Right before the gift hit the bottom of the trash bin, Marvin Smith came at me with boiling anger. His hands clenched as he stood an inch from my face, his eyes wide with rage.

"Tracy, someone gave you a gift out of kindness, and you tossed it without a second thought? Where's your sense of decency?" he snapped.

"If you're too high and mighty for this place, then pack up and leave. Stop being a thorn in everyone's side!"

I suppressed a chuckle as I stared back at the man before me, his eyes red with fury.

Everything about Marvin was a joke.

I let out a weary sigh and met his gaze. "If someone cared about their image, they wouldn't pull stunts like these for all to see. Plus, a decent person wouldn't get caught in such an act with other women."

The onlooking colleagues, who had been enjoying the show, looked at each other in disbelief.

Ever since I started working here, I never said no to Marvin. No matter how absurd his demands were, I would always carry them out to perfection.

To everyone, it was just the way things were.

Tracy, the ever-obedient servant to Marvin. Whatever he wanted could be his. With a snap of his fingers, I would make sure it would be there.

Marvin's face twisted into a sneer, as if I had told the funniest joke. "Tracy, did you think before you speak?" he scoffed.

"I've told you time and again, always remember your place before you do or say anything."

He emphasized on 'your place', making sure I caught the underlying threat.

He never forgot our disgraceful marriage. However, that did not stop him from playing favorites with his little assistant for all to see.

They were inseparable, doing everything together like two peas in a pod every day. It was clear to anyone with half a brain that they were soulmates.

"I'm serious, I know exactly what I'm saying and doing. If you didn't understand, feel free to review the security tapes."

I stepped back slowly. Without a second thought, I turned and walked away.

As I passed the trash can where the gift was in, I picked it up and flung it at the man trailing behind me.

"Handing out gifts before it's even your turn, Mr. Smith? You're quite the generous one. Looks like wedding bells are calling for you. Here's to a lifetime of happiness and loving family!"

I rounded the last corner of the office when Marvin's angry voice chased after me.

"Tracy, what's gotten into you today? You better straighten up and come back to apologize. I might even forgive you if you do that. Wendy's a single girl, and you're out here sullying her name. You owe her an apology, or I swear you'll regret it!"

I covered my ears and hurried away.

In the depths of winter, the world outside was a frozen wasteland.

With no taxis in sight for miles, I made my way home on foot.

It was not until I was nearly home that my body numb from the cold. Within my sight, I saw two familiar figures and instinctively headed the other way.

Wendy Jenkins greeted me with surprise. "Tracy, where are you off to?"

"Marvin's place is just over here. Come in and warm up a bit. Marvin's not the type to invite people over, but he won't kick you out if I insist."

Marvin stepped up, helping my foster mom to her feet with a solemn vow, "Mom, don't worry. I'll take care of dad's situation myself, and Tracy and I? We're not heading for divorce."His smug look made my stomach turn.It was like he had a million ways to keep me trapped, like I was fated to be under his grip forever.Once my foster mom calmed down, he sauntered over to me."So, do you want me to stick around here, or are we heading home?"I dropped my gaze. "Marvin, the divorce is happening, no matter what. And this baby? I'm not bringing it into the world."He gave a half-smile, looking out the window, "With the peanuts you're making, you can't even pay for your dad's surgery, let alone afford an abortion."A laugh escaped me, bitter and unexpected. No wonder he was so convinced I would never leave him. No matter what, he thought I would always need him.He was the one who made broken promises to me once, and now he was the one dragging me down into the depths.I came back t

"I'm sorry, I've been neglecting you lately. Let's go home, okay? Let's go home and bring this baby into the world. I promise I'll take good care of both of you!"He was already pulling me off the gurney as he spoke, "Tracy, I've got a really important meeting soon, but I'll drop you off at home and come back to be with you later."I laughed, a bitter sound, as I pushed him away. "We're getting a divorce, it's already settled. You don't get a say in this anymore."Marvin massaged his forehead, trying to keep his voice even and calm."Divorce is our business, and we should deal with it at home. Even if you take me to court, I won't agree to it. Tell me what's wrong, and I'll fix it," he pleaded. The nurse, losing her patience, snapped, "Are you going to proceed with the surgery or not?"Marvin bellowed, "Forget it!"He scooped me up and stormed out, not pausing for a second. It was not until we were nearly in the car that he finally slowed down. However, then, just as he had fe

With my belongings in tow, I booked a room at the hotel farthest from what I used to call home. Marvin bombarded me with calls and messages, more today than ever before. I did not respond to a single one.Dragging my weary body toward the hotel, the world suddenly spun, and I tumbled to the pavement. When my eyes fluttered open again, I found myself serenely resting in a hospital ward.Stepping out after the last drip of my IV, I caught sight of someone I had not expected — my foster mother. She was the one who raised me after my parents' tragic accident when I was just a child.Since finding my footing in my career, I had been sending her money every month, and she had been living a quiet life back home."Mom, what are you doing here? Are you sick?"She glanced at me, her eyes brimming with emotion, unable to speak. She shook her head, tears spilling over before she could find her words."No... I'm not."Before we could exchange another word, a furious voice bellowed from t

I turned a deaf ear to his tender call and retreated to the spare bedroom.I had barely settled into bed when the mattress beside me dipped, and Marvin edged closer with caution. "Back so soon and straight to bed? Are you feeling okay? Maybe we should get you checked out at the hospital?" I did not answer, but he kept steadied on, relentlessly. "Tracy, I slaved away in the kitchen all day, whipping up all your favorite meals. It's not every day we get this chance, so come on, let's enjoy a meal together."He showed me his hand, marked with blisters. "I even burned myself for you, so come on, cut me some slack. You weren't always this distant." Annoyed, I shifted away from his touch, "I'm not hungry. I just want to sleep." However, he persisted, scooting closer once more. "I'll sleep with you, and we can have a bite before bed." I dodged him again, but cornered myself. His patience snapped, and he sat up, his voice a low, angry rumble. "Tracy, don't be ridiculous!" I sto

Time and again, he left me in the dust for someone else, never seeing me. I have been aching to break free. However, the good times, like a stack of golden tickets, kept me hoping he would turn back into the man I once knew. I was all worn out now. I could not keep waiting.Clutching the arm of the man in front of me, my grip so fierce that blood trickled down to my fingertips, Marvin finally frowned and released me. I stared at him and said, clear as day, "Marvin, I've got my priorities straight, I want a divorce. It's time we both let each other go."Marvin's eyes frantically shifted as he yanked me into the spare room. His hands clamped down on my shoulders, his whole body quivering with rage, yet he fought to keep his composure."Tracy, I know you've been put through the wringer, and I haven't made it right yet. I've been swamped, but I promise, when things settle down, I'll make it up to you, just like old times."Why would you even think of divorce?"Try to see it from m

Struggling to sit up, I shook my head, a sharp pain in my belly making it impossible to get a word out.My coworker, standing off to the side with hands on hips, glared at me. "Look at you, getting caught red-handed in someone else's house. We might as well have walked in on you cheating. Got any excuses?"You're nothing but a shameless flirt, always trying to worm your way to the top. Makes sense that you were aiming for the supervisor's bed all along."If you're not the mistress, then what's your excuse for being at Mr. Smith's place, sneaking around like a thief?"...The room was filled with relentless jeers. Wendy kept wiping away tears that were not there, her voice breaking."Tracy, I get it, you're ambitious, and that's fine. Everyone screws up. Just say you're sorry, and I'll let it go."Just don't let it happen again, alright? It's not a good look."You're lucky you ran into someone as forgiving as me. Anyone else might have made you pay with your life..."I tried to
