Susan's POV

My lips keep trembling as I thought of ways to disclose the shocking news to Ethan without adding to his list of worries.

I wouldn't want to be the reason for his tears when I ought to prevent that.

The situation got messier when the female cop reminded me that we had a few minutes left.

From the look on her face, she couldn't wait to take Ethan back to the cell.

Instantly, my senses returned to normal.

I knew I needed to speak faster to avoid missing out on the golden opportunity.

The next few minutes can't be predicted in Ethan's case.

After confronting Maria in such a despicable manner, I wouldn't be surprised if she started thinking of pressing charges against Ethan.

The fact that I got her kids involved in the shit made it more complicated.

I should have known that she doesn't joke with them.

“You just heard what the cop said, didn't you? If you are not going to speak up, I advise you to leave now.

You could have at least stayed back home if you're coming here would be meaningless,” Ethan yelled at me.

The yelling pierced my heart like a dagger. He's getting tired of the silent treatment.

I'm beginning to witness my husband in a different dimension.

“Maria promised to order your release and drop all charges on the condition that you stop getting closer to her.” I took a deep pause before continuing.

“That's not all; she also intends to get a court restraining order against you,” I finally found my tongue and voiced out after several failed attempts

The anxiety forced me to speak faster as though I had a hot yam In my mouth.

“No way," she said. This is a joke, right? She can't possibly do that to me.

There must be a mix-up somewhere.” Ethan scoffed as he doubted me.

It was the shortest smile ever.

I knew it came from a place of pain.

“I wish it was a joke, Ethan. When I spoke to her about the kids, she was infuriated and claimed they aren't yours,” I buttressed.

That was the part that pushed Ethan's button.

I didn't even know when he slammed the desk in frustration.

“They're my sons.

What the fuck is she talking about?” Ethan sparked outrageously.

He sounded so sure, as though he secretly carried out a DNA test that proved that he was the Father of the triplets.

Not until when I asked Ethan if he had any proof, was the absolute decorum enclosed in him.

He suddenly lost the strength to speak.

If I was meeting him for the first time, I would have sworn that his vocal cords had been destroyed.

“Ethan, listen to me,”

I held his hands closer to mine.

“Accept the restraining order for your freedom. The company needs you. People are beginning to spread rumours about you.

You should know better that this isn't cool for the company,” I advised him. But it seemed like the advice fell on deaf ears.

I watched Ethan stand up even when we still had a few minutes left to settle the scores.

“Tell Maria to kiss my ass. I won't bend to her wish.

I will find a way to sort this out with my lawyer,” Ethan notified me.

I tried to make him see the reasons why Maria's suggestion was the perfect solution, and he neglected me.

He left me stunned and asked questions. I can't fathom his height of negligence.

I wasn't the one who got arrested, but I still feel more remorseful than him.

Shortly after Ethan's departure, the female cop walked up to me and asked me to leave.

From the way she stared at me during my discussion with Ethan, I could tell that she's been waiting for the perfect moment to walk me out like a piece of shit.

I just suffered my second humiliation for the second time in less than five minutes.

Firstly, it was from Ethan who I least expected. And now, it's from the annoying female cop which I envisaged.

With my face drowning in the pool of shame, I walked majestically to my car. Immediately I got inside, my phone rang.

At first, I ignored it because I never thought it was necessary.

With a troubled heart, a telephone conversation was the last thing I wanted to engage myself in.

I wasn't even bothered if it was a potential client on the line.

How can I hold on to a spirited conversation when I'm not in the right frame of mind?

After the second time, I got furious and was compelled to check the caller.

Behold, it turned out to be Paul, Ethan's cousin.

My heart skipped a thousand times. I had a feeling that he might have found out about his cousin's arrest.

I braced up and let out a deep sigh while trying to stay calm.

I wouldn't want to put up a disappointing performance over the phone.

“Hi, Paul.

Sorry, I missed your call. I was sleeping,” I lied.

I spoke in a soft tone and yawned just to convince Paul that I was telling the truth.

I figured that was the only way to get rid of him over the phone.

All hell will let loose if he finds out about Ethan's arrest.

“Is it true?”

That was the first thing on his lips.

He wasn't bothered about my apology for not answering the phone at the first attempt.

“What's true?” I asked, trying to pretend like I didn't know what he was talking about.

I would rather not be too forward. I wanted him to do the talking.

“Come on, Suzy.

You're going to pretend like you are not aware of Ethan's arrest?” Paul dropped the bombshell.

How he found out about it wasn't known to me.

This was precisely what I avoided when I pleaded with Ethan to accept Maria's ridiculous condition.

Too bad he didn't pay attention to me.

We wouldn't have found ourselves in this pathetic situation when I warned him not to confront Maria at the award ceremony.

Susan's POVI was stuck between exposing the truth about Ethan's arrest or keeping mute.“Why aren't you saying a word? He was arrested, wasn't he?Damn! I knew it,” Paul concluded really fast without verifying from me. My silence was enough for him to harbor such thoughts in his head.“Why did you hide It from me, his cousin? Where are you now? We need to speak,” Paul won't stop raising his voice at me. I tried to calm his nerves and I sucked at it.He hated the fact that I kept the arrest away from him. He felt neglected and insulted.“I will be heading to your home in a bit now.” I lied. It would have been a risk to tell him that I was at her station. Once he gets to know about that, he'd definitely ask for the address.“I'd be waiting.Don't leave me hanging,” he said.He ended the phone before I got the chance to speak further. I felt a giant relief when he ended the phone. The way he interrogated me about Ethan's arrest was quite shocking and alarming. He hit the nail on t

  • Secrets and Second Chances    CHAPTER 1: The day hope died

MARIA'S POV I raced up the stairs, my heart dancing with every step. Three years, three long years of cold, empty marriage, and now, finally, I had a reason to hope. I was pregnant. I could hardly breathe as I imagined the look on Ethan's face. Maybe, just maybe, this baby would change everything. Maybe it could make him see me and love me so much. Though he did, it was just a little, and ever since we got to the third year of our marriage, he started behaving so distant. I burst through the door, my cheeks flushed with excitement. But as soon as I stepped inside I heard muffled voices. I paused. My smile froze on my lips. I shook my head, pushing the doubt away. No, this was a happy day. But when I opened the door to our bedroom, my world shattered. There he was. Ethan, my husband was on the couch with a woman sitting casually across his lap like she belonged there. Her lips pressed against his, their bodies entwined as if I didn't exist. "Ethan!" I

Maria's POV "Come back here”. I heard a voice say behind me just when I was almost out of the house. A shiver ran down my spine and my legs felt so weak that I couldn't turn around. I already knew who had that voice; it was no other person but Ethan. His voice was ice cold and dripping with so much venom. "What did you just say?" he asked me, and before I could speak, he raised his finger in warning. “Don't even try to lie." I swallowed hard, sweat beads forming on my head, and I glanced up at Susan, who had her arms folded across her chest with a sly smile on her lips. I had wanted to leave peacefully without any trouble but now I guess that peace was far from me. "She threatened me, Ethan," Susan said, and in seconds, she was already beside him, holding his arms and casting a hateful glance my way. I felt so small, so insignificant my life had changed in just a few minutes. "She threatens to kill me, Ethan," Susan said, and without even waiting for confirmation, Ethan's

  • Secrets and Second Chances    CHAPTER 3: Leaving for good

Maria’s POV Being unconscious was something which I had come to cherish and I didn't wish to wake up to this cruel world. I wanted to die. I opened my eyes wearily and glanced at the white ceiling which was a stark contrast to my room. I tried to get up and mad pain protested through me, breaking down every strength I had left. My whole body felt numb and weak and I couldn't even lift a finger. I must have been unconscious for a long time as I glanced to my left, there was a machine beside my bed beeping. I tried to sit up, but I couldn't; the pain was too much, and tears were brimming in my eyes. The only thing I could remember was that Susan had pushed me and that was it, the darkness closing in on me. I was half aware of my surroundings, and I tried to call for help, but my tongue lay limp and dry in my mouth. I heard a door open faintly, and someone walked in, but I just couldn't make out the figure. I felt someone touch my hands, my vision was blurry and I felt like

Six months Later. My life had changed since I signed those divorce papers. I now live in Massachusetts. And I needed something to do. I couldn't afford to stay idle, not with three babies relying on me. I had no choice but to start over. My hands trembled as I put them to work, scrolling through pages of job listings at two in the morning, the sound of babies breathing softly behind me. Nothing felt right. Everything looks like I could barely pay for diapers, let alone cover the growing mountains of bills. I had to figure something out— fast. It wasn't until two weeks later while struggling to soothe one of the boys with a blanket I had hand-sewn for him, that the idea came to me. “Homemade personalized baby blanket”. Something soft, simple, and full of love. Something new mothers would treasure like I did with my boys. I didn't wait. Immediately I set up an online store that same night, listing my first part of the blanket. It wasn't much but it was a start. I never t

Maria’s POV. The Mercedes Benz AMG glided to a stop before me as I stood at the airport entrance, my dark sunshades managed to conceal my features but not my red succulent lips and my high fashion sense. I got the stares a lot, which I was already used to; I stood tall and magnificent as the driver rounded the corner and got the door open for me. "Mommy!" Timmy, the third of the triplets, shrieked tugging at me with my designer bag. "What is it, darling?" I asked, smiling down at him. "Are we going home?" Ted, the first of the triplets, asked me, holding onto his kite. He had asked the question which his brother had wanted to ask. But before I could answer his question, Theo, ever inquisitive with his sharp eyes, looked up at me. He was the smartest of the triplets and was ready to ask questions until he had answers. "When are we going back to Massachusetts? How long are we staying in Louisiana? Do you think we will ever make new friends, Mommy?" All the questions he threw a

Susan's POVThe rays of the morning sun flickered through my window as I rubbed my blurry eyes. “Goodness me! How did I sleep this long?” I exclaimed in shock after glaring at the wall clock. I wasn't a coffee drinker, but I lost sleep the previous night thinking about Ethan. His freedom matters to me more than anything else In the world. I woke up with a massive tombstone in my heart that might not be rolled away for generations to come. It feels to me like I'm carrying the world on my back. All thanks to Maria, who has given Ethan and me a run for our money. How she amassed so much wealth in a few years still baffles me. Not just the sudden wealth that bothers me; Maria also became stronger, more influential, and more powerful than ever before. She wasn't the same person I usually bullied around a couple of years ago. To think that she even had the guts to raise her hands on me. “I need to figure out how she made her money. Maria's POVIf Andrew hadn't consented, I wouldn't have allowed that insult from Susan like a hard pill.“I don't know if your ears have been infected by a deadly virus, but you need to understand this. I'm Naomi Jackson. This is going to be the last time I'll talk about it. Lastly, you have three minutes left.” I warned Susan.I lost count of how many times I've done that already. She probably feigned deaf ears to trigger my anger. I guess it's working already.“Why are you running away from the past like a coward that you are? Don't you wanna talk about it?” Susan got on my nerves again.I struggled to breathe. My hands were yearning to strangle Susan's neck, but I moaned to control them.I ignored Susan's shenanigan while I concentrated on Andrew. He's the reason I am in the mess. "If you don't call her to order, I will be forced to kick her out. And trust me, there's nothing you or anyone can do about that,“ I told Andrew while I went to an isolated corner. I folded my arms

Fuck the cops and let's go check who's that,” I told Andrew while turning down his suggestion. The sad face he put up shows that he wasn't pleased that I didn't follow his command but who cares? I'm all about my instincts. I wasn't going to let Andrew play the lead role in my life when I was old enough to make certain decisions for myself. As I stepped outside the vehicle, I checked behind me and noticed that Andrew was following my trail. “Don't worry, just go. I got this,” Andrew assured me. We were like super crime fighter couples. Situations like this only happen in the movies. As we strode quietly to the gate, we met with the security who was fast asleep. Andrew and I shared a telling look. It's obvious that the same thing for Security. Another loud knock was heard on the gate that forced the security off his position. The m

Andrew understood the assignment and knew I needed to be left alone And the kids? They won't be disturbing me with their unnecessary demands. Fortunately for me, Patty was there to put them to satisfy their cravings. I don't know what I could have done without her presence. We finally got home after a fifteen-minute ride. The relief I felt that can't be explained. I could only think of one thing; heading inside my sturdy to reflect on everything that has happened in the last couple of minutes. "Please don't go yet.I wanna have a word with you," Andrew whispered to me when he realized I was making plans to leave. “Mom, aren't you coming with us?” Timmy asked me after he saw me stay back inside the car when everyone was out. And lastly, my name isn't Maria. For fucking sake, I'm Naomi Jackson. How difficult is it for you to understand that?”“Naomi Jackson? I don't think so. That's the greatest lie ever told in the history of mankind. Of course, you're Maria. My eyes aren't deceiving me,” Ethan argued as though his life depended on it. He had every reason to believe that Maria was playing a fast one on him.Deep down, he was hoping that the cameramen would emerge from their hidden place and say. “It's a prank. Of course, her name is Maria. She just wanted to know your reaction, and you fell for it,”Sadly, none of that happened. Instead, Maria denied knowing E
