Susan's POV

I planned to return to the car when Paul did the unthinkable.

Rather than revealing to Ethan about our destination, he lied that I was at his place.

What a relief!

I returned to Paul with a redefined hope that my little secret hadn't been exposed.

“She's at your place already? That sounds good. I'll be coming right away,” Ethan announced.

How stubborn he is.

He just doesn't know when to give up.

I felt tempted to speak up and put an end to everything.

Instead, I chose to remain silent and let Paul finish what he started.

I struggled to believe that he was going to handle the situation.

“That won't be necessary, Ethan. I don't want you to make a fruitless journey.

Your wife will return home to you first thing tomorrow in one piece,” Paul defended me as he stopped Ethan's plans.

“Okay, mate.

I trust you can handle the situation,” Ethan gave up easily.

That was so rare of him.

The Ethan I know wouldn't stop at nothing until he sees me.

“If she's hearing me right now, I want her to know that I love her so much.

I miss her too. My life is incomplete without her,” Ethan added.

His voice sounded a bit faded. I could tell how emotional he must be feeling at the moment.

Just before he got off the phone with Paul, he apologized to Paul for their previous misunderstanding.

That was the highlight of the telephone conversation.

I felt this joy inside of me after listening to Ethan's apology.

That was the part I had anticipated the most.

Minutes after the call ended, I rushed to embrace Paul as tiny tears dropped in my eyes.

“Thank you so much for everything. Thank you for not selling me out. This surely means a lot to me,”

“I was never going to sell you out for no reason,” Paul assured me after passing me a white piece of clothing to wipe my tears.

“Now let's get down to business,” he said to me.

The next minute, he was already banging on the door so hard.

He did the exact thing he had previously warned me against.

“Don't you think that was too loud?” I cautioned Paul.

I became worried for his sake. I forgot that I initiated the movement.

“It's time we let someone know how serious we are.

If we don't do it this way, they're never going to show up,” Paul defended his actions.

I didn't pick any offense from his attitude.

It was precisely what I wanted anyway.

Suddenly, I heard some footsteps approaching from inside.

Hurriedly, I notified Paul. “Did you hear that? It seems someone is coming.

I want to be certain I am not the only one hearing things that never existed,”

“Surely, I did.

I guess the plan worked after all,”

Paul smirked.

What a genius of a man.

For every second that goes by, I see a thousand reasons why he's so important to me.

“You again?

I thought there were two left already. What are you still doing here?” The lady showed up again.

The look on her face proved that she never expected to still see us around.

“Well, you left with the promise to return. Too bad you didn't fulfill your promise.

You don't expect us to leave, do you?” I took over from Paul to confront the lady.

It was as though Paul knew what I wanted.

He put me in charge of handling the situation my way.

“If you are smart enough, you should know that Ethan's Father doesn't want to see you.

You could have left when you had the chance too.

Too bad you wasted your time waiting for someone who may never show up,” the lady said to me.

She looked me in the face and told me that Ethan's Father had refused to see me.

“There must be a mix-up somewhere.

Why doesn't he want to see us? Did you explain our identity to him?” Paul stepped in immediately.

His inclusion was quite needed. I was slowly losing my cool.

The only thing I thought about was hurting the lady.

“You're not deaf, are you?

I just emphasized that Ethan's Father doesn't want to see either of you.

What part of that don't you understand?” She yelled at Paul.

She addressed Paul in a different kind of tone used on me

I wasn't paying attention to their heated argument.

While they yelled at each other, I was plotting a way to find my way inside the mansion.

All I required was a little distraction and that's precisely what Paul was doing for me.

The moment I realized that the lady had focused all her attention on Paul, I quickly rushed inside using the tiny space she had created for me.

My speed was so much that I nearly pushed her to the ground.

Soon, Paul joined me inside as he kept wondering when I came up with the plan since I never discussed it with him while we were locked outside

“How dare you?

I never invited you to my home.

Now you need to leave, else I'll have the cops on you,” She threatened us.

“Call the cops on us?

That must be the greatest joke I've heard in a long time,” I mocked her

Even when she grabbed her phone, I wasn't scared.

My only Joy is that I finally found my way inside and no one was going to make me leave without speaking to Ethan's Father.

“You may want to drop the phone.

Calling the cops is pointless.

Should the cops arrive here, you might end up being arrested instead,” Paul advised as he sent fear into the mind of the mystery lady.

“What the hell is going on here?”

A baritone voice echoed.

Just then, Ethan's Father showed up with a three-year-old boy.

“Mummy,” the little boy said while running to meet the lady.

“Mommy?”

My voice trailed off.

Numerous unanswered questions in my head.

Susan's POV“Mom, where have you been? Dad and I have searched everywhere for you. Thank goodness I found you now. Can you please sing for me until I fall asleep?" the little boy spoke to the Lady. When he referred to her as his mother, I knew something was wrong. It confirmed the suspicion inside of me. I could sense a mother/son relationship when I saw one. “Wait a minute, Mom, who's that lady, and what does she want? I've never seen her around here before. Is she your sister? You two have this striking resemblance,” The boy asked the lady after a disrespectful glance at me and Paul. He treated us like a commoner. He is just a kid, yet he sounded like a mature man bestowed with so much wisdom. Until he talked about it, I never knew that she and I shared a striking resemblance. Only a few people will think in that direction. “Kelly, Darling. She's not my sister. She's your Daddy's guest. This is her first time visiting. That's why you haven't met her before,” she clarified

Susan's POVIt's been over ten minutes since the lady left to call Ethan's Father, and she hasn't returned yet. She made us believe that she wasn't going to stay too long. She made us wait outside with high hopes. Now everything is starting to look like a joke to us. The bitch fucking played us!I should have known that she was lying the moment she welcomed us with hostility. She barely spent ten minutes with us and I could tell how disgusting she was. It's becoming a major concern for me. Although, the same thing can't be said about Paul. Unlike me who's restless, Paul appears to be calm. That was the same thing he did when we visited Maria's mansion. His level of understanding, perseverance, and patience needs to be studied at the university. As we waited for the lady to show up, I kept on glaring at my wristwatch while checking the weather for what seemed like an impending turbulent heavy downpour. “Okay, enough of the madness already. This is the height of it all. Since

Susan's POVPaul covered my mouth with his palm to prevent the workers from hearing me. He forced me inside the car and shut the door. It goes to show how careful he wants to be. “Have you suddenly lost your mind? Why would you even come up with a dangerous plan like that? What if you get caught?” Paul berated me for my suggestion. I was slightly disappointed in him. I thought he was going to take sides with me. I was wrong. And this time, we both seemed to be on different pages. “Come on, Paul. I did nothing wrong. It was just a harmless suggestion. Besides, you don't even have a better option.” I protested.I justified my actions with a thousand explanations, yet it wasn't enough to convince Paul to work with me. He still thinks I'm losing my mind. I decided not to speak with Paul about the idea anymore to avoid being reported to the police.“How about we go talk to his Father? I believe that could help,” Paul suggested. I didn't waste time kicking against it. Mine sounded

Susan's POVBurying my face in shame and bowing to the overwhelming pressure from the staff, I brought out my phone to FaceTime Ethan upon the staff's request. It was the only way I could restore sanity in the company. I've lost numerous battles in the last 24 hours already. I am not ready to lose the hardworking staff. They're beginning to lose their confidence in me. They represent the company's progress.Without their immense hard work and contribution, Frontline Gold Mine might have suffered a significant setback. I Face timed Ethan. I was scared that he wasn't going to respond. I can't imagine being humiliated by Ethan in the presence of the staff. They will surely mock me for the rest of my life. “Hey, Susan. Thank goodness you called. I've been trying to reach out to you for hours. I was scared that something had happened to you. It's good to know that you're safe now.” Ethan hurriedly spoke as though he was being chased with a machete. I haven't been gone for lon

Susan's POV“Can you quit the questions and start coming immediately? It's an hour before the company closes for the day. You'd get the answers you seek once you show up,” Paul disclosed. He terminated the conversation without giving me the chance to speak further. He must have been sick and tired of my constant questions. Rather than staying back to worry my head, I drove straight to the company. I didn't bother calling Paul for more because I knew he would never answer the phone. Upon arriving at the company, the atmosphere I met didn't seem too encouraging for me. The whole place was quiet and void of staff, as though someone died. I got worried and glared at my wristwatch to ensure it wasn't the closing hour. “The company hasn't closed for the day yet. So where the fuck is everyone?" I asked myself rhetorically. “Over here,” a voice responded from a distance, even though I wasn't expecting anyone to hear me. From a distance, I saw Paul waving his hands while signaling me

  • Secrets and Second Chances    Chapter 23: Picking Up The Broken Pieces

Susan's POV I returned to where my car was parked and wept like a child who just lost her mother. Ethan made me regret what I did. He had zero regard for me. I wished I never made a move to ensure he was released from prison. I wished I had sat back and listened to Ethan when he assured me that his lawyer was going to handle the situation. Maria made me believe that the freedom of Ethan rested on her shoulders and I believed her. I fell for her tricks without doing my homework. Sadly for me, I failed woefully. I am sure she must be celebrating with a bottle of champagne right now after using me to completely get rid of Ethan. Disgusting stuff! What was I supposed to do anyway? I couldn't stay neutral while Maria outshines me. That was never going to happen even though I knew my actions were going to upset Ethan. The thought of Maria having complete dominance over me was one of the reasons I confronted her for Ethan's release. As it stands now, I might have ju

  • Secrets and Second Chances    Chapter 22: Clustered Emotions

Susan's POV It was shocking to Ethan to defend his parents as though his life depended on it. I thought he never liked his parents. Paul giggled. He finds Ethan kind of hilarious. He wasn't intimidated by Ethan's rage. He was confident that Ethan was never going to hit him. “So you're going to hit me in the face because I said the truth? I bet it's a hard pill for you to swallow. Did you finally decide to defend the same parent you never liked? Where's this fake emotion coming from? You are just a bloody coward. Hit me if you got the balls,” Rather than bowing out of the drama, Paul continued to provoke Ethan. Ethan's punch was left hanging up In the air. What Paul said hit him so hard that he lost consciousness. The Ethan I know would land a blow on Ethan a long time ago. Despite Ethan's refusal to fight Paul, I still didn't get closer to him. From what I know, it might be a trick to lure me to his side and become the scapegoat “So I thought. Fix your home

  • Secrets and Second Chances    Chapter 21: Actions and Consequences

Susan's POV “Ethan, please I need you to promise me you won't get mad at me after the confession. It might as well get you upset, and I wouldn't want that to happen,” I begged Ethan. I prepared his mind for the big stage. That way, he doesn't get surprised after listening to me. After pleading with him not to get mad at me after the confession, I realized how stupid I sounded. That was one of the dumbest requests I ever made. I should know better than to trust the loyalty of a man who reeks of desperation. How can I demand such from an angry man? The way he expressed his anger, he might as well defeat a battalion of soldiers without a scratch on his skin. “Cross my heart, Susan. We both know I can never lie to you. You can trust me on this one. I promise to act accordingly. Just spill. You know I can never do anything to hurt you,” Ethan assured me with a soft tone. How he went from being a wild cat to a cool sheep baffles me. I knew his actions weren't genuine.
