LOGINAfter years of resistance, Marie decided it was time to be reckless.
The days melted into a strange routine. Marie had been living under Nicolas's roof for nearly two weeks now and she'd learned to read the rhythms of his life, the early morning coffee ritual, the hours he spent locked in his studio, the way he'd emerge with paint-stained fingers and a distant look in those piercing eyes.
But she'd also learned something else. She'd learned that resistance was futile, that playing it safe, being the good little houseguest, was getting her absolutely nowhere. She categorized every detail, the way his jaw tightened when she walked past, the way his eyes tracked her movements before he caught himself and looked away. It was a game of inches and she was winning.
She shifted her strategy with calculated precision. Her wardrobe transformed overnight. Her skirts dangerously high on her thighs, her tops hinted at her curves in ways that were impossible to ignore. She'd catch his eyes lingering on her sometimes, trailing up her body before he'd abruptly clear his throat, clench his jaw and snap his attention back to whatever he was pretending to do.
It was a tiny victory, but it fueled her fire.
That evening, she knew he'd be in the kitchen brewing his nightly tea. She'd memorized his routine, the precise hour, the exact spot he stood by the window while the water boiled. She'd watched him make it a dozen times, always from a careful distance, pretending she wasn't cataloging every detail of his movements.
But tonight was different.
Marie slipped into an oversized silk button-down shirt, leaving the top three buttons undone to reveal the soft curve of her collarbone and the hint of lace beneath, the kind of thing that looked innocent but felt like sin against her skin. It fell to mid-thigh, skimming the tops of her bare legs in a way that was deliberately provocative. Then she walked into the kitchen like she owned the place.
Nicolas stood at the counter, his back to her, but she saw the subtle tense of his shoulders, he'd heard her footsteps. He was wearing gray sweatpants and a faded black t-shirt, the kind of casual outfit that should have been unremarkable but somehow looked devastating on him. His dark hair was slightly disheveled.
"Hey," she said, keeping her voice light as she padded barefoot across the cool marble floor.
She leaned against the marble counter, letting the motion shift the silk against her thighs. Then, with deliberate slowness, she bent over to reach for a glass in the lower cabinet, arching her back just enough to ensure he had a perfect, unobstructed view.
He turned slightly, his eyes catching hers. It took him a full second to snap his eyes up to her face. “Hey. I was just making tea. Want some?"
"Sure."
She moved past him, deliberately close enough that her shoulder nearly brushed his chest. She reached for a glass in the lower cabinet, bending over slowly, feeling the silk shirt ride up her thighs as she stretched. She heard his breath catch. When she straightened up and turned, his gaze was fixed on her ass. It took him a full second to snap his eyes away.
"There's, uh..." He cleared his throat, his voice rougher than usual.
Marie decided to push the blade in a little deeper. She leaned against the counter near him, letting her voice drop to a softer, more sexier tone. "You know, it's weird living here. It's so quiet without my brother."
Nicolas turned fully, mimicking her posture by leaning against the counter. But he kept a careful distance. His eyes were warm, but a dangerous intensity swirled in the darkness of his pupils.
"It's a massive transition, Marie. I understand."
"Yeah," she murmured, taking a deliberate step closer. She tilted her head up, letting her gaze drop explicitly to his lips. "Sometimes I just really miss having someone close. Someone to talk to, you know?"
Nicolas swallowed hard. She watched his throat move, watched the way his fingers tightened around the edge of the counter.
"You can always talk to me, Marie. I'm here for you." His voice was incredibly low, almost a murmur.
She took the final step, closing the distance between them completely. The silk of her shirt brushed against his t-shirt and she could feel the erratic rhythm of his breathing, could smell the heat radiating off his skin, something woodsy and masculine and utterly intoxicating.
"I know," she whispered.
Reaching out, she let her fingers brush lightly against his bare forearm. His skin was scorching hot. A violent jolt of electricity snapped straight through her spine. His eyes widened instantly. His entire body went rigid. But he didn't pull away. He just stood there, completely frozen under her touch.
Marie leaned in, just an inch, her eyes locked on his mouth. "Nicolas…" she breathed.
His eyes, now stormy and dangerously dark, flickered from her lips back to her eyes. For a moment, she thought he might actually surrender, that the wall he'd built between them would finally crumble.
Before she could register it, he grabbed her wrist, pulling her tight against him and sharply pulled her hand away from his arm. The movement was rough, almost desperate, and she could feel the hard planes of his chest pressed against her.
"Marie, you have absolutely no idea what you're doing," he growled, his voice completely rough.
"Oh, I think I know exactly what I'm doing, Nicolas," she whispered back.
She pulled against his grip gently, testing his hold. His fingers tightened, not enough to hurt. He didn't release her. In fact, his thumb began to brush in strokes against her racing pulse point.
"This isn't a game, Marie," he rasped, his jaw clenching so hard she could see the cords in his neck strain. "You're a child. You're my best friend's little sister. You are living under my roof."
"I'm not a child," she countered, lifting her chin defiantly. "I'm twenty, Nicolas, and I'm not just Andrew's sister, am I? I'm a grown woman."
He let out a frustrated groan. "You need to stop. Before we do something we regret."
"Regret what?" she challenged, sliding her bare foot a tiny step closer. "Feeling something? Is that what you're so terrified of, Nicolas?"
His gaze violently swept down the entire length of her body, taking in the silk shirt and her bare legs, before snapping back to her face. The sheer hunger in his eyes was warring with pure agony.
"You don't understand the implications. You know nothing about me, Marie, absolutely nothing. There’re lines we shouldn’t cross," he muttered.
"Maybe I don't care about the lines," she whispered, her tone laced with a dangerous, sweet seduction.
She raised her free hand, pressing it firmly against his chest, caressing gently. The solid heat of him radiated through the thin fabric of his shirt.
"Hmm," he groaned.
"Marie…" he breathed, his voice ragged.
"Nicolas…" His name fell from her lips like a plea. "Tell me you don't feel it," she whispered. "Tell me to stop."
His chest rose and fell in rapid gasps. His gaze dropped to her, completely starved, as if she were the only source of air in the world. Then something inside him snapped.
Nicolas moved. He lifted her violently, his hands gripping her thighs as he pushed her backward against the counter. The marble was cold against her bare skin, but she barely noticed, not when his body was pressed against hers and his mouth was finally descending toward hers.
He grabbed her tighter, one hand tangling in her hair, the other splayed across her lower back and then he kissed her. It was nothing like she'd imagined. It was rougher, more desperate, raw and utterly consuming. His mouth claimed hers with a hunger that made her gasp against him.
His tongue swept against hers, tasting, claiming, and she melted into him with a moan that she couldn't have suppressed if she'd tried.
“This is everything.”
Before she could even process the enormity of what was happening, before she could catalog the taste of him, the feel of him, the way her entire body was trembling, a loud, insistent ring echoed through the quiet house.
The doorbell.
They both froze.
Nicolas's eyes, still burning with passion, pulled away from her. A flicker of pure frustration crossed his face. His grip on her tightened for a moment, almost painfully, before he slowly moved back, as if he had been burned. The sudden loss of his touch left Marie feeling instantly cold and entirely exposed.
Marie's heart, already pounding from the kiss, hammered with a new kind of fear. Who could it be?
"Stay here."
His voice was incredibly rough, barely controlled. He gave her a silent, severe warning look, don't do anything, before running a hand through his messy hair, trying desperately to calm down. The addictive taste of him still lingered on her tongue.
Marie nodded, unable to speak. She watched him walk away. His usual smooth movements were stiff and tense as he disappeared around the corner toward the front hall. She stood completely alone in the kitchen, her mind wandering like a confused thief.
What just happened?
Nicolas, her brother's best friend, the man who had always maintained careful, proper distance, had just kissed her and it was everything. It was raw and desperate and utterly forbidden. It was the kind of kiss that ruined a woman for all other men and made her understand why people wrote poetry and started wars.
Marie pressed her fingers to her swollen lips, her heart hammering so violently she could feel it in her throat, her heart racing with equal parts fear and exhilaration.
The doorbell rang again.
Whoever was at that door had no idea what he'd interrupted.
Marie watched him through the heavy glass of the window, her breath fogging the pane. Nicolas looked devastatingly handsome, radiating the kind of effortless charisma that had made him the most coveted bachelor in the city. He offered his arm to Sasha and she took it with a triumphant smile, pressing herself against his side like she'd already won some invisible competition. He opened the passenger door of his black Aston Martin and escorted Sasha inside. Suddenly, the house fell into a deafening, suffocating silence. Marie stood alone in the shadows, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs.He thought he could simply walk out that door, pretend she was just a naive girl, a child, and enjoy a romantic evening with his newest toy. He believed his stern warnings and dismissive tone had broken her. But he underestimated her. He didn't know how possessive she could be. How obsessive and how utterly consumed she was by the need to make him hers. She had been in love with L
Marie heard Lucas's voice drift from the front hall, smooth as aged whiskey and twice as dangerous. "Yes?"His tone had snapped back to that polished, public-facing civility, the measured cadence he reserved for gallery openings and magazine interviews. But she knew him well enough by now to detect the storm still churning beneath that flawless surface. The kiss they'd just shared hadn't evaporated simply because the doorbell rang. A bright and flirtatious woman's voice answered, "Nicolas, baby! There you are! I was starting to think you'd forgotten about me!"Marie's blood ran cold.Another one.Of course. After all, he was the infamous bad boy of the Miami art scene. Marie had known this for years. Everyone knew about Lucas Nicolas and his revolving door of women. She'd watched him cycle through women like he was collecting them, each one beautiful, disposable and utterly forgotten. But knowing something and feeling it were catastrophically different things. She crept silently to t

The morning air at Miami International Airport was thick with humidity and unshed tears. Marie stood on the curb, her arms wrapped tightly around her brother.“I’ll miss you a lot.”“I’ll miss you too. But don’t worry, I’ll drop by almost every week to surprise you and most importantly, be good for Nicolas and I mean actually good, Marie. Not your usual brand of chaos," Andrew murmured against her hair. She pulled back, mustering a watery smile. "When have I ever been anything but an angel?"He snorted. "That's exactly what I'm afraid of. Nicolas has no idea what he's signed up for. I trust him with my life, squirt. Don't make me regret it."The words echoed in her chest as she watched him walk through security, disappearing behind the glass doors. A strange cocktail of grief and anticipation swirled in her stomach. She was losing her brother to a project, but gaining access to the one man she'd been forbidden to want for six years. The ride to Nicolas's estate was a blur of Miami's
"Bend over."The words hung in the air like smoke, curling around Marie's consciousness with an intoxicating weight that made her knees buckle. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she stood before the massive desk, her skin still prickling from the feel of his gaze on her. She stood frozen, her chest rising and falling in shallow breaths as she processed what he'd just commanded. The afternoon Miami sun streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting golden rays across half-finished canvases and paint-splattered drop cloths, but her attention was fixed entirely on the man before her. The scent of turpentine and expensive cologne hung in the air of the studio, a heady mix that was pure Lucas Nicolas.Lucas stood beside his desk, his dark hair slightly disheveled, those piercing blue eyes locked onto her with an intensity that made her feel like prey caught in a predator's gaze. His neatly trimmed stubble framed a jaw that clenched with barely restrained tension. He towered ov
