Chapter 05

I swallowed the knot forming in my throat, choking me a little more with every second. This wasn't the moment to panic. I forced air into my lungs and reined in the tremor spreading through my body.

“It's impossible we've met before.” My gaze stayed on my feet, far from his curious stare. “This is the first time I've seen you, sir, but people tend to say I have one of those familiar faces.”

The creak of the chair startled me. I lifted my eyes quickly and watched him straighten his jacket and walk slowly toward me. My instinct to run surged through me, but I fought it down. I held his gaze and waited for him to say something.

“Where's your daughter?” He looked past me for a moment, then turned back to face me with a challenging stare.

“She… isn't here.” My voice faltered, panic threatening to take hold of me again. “She's with my mother.”

He studied my face like he was trying to read me, trying to figure out who I really was. His jaw tightened, his expression turning even darker.

“Why would I hire a woman who can't take care of her daughter?” He turned his back to me, his voice rough and tense, echoing through the enormous room. “If your daughter's with your mother, that means you couldn't handle taking care of her on your own.”

“That's not it…” I shook my head firmly, tears threatening to spill. “What I mean is, I had to leave her with someone so I could come to this interview. I need this job so I can give her a better life.”

“Do you think it's fair to abandon your daughter to take care of someone else's?”

His question sent a shock through my body. I should have planned for this part. I should have thought carefully about what I'd say to him. Gabriel didn't want to give me that job; he was sharp, too smart to just hire anyone, and when I looked into his eyes again, I was certain of it—but I would convince him to give me this chance.

“I know exactly what you must be thinking.” I straightened my spine, as tall as I could stand, lifted my chin, and looked at him with confidence, even as my knees shook uncontrollably. “My husband cheated on me and ran off with his mistress, leaving me in ruins. He took everything I had. If I don't get a job, I could lose my daughter forever. Staying home to take care of her isn't an option.”

My breath caught when he looked away. He walked toward me again, passed right by me like I was nothing, and sat back down in his chair.

I let the air out slowly. Not everything I'd said was a lie, but I had no idea whether Gabriel believed a word of it; his face gave nothing away.

He leaned back in the swivel chair, arms resting loosely around the seat, lips pressed tight, no trace of a smile. He didn't say anything for a long moment. Not only that, but he just watched me, like I was some object to be studied. I forced myself to hold his gaze for as long as it took.

The panic built inside me. I felt like I'd done everything wrong. Three long years waiting for this moment, only to lose it all over a poorly planned story.

“Be at the front of this building tomorrow, at six o'clock.” His voice cut through the tension inside me, making me hold my breath. “Not one minute later.”

“What do you mean?” My voice trembled; I understood perfectly well what his words meant, but I wanted to be certain. I needed to hear him say it again.

“That's your hire.” He stood and walked toward the door, not looking at me. “You're my daughter's nanny, and I sincerely hope you don't make me regret this decision.”

I watched the exact moment he left me alone in that room, right before the tears flooded my eyes and blurred my vision. I dropped to my knees on the cold marble floor. The sound of my bones cracking against it mixed with the sobs I forced myself to muffle. I'd done it, and for a moment it felt so terrifying that I doubted my ability to pull it off.

I knelt there and let my tears soak into the floor. This was the moment I'd waited years for. The moment I'd finally get back everything that had been stolen from me.

“Ms. Scarlat.” A light hand touched my shoulder. “Are you all right? You can't stay here.”

I got up quickly, looking at the receptionist who'd helped me minutes earlier. I wiped my tears before standing fully, smoothing my hands over my wrinkled skirt. Not only that, but I looked at the woman again as she held out a document to me.

“Mr. Gabriel asked me to give you this.” I squinted at the document. “It's your employment contract. It needs to be signed today.”

I wasn't concerned with the clauses written in that document, what rules I'd have to follow, or whether I'd owe a penalty f*e down the line. I grabbed the pen from her hands and, with my other hand trembling, held the paper steady. Not only that, but I flipped through the document, going straight to the last page without reading a single line, and signed it.

The startled look on the woman's face followed me as I handed back the signed document, and I walked away, edging out.

The reviewing, shifted look on the woman's face followed me as I handed the signed document back and walked out.

  • Seducing my daughter's dad   Chapter 84

POV ClariceI swallowed every one of Charlotte’s rejections and stayed head over heels in love with her, anyway. I watched her sleep, imagining all the happy days I could still have ahead with my daughter.Winning her over, earning the right to be her genuine mother, was all that mattered, nothing else.I’d forget the conflicts with Gabriel, the fact that Frank was working for him now, the reasons Ava wouldn’t support me, all of it, just to earn the right to be my daughter’s mother. While she slept, I made a promise at the foot of her bed that, from that moment on, my entire focus, all my energy, would belong to her alone.Even knowing that maybe Charlotte would never love me back the same way.A knock at the door broke through my thoughts, and when I turned to see who it was, my stomach turned, and I wanted to throw up right there.“Excuse me, ma’am.” She carried a stack of clothes as she pushed the door open and walked in. She always walked with her head held high, still acting like

  • Seducing my daughter's dad   Chapter 83

POV ClariceMy stomach sank, and I stood frozen far too long in the middle of the diner while people bumped into my shoulder, grumbling at me for standing there like a statue blocking the way.It had never once crossed my mind that Frank could be in love with me.That everything he’d done had been out of love, or that he’d kept digging deeper and deeper into my tragic story because, somehow, he wanted to protect me.I took a deep breath, knowing it was time to leave. My whole body burned like it had caught fire.Without a second thought, I walked out and got back into the car. I sat in the seat, watching the city blur past my eyes as the security guard asked where he should take me.“Back to the mansion, please.” I said When I caught him watching me through the mirror. There was no guarantee that man wouldn’t tell Gabriel everything he’d seen, but honestly, it wouldn’t have made a difference to me. This situation had already spiraled far beyond my control a long time ago.And I was ex

  • Seducing my daughter's dad   Chapter 82

POV FrankI braced my elbows on the worn, sticky table, turning my face away so I wouldn’t look at Skay. It would have been better if I had refused the invitation. I should have left at the first chance I got and let her finally face whatever fate had in store for her.“Why don’t you stop fighting with Ava for a minute and team up with her to help me solve my problems?”Did Scarlet genuinely believe my entire life revolved around her? I turned to look at her, fighting to keep my heart from climbing right up my throat.“Team up with that woman?” I gestured at nothing, like she were still sitting there, and let out a laugh. “I only put up with her because she’s your friend.”“Maybe you’re in love with her.” I crossed my arms, forcing my face to stay unreadable. “That’s why you can’t stand her...”“You didn’t call me here to listen to your nonsense.” I cut her off, watching her enjoy her own certainty. “What are you going to ask me this time, Skay? That I refuse to work for your husband?

  • Seducing my daughter's dad   Chapter 81

POV ClariceHow ironic. We sat there, facing each other in silence, not touching our food, just staring at nothing, avoiding each other’s eyes for what felt like endless minutes. Ava chewing on her own thoughts, me chewing on mine.Neither of us would give an inch; even so, I trusted she could still be my anchor, my saving grace. I still wanted my best friend to be my accomplice in this vast sea of lies I was drowning in.“I still don’t understand why you married Gabriel.” She’d understood perfectly well, of course; she was just stretching the rope, trying to make me change my mind. “Is it just to win over some three-year-old before revealing you’re her actual mother?”“Don’t use your sarcasm on me, not in a situation like this.” A scowl crossed Ava’s face, revealing the impatience she was trying to hide. “Gabriel needed to get married to claim his inheritance. I did this for Charlotte.”“You made the exact same mistake twice.” She mocked, a bitter smile crossing her lips. “You marrie

  • Seducing my daughter's dad   Chapter 80

POV ClariceI spotted the security guard at the main gate the second I walked out of the service area. How was I supposed to leave the mansion without that man seeing me? I couldn’t meet Ava with someone watching my every move.An hour earlier, I’d walked into my room, my legs shaking nonstop. It took me several minutes to calm down, get my thoughts in order, and finally decide to leave.Gabriel’s words kept hammering through my mind nonstop, and every single time I replayed them, my heart raced out of control.I needed to tell someone what was happening. Ava was sharp enough that she might help me find some way through this mess. I called her and asked her to meet me at the same spot where we’d first reconnected. Ava stayed busy with her executive job, but she never once complained whenever I called to see her.I wiped my sweaty hands on my skirt and walked toward the gate. The security guard’s eyes landed on me the next second. His expression stayed calm, his eyes alert. To him, I w

  • Seducing my daughter's dad   Chapter 79

POV ClariceDarkness was terrifying, and while I was lost inside it, that near-death scene surfaced the second I opened my eyes again. My blurred vision still let me catch a glimpse of Gabriel’s terrified expression. A fear I hadn’t seen on someone’s face in a long time, especially not fear of losing me.“Are you okay?” That was the first question he asked, his fingers so warm as they brushed against my face.I kept watching him. The desperation, the smile that broke across his face the second I opened my eyes, the relief at seeing me wake up again.“I’m fine.” I tried to sit up as my head spun. My health isn’t great right now.“I already called Baltazar.” He murmured, though he still looked worried. His words trailed off there, like he didn’t know how to continue. It was obvious Gabriel would question why I’d fainted right after he mentioned finding out everything about Charlotte’s actual parents. It was clear to me he had a million questions burning through his curiosity. But he did
