Susan's POV

Exactly what you heard, ma'am.

I believe you haven't lost your hearing ability.

Your husband isn't here. He left without saying a word. This is the last time I am going to say this to you.

And if you don't leave now, you might replace him in the cell," cop Aleeyah threatened me.

She didn't even consider my mental health.

After observing her rudeness towards me lately, I was starting to ask myself if I've offended her in the past without knowing.

“Leave this place? You must be a clown because that certainly sounds funny to me.

That's never happening. You don't expect me to leave without my husband, do you? It's all your fault.

Why did you let him leave like that without dropping a message for me?” I argued with the loudest voice.

I was prepared to cause a scene in the station without minding if it would lead to my arrest.

It was the same attitude that made Maria have Ethan locked up in the cell for 48 hrs.

And I am not willing to let the snake calamity befall me.

“I see you're very obstinate, just like your ex-convict of a husband.

But guess what? All of that is ending now.

It's time I showed you the stuff I'm made of,” the female cop said to me.

Just when I thought she was kidding, she reached out for her landline and called on a superior to get me arrested.

Upon hearing that, my nostrils stood up.

My senses returned to normal, and I knew I needed to make a move.

I wasn't alone.

Paul and I seemed to be thinking in the same direction.

I was surprised when he patted me on the shoulder, signaling our exit. “It's time to leave now while we still can.

We are never going to win over these people.”

That was the only time he made a move since we got to the station.

I was starting to think that he was secretly working against me.

The moment he saw that I wasn't ready to comply anymore, he dragged me outside like a criminal.

It was at that point I realized that another cop was heading in our direction.

I never saw that coming.

If it weren't for Paul's attentiveness, I could have been caught and thrown inside the cell.

“That was close.

So close to being arrested. That cop is worse than a witch.

She's got zero conscience towards humanity,” I panted heavily as he got back to the car.

It was worse than a near-death experience.

It felt like my heart was about to get ripped off my body.

“So what do we do now? We certainly can't return to Maria.

We promised not to show up at her house anymore.

I intend to hold on to that.” Paul asked. He seemed to be running out of ideas.

The fact that Ethan's phone is in my custody worsened it.

It also reduced our chances of reaching out to him to find out about his destination.

“I've got an idea.

This will work. It just popped into my head.” Paul snapped his hands for a solution.

The one we've been yearning for all along.

I felt relieved despite not hearing from him first. The fact that he's got a solution was the assistance I needed.

His recent ideas have been helpful. He's come through for us in clutch moments.

He suggested that we approach Maria with a different strategy.

Despite my doubt, it turned out to be my best decision ever.

“How about we call his father? Perhaps he might know a thing or two about his son's whereabouts,” Paul proposed.

This time, he got it all wrong.

It was the dumbest thing I've heard in a while.

To even imagine that it came from a brilliant champ like Paul.

To say I'm disappointed at him would be an understatement

I shook my head disdainfully and rested on the steering wheel for a matter of seconds.

Then I lifted it up.

Without saying a word, I proceed to start the car.

Unfortunately, Paul stopped me just as I was about to drive us out. “You can't possibly leave like that.

Didn't you hear what I said? I thought you were going to say something about it,”

“That's the shit I'm referring to. I guess my actions were the response you needed,” I lost my cool.

“Did you actually say that, or was it your clone? Did you even listen to yourself at all?

Should I remind you that Ethan hasn't spoken to his father in years?” I refreshed Paul's memory with a shout and made him speechless.

“I never knew.

He barely speaks about his Father,. Paul stuttered.

It took him plenty of time to put the words together.

I forced myself to laugh after I heard him say that.

Paul keeps putting up some surprising performance in the last couple of minutes.

“Are you truly his cousin? Because if you were, you'd understand things like this,” I mocked Paul.

I took back my words when I recalled that Paul had been out of the country for nearly a decade.

He returned to the States on Ethan's order.

I doubt if Ethan's father is even aware of his son's name arrest.

Even if he was, he would never be concerned

He's rich and influential.

He could have ordered Ethan's release immediately.

His affluence in the society is enough to make him do that.

Unfortunately, his horrible past with his family was the reason I didn't go to him

If there's an award ceremony for a deadbeat Dad, Ethan's Father will surely be crowned the undisputed champion

He got separated from Ethan's mother for a much younger lady.

As though that weren't enough, he distanced himself from Ethan as though Ethan weren't his biological son

Little wonder Ethan never talks about his father.

The hate towards his father has become stronger than the Rock of Gibraltar.

The man might be still alive and kicking, but to Ethan, he's dead and non-existent

  • Secrets and Second Chances    CHAPTER 1: The day hope died

MARIA'S POV I raced up the stairs, my heart dancing with every step. Three years, three long years of cold, empty marriage, and now, finally, I had a reason to hope. I was pregnant. I could hardly breathe as I imagined the look on Ethan's face. Maybe, just maybe, this baby would change everything. Maybe it could make him see me and love me so much. Though he did, it was just a little, and ever since we got to the third year of our marriage, he started behaving so distant. I burst through the door, my cheeks flushed with excitement. But as soon as I stepped inside I heard muffled voices. I paused. My smile froze on my lips. I shook my head, pushing the doubt away. No, this was a happy day. But when I opened the door to our bedroom, my world shattered. There he was. Ethan, my husband was on the couch with a woman sitting casually across his lap like she belonged there. Her lips pressed against his, their bodies entwined as if I didn't exist. "Ethan!" I

Maria's POV "Come back here”. I heard a voice say behind me just when I was almost out of the house. A shiver ran down my spine and my legs felt so weak that I couldn't turn around. I already knew who had that voice; it was no other person but Ethan. His voice was ice cold and dripping with so much venom. "What did you just say?" he asked me, and before I could speak, he raised his finger in warning. “Don't even try to lie." I swallowed hard, sweat beads forming on my head, and I glanced up at Susan, who had her arms folded across her chest with a sly smile on her lips. I had wanted to leave peacefully without any trouble but now I guess that peace was far from me. "She threatened me, Ethan," Susan said, and in seconds, she was already beside him, holding his arms and casting a hateful glance my way. I felt so small, so insignificant my life had changed in just a few minutes. "She threatens to kill me, Ethan," Susan said, and without even waiting for confirmation, Ethan's

Maria’s POV Being unconscious was something which I had come to cherish and I didn't wish to wake up to this cruel world. I wanted to die. I opened my eyes wearily and glanced at the white ceiling which was a stark contrast to my room. I tried to get up and mad pain protested through me, breaking down every strength I had left. My whole body felt numb and weak and I couldn't even lift a finger. I must have been unconscious for a long time as I glanced to my left, there was a machine beside my bed beeping. I tried to sit up, but I couldn't; the pain was too much, and tears were brimming in my eyes. The only thing I could remember was that Susan had pushed me and that was it, the darkness closing in on me. I was half aware of my surroundings, and I tried to call for help, but my tongue lay limp and dry in my mouth. I heard a door open faintly, and someone walked in, but I just couldn't make out the figure. I felt someone touch my hands, my vision was blurry and I felt like

Six months Later. My life had changed since I signed those divorce papers. I now live in Massachusetts. And I needed something to do. I couldn't afford to stay idle, not with three babies relying on me. I had no choice but to start over. My hands trembled as I put them to work, scrolling through pages of job listings at two in the morning, the sound of babies breathing softly behind me. Nothing felt right. Everything looks like I could barely pay for diapers, let alone cover the growing mountains of bills. I had to figure something out— fast. It wasn't until two weeks later while struggling to soothe one of the boys with a blanket I had hand-sewn for him, that the idea came to me. “Homemade personalized baby blanket”. Something soft, simple, and full of love. Something new mothers would treasure like I did with my boys. I didn't wait. Immediately I set up an online store that same night, listing my first part of the blanket. It wasn't much but it was a start. I never t

  • Secrets and Second Chances    CHAPTER 5: BACK

Maria’s POV. The Mercedes Benz AMG glided to a stop before me as I stood at the airport entrance, my dark sunshades managed to conceal my features but not my red succulent lips and my high fashion sense. I got the stares a lot, which I was already used to; I stood tall and magnificent as the driver rounded the corner and got the door open for me. "Mommy!" Timmy, the third of the triplets, shrieked tugging at me with my designer bag. "What is it, darling?" I asked, smiling down at him. "Are we going home?" Ted, the first of the triplets, asked me, holding onto his kite. He had asked the question which his brother had wanted to ask. But before I could answer his question, Theo, ever inquisitive with his sharp eyes, looked up at me. He was the smartest of the triplets and was ready to ask questions until he had answers. "When are we going back to Massachusetts? How long are we staying in Louisiana? Do you think we will ever make new friends, Mommy?" All the questions he threw a

Maria's POV Some say before you die, you see your life flash before your eyes while you do nothing about it. In my case, it was fundamentally different. My heart stopped pumping blood as I died a thousand times from the inside. The imaginary death occurred when Timmy popped the question in the presence of Ethan. The son of a bitch wouldn't take his eyes off me. He paid attention as if his life depended on it while he waited for me to respond. I was grateful for Timmy's tiny voice, which made it difficult for the audience to grasp what he said. I looked clueless and helpless, hoping the ground would engulf me so I could be safe from the dilemma. “No, son. He isn't your father. And he can never be your father,” I told Timmy, my son. My response shattered Ethan's heart to shreds, and he was sweaty despite the air conditioner being on. Before that moment, I wasn't a staunch advocate for dishonesty. I've always taught my sons not to lie, but today, I had no choice

Susan's POV I tried to wrap my head around her reason for appearing that way and I ended up shooting point-blank “Take this,” she handed the documents to me before I could ask what they meant. “What's this about? I still don't get it,” I asked with a hint of confusion after examining the documents. “I'm pretty sure you can read, don't you?” She mocked me with the response. I stopped asking questions. Instead, I glanced through the documents to grasp their content. “The court restraining order. You want me to sign it on Ethan's behalf?” I asked after reading through. “You certainly haven't lost your reading ability, have you? Isn't that what you want?” She asked me. I nodded my head in response as she handed me a pen. I thought about countless things as I signed the agreement. Despite how small the pen was, I still found it difficult to hold it firmly. Susan's POV“Once again, I apologize for making you feel that way. Can we please talk about this?” Paul asked nicely shortly after dropping the bombshell that left Maria flabbergasted. I didn't say a word to contribute to the issue. My presence has already caused a major disaster. All I care about is making a difference and amending my wrongdoings. “Mom,” a tiny voice distracted us and forced us to a halt. Shortly after, Maria's triplets ran to embrace her. They weren't alone because Andrew, Maria's new man, accompanied them. Seeing Andrew made me want to vanish into thin air. His presence automatically reduced Ethan's chances of coming out of prison. It would have been better if Paul and I just had to deal with Maria alone. We were this close to getting her to our side. The look is written all over her face already. No, Paul and I have to put in some extra effort if we want to scale through. “You again?Haven't you done enough? What are you doing in our home?” Andrew raged

Fortunately for us, Paul's outfit best describes a perfect gentleman and a potential client. As I watched Paul approach Maria's gate, I prepared myself to swing into action. I avoided every distraction that would cause me to take my eyes off Paul for a second. I was scared when no one showed up to attend to Paul. It feels like my whole life was shattered. Not just me, I could picture Paul losing all hope and confidence from a distance. He might not have admitted it, but his reaction says it all. I lost count of how many times he facepalms. I won't be surprised if he starts walking back to the car after several failed attempts. Suddenly, I heard the door opening from inside just when it seemed like all hope was lost. I don't know how long I intend to put up with this," I asked Paul after I stepped outside. His body language made it difficult for me to predict his next move. So I stood there glaring at him and widened my ears to avoid missing out on every detail he intended to divulge. Before I could speak further, he entered my car and made it seem like he wanted to steal it. However, my fears were allayed when I realized that Paul wasn't seated in front of the steering wheel. Despite that, I was still bothered. Paul has barely said a word since we stepped outside. "What's this about? I'd be lying if I said I understand what's going on right now.
