Cassandra’s POV

Four years later.

“So perfect,” the makeup artist murmurs as she steps back, admiring her handiwork with a satisfied smile.

I give her a curt nod and slowly rise from my seat. My eyes immediately find the mirror in front of me, and for a long moment, I simply stare.

The woman staring back at me is striking, but she is no longer the innocent girl I remember. She is colder, sharper, and utterly composed. My face has been meticulously sculpted by years of reconstructive surgeries, and the floor-length golden gown hugging my frame only emphasizes how completely I have transformed. The shimmering fabric catches the soft lights, its fitted bodice accentuating my waist before falling to the floor. The plunging neckline reveals just enough to make the silhouette sophisticated yet bold. I smooth my palms over the silk, feeling the weight of the life I have meticulously built around myself.

Four years ago, I was given a new face, a new name, and a new destiny. I am no longer Cassandra Romano. I am Isadora Blackwell, wife of Dorian Blackwell, and a woman who has spent the last four years preparing for this exact night.

Three years ago, after my daughter was born, Dorian and I formalized our contract marriage. What began as a desperate alliance gave me the one thing I required, a legitimate and untouchable place beside one of the most powerful families in the city.

The Blackwells share deep commercial ties with the Hawthornes, and Dorian has spent years quietly solidifying his position within their inner circle. Tonight, the Blackwell family has been invited to an exclusive Hawthorne private gala, and Dorian ensured my name was on the guest list as his wife.

It is the opening we have been waiting for. Tonight, I step back into their world.

My fingers slowly trace the smooth skin of my cheekbone. The face beneath them no longer bears the soft, oval contours of my youth. Surgery reshaped my structure into something defined and elegant, giving me a commanding presence I never possessed as a maid's daughter. My deep blue eyes remain unchanged, but everything framing them is foreign. Even my posture and silhouette are fuller, more mature, a stark contrast to the fragile girl who once walked the halls of the Hawthorne estate.

Anyone who knew Cassandra Romano could stare directly at me now and never see her. That is precisely what I need.

“You may go,” I say coldly to the makeup artist.

She nods quickly, gathers her tools, and hurries out of the suite.

The moment the door clicks shut, my eyes catch the glowing display of the television, and my entire body locks up.

Killian Hawthorne.

There he is.

The man I have watched from the shadows for four long years. The man whose life I have studied down to his every habit, schedule, and public appearance. He sits through an exclusive broadcast interview with the same ruthless, unreadable composure I remember so vividly.

My fingers tighten around the remote control.

Four years. Four years of watching the Hawthornes flourish while I rebuilt my shattered life from the ashes they left behind. I watched their empire expand, their stock prices surge, and their public image shine immaculate.

And Calista.

My jaw clenches at the thought of her. She played the role of the perfect CEO’s wife impeccably, always appearing at Killian's side for charity galas, high-society dinners, and press conferences. They are still married.

A bitter taste fills my mouth as she appears briefly on screen beside him, smiling as though she won a grand prize. I squeeze the plastic casing of the remote until my knuckles turn white.

The soft turn of the door handle breaks my thought.

I turn as Dorian steps into the room wearing a bespoke charcoal-black tuxedo tailored flawlessly to his broad frame. His dark hair is neatly styled, highlighting the sharp lines of his jaw. He adjusts his cuff links as he walks toward me, but the instant his gaze lands on my figure, he stops dead in his tracks.

His eyes linger over me, unmoving, as if in trance.

“Dorian,” I call softly.

He blinks, as though my voice snaps him back from a distant thought. “Are you ready?” he asks smoothly.

“Yes,” I reply, reaching for my beaded clutch.

He pauses, studying my expression. “Are you nervous about tonight?”

I hesitate before offering a small nod.

“You don't need to be.” He closes the distance between us. “Remember everything I’ve taught you. Keep your emotions locked away.”

I swallow hard, my pulse fluttering. “I can barely describe what I’m feeling,” I admit, my knuckles tight against the clutch. “I’ve spent four years dreaming of this moment. I want to destroy them. I want them to bleed the way I bled. But standing on the precipice of facing them... I’m terrified I’ll lose control.”

Dorian steps closer until he towers directly in front of me. He gently places his fingers beneath my chin, tilting my face upward until our eyes lock.

“It is natural to feel the weight of it,” he says softly, his tone steadying. “But remember what a single mistake will cost us. We have spent four years planning this game. Tonight is merely the opening move.”

His thumb brushes lightly against my chin before his grip loosens.

“Killian Hawthorne is no longer the man you loved. He is cold, calculating, and dangerously observant. If he senses even a fraction of hesitation or familiarity from you, he won't let it rest. He will dig until he uncovers the truth.”

My heart gives a heavy, nervous thud. Dorian’s expression hardens into a stern look.

“Think about the justice you are owed. And think about Lavender. You wouldn't want anything to jeopardize her safety because you allowed your temper to take the wheel, would you?”

My eyes drop instantly.

“Lavender.”

The mere thought of my daughter grounds me like an anchor. I close my eyes, drawing a slow, deliberate breath deep into my lungs.

“No,” I whisper.

I open my eyes again, stripping the uncertainty from my voice. I know what it took to reach this night. I will not ruin everything because of raw emotion.

My eyes drift back to the television screen one final time. Killian’s face fills the display. My chest tightens, but this time, I do not look away.

“Now it is their turn to suffer.”

Dorian inspects my face for a heartbeat before a slow, approving smile touches his lips. “There she is. The woman I’ve been waiting to see.”

I retrieve my clutch and turn toward the exit. Dorian slips his arm comfortably around my waist, guiding me out of the suite and into the corridor.

My heart hammers faster with every step toward the waiting car.

Four years ago, I fled the Hawthorne world as Cassandra Romano, a naive girl who believed love was a shield. Tonight, I walk back through their doors as Isadora Blackwell.

A stranger to them. A ghost in silk and gold.

And they have no idea that the woman they are about to welcome into their home is the very catalyst that will burn their empire to the ground.

Tonight, the game begins.
