After our performance at Mason Steele’s house, one of the servers asked me to follow her to meet a guest who had asked for me.
I was shocked to find a glamorous beauty waiting near the pool. She was standing under the lights, looking spectacular in a bright red dress and black heels. The woman had long wavy black hair and a very pretty, older woman face. Her lips were painted bright red and I hoped the words that would come out were not venomous.
When she saw me approaching, she smiled and took a sip of her drink.
“So, you are April Hartfield?” the woman asked. Her tone sounded a bit condescending which put me off immediately.
“Yes, I am.” I said, confidently staring at her.
“What do you know about, Mason Steele?” she asked.
“Honestly, not much. We were invited to perform here. It’s Jenny, our manager who handles everything.”
“You have been here three times, I believe.”
I nodded. “What does that have to do with anything?”
“Everything, my dear. You see, that handsome man is not for everybody. I let whores have him but that’s all. If anyone decides to date him, all I can say is it won’t be a very good experience.”
“Well, I’m not interested in dating him so don’t waste your time threatening me.”
“You may not be interested right now,” she said, before taking another sip of her drink. “I know mason. I know the signs he displays when he wants a woman. I’m not saying he wants you, all I’m saying is you should stay away.”
“Oh, I wish I could but don’t worry, all I need from here is the money he pays for our performances, nothing more. Besides, rumours say he’s dangerous.”
“They are not just rumours, little girl. Those are facts. He is a dangerous man, and I’m a dangerous woman. We are fit for each other. Try to come between us and you won’t like what will happen.”
“Who are you?”
The woman was acting so shady and ridiculous. She even looked older that Mason.
“You are all obsessed with g****e nowadays. If you get time, g****e Carolina Mendoza. You’ll know why you need to stay away. Now, go.”
Sighing, I turned away from the woman while I went back to my friends.
“Who was asking for you?”
“Some woman. Said her name was Carolina Mendoza.”
Maria and Olivia gasped at the same time.
“Oh my goodness,” Maria exclaimed. “What did you do?”
“Nothing. Why would you think that?”
“Carolina Mendoza is the drug queen of Miami. She has killed a lot of people and is one of the most wanted criminals in the world right now. If you got her attention, it can’t be good. What did she want?”
“To tell me not to get close to Mason Steele, something I don’t intend to do.”
“You have to live the city,” Maria said.
“Don’t be dramatic,” I said.
“I’m telling you, that woman is bad news.”
“Come on, let’s get more drinks. I don’t want to talk about this.”
Ten minutes later, we were dancing in the hall with drinks in our hands. It had started drizzling outside and the party had moved inside. It was a crazy party with people doing all sorts of things. Some were drinking, others taking drugs, making out, and many other things. It was wild, and crazy. I didn’t see Mason and other high profile guests anywhere. Not even Carolina. I wondered if they were together.
A few minutes later, I saw Mason, Carolina and three well-dressed older gentlemen coming down the stairs. Carolina’s hair bounced as she walked down elegantly. When they got to the foot of the stairs, she said something to him but he shook his head and started looking around. Our eyes met and I froze.
“April,” I turned to see Jed standing next to me.
“Can we dance?” he asked.
I didn’t want to dance with him since he ghosted me, but I couldn’t see any other option. Maria had found herself a new dance partner and left me alone.
“Sure, why not.”
Jed took my hand in his as a new song started. As we danced, my eyes found my way to where Mason and Carolina were dancing. I didn’t know why I was feeling bitter seeing them together. I couldn’t possibly be jealous, could I? I had no interest in the man. Mason looked so good, so handsome and sexy in that fitting suit. His muscular arms could not be compared to the skinny ones of Jed.
“I need another drink,” I said, and looked around for a waiter. There was none, but drinks were being served at the bar.
“I’ll get one for you,” Jed offered.
“Okay.”
No sooner had Jed left than I felt hands wrap around my waist before letting go almost immediately. I nearly screamed as I turned around. I froze when I saw who it was.
“Mr. Steele,” I said.
What the hell was happening? I could still feel the fire those hands had ignited on my body. I wanted them back so badly.
“Miss Hartfield,” Mason said. “May I have this dance?”
I looked around and saw Jed at the bar, waiting for my drinks. “Actually, I’m waiting for…”
“Jed? Come on, he’ll understand.”
“Okay,” I said, unsure.
The universe had it for me that day, because the song changed immediately to an extremely slow one. I smiled nervously as I stepped closer to Mason. I placed my shaky hand on his, hoping he would not notice how nervous I was becoming. When his hand settled on my back, I could feel my body on fire. My heartbeat was so loud and fast I could almost hear it. He pulled me so close that our chests were almost touching. I took a few deep breaths to calm my raging body down as we moved together to the tunes of the song.
A slower song came on and I could feel his hands moving lower to the small of my back. At that point, I was feeling weak in the knees but there was nothing I could do but continue. The women around me were staring at me like I was the luckiest girl in the world. Some had murderous looks on their faces as if I had stolen their beloved jewels.
I caught a glimpse of Carolina. She was dancing with Jed. When she saw me, she glared daggers and mouthed words that looked like, “I will kill you.”
Back then, I didn’t know just how much trouble I had landed into.
April.I couldn't shake the picture off my mind; the two of them standing close before kissing passionately in from of cameras. It was the ultimate betrayal, something I had not expected from Mason. I thought I'd come to know him, but clearly I had lied to myself. The rumors were right. Mason Steele was a heartless man. The pain was strong, stronger than everything I'd ever felt. It felt like someone had hit my heart with a baseball bat to shatter it into a million pieces. A few days ago, he'd promised me the world only to turn around and show Carolina of to the world. At first, I wanted to believe something was off, but Mason looked so much into that kiss. He'd kissed her so passionately. It appeared that they'd set a trap for me. Hannah had appeared with them. Had they planned her kidnapping too? Everything was confusing. The fact that Mason refused to pick up my calls made me even more suspicious."You need to get out of bed," my mother said. "You've been in bed for five days. Th
I stared at the faded poster of Luisa Cove as I belted out lyrics of the new song Maria had written. I hit a high note before suddenly stopping. I couldn't do it anymore. "I'm sorry guys, I said. I'm not feeling well at all. Could you please give me five minutes?" "It's alright,"Jenny, who had been watching me with a concerned look said. I had reunited with my former band for a new song they wanted to perform. I also wanted to spend time with them since they were my closest friends. Stepping away from my former band mates, I went to the wall. Leaning against it, I slid down to the floor and raised my knees before placing my head on them. I had been trying to reach Mason for hours but his cell was off. I even called his office and his personal assistant assured me he was fine. So why wasn't he reaching out to me? It bothered me so much. What if he was still with Carolina? What if she manipulated him into believing her side of the story?"Hey April, you must be feeling sad because M
Mason. After listening to everything April said, I felt very angry that I had been dinning with a snake all along. I called Kyle Barker, a private investigator to give me hidden information about Carolina Mendoza, which he did. What I saw in that document shocked me. All doubts were erased. I knew she was the one who kidnapped my sister. Now that I knew the true nature of the person who lived inside, seeing Carolina's huge mansion felt different. I had always admired the grandeur and luxury it consisted of, but now it disgusted me because I knew it was built on the blood of innocent people. Carolina was not the self made woman her reputation made her out to be, she was a robber who had risen by stepping on others. My heart raced in anticipation as I stepped out of the car and walked up the driveway. Taking a deep breath, I went to the door and rang it. It was like the housekeeper had been expecting me. She didn't look surprised. "Please come in, Mr. Steele." I followed her through
Mason’s POVA continuous beeping sound woke me up. Opening my eyes, I squinted at the brilliant white ceiling before closing them again. Whoever thought it was a good idea to use such a bright color for a hospital room must have been mad.I could tell I was in the hospital by the smell and beeping machine with a cord attached to my hand. After blinking several times to help my eyes get acquainted with the light, I opened them fully. I was alone, thankfully. I looked at the blue bed sheet covering my body and pushed part of it off.Memories of my last minutes of consciousness flooded my mind, reminding me of the problem at hand. Hannah was still missing. I pressed the sound button by the bed to get someone in the room. I needed to get out of there.Almost immediately, the door opened and Carolina walked in. I frowned. Was she the one taking care of me? I was definitely not happy to see her.“Finally,” she said, coming to the bed and kissing me on the forehead. “You’re awake. Was almost
April's POVImages, video footage and text swirled over the screen intermittently as a female reporter's voice spoke in the background. I backed off to the nearest chair, letting my body collapse on it. With wide eyes, I continued to stare at the screen, which had now switched to the station’s studio and listened to the news reader as he spoke about the shooting that had left Mason Steele in hospital fighting for his life.Despite knowing it was futile, I dialled his number and held the phone to my ear. No one answered just as I expected. I had been trying his number in vain for hours. Quickly getting up, I grabbed my purse from the table and walked out of the apartment.Chilly midnight air greeted me when I left the building and drove the car I'd parked outside. I drove like a mad woman, in the bid to reach my destination as fast as possible. My heart relaxed as the hospital came into view. After parking the car, I stalked to the building. A team of paparazzi hounded me but I refuse
Mason’s POV“You have to do everything possible to find her,” my aunt Eleanor said, clutching my hands over the table. Her grip was tight and her knuckles were extremely pale. I wondered what was wrong with her. She seemed so scared, even more scared than I was, and yet I was sure she didn't love Hannah that much. For the most part, they didn't get along very well.“I’m trying, aunt Eleanor. You know I will do everything possible to find her.”“You need to find her before anything happens.”“What are you scared of aunt Eleanor?” I asked. She quickly withdrew her hand and jumped in her seat. Her unexpected reaction was starting to make me feel suspicious. “What kind of question is that? Hannah is my dear niece. We might not get along all the time but I don't want to see her die.” “She will not die,” I said. “Please leave now. I have some work to do. I’ll call you in case of anything.”I felt more relieved after she left. Settling down, I started to do some paperwork. The cops had p
