have Angel. My parents were star-crossed lovers. My mom is from India, and her family is very traditional and comes from old money. She was supposed to have this arranged marriage, but my mom, being the rebel that she is, fell in love with my dad instead, an American from Georgia. I don’t know why her parents were so mad. It’s not like my dad grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. He also comes from old money. My grandpa on my dad’s side grew up with Langston’s grandpa, who were both in commercial rea
