Cassandra’s POV

My eyes open slowly.

At least, I think they do. Darkness presses against me from every direction thick, suffocating, and heavy, as though I have been buried alive. Every breath takes effort. My chest rises painfully, sending sharp spikes of agony through my body whenever I try to shift. Even my skin feels stretched, tight, and painfully sensitive, as if it no longer belongs to me.

I attempt to move, even just an inch, but my body refuses to obey. Panic crawls up my throat. I try again, but nothing happens. My fingers barely twitch, and my legs feel entirely useless. Whenever I struggle, something rough grinds against my raw skin.

Bandages.

Almost my entire body is bound in them. My head is tightly wrapped, leaving only my eyes exposed, while everything from my chest down is encased in thick layers of gauze.

Why? Why am I wrapped like someone prepared for a burial?

A desperate, choked sound escapes my throat, and suddenly, my memory snaps. The horrific events of that night come rushing back in a violent wave.

I remember returning home from Killian’s office. I remember opening the front door and seeing my parents tied to chairs in the living room, three armed men standing over them. I remember the sharp pain in my leg when a bullet tore through me as I tried to run. Then came the stench of something acrid and burning in the air, followed by the excruciating heat.

“Acid.”

Acid poured over my body before two more bullets ripped through me.

My parents...

I squeeze my eyes shut as the final image strikes me with such force that my heart seems to stop. A single tear slips from the corner of my eye, immediately absorbed by the bandages wrapped around my temple.

“Mom...” The word barely manages to leave my lips.

I try to move again, desperate to escape this bed, desperate to find them, to prove to myself that I imagined the whole nightmare. But my body stays locked in place.

Beside me, a monitor begins to beep rapidly. My heart hammers against my ribs. Muffled voices rise and fall somewhere nearby, but the words blur together into an incomprehensible murmur. My breathing grows shallow and frantic. I can’t get enough air into my lungs. I try to scream, but only a broken gasp tears from my throat.

The beeping accelerates, turning into one continuous, terrifying shriek.

“Mom! Come check on her!” a deep male voice calls out, laced with sudden panic.

Fast footsteps rush into the room.

“Hey, can you hear me?” a woman’s voice asks. I feel hands settling gently near my shoulders. “Cassandra? Cassandra, breathe!”

But I can’t. My chest tightens until it feels as if an impossible weight is crushing my lungs. The pitch-black darkness consumes me once more, and everything goes silent.

When I open my eyes the second time, the world is blindingly bright. Harsh light floods my vision, forcing me to blink rapidly until the room slowly settles into focus. The spinning ceiling comes to a halt. I feel the soft press of a clean sheet against my chest and the firm mattress beneath my back. My entire body is no longer wrapped from head to toe, but something still feels deeply wrong.

I am different.

I raise my hand slowly toward my face.

“If I were you, I wouldn’t do that just yet,” a voice warns softly.

I freeze, turning my head toward the sound.

A middle-aged woman steps farther into the room. She looks to be in her mid-to-late forties, possessing a poised, disciplined face that seems rarely inclined to show softness. She approaches the bed and places the back of her hand against my forehead. A faint flicker of relief relaxes her expression.

“You’re finally awake, Cassandra,” she murmurs.

My heart skips a beat. “How does this stranger know my name?“ Before I can ask, she turns toward the doorway.

“Dorian, she’s awake.”

Heavy footsteps approach, and a man enters the room. He is tall and strikingly handsome, with dark hair and eyes so intense that I instinctively stare, trying to place his features anywhere in my memory.

Nothing. I don't know him, and I don't know the woman beside him.

“Hi,” he says quietly.

I swallow hard, my throat feeling scraped raw. “Who... who are you?” My voice comes out as little more than a raspy whisper. “Where am I?”

The woman moves closer, standing at the edge of my bed. “I’m Penelope, a physician. And this is my son, Dorian.” She gestures toward the man. “We rescued you from those armed men.”

Everything rushes back to me at once. “My parents...” My voice cracks. “Where are my parents?”

Penelope’s expression shifts. She lets out a slow, heavy sigh. “We found you and your parents at an abandoned site near the shipping rails. Those men had already thrown your parents into the water by the time we arrived. They were preparing to throw you in, too.”

My lips part, but air fails to reach my lungs. I fight to hold back a sob as she continues.

“We managed to scare them off by playing a loud police siren from our vehicle. When we reached you, we realized you were still breathing, so we brought you here for emergency treatment.”

A broken sob escapes me before I can stop it. “Mom...” My chest heaves violently. “Dad...”

I press a trembling hand over my mouth, but it does nothing to muffle the cries tearing out of me. “I’m sorry,” I choke out, weeping harder.

Penelope reaches down, her fingers gently stroking my knuckles. “Cassandra, that’s enough. Your body is still recovering.”

I should have listened. I should have stayed far away from Killian when his family warned me. Tears blur everything around me. I weep bitterly until my eyes feel completely dry. When my sobs finally fade into ragged breaths, I look back up at Penelope.

“Tell me the rest,” I say quietly.

She hesitates for a long moment before speaking. “You were critically injured. The acid destroyed a massive portion of the skin on your face and neck. You suffered third-degree burns and two gunshot wounds, and you have been in a coma for two months.”

My mind stumbles over the words. Two months? I thought it happened last night.

My hand rises toward my face again.

“Cassandra, don't—”

My fingers touch my cheek before she can stop me. The moment skin meets skin, I flinch.

It doesn't feel like my face anymore.

Beneath my fingertips is rough, uneven skin, raised in jagged ridges in some places and frighteningly smooth in others. There are thick lines where the burns have scarred over, unnatural bumps beneath the surface, and patches that feel painfully tight whenever I move my jaw.

My breath hitches. I trace the edge of my jawline with trembling fingers, terrified of what else I might discover.

Then, the words spoken to me on that terrifying night ring clear in my mind:

“It's because you're pretty, right? That's why Killian won't let you go. I'll melt that pretty face off before I kill you.”

A choked, horrified sound tears from my throat. I yank my hand away as if my own skin has burned me all over again.

“No...” Fresh tears spill down my cheeks. “My face... What did they do to me?”

Dorian steps closer, his gaze softening with genuine pity. “I’m so sorry this happened to you.”

Driven by sudden panic, I throw off the sheets and try to swing my legs over the edge of the bed. The moment my feet touch the floor, my legs buckle completely.

“Cassandra!” Dorian reacts instantly, catching me before I hit the ground and lifting me back onto the mattress.

“Stop that!” Penelope scolds firmly. “You can barely support your own weight.”

“I need to see Killian!” My voice shakes with desperate fury. “He needs to know what happened! His family did this! They murdered my parents and ruined my life!”

Penelope and Dorian exchange a subtle, heavy glance. Something in that quiet exchange makes the dread inside me swell.

“What is it?” I demand, my eyes darting between them.

Neither answers immediately.

“Tell me what the hell is going on!” I scream.

Penelope lets out a soft breath and looks directly at me. “I’m afraid seeing Killian isn't an option right now.”

“Why?”

“For starters, you are a wanted fugitive across the entire state,” Dorian says gently.

My brow furrows. “Wanted? For what?”

“It’s all over the news,” Dorian explains. “Killian Hawthorne publicly accused you of stealing an irreplaceable, multi-million-dollar diamond necklace from their estate.”

My mouth falls open. “That’s a lie! I didn’t steal anything!”

“I know you didn’t,” Penelope says calmly, though her eyes carry a deep, sorrowful weight. She sighs before continuing. “Killian is also getting married today. To Calista Cross.”

My heart stops beating. I stare at her, waiting for her to break character, to laugh and tell me it's a sick joke.

She doesn't.

The room turns suffocatingly quiet. My fingers slowly slip from the edge of the bedsheet.

Why would Killian marry my best friend? That’s insane, even tho he’s angry with me at the moment. Calista knew the truth, she can’t marry Killian.

“No...” I whisper, shaking my head. “That’s impossible. He wouldn't do that to me. A bitter, broken laugh escapes me, as if voicing the lie could somehow make it real.

“I wish I were lying to you,” Penelope says softly.

She pulls a smartphone from her pocket and steps closer to the bed. Tapping the screen, she turns the display toward me.

The primary headline makes my stomach violently churn:

“BILLIONAIRE CEO KILLIAN HAWTHORNE MARRIES CHILDHOOD SWEETHEART CALISTA CROSS IN EXCLUSIVE CEREMONY”

My fingers dig into the mattress. Photographs cover the article.

There is Killian in a tailored black tuxedo, standing beside Calista in a breathtaking white gown. Another image shows them leaving a venue, smiling radiantly for a wall of cameras. A third shows Calista holding up her hand to display a massive diamond ring, while Killian stands behind her, his arm wrapped possessively around her waist.

I stare at the screen until the images blur together. They look happy. So effortlessly happy.

I keep searching Killian's face in the photo, desperate to find even the smallest trace of the man who once held me and promised me forever.

A quiet, hollow laugh rises from my chest as the horrific truth finally settles into my mind.

“They planned all of this together,” I whisper, the words tasting like ash. “They destroyed my life.”

I try to cry, but no tears come. My eyes have gone completely dry.

Penelope reaches out to comfort me, but I pull my hand away, pulling into myself. I don't want comfort. I want answers. I want to know what I ever did to deserve this from the Hawthorne family. My only crime was loving Killian.

“There is one more thing you need to know, Cassandra...” Penelope’s voice breaks through the silence.

She glances at Dorian briefly before bringing her eyes back to mine.

My heart begins to pound against my ribs once again.

“What?” I whisper.
